I take this song as a very deep exploration of the fact that men are just as culpable as women for the fact of how we are viewed an treated, and when we give up the identity of trying to live to please men we face a lot of hardship as far as trying to find a 'reason' to even try to express femininity when it is interpreted as weakness and sometimes, even dangerous for our safety. I believe it is a call for men to move over and maybe step in our shoes for a minute.
Amanda, I think it's also a coming of age moment for the lady who is moving on from many encounters to looking for 'the one' and is searching / begging for true intimacy and mutual vulnerability. It's always good and helpful to see both sides.....
I mean when she begs out to "give me a reason" this song drips sex like no other song I know... and I can't put my fumble finger on why or how, it's the whole, the cry for "tenderness" "no matter if you cry" that guitar solo at 2:07 is total bliss. "Sow a little tenderness, no matter if you cry." If I could ever find a woman strong enough to realy espouse these sentiments, then I could find a woman worthy of my love. Only problem is, most women think they want a Man like this, but when the rubber hits the road, they want to fall back on the old stereotype of grunt aggressive cave man. No matter how progressive a woman wants to think she is she still falls back on the old brute strongman, which is a hard roll for me to play. I just want to "Show a little tenderness" that's where my strength lies, I just want you to feel like you're a Woman.
Nah, I don't think most women fall for the "old brute strongman". That's a stereotype that some guys use to avoid looking into themselves. Tenderness is good. Making a lady do all the emotional labour in the relationship, not so much. Gender roles are a joke anyways.
“From this time, unchained, we’re all looking at a different picture, through this new frame of mind, a thousand flowers could bloom, move over and give us some room. “ Came here for this. These lyrics come to my mind a lot, but I replace us with it sometimes. I think this song is about potential but for me it is also breaking through cognitive bias to make room for new ideas, new perspective I listen to this song for different reasons and at different times, but it’s definitely one of my top 20
Loved portishead so much already. Then, as im watching ahs, I hear this fucking gold play as Queenie and Madison are making their entrance. And I'm like, HELL FUCKING YES!!!!! It made me so happy. My hearts happy. I love you AHS. I love you portishead.
Lena Lena If you google lyrics, any part of the lyrics from any song, 9 times out of 10 it will find the song. Try that next time you're searching for the name of a song.
It's leaving space to mull over and bloom .. compassion... freedom from being typified .. deeper understanding ... Acceptance for being who you are instead of whom you should be . that is being pleaded by this lady .. if this is given to her by man then it will be mate forever relationship
the first time I heard this song in like 2010 and I was on the weird side of RUclips and I was watching this kid do their makeup and I later found that she transitioned and I now see how fitting the song is for her hope she's doing well I think about her every time I hear the song
A few years ago I watched a video with this sound that have various mostly b/w photos of famous women. It was very classy and fit the song perfectly. I can't seem to find it anywhere though, saddness. I love this song!
This is the beauty of Portishead. They don't print their lyrics in their albums and leave it up to the listener to decide what each song is about. For me, this song represents the injustice of prostitution, from a prostitutes point of view she is crying out for something more from life. Sexual organs should not be used as commodity or for profit to pimps. It also represents the awakening of the mind; the realisation of one's reality, the preservation of the soul and survival. What keeps prostitutes in the 'business' of sex? Its 99% not for the 'love' of it but because they lack of options and education to earn money other ways and also due to oppression. We are moving forwards to equality and away from explotation of human trafficking but it is a massive global issue that is not seriously looked at - It is a failure.
Kinda like hardcore and screamo is the same. Making inaudible loud sounds that definitely won't ruin your elder life voice. Leave it up to listener to maybe make out a word and message.
i found this song when i saw a pre op trans woman doing her makeup in like 2009 n this was the song she chose i forget her channel but i ran across her picture at some point and she seems so happy now
I've always loved this song...have to admit I geeked a little when I heard the beginning notes and knew what they were playing. They always have a great soundtrack!
I'm so tired of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just... Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just wanna be a woman From this time, unchained We're all looking at a different picture Through this new frame of mind A thousand flowers could bloom Move over and give us some room, yeah Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just want to be a woman So don't you stop being a man Just take a little look From our side when you can Sow a little tenderness No matter if you cry Give me a reason to love you Give me a reason to be a woman I just want to be a woman It's all I wanna be, is all a woman For this is the beginning Of forever and ever It's time to move over It's all I want to be I'm so tired of playing Playing with this bow and arrow Gonna give my heart away Leave it to the other girls to play For I've been a temptress too long Just... Give me a reason to love you
Hey there. I uh have been struggling with gender stuff for a while but especially at the moment and I just wanted to say hey and I wish I was something I’m not. If you ever need to talk you can come reply to this and I’ll be there
Bk in the day, I turned my coke dealer onto Portishead via this amazing song, then I turned him on with this song. Suffice to say, his mind was blown twice that night...simpler times!
My respectable taste in music brought me here.
My late love of respectful music brought me here

Us old white boys have been jamming to it too...
I love the rhythm of the song & the way it sounds.
Hope life been treating you right
I would die just to see Portishead live! That would be a dream come true!
Same
💖💖💖💖💖💖
But if you die, you won't see it because you'll be dead.
@@ZestyXtrawhat they mean is that, they want to see the concert so bad, and they would do anything just to see it lmao
I discovered Portishead when I was 18 (46 now) when I saw this movie. For years later, to see them perform in NY was glorious ❤

Yes, that's what I get from it. Idk wth everyone else is hearing. But I'm definitely open to other interpretations.

Like war, prostitution is part of humanity..the dark part ,that is.

I'm so tired of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long
Just...
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
From this time, unchained
We're all looking at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over and give us some room, yeah
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just want to be a woman
So don't you stop being a man
Just take a little look
From our side when you can
Sow a little tenderness
No matter if you cry
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just want to be a woman
It's all I wanna be, is all a woman
For this is the beginning
Of forever and ever
It's time to move over
It's all I want to be
I'm so tired of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long
Just...
Give me a reason to love you
Smooch Such a feeling.

ANATHEMA brought me here!
This sample is the same of "Hell is Around the Corner" (Tricky)
This is completely the contrary : Tricky has copied this song from portishead.
Personaly, I prefer the original!!
The sample is "Ike's Mood" by Isaac Hayes.
We can add Alessia Cara’s “Here” to the list!
This reminds me of effy
