    Fantastic video! We have a small piece in Northern Calif. where we raise around 60 sheep and the same amount of chickens...we sell products from them at farmers markets...eggs and lamb, I also spin the wool, knit, weave and make soaps and such from wool, lanolin and tallow. It is a labor of love for sure, and never is it an easy job. Blessings on you for getting your child involved, it will give her such a great view on life that so many others will never know. Good on ya!

    Cool little farm go kart, looks pretty stout.. I'll definitely keep my flat bed nissan when I find some flat land. The goat milk bucket is ingenious! I really want to intern on a farm like this before I implement it on land of my own.

    You do need to feed them supplemental feed of some kind, in order to ensure healthy eggshells, correct protein (if they can't get enough), and to supply other necessary minerals. Now, you can grow your supplemental feed yourself, no need to worry about that. And I imagine if your chickens are truly free ranging, you may not even need it, but they have limited access in a tractor.

    If more of the corporately employed lived this way, society may not be as it is thus. Factory farming isn't going anywhere as long as their supply meets the demand. Nice acknowledgement. (Translation-"stinkin thinkin!) Kudos to this banker from me.

    yeah you are absolutely right, but i meant the concept of rising the animals, i know its impossible feed all people only with this system but it would be a great to have variety in our choices and not only industrial scale produce food.

    I didnt make this video, but i can help you out. That fence is called electric sheep or chicken fence. It is new and becoming really popular. It is cheap and very effective at keeping the animals IN. They electrify it to keep predators OUT.
    The breed of pig is most likely Duroc. They are red and heritage breed great at foraging

    This farm probably uses the mothers for milk in order to make cheese; so they use milk replacer with the babies. This is standard farm practice with diary cattle, goats, sheep, etc. in order for the farm to provide for the consumer as well as the next generation of animals.

    Anyone else think those animals are way too hungry? Even the chickens were swarming him.

  • @MelianAlcarime
    @MelianAlcarime 11 лет назад

    I don't see the need for triple costs. If you're growing your own supplemental feed, and raising your animals on pasture, the meat is practically free to produce. And yes, outdated farming techniques, and the current diet (at least for Americans) would lead to starvation. But between companion planting, succession planting, SFG, and changing our diets to rely more on grains, nuts, and vegetables, I'm sure we would do fine.

    How long does it take your chickens to get to frying size? (The ones we raised in Vietnam was 6-8 weeks) What was it you mixed with water for the hogs and how long do you keep them before sell or kill them? What do you do with the goats; eat them or sell them? Can they life off the land and get large enough for what you to do with them?

  • @christopherkrajnyk8507

    just curious what grain you feed your chickens and turkeys. a buddy of mine has chickens and swears that he just has to feed them egg layer (by prince) and corn/oats. also, was that whey from cows/goats you were adding to the pig feed? thanks:)

    People are NEVER going to not eat meat. Why don't you go protest the way animals are treated while being raised for food. Factory farms are who need to be shut down.The small family farms who actually care for their animals should be applauded. Hasn't anyone realized the futility in trying to make the world vegetarian?

  • @MelianAlcarime
    @MelianAlcarime 11 лет назад

    ...huh? You can feed a family of four with a sow and boar (slaughter the little ones once grown, you only need one or two of them for your family), two nubian goats for dairy (don't forget your billy!), a pair of breeding rabbits for quick meat, three to five hens, and a couple of meat birds if you like chicken. Incubate the eggs yourself to keep a steady supply. Obviously you'll need your garden, too, but even that is far smaller than many people are imagining, even if you grow your own grain.

    Someone please help me understand this, at 01:10, the girl is preparing grain feed for the chickens; however, they have them in a tractor with access to fresh grass and bugs - their natural diet. Is it necessary to feed grain to chickens in this setup - why/why not? Thanks for your insight.

    • @robthebeekeeper8997

      censoFL yes, necessary. While cows can get 100% of their nutrition from pasture chickens can only get 20-25%. They're omnivores and need more than just grass.
