I got two kuhli loaches from a friend who could no longer keep them. I released them to my community tank and didnt see them for 2 years. Today I started a total redo of my setup and found 5! So I guess I was a succesful by accident :D
I managed to convince my snake-phobic mom that I had bought 4 water-dwelling snakes for my tank. She almost had me emancipated then and there. Worth it.
These have always seemed to be the Party fish of the aquarium. Remind me of some guys that lived next door in the 70's. Party hard all night, sleep all day afterwards.
I have been able to train mine to go into the net when i do deep cleans on some of my tanks. I started out putting their favorite food in the net and they learned that the net means brine shrimp so they want to go into it.
Kuhli are my favorite fish, honestly. I have 3 striped and 1 black loach in a guppy communal tank and they're always out playing. they spend most of their time swimming around and against the glass, along my bubble wall and playing in their sand pool that I put in there so they could burrow separately than my planted substrate. They've managed to become the stars of my tank. I got them after watching this video months ago when I was first getting into the hobby. Thanks for all you do cory!
@@sophiadeloach6515 hey Sophia hello I just purchased a pair of kuhli loach my tank is not planted so what should I give them to eat any idea ???? I got flakes and dry tublix worms ??
"mostly shy" and "nocturnal" definitely doesn't describe my bunch of nutters, I don't think they ever sleep. Definitely agree easy to keep, only lost one to the filter before we started wrapping the inlet with very course sponge to let them grow out.
I love my Kuhli Loaches, everyone always says that they hide away but mine are out constantly. Probably helps that i've got them in a well planted tank, so they know if they are ever in danger they have plenty of places to hide.
@@turnipsucks6416 oh there are a few more tricks. The more loaches you have the more active they become. High light certainly makes them stay down more. And while a load of plants does make them feel more secure, remember they're still slender grounddwellers. They'll be less shy but still in an area where they stand out less. So I dunno, if youbhave plants that are more dense in the upper areas they're easier to spot. Oh and try to feed them close to the viewing panels.
@@a.b.8080 Great tips. For now I'm still working on balancing the tank out and working with a little bit of transitional melt (recent issue) with S. Repens I purchased. Super excited....Cory has been my #1 go to on EVERY SINGLE FACET OF RESEARCH I HAVE COMPLETED. A female guppy is very pregnant, so I'm watching out for fry every morning. Well, today ( full weeks after the move) I found two Buenos Aires fry in my guppy tank. Still no guppy fry. i didn't intend to breed buenos aires, but they're here and they're welcome!
I used to have two Kuhli loaches... very hardy and made me feel I was a very good pet owner because they lived for at least 8 or 9 years in my aquarium. Also, they seemed not to need any “care” at all. Lol. Planning to get three Kuhli loaches (just in the process of getting back into my childhood hobby... thanks to the pandemic). ;-)
I have found if you have a planted tank and caves made with wood, rocks or other decorations giving them hiding places, you will see them much more; especially when you feed you fish as they are not afraid to come out and get their share of the food, because they have safe places to retreat to if they feel unsure, fearful or threatened. They will find their favorite place and group up together for safety and security. They are very hard to catch in a highly decorated planted tank as they are very fast and can change direction in a split second. But they are so neat to see then swimming about the root around in the substrate or peek out from hiding somewhere, like are you looking for me, here I am or I see you can you find me? They also help in tank cleanup with their digging and poking around in places like plant near the roots or crevices that water may not flow to much, as the wiggly and poke around it causes the detritus to keep actively moving in the water column so the filter can suck it up and remove it properly. Highly recommend them but have several at one time I personally like five or six as they are so fun to watch them interact with each other. Also make sure you have a tight cover on your aquarium as they have been know to get out the aquarium to explore.

Khulli loaches are awesome! Lots of variation in personalities. Some hide all the time, others will glass surf the sides of their tank, and others will explore and hang out in odd places like the top of HOB filters (all they need is just a tiny bit of water to do this).
I'd get 4-5 more when possible as they really like "friends" and because of their personalities you might never really see the one. Some like to keep a low profile and others will be all over the place. I bought 9 years ago and have never seen more than 5 at once unless I was rescaping the tank and had pulled everything out.

Okay good, thank you! I just got two beautiful gold kuhli loaches from Petco. They are in pristine condition. I wasn't sure if I was feeding them correctly and I can't see all the shrimp I got so I wasn't sure... I was like I thiiiink they are carnivorous or at least omnivore.. I thought I saw somewhere that the shrimp pellets would be okay til I could get a more specific diet... Honestly, I ADORE them! They are so goofy and animated. I have an established 55 gal. fairly planted peaceful community tank of goldfish, guppies, rasboras, rainbows, and tetras mostly ordered from Aqua Huna. Then I decided to order a few snails and a pack of 6 Kuhlis. After acclimating and quarantining them for almost 4 hrs. I released them in the tank and the Kuhlis all scooted into the rocks and plants in a blink. This was 2 days and up to now I haven't seen any of the 6 Kuhlis at all. My auto feeder is set at 2X/day and once a day, I would manually feed them frozen brine shrimps also. The tank is also using 2 strips of 48" LEDs, one is set to just red 24/7 but the other is set to multi-color at 12 hrs daily. Also, there are 4 air bubblers, 2 Marineland in tank filters, and (2) 800 gph wavemakers. I'm starting to wonder where the Kuhlis are. How do I entice the Kuhlis to come out? I need your expert advice on this Cory. Thanks and have a good day.
the key to actually being able to see your Kuhlis is to make sure your tank is dense with hiding spots...plants, rocks, whatever...and keeping them in groups of 5 or more. they will go NUTS when they have buddies to play with
I adore my Kuhli loaches! I have the black kind and they're so funny to watch. Some like to swim into the bubbler and float up and then float back down to the bottom.
The cutest tank I ever had was a 5g planted with a beautiful betta, 6 kuli loaches, and asassine snails. The kuli loaches were always out and about and forraging for and crumbs that somebody might have missed.
ShelbyRae Lane I’m literally doing this but in a planted 30G and I’m gonna have schooling ember tetras as well. I’m super excited and glad to see someone have the same idea as me haha
I have both pangio kuhli and pangio pangia, "regular" and black kuhli loaches. In my experiense, the black ones are way less shy even though I have more of the regular kind. They are always swiming about, super fun, super peaceful - absolutely love them ❤️
that is because they need to be more, i have 8 and they don't hide at all i can see them at all times searching for food, swiming though the plants etc...
For some reason this wiggly thing ended up in my top filter for about a day, I didn’t know at first but then realized when I was about to wash the filter matt and I saw them hiding in the ceramic balls. And then I remembered I unplugged the filter because it was full and they probably somehow find a way to go up there. Luckily there are still a bit of water left since the filter was clogged.
I thought Kuhli loaches looked really weird, like snakes (although snakes don’t bother me I just don’t care for them.) But today I saw a handful of them just dive into the gravel and disappear in a half a second or so and my instant reaction was ‘I have GOT to get some of those!! That’s so cool!!!!
I have 2 khuli loaches and barely ever see them. It’s only the first month but they are almost always fully submerged in the ground. Also I have bloodworms and sinking pellets but my other fish - barbs and tetra - seem to love those as well
Nice video on the piggly wigglies. Mine are big and fat and five years old. They like to hide under pieces of wood. So much fun to watch them come out and eat.
I had these once and they were very enjoyable. The only thing that bothers me about reclusive creatures in my tanks is if they die I'll never know until too late, maybe even never know at all.
Hi cory that’s good know about them I’m going to get them when I do my planted tank in my 55 gal tank. I’m going to my plants from your store. You guys are great and I love your products.
Is there a specific quarantine protocol for Kuhli loaches? Will the quarantine med trio work ok on them, with no harm? I’ll have to go back and listen to that video again to double check but thought I’d ask, too. Just ordered the med trio from your store and can’t wait to get it and put it to use! Thanks for all you do Cory, I am learning so much from watching your videos. I especially appreciate the way that you take the time to give really detailed information and the contingencies of so many things in this hobby. Sometimes the sheer complexity of it all makes my head swim, but I love that you explain the ‘why’s’ behind the possibilities and the if this, then that, answers.
I know from experience that khuli loaches are hell to get out after you add them! They're very fun to watch though because they dart all over the place after the lights go out.
They’re tropical (minimum of 24 degrees) so you’d need a heater. Or if you have a cold water set up there’s always the weather loach (Misgurnus angullicaudatus). Bigger and not so colourful, but still cute AF.
I just love your fish profiles. They are the best! Practical and sensible advice. Keep them coming! Also, if you take request for these, do emperor tetra's once. I'd love to try these fish once.
Please consider doing a video listing some fish that are shrimp and snail safe! I just got a 55g tank and I am planning on stocking it with small fish and centering everything around shrimp and snails! Thanks for the videos! I am really learning a lot!
A 55 gallon with shrimp? Me too man. I can tell you, it offers a lot of freedom becuase with dense planting there will always be space for the shrimp. I've successfully kept a butterfly fish (ravenous hunter that can eat crickets but never dives an inch), marbled hatchats (tiny hunter that never dives), otocinclus (safest fish), anchor catfish, indian glass catfish (big-ish for the list but such tiny tiny mouths), threadfin rainbowfish (tiny mouth as well), norman's lampeye, celestial pearl danio, pygmy and dwarf corydoras, some small freshwater halfbeaks (don't dive either), bristlenose catfish (surprised me), musquito rasboras (smallest damn fish you'll find), kuhli loach (tiny mouth) Never noticed a single issue in all those years. Prolific breeding. Though bristlenose experiences may vary. And I needed a special lowflow set up for they musquito ras and the hatchets. And eh, I also know someone with 2 angelfish and dwarf shrimp in a tank so I guess anything can be done. At the cost of some shrimp though. Good luck, you'll find something you'll enjoy to no end.
LFS don’t have any of these but I’ve been able to acquire black ones. I have three so far and they move around so much. Never hide longer than five seconds.
Aquarium Co-Op I’ve got a 19 gallon tank, I’m planning on putting a blue gourami in there and maybe some ember tetras or cherry barbs. What would u recommend and how many? What else could I put in there for the bottom?
Heyhey, Hope you and Dorkula Have a fantastic holiday, recharge them batteries but more important,"" family time ""without all the trappings of the outside world gate crashing your time. :) xx
I have a 15 gallon fluval flex tank and was just wondering if this would be suitable to keep three of them. At the moment I have three guppies and two mollies they’re kinda annoying and was just gonna give them to my friend and get these instead cause they’re cool. Is this tank good enough? Large enough? I also have two large live plants in it and a big cave then the rest is fine gravel and larger rocks. Is that good?
Years ago I got 5 of these guys. Put'em in my tank and they disappeared. Cut to about 3 years later I was breaking down my tank to start over and completely forgot they were in there. While rinsing the gravel I found all of them squiggling around in the bucket
so do you have to have plants in a tank for khuli loaches also would 3 black khuli loaches and 4 or 5 zebra danios fit in a 10 gallon tank or would that be to crowded
The hiding is one of my main complaints with this fish. I got it because of its "eel" appearance, but once in the tank, I never saw it again for like 2 weeks. I get fish to look at, and if they hide from me, they're not going in my tank.
How many did you have? Did you have plants? I'd like to get some to see them too, but I don't have any plants right now so I'm thinking I'll need to get a good amount of plants first

the key to actually being able to see your Kuhlis is to make sure your tank is dense with hiding spots...plants, rocks, whatever...and keeping them in groups of 5 or more. they will go NUTS when they have buddies to play with
I adore my Kuhli loaches!
Uuh 6 kuhlis in a 5 gallon…
I don't have many favourite things in my life, but kuhli loaches are one of them. Just look at 'em tumble at 1:33 .
These guys are so cool! Thanks for the information!
I have both pangio kuhli and pangio pangia, "regular" and black kuhli loaches. In my experiense, the black ones are way less shy even though I have more of the regular kind. They are always swiming about, super fun, super peaceful - absolutely love them ❤️
I totally agree. I have kept both over the years and my black kuhlis are out and about a lot, especially at feeding time, lol.
They are awesome, i had mine jumping quite a few times so make sure u have a lid.
Big question, will they be capable of eating planaria worms? :)
Shy isn't the word for them had 2 for 10y seen the about 20 time's 😂🤣😂
that is because they need to be more, i have 8 and they don't hide at all i can see them at all times searching for food, swiming though the plants etc...
I have 4, and see them early mornings and evenings through the night. They always come out during feeding. They're wild
well, you only have 2. That makes them uncomfortable
Get more then two and get some fish that are not shy to show them it’s okay to be out in the open
i love these guys!
This is amazing! I want one now:)
I'm going to get some as well.
Excellent video and advice...many thanks.
Awesome Vid Man! I got 4 today just after watching this!
Thank you Cory
I'm getting some for my 75gal either at the end of this month or the beginning of next. I'm super excited!
Yeeesssssss! These are one of my favorite fish so glad you featured them
Love these little loaches and if you want a medium sized loaches try dojo they are the class clowns funny and friendly
dojos and clowns get to almost 12"+ long though, so make sure you have an adequate tank to anyone out there!
I learn so much from aquarium co op
Hi cory that’s good know about them I’m going to get them when I do my planted tank in my 55 gal tank. I’m going to my plants from your store. You guys are great and I love your products.
Best content on youtube
Every neat fish I see in a store that I google, Cory has a video for it.
thank you, your very knowledgeable :)
I know from experience that khuli loaches are hell to get out after you add them! They're very fun to watch though because they dart all over the place after the lights go out.
Hands down, always been my favorite loach
Thanks for the vid 👍🏼
Awesome video as always! Heater or no heater for the Luhlie Loaches? Thanks! 😎
I've successfully kept a butterfly fish (ravenous hunter that can eat crickets but never dives an inch), marbled hatchats (tiny hunter that never dives), otocinclus (safest fish), anchor catfish, indian glass catfish (big-ish for the list but such tiny tiny mouths), threadfin rainbowfish (tiny mouth as well), norman's lampeye, celestial pearl danio, pygmy and dwarf corydoras, some small freshwater halfbeaks (don't dive either), bristlenose catfish (surprised me), musquito rasboras (smallest damn fish you'll find), kuhli loach (tiny mouth)
Never noticed a single issue in all those years.
You should do a fish tutorial well crustacean tutorial on the panther crab !
LFS don’t have any of these but I’ve been able to acquire black ones. I have three so far and they move around so much. Never hide longer than five seconds.
we carry the black ones at my Petsmart if you have one near you
Great tutorial one of my favorite fish! Good job! Can't wait for the next one.

:) xx
you can breed them in rocks and long pvc pipes. 25cm ground is good for the breeding
Very hard to get in a net , such beautiful Fish, I love them, hard to find, seems everyone has the same idea where i live.
Good vid. Thanks👍
Thanks great informational video
Wow these are so cool! I’d love to get one but I have three cory catfish and a female betta in a 5 gallon tank.
awesome video
so do you have to have plants in a tank for khuli loaches also would 3 black khuli loaches and 4 or 5 zebra danios fit in a 10 gallon tank or would that be to crowded
I have one in 10 gallon it doesn’t rest constantly going round & round on glass the most active fish I have seen
Do you think I could keep a school of them with cory cats? I’m getting a 55 gal and was wondering if they would have any issues
Would a 20 gallon high be big enough for a few kuhlis and maybe some tank mates?
Was hoping you'd tell us what temperature to keep them in
@aquarium co-op will different kuhli types crossbreed? I have kuhlii now, adding shelfordii tomorrow. If yes, any idea of outcome?!
Took local pet store 45 minutes to catch three of them you aren't kidding. Lol it was so comical I almost told her to forget it I waited so long.
The hiding is one of my main complaints with this fish. I got it because of its "eel" appearance, but once in the tank, I never saw it again for like 2 weeks. I get fish to look at, and if they hide from me, they're not going in my tank.
How many did you have? Did you have plants? I'd like to get some to see them too, but I don't have any plants right now so I'm thinking I'll need to get a good amount of plants first
@@mellifluousangel4076 I did not have live plants.
Does the same rule apply for kuhli loach-Need to buy several of the same color or can you mix and match?
I've eve tried Kuhli's. Someday I'd like too. Good info Cory!
