Since I have been diagnosed with ADHD a very useful piece of advice my doctor gave me was to stop apologizing for things I cannot control, and nowadays people think everything has to/can be controlled. I'm still trying to put that advice to good use, but it is hard.
It should be like this: You cannot complain about my dirty dishes unless you're here offering to help me clean them 🤣 people shouldn't think they are entitled to criticize something they do not have any helpful insight to offer you.
I function differently and my brain thinks I have to have everything in order, bought and sorted out before starting a task and that is why I have not started making RUclips videos yet despite the whole inspiration for making videos and posts being the desire to show the reality of a neurodivergent person dibbing my toes into art therapy and what a messy brain with a passion for arts and crafts can do to my world - out of control craft room, hoarding materials, jumping from craft to craft without even trying the first one, etc.. yes, I have issues, thank you very much 🤣
The burden of starting weights heavily when all you look at is "perfect", even when you know that is not the full reality.
That's why we relate to and stick around RUclipsrs who can show the perfect and the not-so-perfect, the simple but also the intricate things. That way we feel comfortable and challenged to do better at the same time. Still, the modern bug of fear of starting "simple" keeps hammering at our brains and we won't do that precious first step.
I was blessed to grow up living in my grandmother's house having a full house every day and being an only child at the same time. I think that sense of family and community is somewhat lost these days and we dig even more into isolation and not feeling worthy.
Great minds, artists, and content creators are hiding behind the wall of artificial perfection we see in social media today just because they are afraid of not being good enough and not achieving the high standards of the algorithm from day one. I feel we are losing great people to that fear.

Since having to retire due to disability and everyone telling me what I can't do. I got really depressed. Now I art journal and junk journal. It might not be "perfect " but as I continue to play with all the things, I improve. I have lived with ADHD all my life so I have done many different crafts/arts to cope. Be kind to yourself ❤

You just put into words what most of us feel and also live with, to some degree, but didn't know what to call it. I have never been diagnosed with ADHD but that sounds like it could explain why I have so many unfinished projects, so many unstarted projects and so many supplies that I have no more space to store my still growing collection. I am trying hard to live by something Lindsay taught us years ago..."Store it at the store. Go get it when you need it". Glad to know that you are part of this community!

I criticize my work when I'm done because I feel like I'm not making progress BUT, what I realized is that I'm actually angry at myself because I have not taken the time and effort to practice enough to have gotten better. So there is the other issue. I am lying to myself when I criticize my art based on the true practice and discipline I have given it. It's like saying I've been doing this for 2 years but I really only spent 1 day a week practicing this. So it was really 104 times out of 730. Muscle memory isn't gained much at 7 day intervals. I also get it that practice doesn't make perfect if you practice a technique wrong all the time. So Lindsay your so right, don't compare your work to another and be honest in your own pursuit of progress. There is no need for criticism only evaluating what you learned in the process and what joy it gave you.
What a beautiful, wholesome message. So important to embrace who we are and what we create. I made a decision to do art for myself. Not to sell, not to post, just make myself happy. I also organise my art supplies by colour for the same reason. This has been such an amazing confirmation. Thank you so much for sharing.
I took pictures of my cats and framed them. I noticed stains on the chair they were on so I put stickers on the frame over the stains 😂

You hit on so many thoughtful points. Recently I was looking at a picture of the mare and filly I had in the 70s and realized that in the background is the big, rusty, hand crank tractor that my friends and I used to play on as children. Our old burn barrel in the yard, my grandparents' house where I live now is also in the background, and the trees that are no longer standing for various reasons. It is such fun to see those little background things. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it. I hope you're having a great time in France, too. Can't wait to hear the podcast with Marty!

And the big pot of soup on the stove - I so loved going "up north" to see grandma. Thanks for the memories. I agree, we fall into that pit of self-perfectionism. I don't have a channel, but just posting some of my art goes un-posted probably for a lot of those reasons. You have reminded me of this when I have posted in some of your classes being negative about what I had created. We ALL need to hear this down deep into our souls. Amen sister Amen! In my opinion, the person who said you're trying to be a perfectionist is judging you too harshly. I would have never thought that about you. I wish people could remember to treat others as they would themselves want to be treated. Social media has made people forget that simple rule.
You are spot on Lindsay, when we are living in such a harsh world we should absolutely embrace things in our lives that spark joy.
Great topic. I am a grandmother who makes art that my adult grandchildren love to “buy”. My art is like my music I do it to bring joy into my life. I look for inspiration in nature and when I travel I take photos to paint from. I do have a few you tubers, like you Lindsay, that I watch and learn from. But I don’t compare myself. When I am in my weekly art group, I always quote the Bob Ross saying “it’s my world“. That’s not to say that I don’t sometimes paint some thing I’m not happy with, but like you pointed out if you put it to the side and don’t think about it and come back in a week or so with fresh eyes, you might see that it has somewhere else to go where it’s not as bad as I thought. So many good points you've made here. The social media pressure to be seen and noticed is soul-killing. Sometimes I think we all need to get out and touch grass more.

I love this. Social media has us convinced everyone has a perfect life and we think something is wrong with us. You are so right about old photos and how they show the reality of life. It is sometimes difficult when I look at my art in the “messy” stage and wonder why everyone else seems to be able to pull things together. I know it really isn’t that way but the illusion can be blinding. Thank you for this ❤

Lindsey, your videos have really helped me be less critical of my own art! I was a professional photographer who burned out pretty badly. That burnout ramped up my perfectionism 10 fold. But learning from your tutorials has inspired me to start watercolors again in a new sketchbook and not worry so much. Thanks for that!

I consider myself to be always a work in progress. I don't expect perfection from me, just effort. I don't care what other people think. They need to worry about themselves. I'm old enough that I have learned to take the pressure off and enjoy my life while I still have some of it left. You do that when you get old.😂

Seeing the process of an artist is so important! I must have subconsciously thought that a true artist’s creations were beautiful from the very start. It wasn’t until I saw an artist show her work from beginning to end that I saw how weird, terrible, and awkward a piece can look while it was being created. It opened art up to me. I wish I could remember who she was so I could thank her.

What a great video, so much wisdom. I have never been a great housekeeper - it's way down on the list of things I enjoy, but I had an unexpected visit this week from some dear people, and got to meet a delightful toddlerl We had fun, discussed the books each of us is reading, trips taken and planned, shared updates on extended family, and I'm just not going to beat myself up about the unswept floor, the piles of books and newspapers, gardening supplies, a bag of grass seed on the counter, etc., etc. I think we all had a very enjoyable visit. Instagram can be a curse.

Thank you for making this video. Such needed and important issues to be aware of. Negative self talk and comparing ourselves to others definitely exists in the art world and can discourage one quickly if they let it. I loved your tips to prevent this and keep an open mind and leave the judgment behind.

This is a great reminder and I love the story about your grandma. It reminded me of my childhood as it was very much like that. I was actually raised by my grandma and very much relate to an older fashion of doing things. Clutter was never a word or thing we concerned ourselves with. My grandma grow up in the depression. She saved everything when I was a child and reused it in some way, which taught me a lot about resourcefulness and working with what you have. So you can only imagine my clutter threshold...its quite high and add ADHD and a creative type and well its a messy to the world; but I see functionality and the ability to access the things I have and actually use them! I also look at it like a blessing for God. I'm a good steward with them, but if people come over they are different not stepping into a well kept, fancy guest house. Instead, it's a well loved, lived in, if you need it we got it space. I'm completely happy with my space and the thought of moving or trying to make it picture perfect gives me anxiety because where would I create if my house has to look perfect all the the time. It's clean though just the few dishes from time to time.
Sometimes, I forget just how much I am my grandma's daughter. Thanks for such an encouraging reminder!! I do post my paintings even when they're not "up to par" because I like them and enjoyed the process, but you are dead on when it comes to teaching others, selling my work, and starting a youtube channel about my art...I definitely don't feel good enough for that and/or feel like others are doing it better so why should I. Although, I am finding that a few specific style techniques I keep looking for on RUclips aren't there which is how I paint, so maybe I should...there I go should-ing myself...lol!! I feel like I work well under time pressure, but not well under the pressure to be perfect for others. That's when all my art becomes a flop. It is not on during the trips to the library, store, supper or when I am creating. We have no children. I have a large family and have friends. I refuse, for me, to give my time away. I make time for friends and family. I believe we grow through our art. It is a process. My art is mine. I choose what parts I want to share. You are an inspiration. Thank you.
Hullo Lindsay, I have had similar thoughts on creating art for years! I am one of the people that wants to get everything ready for creating a new project. I did learn to get started even when I was not finished with my current job. Getting paid is so important when you are creating art to pay bills! You can learn compartmentalization and ease up on ourselves even if it is just to complete a project to pay the bills this month. You can always create an artwork for just ourselves and enjoy the process. I am glad that you made and posted this video! I have seen a few of your posts from France and It looks like you are having a wonderful time! Be safe and take care over there!

Great discussion! I had an inspiring “non-buying” moment yesterday when an artist I follow uses Verditer Blue a lot. Instead of ordering immediately from Amazon, I looked up what it’s made of. I had all 3 ingredients, so I made it myself! I was so proud, as I learned a lot in the process. It is a nice blue-cobalt blue, cerulean blue and white designer gouache. Based on your beginning of the year resolution of using what we have! Thanks for bringing up great ideas!

This is exactly why I refuse to put any artwork on social media. I put enough pressure on myself just based on what I see online. I don't need the external pressure of knowing someone else is looking at my stuff, too. I don't know how you and others in this space do it! (Though I'm grateful that you do, or might never have given art a try.)
I have a love hate relationship with the internet. I set up my RUclips channel last year and my Instagram more recently and although I'm not expecting people to flock to my channels it is annoying seeing a short video get hundreds of views but none of those viewers thought to subscribe or watch any other videos! I'd love to not use the internet but as I'm disabled it's my only option really. I'm totally guilty of worrying about how me or my house looks cos I don't show either! Maybe one day I'll be brave enough? But why can't the art be enough? Why are we all so nosey? Ha!

I find it hard to create to sell. People say that I could sell things but it takes my joy out of creating to sell. I create on inspiration and spontaneous. Trying to create to make a living doesn't work that way.

judge myself harsher than I would somebody else. Because of that I don't really want to do some of the RUclips videos because my room doesn't look neat most of the time. I am working on myself to change that,but negativity and doubt sets in and you want to give it all up sometimes. It is real. I am trying really hard to grow my channel but it is not going as well as I thought it would, and this week has actually been extremely hard. This video is just in time. I appreciate you making this video,to tell us that we are not alone and we need to stop that 😂 I hope you are enjoying yourself in France. Have fun ❤

Sometimes, I think you're living in my brain! One thing about Instagram that I've noticed is that people watch the reels of who they follow and don't look at their feed. I watch the reels of my favorite account and hope they add a tag so I can click and view their post. I get so annoyed at all of the ads they have now that I have almost given up scrolling. It's sad that we can't escape being harranged by ads everywhere we go!
My son had/has extreme allergies, and as a wee little kid, he was a snotty mess. His eyes were boogery, and his nose was always running and he sneezed all the time. He loved wearing hooded sweatshirts with a zipper. I think he was always a bit cold. Every single sleeve of those hoodies was crusty with snot, and he always had a dark streak across one cheek, if not both. There are very few photos of him looking like that, because no matter how cute he was doing whatever he was doing, I'd have to wash his face and ditch that hoodie before I snapped the photo. I have omitted a huge part of his childhood by doing that. I totally get what you're saying.
While my mother only had 6 children, our house was always like your grandmother's house. As my nephew with Down's syndrome described it, "All da people. All da pfood." My sister Hazel, also with 6 kids, had a similar household. The photos we've taken both places are precious for that a random shot that includes a can (before flip tops!) Kaiser beer with it's two little triangular holes in the top. Or my nephew in his "fatigues" , sitting behind a can of Genessee, at Mom's kitchen table, age 2.
I think you're exactly right about crafters/makers and artists. We like to keep our work under wraps until we (WE) feel it's good enough to be seen. I can't tell you how many sketches and paintings that have never seen the light of day after I finished them. I don't think this one moment of reflection on how silly that is will cure me of that, but it's definitely food for thought.

My hobby are their to enrich my life and keep me from being bored. They are their to entertain and help me to express and see myself grow and discover things I never knew I would like. Such as sewing, embroidery and using fabric.
I don't like it when people say that I should sell or even share it with them.. I can't and will never be able to get to same joy that I am getting now from doing what I do now. It will take me a lot of effort, time and mental space, which I don't have.

Negative people tend to project their own insecurities and negative criticism onto others. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have never heard you dive into too much perfectionism or be overly negative.

RUclips is being really weird at the moment, quite often I’ve had to search my subscriptions to find channels I’m not being shown. Other RUclipsrs have said some of their videos are not being pushed out to subscribers too.

Omg... this is so true but why can't I get past/ over it.
I also judge myself too harshly and have been trying to be more kind to myself over the past year or so and its still a work in progress. I also started limiting my time on social media so that I could spend more time creating because I found myself spending more time on social media than creating and I also found myself comparing myself with others, as you mentioned, and felt why bother creating because I'm not that good and others make it look so easy and I always struggle. But I also know that I struggle because I'm not consistent so I need to spend more time creating and be more consistent and in time I know it will not be such a struggle and I'm sure as I get better I will like what I create more.
Thank you for sharing it meant a lot to me. I think social media has disstroyed art in so many ways. As you said, we are always comparing ourselves to what we see on Instagram. Myself, I rarely post any of my art unless I feel is something I really like. So many artists have given up social media because it has destroyed their mental health. Instead of creating art, they are so worried about the algorithm. As youu mentioned, It would be great if the artists would show the process and not just the fabulous end piece.
