AlwaysAfix: You are an excellent bench tech. I admire your patience with people most of all. I get quite pissed when people ask questions that are answered if they would have watched and LISTENED to the video. Also, SO many problems could have been prevented if they had just taken proper care of their unit to begin with. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Good job! I would hire you in a heartbeat!
@Kirollos Edward Do you mean you cannot insert the disk into the PS3, or it doesn't recognise any disks? Make sure that heatsinks are free from dusk to prevent overheating.
`What is the model number for the new laser? I believe I have to replace mine's as well. I don't want to just open the console to just get the model number and wait for the lens to arrive. I want to get the lens and repair it quickly
9 years later...still a great video. I'm having trouble with a ps3 slim. Disk will read if you tilt machine 45 degrees then you can set to back down. If cleaning won't fix... laser replacement seems next step. Thank you
Hi I just wanted to tell you I followed your instructions and after about $22 for the new laser assembly on Ebay and 35 mins of work, it works perfectly. Excellent instructions! I really appreciate this video.
First off, I'd like to thank you, sir. I've looked at many video's for this issue and yours is one of the most detailed on RUclips. I got my laser in the mail yesterday, installed it and now my 5 year old PS runs like new. I'd also like to thank Andrew Luck for his comment and directing me to the correct part.
I tried cleaning the laser on mine since the disc stopped spinning entirely. I've replaced the disc laser and now it is working again, thanks to this video!
Omg You just made me day! I ordered a new laser and I put everything back together AND IT WORKED :D YOUR THE BEST MAN IM TELLING MY FRIEND TO SUBSCRIBE YOU Thanks :)
Thank you so much alwaysafix! it is because of you that i fixed my ps3 slim. my my ps3 wouldn't read blue rays but stranglyy, it reads regular dvds. i didn't replace the laser like you but what i did was clean the lasers with 99% rubbing alcohol. now my ps3 is back in action. thank you much for the.disassembly video. i couldn't have done it without it. may good karma be with you my friend.
I am so thankful for this tutorial! Thanks a bunch! First off, I am NOT a gamer. My PS3 died after only about 15 hours of blu-ray drive usage, 1 year and 4 days old. Best Buy would not cover the repair and did not extend the warranty. Bought a laser package on an auction website and with this tutorial, I am back in action. Thanks again for saving me a ton of money!!
Most times its not the laser its the rails try tightening them on the four screws before replacing the full deck always works on for me when I fix them
This video is very helpful. I first decided that my PS3 was out of warranty and maybe it would be time to upgrade to a PS4 in the event this didn't work. A super-small flat head worked okay to unscrew the 3 security screws. I took the PS3 apart per the video directions (just to make sure I could) and got the laser name off of the deck. KEM-450AAA. I reassembled the PS3 without issue, except I did forget to put the magnet 3:57 back on top in the drive. I noticed the magnet was laying to the side after I got the drive put back together. Just more practice when I took the drive back apart and put the magnet back on. I received an actual security screwdriver with the new laser I ordered. I just took my time and made sure to put all the screws in particular places so I did not lose or misplace any. I have quite a few PS3 games and blu-ray movies! Glad this worked, thanks for the vid-
Thanks for the tutorial. I bought my ps3 off a guy in facebook for $27 and knew I had to replace the laser. The laser was only $24 on Amazon which wasn't bad at all. Thank you so much for the tutorial, it was really easy!
well what if mine freezes every time i have a game inside of it after 15 mins of playing it whats that problem because i changed the disk drive and it wasn't that so i don't know what the problem is and now it doesn't want to accept any disks
THANK YOU! I thought my ps3 was dead and buried until I saw this video. Your simple and concise instructions made all the difference! I appreciate that you took the time to post this so guys like me can continue to spend way too much time playing video games.
My sons bluray laser just went yesterday and gta v is due in a few days so my son has been on at me to get this sorted. Thank you so much for an excellent tutorial, you deserve a medal :)
Ok about the last comment i already install the new lens drive and yeah still dont read disc then i did a file restore and the ps3 found a corrupted file and then it made a file restore when the ps3 restarted i put diablo 3 disc and started to play fine
This is the best instructional video I was able to find for this fix, and there are a whole lot of them out there. My ps3 was making that ejecting sound without actually ejecting the game, and was also occasionally giving me a disc read error. I first thoroughly cleaned the inside, but that didn't do the trick, so I ordered a new laser deck from Newegg and now everything works just perfectly. Thank you for this video! Saved me a good amount of money.
@Paolo Berrios It might be overheating. If the fan is loud and running at high speed continuously, then you might need to just clean out the air vents. Good luck!
Same problem. It sometimes takes like 20 minutes for me to get it to recognize the game disk I have inserted. Hopefully I can open my PS3 up and clean the laser disc reader, clean all the dust out with a vacuum, and hopefully it'll read much more smoothly.
Thanks a lot man. This video saved me from buying a new ps3 and made me succeed in creating a functional ps3 with two defect ones with different problems (one was just the drive not reading the disk, the other wasn't booting at all).
Fantastic instructions - used to successfully replace my laser and get my PS3 up and running again!!!!! Only note, I missed the screw under the warranty sticker the first time around - make sure to peel that sticker back and take that screw out as well (will void your warranty)
Dude you just saved me haha. PS3 stopped playing Blue-Rays, so I cleaned the laser but didnt help at all. So i ordered a new one and replaced it with your video as help. And it works perfectly again. Would have not been able to play any of my old disc-games otherwise. Huge thanks !
Yes, I agree, overheating is a big problem for these consoles. Every six months or so, you need to clean out the fan/heatsinks. Any modifications to help it run cooler can't be a bad thing.
If you are able to disassemble your PS3, you can remove the top cover of the blu-ray drive, as I have done in this video, so you can actually see what is going on with the disk inside. See which part is making the clicking sound and get back to me.
I have a new problem now, before i replace the laser i had the same problem as you, but now the disc spins a few seconds and then it quit. And it don't read the disc
This man is a great guy. Great video. Thorough instructions. I can see what he's doing. He even gives the part number KEM-450aaa. I'm going to have to give this a try. Thank you sir for providing an excellent tutorial.
In the video, I show you the magnetic centre mount that aligns the disk, maybe it is now out of position. If you are capable of dismantling your PS3 you can check it out.
Great vid. But I want to make sure I actually have to replace my laser before I try to do this. So my PS3 is recently brought second-hand, and at first everything was fine. But then after 40 hours or so play, I noticed the movie intro for my games started to stutter slightly with the drive making disc seeking sounds during each pause. The game itself plays normally at first but when the scene or the bgm changes, the game's loading icon comes up and the drive makes more disc seek sounds. This gets progressively worse with extended play time, with the load delay being upto 10+ seconds (It was originally near instant) until finally it becomes stuck completely with the drive still making seek noises. Turning the system off and letting it rest, I can turn it back on and play for a little while, but the problem comes back and eventually I hit another fatal loading stuck. I've opened the box before to see if it might be a dust problem, but the fans look surprisingly clean and in good working order. So what do you think? And is there anything I should try before trying to look for a replacement laser? I've heard some people say you can just clean the laser, but what do you use to even do that, as I assume the lens is pretty damn delicate...
not only is the quality terrible but I have no idea what you're saying to do instead of replacing the laser. all I heard was something along the lines of "put this on that". real descriptive and helpful
Great step-by-step instructions on how to dismantle your ps3 (although a little lacking in the reassembly steps - had to follow the dismantling backwards). My PS3 wasn't reading blu ray discs or games so I followed the instructions, cleaned the lens and it's working fine now.
The ejecting sound that you talk about could actually be the sound of a faulty laser. The laser clicks as it tries to focus. If the Play Station plays some blu-ray games you also have to consider the other games might have dirty or scratched disks.
Thank you, my PS3 is back in business. Your video is very well done and you have a great way of sharing information. Picked up my new KEM-450 from Amazon and in two days I was back playing.
Have you tried playing a disk while the machine is dismantled, to see what is going on with the disk? Is the disk spinning, like I have done in the video?
You're welcome. There is no need to lubricate and doing so could cause dust to stick and build up in the wrong places, therefore causing damage. As far as tape, you can use the white masking tape.
Great job, you are fantastic!!!! I have my PS3 since come out and stop reading the games and blue rays. I hope I have the courage to do it. Thanks 🙏🏻 so much!!!
Thanks for the great video. I have two quick questions if you have the time to answer them: #1: Do you know how reliable these replacements are? I've read up a lot on my issue, and most of the information is old, 2008-2009, about fats. I have a CECH 3001A (160GB slim). These threads tend to say that replacements didn't last for very long, but I know the drives were also different, and that the lasers were second hand or refurbished, as they weren't being made any more. Are these lasers you buy brand new? #2: Wondering if you agreed with my diagnosis of a dying laser: Symptoms: PS3 loads, boots, everything fine. Had problems with two games, MGS4 and Uncharted 1. MGS4 I got to the very end, and it froze on the final credits. Freezes at the exact same moment every time--read the rest of the game perfectly. However, I put a second copy of the game in, a friend's, and it played through. Uncharted is similar--freezes at the same point every time. I thought Uncharted might be HDD related, but it's just AFTER a save, not during. I thought maybe the discs were scratched, but they look almost perfect. I think maybe the laser isn't dead, but is dying and getting weaker, and is having trouble with very tiny imperfections. Guess I'm going to try cleaning the laser first, then resorting to replacing? Thanks again!
Yes, first step would be cleaning the laser first. If that fails, maybe you should find a repair shop that will replace the laser with a warranty. Good luck!
If your PS3 is overheating, you need to sort this out as soon as possible, as this can cause serious damage. If you are not comfortable taking it apart you need to take it in for a service. Most probably after the service everything will work normally. Good luck!
I bought one of these lasers about a month an a half ago, it took 19 days to start shipping. after it started shipping they said it would take a week. the day before it was supposed to arrive i received an email saying the item has gotten damaged in the mail. i received my money back and i ordered from a different seller, no trouble so far :)
Thanks Mate! my PS3 bluray is functional again. It wasn't hard to diagnose the problem in the end...2x 20 cent coins inserted into the bluray courtesy of some twin toddlers I know...thanks again.
Thanks man, you a life saver!!! I use your video to strip my PS3, but I just clean the laser with alcohol and now its works perfectly. O yeah just info for others if you have some trouble to find torx screwdriver, just use flat screwdriver with 2mm size.
Great video. I know this video is super old but I fixed my ps3 today. I wanted to play blu rays and it wouldn't recognize the disk at all. All better now
You should start by having your HDD checked, and if that's faulty, replace it. The HDD and the laser are two totally separate componenets, and do not come together.
Great video - thanks very much. I struggled at 5:59 removing laser cover until i noticed one side of the silver top is secured by very subtle black tape
alwaysafix 11 months later the fix is still working. PS3 works like new. I wanted to mention the ebay seller that I bought the part from but sadly ebay won't let me figure that out...
Console delivered to customer. I don't remember the exact model. If you are replacing your laser do not rely on the gb or the model nos, you must get the part nos from the laser.
My machine is a CECH 21xx and the part I ordered is model KEM 450AAA but upon inspection the one in my machine is 450BAA. Will this part work with my machine? I can't seem to find an answer online.
Huge thx for your vid... very straightforward and to the point, and help me with our PS3 wich almost couldnt read our disks anymore and we were choosed to play games from HDD, and PSN.. Cleaned the double linses, and that seems to do the job and sofare spare me to buy a new laser-deck. Took a look at your site, and kudos for taking your time and sharing these how-to vid..appreciated..
Had the read disc error (the one when it makes that eject sound but the disc doesnt come out) and the solution (in my case) was simple: reset factory settings by completely (not fast) formatting the hard drive. In my case it was a software error caused by a bad update. Hope you guys find this tip useful. It takes a long time to completely format the hard disc but it worked.
my ps3 had problems reading blu-ray DL discs (games like UC 3, KZ 3, resistance 3 and bioshock ultimate rapture edition), and I bought only the laser, without the mechanism which you just replaced; had to dissasemble more stuff, but this video helped me along the way, thanks :)
If you are comfortable taking it apart, you can try and load the disk with the cover off the blu-ray drive and you might see what's actually causing the problem. Good luck!
AlwaysAfix: You are an excellent bench tech. I admire your patience with people most of all. The ejecting sound that you talk about could actually be the sound of a faulty laser. The laser clicks as it tries to focus. If the Play Station plays some blu-ray games you also have to consider the other games might have dirty or scratched disks.

Have you tried playing a disk while the machine is dismantled, to see what is going on with the disk? Is the disk spinning, like I have done in the video?

Thanks for the great video. I have two quick questions if you have the time to answer them:

Yes, first step would be cleaning the laser first. If that fails, maybe you should find a repair shop that will replace the laser with a warranty. Good luck!
To be sure, you have to strip it and read the label, because they use different lasers on the same models.
When you say it works, is the disk spinning?
Yes you do. It's in the video, where you find the model nos.
Have you tried cleaning the laser? If you are comfortable doing that, try that and let me know how it goes.
If you are opening these consoles regularly, it will definitely be worth investing in those bits. Cheers.
Yes, that is a typical faulty laser symptom. Good luck with your repair!
Madzyadzy I would check with the seller first, but I do believe that it will fit. Good luck!

Is this the first time your console has ever been taken apart? Was it taken in for repairs?
Does it do this with all your games? Try a game in another PS3 to see if the games themselves might be the problem.
Fantastic! Thank you for posting this video. Great step by step directions... love the accent too! Fixed my PS3 without a hitch.
You need to open it and get the number off the actual laser. Good luck with your repair!
Does the disk spin up and try to read it and then stop, or it doesn't spin at all?
Thank you! Worked perfectly. Got the part on Amazon for $25.
Yes, as I never had the money to send it for repair, so I'm opening it up to see if there's a way I can fix it.
You should start by having your HDD checked, and if that's faulty, replace it. The HDD and the laser are two totally separate componenets, and do not come together.
Great video - thanks very much. I struggled at 5:59 removing laser cover until i noticed one side of the silver top is secured by very subtle black tape
Thanks for watching. Your comment could help others in the future.

11 months later the fix is still working. PS3 works like new. I wanted to mention the ebay seller that I bought the part from but sadly ebay won't let me figure that out...
Console delivered to customer. I don't remember the exact model. If you are replacing your laser do not rely on the gb or the model nos, you must get the part nos from the laser.
Did you buy the exact replacement laser, according to the model number?
My machine is a CECH 21xx and the part I ordered is model KEM 450AAA but upon inspection the one in my machine is 450BAA. Will this part work with my machine? I can't seem to find an answer online.
Good luck on the repair!
Happy days, much appreciated and thanks for watching!
Depends which screws you left out. Tell me the time on my video which refers to the screws which you left out, if you know where they came from.
Thank you for this post. I just replaced my lens deck and blue-ray games load up and play w/ no issues. At first I thought file structure was corrupt.
+tsmeteora Happy days and congratulations on your fix. Happy gaming!
Where did you buy the laser from? I reckon you should ask for a replacement laser.
Can you please tell me the exact time in the above video, showing when I remove the screws you are having a problem with.
my ps3 had problems reading blu-ray DL discs (games like UC 3, KZ 3, resistance 3 and bioshock ultimate rapture edition), and I bought only the laser, without the mechanism which you just replaced; had to dissasemble more stuff, but this video helped me along the way, thanks :)
Check the cable to the board underneath the power on/eject button.
Did you try cleaning the laser?
If you are comfortable taking it apart, you can try and load the disk with the cover off the blu-ray drive and you might see what's actually causing the problem. Good luck!
Did you have the problem of powering off, even before you took it apart?
Is your PS3 the exact same model as the one in the video?
