Now I know for the first time what "Peel Session"means. And I bought Steeleye Span's record for the first time in 1970. I was a high school boy in Japan that time.
I saw Steeleye in Oxford, summer of 1977. This lineup with the exception of Rick Kemp on bass and Nigel Pegrum on drums. What a treat to see them live! Unforgettable.
It's a lovely song but it's not Celtic, it's English. Steeleye Span have always performed a mixture of English and Celtic songs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacksmith_(song)
Martin Carthy was the master of this band, simply brilliant, his solo stuff too. Too much attention to Hutchings even when he was 'part' of Fairport, not so significant.
@@miyukishijisha8540 Very significant! Founder member of Fairport Convention. Founded Steeleye Span. Founded the various Albion Bands. Instrumental in the early 70's Morris Dance revival.
It's the harmonies that make this so good. Forget Planxty's manic version. This is so relaxed.
First heard the steeleyes on peels show, dug folk rock like this gem since, ❤
I first heard them in 1972 in Amsterdam music store and was blown away: fiddle, chorus, electricity!

This is even better than the album version...saw them at Oxford Town Hall about when this was recorded

Absolutely brilliant.
Tim Hart's rhythm guitar and Carthy's riffs ... what a magnificent mixture
Knight on mandolin?
@@evansmith3589 this is the original line-up of prior, hart, hutchings and gay & terry woods :)
Probably my favourite Steeleye Span song and one that I've covered.
Fantastic lovely song!
A striking version!
The pinnacle of Celtic folk rock. Probably my favourite all time

The most important folk rock bands in England at that time were all the brainchild of Ashley Hutchings.
