When I first came to CM, I found myself drinking to much, so I moved out of the city and into the suburbs, that got me out of the party bar scene and I ended up meeting and marrying a normal thai girl. We now live in HuaHin and have a son.
I lived in Thailand for 3 years & met Brett when I first arrived in Chiang Mai. I avoided the bar scene for the first 6 months, but it was like telling a kid, "Don't take any cookies from the cookie jar!" I too "fell in love" with a bar girl. After a couple years we wanted to move to her village in Issan to start a new life. Although I was making money online, my fiancé felt it wasn't enough, so she left me & went back to her bar. Depression & drinking then further crushed my Digital Nomad dream. If you think it could never happen to you, ask Brett his opinion, and he'll just roll his eyes.

@@walkerskii I understand but I still couldn’t do this, it’s like an invisible wall protecting me from falling in love with a prostitute… I know this business and it’s people for far too long, doesn’t matter if it’s in Thailand or anywhere else in the world, just know that women in this job are not housewives, their job is leaving marks on them and the easy money is just too attractive. For me visiting a prostitute is like a business agreement, go in, finish and leave. I have found your channel by accident and such an interesting topics you talk about. I would like to express my opinion as a Thai person who has seen a lot of foreigners being deceived by bar girls . I suggest that foreigners should adapt like Thai men do when going to bars-They'd go have fun, pay money then go home, no commitments, no monthly paid. To be honest , we Thais not quite understand why many Farang man get too emotional and let yourself into dramatic problem like that. And if you want to see real thai way of life, I recommend trying to stay in secondary cities such as Nan, Lampang, Tak, etc. These cities already have basic amenities. And in border towns you can even apply for volunteer work if you need some experiences. I've noticed that foreigners tend to gather only in big cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket. Those cities are hardly even cities for Thai people.- just my opinion.
i don't know if i was lucky or anything, but most girls i dated in bangkok were from super rich families, and they probably paid for more stuff than me in the end. Plus they seem afraid of the cliche of the gold digger and always wants to participate on dates to show they're not part of that
This is very true. I have done a lot of bars and girls over nearly 25 years. But I could never see myself 'taking care' of a woman for life. and settle there. Doing what? So I have my fun, and leave it at that.
I have heard experts say that if you are an American who has a gambling problem, don't retire to Las Vegas which has several casinos. Your bad habits will get more intense and you will financially ruin yourself. By the same token, don't go to a partying town with lots of bars in Thailand if you want to live a quiet, modest life without being distracted by alcohol and the temptation to have casual sex with randomly selected partners.
Spot on Brett. My first trip to Thailand in late 2019 I was there for work, but took some personal time off to site see and party a bit. Phuket I found myself blowing through a great deal of money in the club scene. It was great to get a lot of attention from beautiful people but costly. Buying drinks, shots, meals and more drains the wallet and fast. When I do relocate there to live it will NOT be in a beach party city.
@@brett_dev That's insane. I was only in Phuket for 5 days thank God. I spent more money in Phuket in 5 days than in Bangkok for 12 days, but I only did the night scene in Bangkok 1 night. But I can see spending too much in Bangkok as well if I got into the clubbing mode. People I met there and used to work with there all tell me live in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Udon Thani for a better life. I like nature so the Chiang Mai area is more tempting for me for a place to actually live.
I do know a guy (not me) who blew $220,000 in two years in the bars. Plus bars used to be ok for a cheapish night out, but not any more. Drink prices are throught the roof, bar fines crazy. On the plus side though having a Thai wife as I do means I can live really cheaply if I want to here. She knows all the deals and also we can live in her village which I love.
Bret, I watched 100s of your videos in the past, but didn't think to subscribe. So I just did. I'm thinking of retiring to Chiang Mai and I find you videos very helpful.
I agree with Brett once again. I live in Pattaya but I have been here 18 years. I don't smoke or drink and I don't go to the bars. I go to the beach in the early evening and spend zero money, I just bull shit with my friends. The temptations in Pattaya are many, even on my way home they try to get me in their bars. I have a friend that sold his house in California and he was going to retire here in Pattaya forever. He blew through 300,000 dollars in 2 years. He had it all and he lost it all and sadly had to go back and get a job. The only reason I can resist the temptations is I ran out of money, but luckily for me Social Security kicked in.
It comes down to street smarts when dealing with bar girls in a relationship, you must semi know what their industry is like aswell as the life style of it, also you must realise most Thai men dont pay a monthly fee for having a Thai girlfriend and many men who are foreigners believe its normal to pay them every month which is not, you can have a bar girl as a great girlfriend but you must know how it all works if a lady truly loves you and cares she wont ask for a single cent or drink from you, she will actually buy you food etc. Like a normal relationship, but for many first timers and 3rd timers in Thailand stay away from a relationship until you know their experiences on a physical and mental level because if you dont you will get eaten alive

Hey Brett... loved your video. Setting aside the party/girl scene in Thailand I think this advice is solid for anyone wanting to start an online business or any business for that matter. Very good advice all around. I personally have been looking at Hua Hin. For pretty much most of the reasons mentioned in this video. Plus the whole crazy party thing is not why I want to be in Thailand. But having that focused game plan for business is critical, no matter where you want to live, but even more so when you are living as an expat. Plus the camera set up was cool.

You so right on this and previous videos if you are going to work as a digital nomad, you need a clear structured project plan and stick to it. I am structured and usually will do up a whole project plan in a word document, and then I will do cost benefit analysis and also, pros and cons, and a risk assessment of what could go wrong.

Great informative video Brett. I am in the process of moving to Thailand and I have discussed some of these same topics with my family and friends. I am retired and will not be a digital nomad but my monthly retirement income will allow me to live very comfortablely over in eastern Thailand.
I like your garden. What you say is true I was a regular visitor to Thailand until the Pandemic, I hope to resume when TAT starts Tourism. Yes Temptations are there but you have to exercise a certain amount discipline.
Good stuff. I think in short, don't be a monger and have a plan for success! I think you are selling me on the idea Chiang Mai with the ease of access to airports. Cheers!
Your advice is all smart thinking. I guess I was naive with my time in Thailand. Pattaya was barely a blip on my radar. I just heard it was Bangkok's beach town. It's not until I started binging travel videos in lockdown that I got to know the place. Getting your business established is so important for success. Some people might manage it, but moving to Thailand is a huge culture shock - in a great way - and it was weeks before I was fully productive. I wanted to explore and eat and explore some more. Trying to learn your skill and build a business from scratch seems like it would take the really fun travel experience, and bog it down with a bunch of stress.
Depends on your online job. If your a beverage sales rep or a music guru then Pattaya or Bangkok are better options. If being a digital nomad covers the simple life. Then chang mai or nakon sakon are better. Im Issan from khon kaen but i like the beaches better than the mountains. Both are nice yet different. Have family in chonburi and its a 2nd home to me. I love pattaya but hate the clubs and the drunk foreigners.
I've been on holiday to Pattaya, Phuket and Hua Hin as a two week millionaire and had a blast. As retirement looms, could you tell me which are the nicer beach towns to settle in ? Perhaps with some nightlife for ' Once a month ' :-)
Been living here 9 months now as an expat in Pattaya. I can tell you the first thing you should do is figure out your budget and stick to it! After your rent and bills, see how much you can spend each day. I am at roughly 1100 baht per day, so that amount buys my meals, beers, pool and a part-time girlfriend who has a regular job at a store. I made it clear I am not rich and not going to support her. You also have to learn how to say the word NO.
He's right that you have to be very careful. You won't have a babysitter and long term is different than a blowout vacation. Heck, I ran up my blood pressure on too many benders just on vacation and my doctor said quit alcohol entirely, so I switched to MJ. I like Udon Thani, though summers there can be brutal. The boom-boom is definitely a budget buster if money's tight.
Bro this is exactly the kind of content that I need to see bro , I spent a lot of money in the bar scene in Phuket not prostitution just drinking and dating completely my fault , I didn’t have
What’s the easiest long term visa? Seems a lot of people who stay long term actually just use “ visa agencies” that bribe people for long term “volunteer” visas
My first few years in Thailand were full of temptation, now with that knowledge & those lessons behind me I’m a happier man now. I still constantly see Farang’s going down the wrong path! As they say, you can’t teach stupid! Great advice Brett. If you only save one, it was worth it Keep up the good work
Thanks for the video, Brett. Chiang Mai has been at the top of my list for digital nomad locations for a few years now. I don't foresee myself having any issues, as, like you, I'm an introvert. I also don't drink, and don't care about sex. I've been looking into The Astra building there. The gym looks solid, the rooftop garden looks very peaceful, and the pool would be nice once in a while. I probably wouldn't leave the building all that often, in fact. And as you mentioned, CM airport is able to get you to nearby locations. I'm curious if it would go to places like Hong Kong or Singapore - I'm a theme park fan - or if you'd need to transfer in BKK first.

Plus the whole crazy party thing is not why I want to be in Thailand. But having that focused game plan for business is critical, no matter where you want to live, but even more so when you are living as an expat. Plus the camera set up was cool.
Good advice!
All of it is sound and reasonable.
Not just for young folks. Old ones should do the same.
Yes!
Old ones have no need/reason to be conservative, if they missed their " pussy hunting" days in their youth. Death is on the doorsteps ... why not die being a "hunter" ?
@@red-hat-mike I don't pussy hunt, mate! Not my scene but have at it if you wish. Being conservative also means you live longer, stay out of the clinic and hospitals with various skank-related complications.
Going broke isn't a Thai woman thing it's a woman thing.
lived in Chiang Mai for 14 months great party city! have been living and too and from Thailand for 28yrs still love the bar seen :)
Loi krow road is a safe option theses days. I totally agree with your comments Brett. Cheers
The old saying is ' Loi Kroh Road is paved with good intentions ' lol
Pretty sound and generally sensible advice to be honest. Fair play.
This stuff is GOLD...! Thank you so much, big brother...!!!
Good stuff. Respect. On Point.
Much appreciated
Awesome Brett. "Temptations" 110% Very Smart Man.. Think Right.. 110% Plan ahead.. it doesn't matter how old you are or How Rich$$$ you are... Listen to Brett Dev... Mates only Look after themselves is Life......Treat everyone with RESPECT .. where every there are Born From That's The Real Deal. Cheers Great Video.......... Ps.... (Chiang Mai
City in Thailand
Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. )... check out the Jungle as my Longtime Partner /Wife said where she (Lives/Lived) Nakhon Sawan is a city in Thailand, the name literally means "Heavenly City...
Samuel Johnson (1775), "Hell is paved with good intentions." which has evolved into "The road TO hell is paved with good intentions.". Personally prefer the former. Darker and more absolute.
Thank you! I agree
Less words the better
You have no idea, how much money you just saved me bruv..cheers..great video
You so right on this and previous videos if you are going to work as a digital nomad, you need a clear structured project plan and stick to it. I am structured and usually will do up a whole project plan in a word document, and then I will do cost benefit analysis and also, pros and cons, and a risk assessment of what could go wrong.
me and my friend is saving up to start this life ur videos will be very helpfull maybe in the future we meet who knows world is small. so sick and tierd of being depressed in sweden.
We all said that won't happen to me ... I walked into Suzy wongs and broke all the rules lol 😅
😂
@@brett_dev just wanted to say what happened to me turned into the holiday girlfriend.... but wanted to say I remember on my 2019 trip to phuket... during breakfast I overheard one guy telling I guess his friend what he needs to do to get the quite obviously bar girl visa to back home the guy about 50 obese the girl I dunno 100 pounds wet... if you're in Thailand you would have seen this scenario play out way to much.... again I fell into naughty side of things twice tbh but I knew it was a superficial agreement .... anyway have a good day
Great informative video Brett.
Great advice Brett! Great point about how you can live in the country but you don't have to live right on the beach etc...
Good stuff. I think in short, don't be a monger and have a plan for success! I think you are selling me on the idea Chiang Mai with the ease of access to airports. Cheers!
It has a good balance. Small bar scene but fun and if you want more, hop on a plane it's only 1 hour to Bangkok.
@1:20 Thailand. "The road to Thailand is paved with good intentions."
Brett, that's the whole truth, that match perfectly!
100% on point. I would make just as much effort to avoid the foreigners as the bar scene. For sure limit your time in the tourist areas.
I've been on holiday to Pattaya, Phuket and Hua Hin as a two week millionaire and had a blast. As retirement looms, could you tell me which are the nicer beach towns to settle in ? Perhaps with some nightlife for ' Once a month ' :-)
Good video ! Life is what you make it here !
Great advice for guys wanting to go there, but also for life in general.
The boom-boom is definitely a budget buster if money's tight.
stay FOCUS for Guru Brett video in this overwhelming youtubers
Bro this is exactly the kind of content that I need to see bro , I spent a lot of money in the bar scene in Phuket not prostitution just drinking and dating completely my fault , I didn’t have
The Road to Perdition is paved with Broken Dreams...
If You Find Yourself On the Hershey Highway, You're Probably With a Ladyboy...
Number one thing to avoid in Thailand is drugs!!
And Number 2 is underage girls
Awesome advice, thank you
Discipline equals freedom
Your videos are very helpful! Thank you!
Good vid! Solid points
Appreciate it!
My man Brett telling it as it is!
Thanks for the info 👍😀
Great video…thank you
Thank you.
Number 1 thing to avoid that many expats make is falling in love with a bar girl.
What’s the easiest long term visa? Seems a lot of people who stay long term actually just use “ visa agencies” that bribe people for long term “volunteer” visas
You’ve been so helpful to me.
This one is a significant hit. Great new setup with the Osmo Pocket!
Great vid great advice
Love it! Good stuff!
Brett what's the best advice on staying long term from the US in Thailand? Year long Visa and renew? Please any help is appreciated
I don't drink or party, wish I could visit there .thnx for tips
Well presented and good advice!
My main reason for moving is the women. Once a month for bar game seems good but main goal is to meet a genuine thai girl and setlle down
Stayed in Chaing Mia many years ago it was so beautiful good memories
My first few years in Thailand were full of temptation, now with that knowledge & those lessons behind me I’m a happier man now.
I still constantly see Farang’s going down the wrong path!
As they say, you can’t teach stupid!
Great advice Brett. If you only save one, it was worth it
Keep up the good work
True, I think a lot of people have to learn the hard way with this one 😄
Great tips, thanks
You can fly to lots of locations direct from Chiang Mai.
Wonderful advice!
Basically, you need to choose your friends carefully. They aren't always supportive of your plans.
Brilliant and useful video 😁☀
