I got caught one time on the Interstate in a storm where the rain was swirling around so bad that I had to stand up like I was on an Adventure bike, so that I could see over the windshield, until I could get to the next exit. You just never know sometimes! Not sure how much you ride, but I’ve put over 170k miles on this Wing, and this is the only time its been down. Which just goes to show, that it can happen to anyone!
Excellent composure & regroup of yourself. If it can’t be avoided, slow, steady & upright any wear near the white & dark shiny stuff in frigid temps. You were protected from a much higher source. 🙏🏻 Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, it’s easy to say after the event what you should or shouldn’t have done, but I’m glad you shared as we can all learn from others experiences. Stay out on the outside track as it will hopefully got any heat from sunshine and is always much cleaner and drier as it’s close to the apex of the roads gradient and usually the most area used by vehicles using the road. I find on narrow roads that we have a lot of here in ulster means the outside track is used by traffic from both directions, it just means you have to be careful in case you get some lazy driver thinks he’s driving a truck and encroaches on your lane too much. Be safe out there.
I watched your video and thought I'd make a comment that might help you, or others if they find themselves in that situation. I ride with a Polar Bear club and have been in your situation on a few occasions. I noticed you didn't let off the throttle when you hit that patch. That's the first thing I do. First I release the throttle. Then pull in the clutch. Then make sure I don't even think about hitting either brakes. Then don't try to turn in any direction. What your trying to do, is just roll over the ice patch. You don't want any type of power input being applied to your rear wheel. Keep a lookout for dark shady spots on the road. Be especially alert when going over and under bridges, when the air temp in close to freezing. Winter riding can be fun, as long as your warm and the roads aren't snowy or iced up. Have fun.,,
@ that right side looked slick to me but I couldn’t get over to the left side in time….and you can hear me make a grunt or something when I realize it. Should have just stayed right for sure! It would be a lot less embarrassing to keep the video to myself, but my hope is that it will help others be a little more careful.
After riding motorcycles for over 50 yrs and a gold wing for the last 20 yrs I could trust my mind to know there is a better way to the top of the mountain on a day like that. I hope you count your blessings. Please be safe.
@@blackwillow2884 I’m almost to 50 yrs of riding but have you beat with 24 years on this Wing…..and over 170k miles! And I could have taken the Jeep, but I enjoy either of the bikes a lot more! And my channel is called two bikes and a drone…so no Jeeps allowed 🤨 And the problem with this video is that I don’t show the rest of that 13 mile stretch of road. There were less than 10 spots like this and I just screwed up at this particular one. And happened to have the cameras going ! I definitely count my blessings though and will continue to be safe….and make better choices!! Thanks for commenting!
Glad you're okay and your sense of humor is amazing. I've been riding for a few decades now and I too have felt the unwanted embrace of asphalt during inclement weather when I had no business out there in the first place.😅 As a past and current GW owner AND owner of a Can Am RT there is something to be said for the latter during nasty weather, you still have to be careful but it is significantly more sure footed. Anywho glad you are okay and was able to regrouped. 😊

Most of that road was perfectly fine, but there were a half dozen spots in that 13 miles, like this one, where the wrong decision can lead to….the unwanted embrace! This is a remarkable human being. He didn't have to put this video up. He pointed out all his mistakes. Why? For all of us to learn from it. How many would swallow their pride along with hurt feelings and do this for us? I wish more would do the same.

Wife and I laid our 2002 Goldwing down just getting out of the snow line Exiting sequoia national park we were checking out a bear cub and I ran into a curb . Completely avoidable and just one of those things that will happen to all of us when we choose to ride No injuries and not a single scratch on anything but the crash guards all replaced after a hour ride home Still love our trusty steed she kept our limbs and skin safe 👍
@@RalfPfister my German isn’t great, but the weather wasn’t that bad, and the GoldWing protect you from the wind really well. I have great tires and I didn’t feel line it was unsafe…..until I decided to go across the lane instead of keeping to the right. That’s where I messed up!

I believe it stated in the manual "don't ride in snow or icy conditions, motorcycles only have two wheels and are not stable on ice" It is right next to where it tells you not to drink the anti freeze and not to sit on the seat backwards while riding the motorcycle. Glad you are OK, however it is pure luck and not anything you did to prevent this accident from happening.
Not sure what bike manuals you’ve been reading, but the GoldWing and GS manuals say to ride at every possible opportunity!! A paragraph should be added for not making last second changes when there are icy patches, but I have that down now!
Whew..good thing everything worked out..last time I laid my bike down..I had a few fractured ribs n clavicle..that was on a Road King.. Probably the extra size of the Goldwing provided some additional safety on impact..Thank God ur ok..👍😊

You were lucky not to damage. You are a braver man than me for being out in those conditions. I love to ride but wet roads are the least amount of traction i'm prepared to deal with. Glad you are ok and the bike too.
Wow, thanks for sharing. A mistake anyone could have made - just glad to see no injuries, no big damage and a traffic free road. The Wing has always been an incedible bike - proven again right here. You got that big boy up quick! I'd say time for a heating pad and a cold beer! Ride safe!
@@The333 That adrenaline definitely helped with picking it up…..but I guess good technique helped too 😄. It was a fairly slow….less than 30mph I think….crash, so that helped with no getting injured I’m sure. But you can probably tell that I’m constantly looking for traffic!!!
@@LNCastanon not something I would normally do either, especially on the GoldWing, but i wanted to get up to the top of the mountain to do some ham radio stuff before the weather gets really bad up there! Expected snow on the sides of the road, but not the ice. This was on the way down, but I really should have turned around on the way up. Won’t make that mistake again!!

@@SouthernBoyzRyde yeah, it wasn’t as bad as the video appears, since I couldn’t have been doing much over 25-30mph, and I only ended up a few steps from the bike. Crazy stuff though, and I’m just glad to be able to share it!!

@@twobikesandadrone Repair it ! There will be too many questions to answer ! I am 69, riding from age 17......52 years. As we have to import everything, bikes and anything related traditionally is expensive. ( US$1=TT$6.80) I had a Honda CB750K and a BMW R1150RT as my big bikes. Right now I ride an Indian made-and-market Yamaha FZ25.......enough to get around at this age. For a tiny island we have a huge car population and massive traffic situations, And Trinis DO NOT LIKE motorcycles. You would feel that for a Third World country one would see a flood of motorcycles. It ain't so ! Having a motorcycle is a part of my life. I once sat on a bike like yours at a Honda dealer in nearby Venezuela. It felt great ! Take care of yourself, and enjoy the ride. We’ve only lived here in New Mexico for five years and it is truly unlike any place we’ve ever lived, and we use to move every 3-4 years with the military. @@OldGuyonaBike glad you were okay too, and you’re right, they are a tough bike! My jacket barely has any scuff marks on it, which is amazing! I have a small pin hole in my jeans, and not a scratch on the helmet. Crazy! I wasn’t going very fast but I’m still surprised at that little damage. And I kinda like the saddlebag marks for some odd reason 😆 A sick sort of bragging right maybe 🤔
Glad to see you were safe and Bike had negligible damage. I had couple of minor mishaps while riding on my Honda Goldwing mainly Due to my own stupidity of turning sharp corner on icy road and stopping the bike while rear wheel was on a road bump (I am 5ft.6 inches and my both feet couldn't touch the ground at that angle). Otherwise, Honda Goldwing Touring Bike is a beauty to enjoy, but certainly not on the icy road.
@twobikesandadrone Sadly No. In my absence, My wife sold it as She regards Motorbike as a risky sports !! She gave me ultimatum that, either you have Goldwing or Me, so I "compromised". But I do miss it. Regards.

I praise your coolness and calmness under fire! Doubt I could pull that off so well. Couple years ago a fellow biker side-swiped me when we were both only going 30-40 mph. I ended up in a ditch with a broken leg. I very luckily ended up going down between two huge oak trees and stopped just a few feet short of a barbed wire fence. Biker friends got the bike off the top of me. No damage to my 2006 Triumph Rocket III Classic. Very lucky in an otherwise bad day.
@@studmuffin8859 I sure didn’t feel very cool and calm!! So glad that I had the camera recording, even though my helmet mic was off…especially if it helps someone out in the future. That’s saying something, when YOU feel lucky with JUST a broken leg! Glad you were able to stay out of those trees and barb wire!!! They say there are only two types of bikers: those who have crashed, and those who will. Guess we know which club we’re members of 😄

@@jeffkeni I went up to the top of the mountain to do some ham radio stuff called Summits on the Air. The road wasn’t bad except in a few spots so it didn’t seem unsafe at the time, or I would have turned around.
@@floydwilcox2640 I had gloves on. I took them off so I could untie my backpack (full of ham radio gear) to get it off the bike, so I could lift the bike back up. I didn’t put them back on right away because I just wanted to get the bike out of the middle of the road….so I stopped right at the end of the video and checked the bike, and myself, over a lot better and then put the gloves back on and continued. What’s really crazy, and totally unavoidable, is that after I got down to the next major road, a deer came across three lanes and within 5 feet of me. After all that, a deer almost took me out!! I still consider it a lucky day of riding, but was it really? 🤔🙄😀

Never road in ice and snow and never will. I usually pack up the bike when I see the first frost. It would simply have to be a matter of life and death that I would even attempt it.
@@tomsreviews238 I appreciate the comment! Wasn’t seeking it out that’s for sure, and had I stayed in that right line in the road I would have probably been fine. But I chose to try getting over to the left line, and caught the ice in the middle. Lesson learned!
Don't fix the road rash. That's what separates bikes that get ridden from garage queens or riders too afraid to challenge themselves. The really good riders usually have battle scars.
Amen to that!! No plans at all to fix that conversation starter!! And she does get ridden! Over 170k in the last 24 years. Averaged 20k a year for a few years though.
@@RedJetty-h1y thanks! Good technique makes lifting it much easier! I’ve had more practice at that with my Adventure bike, but it paid off here! I threw the gloves at one point, but I picked them up and put them on when I pulled the bike over at a safe spot just down the road.

Oh my! Glad you are fine and that's crazy that the only damage is the saddle bag. Come on now, is that really a caset player?😄 You made picking that beast up look easy, but I guess the adrhenalin had something to do with that. I sat on a newer model GW and it actually felt very balanced and I guess with it being so low, as compared to my bikes, it probably shouldn't be to ackward to pick up.
@@BigDaveTALKS Finally….someone I know….sort of anyway right?!! Yep! Cassette deck still works but I have it adapted so I can plug in my tablet for better music options, so it doesn’t get used much. Once I got that backpack (full of ham radio gear) out of the way it was pretty easy getting it back up. I’ve practiced that with the GS but not the GoldWing, but adrenaline helped too I’m sure!

I dont ride when its below 35 degrees unless Im on the dirt bike. Hitting ice on a road bike is sketchy at best. Congrats on the lack of serious damage and no injury!

Hey man, so glad you are okay. Where were you riding. I have no problem riding in the cold, but snow... no way. You have more balls than me. We all do things that seem stupid after the fact, It happens. Most important.... you can ride another day.
@@Yo-Ken that’s Sandia Crest Road….can’t remember the number…but it goes up to the top of the Sandia mountains just east of Albuquerque. Around 10k feet, and I knew it would be 20° colder up there than in town, and suspected there would be snow on the sides, but there were patches of ice….which I ignored on the way up, and paid the price for on the way down!! Totally my fault!!

@@twobikesandadrone If the deal is right I will let know. From all the reviews its seem more sporty. One thing I like is the BT Moto has a tune and new velocity stacks that give it 150 rear wheel hp. That's a plus for my riding style.
Also I do believe the Lord was sparing you, in that you had no injuries and no other traffic on the road at that time. Sometimes God uses accidents and difficulties to get our attention. Thks

I’m still not sure if I should feel lucky or jinxed after that day of riding! Sure makes for a fun video though!
@@allenmurray6393 very lucky! I had gloves on but took them off to move my heavy backpack off the bike so I could lift it up. I put them back on after I got down the road to a safe place to pull over.
@@robertchausse3050 very lucky! And you can probably tell that I was constantly looking in both directions. I cut it out, but one person did come up after I got the bike upright, and asked if I was okay, but they were the only one during the whole thing. Still lucky though that’s for sure!

This is a remarkable human being. He didn't have to put this video up. He pointed out all his mistakes. Why? For all of us to learn from it. How many would swallow their pride along with hurt feelings and do this for us? I wish more would do the same.

Wife and I laid our 2002 Goldwing down just getting out of the snow line
Exiting sequoia national park we were checking out a bear cub and I ran into a curb . Completely avoidable and just one of those things that will happen to all of us when we choose to ride
No injuries and not a single scratch on anything but the crash guards all replaced after a hour ride home
Still love our trusty steed she kept our limbs and skin safe 👍

@@RalfPfister my German isn’t great, but the weather wasn’t that bad, and the GoldWing protect you from the wind really well. I have great tires and I didn’t feel line it was unsafe…..until I decided to go across the lane instead of keeping to the right. That’s where I messed up!
The GL 1500 has great protection on it. I’ve dropped mine countless times, but usually in slow speed practice time glad it turned out well.😊

I believe it stated in the manual "don't ride in snow or icy conditions, motorcycles only have two wheels and are not stable on ice" It is right next to where it tells you not to drink the anti freeze and not to sit on the seat backwards while riding the motorcycle.
Glad you are OK, however it is pure luck and not anything you did to prevent this accident from happening.
Not sure what bike manuals you’ve been reading, but the GoldWing and GS manuals say to ride at every possible opportunity!! A paragraph should be added for not making last second changes when there are icy patches, but I have that down now!
Whew..good thing everything worked out..last time I laid my bike down..I had a few fractured ribs n clavicle..that was on a Road King.. Probably the extra size of the Goldwing provided some additional safety on impact..Thank God ur ok..👍😊

The deer that ran out in front of me a few miles down the road though, could have very well given me a few fractured ribs and clavicle as well!! What a day 🙄🫤
You were lucky not to damage. You are a braver man than me for being out in those conditions. I love to ride but wet roads are the least amount of traction i'm prepared to deal with. Glad you are ok and the bike too.
This video is only a fraction of that 13 mile road…..which was mostly clear. But I definitely found one of the bad spots!!

@@The333 That adrenaline definitely helped with picking it up…..but I guess good technique helped too 😄. It was a fairly slow….less than 30mph I think….crash, so that helped with no getting injured I’m sure. But you can probably tell that I’m constantly looking for traffic!!!

@@LNCastanon not something I would normally do either, especially on the GoldWing, but i wanted to get up to the top of the mountain to do some ham radio stuff before the weather gets really bad up there! Expected snow on the sides of the road, but not the ice. This was on the way down, but I really should have turned around on the way up. Won’t make that mistake again!!

@@SouthernBoyzRyde yeah, it wasn’t as bad as the video appears, since I couldn’t have been doing much over 25-30mph, and I only ended up a few steps from the bike. Crazy stuff though, and I’m just glad to be able to share it!!

I am 69, riding from age 17......52 years. As we have to import everything, bikes and anything related traditionally is expensive. ( US$1=TT$6.80)
I had a Honda CB750K and a BMW R1150RT as my big bikes. Right now I ride an Indian made-and-market Yamaha FZ25.......enough to get around at this age. For a tiny island we have a huge car population and massive traffic situations, And Trinis DO NOT LIKE motorcycles. You would feel that for a Third World country one would see a flood of motorcycles. It ain't so !
Having a motorcycle is a part of my life.
I once sat on a bike like yours at a Honda dealer in nearby Venezuela. It felt great !

I have a small pin hole in my jeans, and not a scratch on the helmet. Crazy! I wasn’t going very fast but I’m still surprised at that little damage. And I kinda like the saddlebag marks for some odd reason 😆 A sick sort of bragging right maybe 🤔

Glad to see you were safe and Bike had negligible damage. I had couple of minor mishaps while riding on my Honda Goldwing mainly Due to my own stupidity of turning sharp corner on icy road and stopping the bike while rear wheel was on a road bump (I am 5ft.6 inches and my both feet couldn't touch the ground at that angle). Otherwise, Honda Goldwing Touring Bike is a beauty to enjoy, but certainly not on the icy road.

I praise your coolness and calmness under fire! Doubt I could pull that off so well. Couple years ago a fellow biker side-swiped me when we were both only going 30-40 mph. I ended up in a ditch with a broken leg. I very luckily ended up going down between two huge oak trees and stopped just a few feet short of a barbed wire fence. Biker friends got the bike off the top of me. No damage to my 2006 Triumph Rocket III Classic. Very lucky in an otherwise bad day.

@@jeffkeni I went up to the top of the mountain to do some ham radio stuff called Summits on the Air. The road wasn’t bad except in a few spots so it didn’t seem unsafe at the time, or I would have turned around.

@@floydwilcox2640 I had gloves on. I took them off so I could untie my backpack (full of ham radio gear) to get it off the bike, so I could lift the bike back up. I didn’t put them back on right away because I just wanted to get the bike out of the middle of the road….so I stopped right at the end of the video and checked the bike, and myself, over a lot better and then put the gloves back on and continued.
What’s really crazy, and totally unavoidable, is that after I got down to the next major road, a deer came across three lanes and within 5 feet of me. After all that, a deer almost took me out!! I still consider it a lucky day of riding, but was it really? 🤔🙄😀

I commuted by motorcycle for years, and sometimes sub-zero temperatures were unavoidable. No way am I negotiating frozen water recreationally.
Trust me….I wasn’t seeking out the icy spots! Most of that 13 mile long road was fine!

@@tomsreviews238 I appreciate the comment! Wasn’t seeking it out that’s for sure, and had I stayed in that right line in the road I would have probably been fine. But I chose to try getting over to the left line, and caught the ice in the middle. Lesson learned!
Don't fix the road rash. That's what separates bikes that get ridden from garage queens or riders too afraid to challenge themselves. The really good riders usually have battle scars.
Amen to that!! No plans at all to fix that conversation starter!! And she does get ridden! Over 170k in the last 24 years. Averaged 20k a year for a few years though.

I threw the gloves at one point, but I picked them up and put them on when I pulled the bike over at a safe spot just down the road.

Oh my! Glad you are fine and that's crazy that the only damage is the saddle bag. Come on now, is that really a caset player?😄 You made picking that beast up look easy, but I guess the adrhenalin had something to do with that. I sat on a newer model GW and it actually felt very balanced and I guess with it being so low, as compared to my bikes, it probably shouldn't be to ackward to pick up.
@@BigDaveTALKS Finally….someone I know….sort of anyway right?!! Yep! Cassette deck still works but I have it adapted so I can plug in my tablet for better music options, so it doesn’t get used much.
Once I got that backpack (full of ham radio gear) out of the way it was pretty easy getting it back up. I’ve practiced that with the GS but not the GoldWing, but adrenaline helped too I’m sure!

I dont ride when its below 35 degrees unless Im on the dirt bike. Hitting ice on a road bike is sketchy at best. Congrats on the lack of serious damage and no injury!

@@Yo-Ken that’s Sandia Crest Road….can’t remember the number…but it goes up to the top of the Sandia mountains just east of Albuquerque. Around 10k feet, and I knew it would be 20° colder up there than in town, and suspected there would be snow on the sides, but there were patches of ice….which I ignored on the way up, and paid the price for on the way down!! Totally my fault!!

@@twobikesandadrone If the deal is right I will let know. From all the reviews its seem more sporty. One thing I like is the BT Moto has a tune and new velocity stacks that give it 150 rear wheel hp. That's a plus for my riding style.

@@allenmurray6393 very lucky! I had gloves on but took them off to move my heavy backpack off the bike so I could lift it up. I put them back on after I got down the road to a safe place to pull over.
