All I'll say is there's a Mamoun's magnet on my fridge, and it's probably 2 decades old. I always enjoy your reviews, but most definitely excited for this one!
You really deserve more subscribers, I'd say you're a very good review channel. I had a great time enjoying my own food while also enjoying your content. I'll definitely be subscribing and checking out more of your content, have a good day!
I’d give that place a 2nd try for other more popular dishes you saw being ordered. And perhaps depending on the time of day, the falafel maybe prepared earlier (like for lunch, not dinner or supper), served hot/warm. You can then request the sauce to be put inside & not over sauced. Just a thought…I enjoy your honest reviews. Not a NewYorker but in SF Bay Area (Calif)…a foodie too!
@@uaeats The music seemed a little corny when I first found this channel but now it's part of the whole UA signature experience and I'd be really sad if you changed it.
Whenever I’m in the city I go to mamouns! I have been going since I was a kid. First off, who the f--- goes there for soup? You go for falafel and you go for shawarma. You get a shawarma in pita and you get a side order of falafel. If you are going to get a falafel sandwich, you don’t squash it flat (it looked like you sat on it) and you don’t eat falafel 30 minutes after you have gotten it from the place. You get the falafel and you eat it! 🤷♂️
I passed a guy with the tee shirt from that place while walking on 16th street on my way to a place you recommended- Xian famous food. Best lamb burger I’ve ever had. Cheers bro
The best Falafe I ever had was served in 1960 on the waterfront in Hifah on My on day off from working on the Kibbutz-it cost about $.50 cents with an orange soda. I would do a free three hour Eged bus from Kibbutz Sasa just to eat it at least once a month! I have never had a any Falafel that was close to neaross good! Sometimes it is just in the eye of the beholder-i was a 17 year old kid from San Francusco, spending a year on a kibbutz by myself- I have been looking for that street vendor flavor for over 60 years and have never found it again!
I have a friend that goes to the top 10 $$$ restaurants on that list when they visit NYC, but will never miss a chance to go to Mamoun's to get the Lamb Shawarma! Their hot sauce + lamb is really excellent which I really hope you would have tried!
In the late 70's I used to go to Mamoun's with friends after a late night out. Last time I went was several years ago. It was still cheap, fast, good-sized, and delicious, just like it was back in the day. Looks like they've gotten a bit less generous with the falafel in the sandwich. Oh well, the place still has sentimental value to me. On the plus side, I didn't remember them having lentil soup. Something to try someday. P.S. Hope you feel better soon.
Where to begin here... The initial AI selection was definitely all high end. I had the pleasure of dining at Per Se once, and Eric Ripert is one of my icons. Le Bernardin is the best seafood restaurant in NYC, dare I say the USA. Eleven Madison Park I'll never step foot in now that they are vegan, I wish I experienced it under Danny Meyer's command. And, you know I agree with you about Lugers. Second AI choices. Not bad. I haven't been to Mamoun's post covid (most places have most definitely changed). But, going back, I've been Downtown, and the one in New Haven. It was always excellent. Sorry it didn't live up to the hype. But, I can attest it was very good going back the last 2 decades. The Halal Truck by me in Flushing makes great falafel, so I never travel far for it. Out of curiosity, I actually did a ChatGPT search for best restaurants by me, and it was a decent result. As long as it doesn't turn into Skynet we're good. Sorry I'm chatty tonight... But thank you for another great review!
Yeah I think overall the suggestions weren't terrible, though they seem based mostly on volume of reviews than quality of reviews. Maybe ChatGPT will fine tune itself more as time goes on
Advice for Mamoun’s: Stick to the lamb shawarma and only get it if they’re shaving it fresh off the spit (which is sadly rarer and rarer there nowadays, they reheat proteins A LOT). However, if you get there when it’s fresh, their lamb is amazing.
It's literally one of the best hot sauces. I keep them in my fridge. It's what seperates them from most others. Tabasoc/Sirracha don't cut it for Schwarma. @@uaeats
The thing about Mamouns is that it used to only cost $2, was open all night, and is right next to NYU and a million bars. For college kid lunch or drunk food, it really didn't get any better If the quality has gone down as prices have gone up, that's a shame but not super surprising.

Squeezing lemon on an Arabic version of a lentil soup Is a must. Though I’m not a fan of falafel it should be tightly wrapped not so loose. Falafel should never have lettuce
You still gotta try Emily's (Cobble Hill) burger GO EARLY IN THE DAY, Yakiniku No Futago (Chelsea) GET THE TREASURE CHEAST STEAK, Lure Fishbar (SoHo) The Bash Burger, and if you can get a reservation off of Wuwu or Appointment Trader, go to 4 Charles Prime Rib, get the Burger as an appetizer (it's a super upgraded version of the Au Cheval), eat half, and then get down on their Prime Rib.
Having fresh and plentiful salad in a falafel sandwich isn't a negative. But I agree that they could have given more falafel balls in your order. If the sauce was tahini, I wouldn't mind it at all.
When I was going to the city in the late 70's we always stop at Mamoun's (GREENWICH VILLAGE). As with many places the QC has slipped with portions to what you had. They also have another place in New Brunswick NJ and like the Wendy's ad "Were's the Beef"? Shame to what it once was. OH, you missed a Great caffe next store...Caffe Reggo.

‘Stick with me’ is the best chocolate spot in NYC if you ever get a chance. A few years ago I saw online it was Oprah’s #1 chocolate spot according to her magazine. So many bonbon combinations made and decorated in house! There is one with black sesame, passion fruit and mango which is probably one of the most interesting and best chocolates I’ve had in my life.
Gypsy Grill in Jersey City makes some of the best falafel I've ever had. I've had Mamoun's now and then when I need a cheap quick meal over the past 10 years and it's always been mediocre. It's kind of like the Starbucks of falafel to me, consistently mid across several locations and often the only option in smaller towns, but if you have access to multiple options it rates below average. The sauce is always too much and the falafel is dry and pretty flavorless while the veg often tastes old and wilted. I think a lot of tourists or people who've never had falafel try it and think it's pretty great for $6, but there are SO many better places in NYC.
a pretty boring falafel sandwhich if I must say. just lettuce and tomato in there? I get falafel sandwiches in sheepshead bay area , theres so many more addons and for free you can get. like fried eggplant, hummus, various salads , and even spicy sauces!
Yes. it\s expiration date was about 20 years ago. It's popular based on everyone just saying, "you must try it,so good" It's okay after a night of drinking and/or if you are a new student to NYC and havent tried anything like it before. People think a long line means it must be good.
You're right about Mamoun's Falafel. At best it's mids but unfortunately it's probably the best I can do in my part of central New Jersey. I hit the one in New Brunswick from time to time. Haven't had a really good falafel since I moved out of Brooklyn 30 years ago.
