    I pretty much just started researching Cyberpunk, but haven't played it yet. I vaguely knew it was a thing, but didn't look too deeply into it until 2077 consumed my life. I later found out that the video game is actually based on and connected to the TTRPG. I absolutely love D&D, so the thought of combining Cyberpunk and D&D definitely got my attention. It's crazy that I just now did a search to learn how to play, and this was one of the first videos that popped up, despite it being uploaded 4 hours ago.

      I played 2020 back in the 90s. It's definitely grittier than D&D, TPK should be more common. If your characters do something stupid, they will die. That said, having run through Red rules, they balanced it much better and cut the danger down a little bit.

      Because just recording actors voices is way cheaper than scripting entire interactive cut scenes with a combination of custom and dynamic animations and turning on and off other random encounters along the travel path of the story section.

    The fixation on realism in combat by some players and GMs may be linked to the CP2020 FNFF rules being developed based on actual Police and FBI data on firefights. It was intended to be the most realistic and deadly RPG combat possible.

    I read through the entire book before starting my first session, and this is a great starting video! I might start having new players watch this and save it for my own refreshers if I ever need it. First time DMing for CP:RED and I think my session went really well. Had them start at a concert where most of the party was hired by the Rockerboy's manager. Unluckily for the Rockerboy, his lifepath had an exec enemy and some boostergangers were hired to "deal with him" during a concert. Thought it went really well. Planning on expanding the story to the players going to find out why the boostergangers raided the venue after a nice dinner with the manager for a job well done and to give info on the location of the gangers hideout. Hoping to make a big conspiracy around multiple rockerboys of varying popularity where exec is trying to bring many of them down. Really excited to let my players dive into this universe.

      @@w1ntrmute It's a really simple start but when I ran it, it allowed a lot of my players to get used the system. They were having quite a bit of fun with it. One rolled a double crit on a dance roll to try to dodge a autofire so I gave it to him. Rewarded that with some nice rep as I still had civilians in the room. You definitely have to pull out good moments with a start like that I feel, especially because it goes into combat, but it helped immensely on being a good first session.

    Made a character. My D&D group was talking about playing this next. I decided to check out the rules, realized it was basically the same as D&D in the broad stroke mechanics except d10 based instead of d20.
    I then got to character creation, read what makes a good Cyberpunk character, had already played a chunk of 2077, and decided ‘well, if they recommend go big or go home, then wake up samurai, we got a city to burn.’ I then accidentally made Johnny Silverhand. There are differences, but my character is a Solo turned Rockerboy seeking to bring down the current situation. With fire.
    Aesthetically, it is hard to mix up my character with Johnny because I made a short female character who dresses like a hippy. Not the super peaceful type of hippie, but the angry protesting type. This is a complete disowning of her former Corpo Assassin life.
    As the first person to make a character and the one who had a goal, the next two built upon that. The next one accidentally built Neo from the Matrix. At this point, we had two accidental Keanu Reeves characters and the party agreed to lean into the accidental theme and create an entire Keanu Reeves expy party.

    • @demonicbunny3po
      @demonicbunny3po Год назад +3

      @@JonJonTheWise I fully expect my character to die. The plan is a 3 act structure. Act 1: Get our feet under us since at the beginning because I bought a bunch of cyberware (thematically tied to being a former corpo assassin who had a lot more removed than I’m starting with) I have a Heavy pistol with 10 bullets and a knife as far as an arsenal goes.
      Act 2: Build a cult. Out of game I’m calling it a cult. In game, I’ll probably call it something else, but it is a cult built upon the ideal of making a kinder, happier future.
      Act 3: The Final mission. Turn the cult into an army (I plan to be Rockerboy 10 here for max effect) and set them on tearing down the current institutes. If I can get a hold of a nuke, you know I’ll be using one to blow up something, but the general idea is to be basically Johnny 2.0: Bigger and Better.
      Best result: My character lives and in the epilogue is leading an army on a crusade.
      Expected result: My character bites it, the movement is subsumed by a corpo entity, and by 2077 Everything my character did is forgotten and we are at canon game situation. My character gets a drink named after them at the Afterlife.
      Bad result: My character bites it before Act 3 or early enough in Act 3 that the plan unravels.
      No matter what, this is going to be about the journey, not the destination. And so long as it is a fun ride, I’ll be happy.

    • @JonJonTheWise
      @JonJonTheWise  Год назад +2

      Yes it’s very doable. You just have to make sure you do a good job explaining where everyone is standing during their turn. There is a major disconnect with the theater in your mind and the one in the player’s. Keep it as simple as you can to avoid confusion. Otherwise, visual cues are a tool as well. You don’t need a full battlemap to put some minis down.

    Great walkthrough, have a subscribe. I'm considering which system to run since I'm burned out on D&D 5e and really don't want to support WoC anymore. On my short list, I've got Shadowrun 6e (seems crazy fun, but also seems like it requires a MBA), The Sprawl (love how it paces with William Gibson's world, but not crazy about the mission clock mechanic... also seems a little slender on the rules), Delta Green (not really cyberpunk but I like the terror aspect) and Cyberpunk Red.
    How easy/difficult would you say Cyberpunk Red is to get running, against some of these other systems? I've got the Core Rulebook on the way; are there any other resources that you would suggest as need-to-have?

    • @JonJonTheWise

      Cyberpunk Red is very easy to get into. It’s designed to be streamlined for brand new players and gms
      All you need is the Core rulebook and maybe black chrome. The new cyberpunk red edgerunners kit is the best thing to buy. It’s about to come out. I made a video about it recently.

    I have a question on movement and range. When your playing on a grid and let’s say the range is 0-6 m/y do you double that range on a grid? Or is one square equal to a yard? This goes back to movement being MOVE or MOVE x2. A little clarity would help, thanks.

      Each point in MOVE is 1 square. 1 square is 2 m/y

    d4, d8, d12, d20, d100 are all divisable by 4.
    d6, and d10 are divisable by 2 like all of them. However, they are not divisable by 4 evenly.

    Cyberpunk diverged way before 1990. America never dropped Nukes on Japan for example, leading to Arasaka basically completely taking over the Japanese nation on a corporate level and then using that as a backbone to become a world power.

      There should be a link in the description for our discord. You can play online virtually or in person. If you’re playing online, our discord is a good place to start. We have “affiliate server” friends that run games publicly. If you want to play in person, you should connect with your local gaming shop to see if there are any games being run that you can join.
      Finding a game can be difficult though. But if you join our discord, I’m sure some folks will point you in the right direction

    Wait, wait, I need clarification. You say Stat, Skill and Role are judged from 1 to 10. Yet the corebook says you can have a starting max of 8 in Stats, 6 in Skill, 4 in Role. This is important though.
    I only have the jumpstart, but I am looking through a free online version of the core book. Thing is, even the core is contradicting itself. On page 110 it says that Grafted Muscle and Bone Lace can't increase Body beyond 10, yet on the 364 page(s) it says it can't raise it above 11. If it increases Body by 2, then does it mean that a natural Major Hero character with 8 in all stats is peak human condition?
    This does bother me, because in that case a "natural" Major Hero is a King of all Trades Genius Bruce Lee Swartznegger Silver Tongue Mr Handy which is absurd, even for a starting Major Hero in an RPG. I'd prefer a New Vegas approach, because at least it gives you a quirky, yet effective short description of how good you are at that given level. i.e. having "Doomsday Pecs" at 9 Strength is enough to give me an understanding that my character is swole af. With a starting min 2 and max 8, it's pretty strange and hard to have an understanding of just how much good am I. Am I a genius if my Int is 8? Am I an olympic Arnie at 8 Body? Doesn't seem like it and I honestly don't understand why it's like that.
    Not only that, but also with a classic 1 to 10 it's easier to convert Cyberpunk 2020 characters like Adam Smasher, which would've given a clear example of an endgame character, which in return may give the players and GM a better understanding of how to build a character.
    DV description on page 129 does give a general guide, but it doesn't explain why the Max and Min limit of 8 and 2 respectively, unless it's for balance reasons, but that is contradicted by the Grafted Muscle limit of 10 in Body, since Cyberware is stronger/better than meat.
    What should I do? Homebrew? Go RAW? Mix up or edit it into a 1 to 10 but keep other parts?

    • @JonJonTheWise
      @JonJonTheWise  Год назад +3

      Minimum stats, skills, role abilities are 1 and maximum are 10. The character creation limitations are there for balancing. This way every starting character starts around the same spot. With other things like cyberware or drugs, you can boost those numbers. The best natural athlete will always be at a Body 8. Anything past that is unnatural. 10 being the max and anything past 10 being a super edge case.
      Do whatever makes you happy

    • @someonesvagabond
      @someonesvagabond Год назад

      @@JonJonTheWise Thanks!
      If you don't mind helping further, things like Cool and Int (and similar stats), do they not follow the same meta rules like Body, since they aren't physically tied?
      Because while the 8 Body (forced) limit is understandable, with it being the physical human limit for a "natural" character. Things like Cool or Int aren't. As a GM I want to allow players to have the ability to make logical (i.e. such a human can exist from birth) characters with the rule that anything above 8 in a Stat comes with a x2 price for 9, and x4 for 10 (similar to how IP is spent). However, I can see them asking, "What does an 8 or 10 Cool or Int mean? How good is that from a RP perspective?"
      In this case, using Int as an example, if I were describe a 10 Int, would it mean their character is a Genius or near Genius level?
