Thank you so much for watching! Let me know below if you are aiming for a more expressive style in your figure drawing? how do you work that in to a drawing? Appreciate you watching, so much! :) ❤
It’s Christmas Eve and I have COVID, the nurses gave me an iPad so I checked your videos. This is my favorite one. I appreciate you straightening out the top 5. Btw I like your speaking voice.
Hi David! Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear you have covid. That's awful I hope you recover very quickly and feel so much better. That's no fun to be feeling sick over the Christmas season. Thank you so much for watching this video, that means a lot - and thanks for the feedback! I'll try to use this format more often, it's good to know. Get better soon, feel strong and stay strong. ❤
Great as always! I'm going to focus on more expressive mark making to start, that's something that helped me a lot yesterday after watching your videos, definitely added a lot more energy! I can't work standing up due to disability but am also going to try switching to bigger paper soon and see if my arm issues will put up with it. I'm so guilty of trying to cram a bunch of drawings onto a single sketchbook page and I think that breaking that habit will help loosen things up
Working big definitely helps you to loosen up and to make more expressive drawings; it's not the only thing though, just something to try and if it doesn't work, then you've at least delved that much deeper into your practice and know what works in that one regard. I love to hear your feedback and your context - I want to make another video long with this one about how observation also helps with expression, and focusing on looking at your subject can be as powerful as mark making and scale of composition! Anyway, maybe material for another video ;) thanks for your comment here ❤
Thanks for the great video! I'm definitely not using the side of my materials for those gorgeous large tonal shapes you get and I'm not working large enough! Who is that adorable puppy?!
Hi Mike, thanks for the comment! Charcoal is such a great medium you can really push it much more than you think, to get different marks. Oh and that's Jessie my dog!! 😊❤ she's my awesome studio assistant! thanks for watching, really appreciate it.
Thanks for the great video. So nice to see you back. I love how you capture the features of the face with a few abstract marks. Also: I really appreciate just hearing your voice without musical background during the main part. The music is fun, but my ear appreciates the absence of the beat. Of course, people may experience this differently. 😉
Hi Stanislas, thank you so much for this feedback! Firstly, thanks for your comment about the music.... I always found the music distracting myself, but just didn't know if only a voice over would make the video a bit dull and dry (you know, RUclips videos need to be punchy, right! ? lol)... . I tried without music just the voice over this time, and so glad to hear you prefer it. Thanks also regarding the drawing.... i definitely make better drawings of a face if I can manage to keep it this simple; i think hitting the shadow shapes and stepping back seems to allow the face to "come through"! so, thanks again for watching, hope you have a good end of year / festive season 😊
I am quite busy these days, but took a few minutes to come back to your channel and happy i did. Very useful indeed. I am getting better with charcoal because of your videos and online courses. See you later.
That's awesome to hear Sylvain, thanks for checking in. I know it's a busy time of year!! Hope you have a joyful peaceful end to 2022! see you in the new year
Thank you for these tips. I draw with a regular old 2b pencil. Maybe I'll pick for myself a compressed charcoal. Also, I usually draw a curve to indicate the flow in the body and then thanks to your tips from older videos, let my ideas for gesture flow before making final corrections.
That's awesome, I love that approach, it's the heart of gesture to let your ideas for the gesture flow through your drawing, rather than imposing what you want the drawing to be. I would love to hear if you try charcoal and what you think of it - try drawing on newsprint paper if you can, it's a good choice for charcoal.
@@kronikevaporation6007 newsprint is considered a cheap quality paper, but it's used in life drawing a lot, and it works really well with charcoal especially if you are just experimenting with mediums and need to use a lot of paper.

So true how detailed facial features can kill an otherwise nice drawing, but can you show us how to draw the face

@@Drawing-Life I've never heard of newsprint paper being good for charcoal. I'll remember it for when I try charcoal. Thanks.
