Why Organic, Sustainable Farming Matters | Portrait of a Farmer

  • When it comes to your food, nature always has the last word.
    Most pro-organic documentaries make their point by taking stabs at the cruelty and other evils involved in the world of industrialized farming. In this short documentary portrait, Jesse Straight, owner of Whiffletree Farm, shows us a different approach. As he gestures to the beautiful landscapes that surround us he explains, "being a farmer is special because this is my office. You spend your day making animals happy...you get to do things that help the things around you thrive".
    The passion that Jesse exudes in this film will make you question every fast-food burger you've ever eaten, but for all the right reasons.

    • @dannyv84oz
      @dannyv84oz 8 лет назад +11

      +Karl S not at all, I was only replying to your comment about "killing and eating" as if somehow raising animals for food is evil, this farmer is clearly careful to raise his animals in a natural fashion and without stress, if he decides to shoot them and eat them at the end of it all that's fine all creatures die one way or another - the basic idea is that just because something is raised to be eaten it shouldn't be caged/mistreated during the duration of its life. Your comment seemed to point to the thread starter's comment about raising animals in a humane fashion.

    • @karls8586

      I undertand that, and ofcourse this type of farming i's better than factory farming.
      I just can't see how someone can say they love and care for an animal they ultimately are going to kill for the sake of money or their own pleasure. To me, that is actually evil.

      @dannyv84oz 8 лет назад +10

      Hi, you shouldn't feel bad for eating animals, it's a natural food chain. I agree with you, raising animals in a natural way free from chemicals is the way all farming should be done.

    • @patrickmueller3438
      @patrickmueller3438 7 лет назад +2

      AleFonlut but no way of killing can be humane :(

    • @coolioso808
      @coolioso808 Год назад

      @@patrickmueller3438 Humans literally cannot live without killing some living things. So, you want to choose what has to grow and die for human consumption because one form has eyes and the other has roots? Plants are living things just like animals. They have sophisticated, connected, and many researchers would say very 'aware' lives. Are we drawing the line because we don't believe plants feel pain when being killed but animals might?
      Look, I think humans should definitely be eating less meat and livestock farming should all be organic and regenerative, but fish, organically farmed animals, wild game and plants are all part of a food supply and circle of life for many animals, including humans.

    Hi Alexis
    Soil is made from the nearby mountain rocks that decompose to become sand silt and clay. The chemical composition of your soil will be different from other soils depending on what rocks it came from. Rocks can be granite, limestone, ultramafic meaning high in iron and magnesium etc. these create soils with different ratios of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, etc.. You have to do a chemical test to determine if your soil has the right ratios of the 13 necessary chemical elements for plants and people to be healthy, and has the right PH for the plants you grow.
    Do the test from a good soil test lab not a garden N, P, K test kit and adjust your soil chemistry for good plant health and you will achieve the goal you outline here.
