Cannonier was being battered around the cage, turned his back twice; stumbling in retreat and turning his back after the first big shots; stumbling in retreat against the cage after the second meeting; was caught in a muay thai clinch and kneed, was punched, then stumbled, turning his back for the second time and retreating for the third time; then failed a single strike attempt and was being pummelled by hooks as he began to keel forwards and attempting to retreat for the fourth time.
Rewatch the finish, he was not able to defend and was being stung and retreated 4 times, turning his back twice. He attempted 1 strike in return and it missed. He couldnt defend from being rocked all over the place and couldnt land anything back.
Was it stopped before he was knocked unconscious? Yes. Was it a terrible stoppage? I dont think so.
He had nothing for Imavov, he was just getting battered around the cage and all he could do was turn his back and retreat.

@@tarzanstrickland the point isn't that cannonier was perfect, it was that Herzog didn't give him or imavov an actual chance to fight, he just stepped in like an absolute worm even though there were MULTIPLE fights beforehand that night that others and even HE himself reffed where the fighter was wobbled an almost out on their feet.

But that all changed when the Early Stoppage Referee attacked. Only Mario Yamasaki have mastered the 8 corners of the octagon. Only he could give them a chance to be a Warrior. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

difference is Tony was throwing back against Justin, Tony wasnt turning his back multiple times and retreating the entire time. Tony was hardly stumbled at all, he just ate a lot of big shots.

Jared was rocked 3 times, turned his back twice, and retreated 4 times and only attempted 1 strike in return which missed.

Canonnier has literally been rocked like that in several fights and come back, Vettori, Whittaker, Brunson, all had big moments against him and he stayed in the fight until the end. Dude is semi-chinny but has great recovery.

Imavov got rocked by Phil Hawes and couldn’t finish PHIL HAWES of all people after having a similar moment versus him. His finishing instincts are not the best to say the least. We cannot say that he would’ve beaten Jared if that fight hadn’t been stopped. Such a damn shame.
It was a pretty bad stoppage considering the fact that Herzog didn't give Jared any instructions to intelligently defend himself or the fight would be stopped.

I recently rewatched the Chieck Kongo/Pat Barry fight. Kongo got knocked down 3 times within 2 minutes, and he was allowed to come back and win. Cannonier was on his feet the whole time, had time to recover and then the fight gets called? Terrible.
One thing I don’t understand is if a ref stops a fight due to technical submission, they can overturn it to a no contest if they decide it was the wrong choice, but they can’t do it for a technical knockout.

that doesnt affect how refs ref fights. If a ref sees a guy unable to avoid being rocked constantly, unable to land anything back, and is constantly in retreat whilst being tracked down and battered with no retaliation, turning their back, they are supposed to stop the fight.

It's a terrible stoppage but like you said Herzog is a good ref, so he should be cut some slack. If you make one big error every few years I think that is probably expected.

Honestly the thing that makes the Cannonier stoppage worse is that there are like 2 EXTREMELY latr stoppagas in the same card where I was like "what the f theyre just letting people get killed out here today." Im pretty sure what happened is production said something about fighter safety to the refs halfway thru the main card and it went how it went.

The stoppage was a bit early but to call it the worst stoppage you've ever seen is a bit strong. I was ok with it, end of the day Cannonier was turning his back and sprinting away from his opponent, its a clear sign that you don't want to be in there. He was barely fighting back, mostly covering and recovering which isn't really enough. He's 40, he doesn't need any more brain damage at his age just to appease some blood hungry fans. He will live to fight another day, everythings fine, it's not worth getting your knickers in a twist over.

Dominick Reyes still needs to retire. Did you see his injury listing after losing to Jiri? He sustained "nasal bone fractures, a right displaced orbital medial wall fracture, and a left displaced orbital zygomatic arch fracture" according to some articles. That's why his chin had been horrible lately
