Allot of the damage is caused by over drinking. I’m no health expert and I’m probably not right but couldn’t a person in adolescence drink moderately and have no damage done? And by the way once people turn 18 (where I leave that’s the legal age to drink) most teens just binge drink all the time when the brain doesn’t stop developing until 25.
To anyone who's reading this comment, no, alcohol causes damage to developing brains even when consumed in moderation. The damage might not be that severe, and your brain might be able to heal, but I would still highly advise not drinking underage, for more reasons than just the physical damage it causes.
Depends what you mean by moderately. Even if a young teenage were to drink like, say, one beer a day, it would cause the same damage that binge drinking on the weekend could cause. Even though, statistic wise, binge drinking is more dangerous. Alcohol, to put it simply, is a literal poison. That’s not to say I’m gonna judge people for drinking, but it’s the truth. Why does it burn when you drink it? Why does it cause you to vomit? Your body is attempting to dispel it as it knows it’s harmful. So no matter what age, really, it’s bound to cause damage. It just occurs more slowly the less you drink.
IQ is a meaningless figure which fluctuates greatly between administered tests, and in almost random ways. Another interesting detail is that someone with an IQ of 135 will have more in common with someone who has an IQ of 65 than they would with someone with an IQ of 100.

I have just been wondering something. You see I drink fairly regularly (once every third, or every other day), however, I consume one, maybe two standard drinks at maximum, and I'm done. I only become intoxicated around two or three times a years on special occasions. I'm pretty much a straight A student, and I'm a musician, I play 6 instruments, I'm THE best pianist at my high school, better than the teacher. So my schooling and fine motor skills are not effected. I drink because I actually like drinking different sorts of alcohol, it's just a little thing I like to do near the end of my day... Am I really doing much damage here?
Nah your fine don't worry so much. If your that worried just stop drinking. You damage your brain when you drink heavily. So if you were consuming more than 4 or 5 drinks regularly then there could be some damage I don't think it would even be severe enough to notice. And I think if you stopped your brain would heal it self. I think Drinking to the point of intoxication a couple times year wouldn't be bad for you.
Don't feel reassured with responses here. If you really want an expert opinion, ask the doctor - not here. I think you have an amazing gift for music, if you wanna keep doing it til your 50s at the same skill level- please stop drinking.

Any drinking to the point of intoxication. Intoxicating concentrations of alcohol, even after only a handful of exposures, have been shown to increase neural cell death in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and other limbic cortical regions.
Chris K It isn't that cut-and-dry. The brain doesn't finish developing until you're in your mid to late 20s. Up until you're around 25 to 27, it's true that there's higher amounts of neurogenesis (new neurons being born) than in the adult brain. However, just because brain cells are being born doesn't mean they're able to replace the ones that are being killed, or that they're even being incorporated into the nervous system at all. Many of the newly born neurons apoptose (die) before they reach maturity. Alcohol increases the rate of apoptosis in these cells, and it reduces the ability for the ones that don't die to be integrated into the nervous system. Also, there's new mounting evidence that alcohol exposure in adolescence can lead to permanent reductions in hippocampal neurogenesis in adulthood; the hippocampus is very imporant in memory and learning, so drinking too much could potentially make it more difficult for you to learn and remember!
