Thank you for your information on the Kuhli Loach! I fell in love with them as a child. My babysitter had one in her tank and I'd watch it for HOURS! I vowed that I'd own one when I grew up! Today, I got my first pair! They are ADORABLE!! I'm SO EXCITED to add them to my community tank! As always, your content is solid, with excellent facts and advice! So glad to have you to turn to when a question arises. Thank you for another fine video, The Dave!
Wonderful closeups of these lovely friends. I got a group of kuhli loaches recently and I am enjoying them immensely. I'd been feeding mini pellets because their mouths seemed so tiny, but watching yours happpily dragging those cichlid pellets away made me realize I had been underestimating them!
Thank you. I do try to include as much information as I can in all of my videos! The problem I run into is what to include and what to leave out. . . :-)
Thank you for sharing this magnificent footage of my favorite fishes! How incredible to see them close-up in such beautiful definition. Your commentary text is also excellent. Thank you!!!
I'm just watching this right now and I'm smiling. Khulis are amongst my favorite fish, they remind me of a bunch of holdover hippies from the 70's. They are the party animals of an aquarium. Larger numbers can certainly give them more confidence. As well the term, "The more the merrier," was never so true! Great video!
I love how Kuhli loaches tend to disappear in a planted tank. After a while, it's easy to forget they're in there, until they magically appear at feeding time.
Superb video. So many adorable moments. I have around 60 Pangio loaches (P semicincta, P kuhli myersi, and P. oblonga). I really cherish these fish and spend a lot of time observing them, but this video,--with its spectacular close-ups--offered me a deeper perspective on these creatures. Very nicely done.
Just a wonderful video - amazing footage, and captivating on its own without voice or music. I hope more people see this, and also realize that for most fish, providing tons of hiding places helps you see them more. I see so many barren tanks with maybe 1 ornament and 2 fake plants and people say, "But I want to SEE the fish" - not realizing they will get the most wonderful views, behaviour, and colour of many of their fish if they would just give them safe haven.
Thank you for watching my video. I agree with your observations completely! I would also like to add that natural is the way to go; lots of driftwood and live plants create a healthier and more balanced environment. Thanks again, The Dave . . .
I'm really glad to see that now you have many more subscribers! It's an honour to support great channels since the beginning, sometimes there are beautiful content without many views but all of us can support and let the hobbie grow in this way.
Great. Gave me a better appreciation for our Kuhli loaches in our community tank. They are fun to watch when they are out. This was also educational. Thanks.
I had 5 of these guys in a 29 gal with gravel and they used to like to bury themselves in it. They'd work their way into any crevice and squirm down to the bottom. Eventually they all disappeared and I assumed they were dead. 3 years later while breaking the tank down to rebuild it I was washing the gravel and lo and behold all five of them were squirming around. Now I have a big 40 gal breeder and 12 of these guys on the way. I used to call them my little tank noodles.
I have been thinking about getting back into fish keeping and when I saw these fish whilst looking for something simple and cute, I knew they were the one. Your video is inspiring and informational and I love it. I've watched a few of your videos and I thank you for everything you put up
The only other videos I have ever seen that can stand up to this one are... yours! Wow! Just... Wow!! My Kuhli loaches came out of the woodwork to watch this video. The footage of them passing gravel out their gills was amazing. My whole family got up from the dessert table where they were having tea and facebooking to come watch this video - fullscreen (27") at 1080! I can't even pay them to do that!! Are you sure you don't secretly work at National Geographic...
Plenty of valuable knowledge about fish Kuhli loach. I have knew so little about them before, they seem to be funny and joyful fishes. Time to know them more.
Thank you for watching another video my friend. They are a wonderful fish to have. They like to hide a lot, but when they do come out to play, it's always nice to see them.

It really is an addictive hobby. You know the old saying, "there are lots of fish in the sea" ? Well, that's why it's so addictive, there are just so many many fish !!! I like big tanks with lots of little fish, rather than a big tank with one or two big fish. My advice is to keep it simple. Single species setups are far less problematic than community tanks. And keep it inexpensive by using sponge filters rather than expensive canister filters, and filters where there are things to replace. Simple setups mean more time to enjoy the fish!!! :-)
One tank I used to have had 10 kuhli loaches and 6 glass cats, they both reproduced. They were in a 30 gal. tank in my bedroom, so it wasn't as bright or as active around it as my other tanks. I only did a water change on it about every 3 weeks, so it was pretty much undisturbed most of the time. I had a night light with a blue Christmas tree bulb in it that I sat on the glass hood so I could see them at night. :)
Hi! This is just great. I fell in love with Kuhlis so long ago but you are the first to provide me with such a detaild and so well presented information. I thought I do not have good habitat for Kuhlis but now I undesrtand more and see my tank as quite proper. And actually I was wondering today if leaves would work well for my guys. I think it's the first time I'm happy with Autumn :D Gonna buy more loaches this week (lost some due to moving to another town) + have walk in a park searching for material :D
Hi, thanks for watching the video. Leaves are a great addition to the tank, but, be make sure whatever leaves you collect are clean and don't have any chemicals or pesticides on them
So underrated little fish, great in a small community tank, one of my favourites, great production and content, easy viewing, informative and no stupid voice overs, top class thanks.
Excellent documentary. I enjoyed that very much. I have been a Kuhli Loach fan for decades but I still learned something plus the closeups were outstanding.
I really love how you make your videos, very informative with great shots without any blaring music or dumb background track going on. I'm gonna add 8 of these guys to my 20 long after this video!
Thanks for the great job you did with this video. I can tell not only did you do your homework, but you spent much time preparing it. Keep you the great work!

Thanks for the informatie! What an amazing and fascinating fish :) .Saw them in the store and fell in love. What kind of plants are dens enough for them ? So I can make them really happy. I want to make a tank for them and some Otocinclus arnoldi.
Another beautifully shot species spotlight video from The Dave (discovered/subscribed to this channel last week via the Dwarf Puffer video). Both educational and informative, top notch.
What a great video. My wife has always loved these fish so they were always part of our community tank. Over the years they’ve grown on me also but this is the first time I’ve seen information in a video about them. I’m going to purchase more so the two I have hopefully become a calmer group. Great stuff, thanks again.
I think one fact that wasn’t mentioned in this (correct me if I’m wrong) is that they require very stable conditions. You don’t want to put them through huge water changes, temperature changes or high levels of nitrates.
great stuff sir. i keep my kuhli loaches in bare bottom setup. they are doing great so far. no sand is necessary. they require hiding places however, and small and non aggressive inmates, shrimp, otos and neon tetras in my case. they are being bred on farms in SE asia, but they keep that info a secret. these fish are some of my earliest memories as a kid, when i was taken into pet shop. charming bastards they are.
This was a wonderful, clear and beautiful video. Thank you, thank you. I have 3 Kuhil loaches in my community tank. I love to watch them interact with my other fish during feeding time. Great job!!!
6:37 This actually happened to mine just after the first week I got him. I found him one morning inside the filter, still alive! He has been dubbed Sharkbait. Got a sponge cover for the intake after that.
I found mine inside the canister filter! Surprisingly and thankfully it was still alive. I’ve covered the intake of my canister now with some fine netting.
I've started a project with my 10 khuli loaches to identify them based on their patterns on their right flank. 3/10 so far, and they are unphased by my glass catfish so I see them often. Amazing video and thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Hi, that sounds like an interesting project. I imagin their patterns are unique like finger prints. Here's a thought, with a slight twist . . . Put them all in a white-bottomed container and take photographs of them from the top ( singly or as a group). It will give you a quick way of seeing / recording all of their patterns from an aerial perspective. The real problem will be catching them all !
Great video! Thank you! I had one of these for 3 years, until it found its way out of the tank by jumping during a water change, without me seeing it,so I found the poor thing dried up like a chili peper.
You could always start your own culture of white worms or grindal worms to feed the killifish. Or they will take flake food, but they may not breed without live food.
I love my Kuhlis! They are total spazzes and they crack me up when they go nuts in the tank. That being said, I can't imagine what the first guy who saw them and said "yeah, those would look great in an aquarium" was thinking.
Hi, thanks for watching the video and subscribing ! My first love was snakes, and these Kuhli loaches allow me to have little snakes in the aquarium!!! It's the best of both worlds . . .
@@TheDave333 That makes sense to me. Personally, snakes give me the heebie-jeebies. My son wanted an eel, and since I didn't have the proper tank for one, we got "Kuhli and the Gang". Now we really like them and have moved some of the bigger ones from the Guppy tank "Guptropolis" to our larger aquarium "Frank the Tank" (yes, we name everything, including our tanks)
This is an amazing video because of the detailed shots and great information. Thank you so much for such a helpful video! You gained a new subscriber today.
Just watched this again for the I don't know how many time. lol. I'm sure that it won't be the last time. I'm getting several Pangio oblonga in a few days with several Pangio kuhli in a month or so. My water pH stays at about 7.0, sometimes 7.4 so I hope that they do well. I think stability is most important.
You are correct. Fish are pretty adaptable, and stability is far more important than a precise pH. Best of luck with the oblonga, and thanks for watching my videos. :-D
My Khuli's (Pangio) have been happy for a year now and my water is very hard, My ph is 8.2. They live with a pea puffer and 2 Amano shrimp. I keep the water very clean with sand and plants. I only have 2, I found them at a swap meet, I want to get more but haven't seen them anywhere. I love these guys!
Maaaan...that was the best presentation on Kuhli Loaches..I've ever seen. Would definitely like to have more details on the camera and setup used. I'm totally your fan and I'm definitely sharing this video.
Thanks for watching the video., ans taking the time to leave a comment. Below the video description, there's a link to the same camera that I used. I also use detachable lenses that are not listed in the description. Thanks again.. :-)
I have one in a 55g tank that will be for shrimp. I just ordered 10. Can't wait for them to get here. Glad I found this video. Will check to see more recent ones. Thank you
@@TheDave333 That's true, scooba diving is going to be very hard for me. I love and respect fish but I wish with all of my heart to reach out and give them little pats.
i have a question, my friend gave me a 1 loach . When it got in the tank. It was fine. Hiding. But after an hour O saw it swimming so fast around the tank up and down, I got it yesterday. During night and day, it will hide few moments later it will swim in front of the tank up and down and around. Im so worried is it normal or is it stressed out? Please help.
That's actually very normal behavior. Mine sometimes do it for days! A lot of the time, it's right after I do a water change. It will stop after a while. Their mating behavior is a somewhat similar.
You're very welcome. He should be fine, as long as the other fish are not aggressive. Kuhli loaches like to hide, and are a little shy, but it's always a nice treat when they do make an appearance. Be sure to provide places for it to hide.
Great video, lots of info I did not know. I have a 35 gallon tank and have always had loaches. My sneaky little loaches have been breeding without me noticing until today. I now have quite a few more. I have gravel and was wondering if I could add sand on part of the tank to help the little ones hide a bit better. Keep up the amazing videos.
Congratulations on your expanding loach family! Yes, you can add sand to part of the aquarium. If you don't have them yet, live plants are also a nice addition. Nice Tom Petty cover by the way !!! :-)
They may be bottom dwellers but I will tell you they are jumpers. Keep your lids on tight unless you want to find them dried out like a worm on the driveway.
Have you ever gone all out on shrimp and tried all different colors patterns and even tried selling them?? Because my dad wants to sell shrimp but all of the shrimp died because of a catfish we thought died actually just hibernated and ate them all
I've never tried breeding them in large numbers for sale. Funny story with the catfish ! They do disappear sometimes, and then suddenly show up one day out of nowhere. . .
can kuhli loach combined with many diff kind of shrimp? for example Red cherry. I also have plenty of shrimp fry. is it safe for the dry if I add kuhli loach? I understand that they don't bother shrimp, but how about the fry? thanks
I’m happy I read the comments I have a planted tank with gravel and I’d love to add a few of these. This video is awesome great to watch I love the lack of sound. Let the fish talk to us. Lol thank you for the info.
Planning to do a 10G with 3 of these, 1 male betta and 1 black racer nerite snail!!have been wanting to get some of these for a while now!! thank you for the informative video!!!
About half a week ago I got a Kuhli loach and a guppy to add to my tank, I also had a tetra in there as well, at first the loach was super shy and I rarely saw it, but the past 2 days it's been swimming all around the tank like it was where I got it, but I read online that there nocturnal and in your video they like to be with 6 or more other loaches, so is mine just gifted or is this normal or what, thanks! Nice vid
Kuhli loaches are normally pretty shy and you don't see them very much, but every once in a while, they do this thing where they are out and about all day long swimming around like crazy! I've seen them swim around like crazy for days and days!!! It happens a lot when I do a big water change. They also mate in a similar fashion where they swim up and down for long periods of time, but this is done in pairs or in groups. As long as it's eating normally, I wouldn't worry too much. :-)
haha, they actually look pretty cute. I'm getting a bunch of new plants so I might pick a few of these up if I see them around. I have a bunch of cories and a pleco though, I don't know if they'd do too well with them?
Would it be ok to just have two in my tank? I know they like to socialize but i have to share my tank. I really like them but i dont want them stressed out if they absolutely needore than two. Do you have any suggestions?
Do they behave well with plecos? Even the "giant" plecos? Also, it would be a great idea to have a tank with only kuhli loaches (i mean the only species of fish, sry im not english so im not that good at talking it)
Yes, they should be fine with all types of Plecos. Yes, it would be a great idea to have a single species Kuhli loach tank. Many people keep them that way.
Awesome video! So informative! Thanks a lot for that. I've just lost my 2 kuhlis and trying to figure out what went wrong. I loved them, they were the most interesting fishes I had.

Thank you for yet another exemplary video!
You're very welcome, and thank you for watching it. I'll be releasing a new one this weekend !
What a great video. My wife has always loved these fish so they were always part of our community tank. Over the years they’ve grown on me also but this is the first time I’ve seen information in a video about them. I’m going to purchase more so the two I have hopefully become a calmer group. Great stuff, thanks again.
You are very welcome :-D
4:24 Did that fish just blink?
Yes, sort of. It has a *nictitating membrane* that can come down over the eye. Sharks have something similar. Nice catch!!!
I think one fact that wasn’t mentioned in this (correct me if I’m wrong) is that they require very stable conditions. You don’t want to put them through huge water changes, temperature changes or high levels of nitrates.
You are correct, and that can be said of most fish. Some like the Khuli Loach, are more tolerant than others.
great stuff sir. i keep my kuhli loaches in bare bottom setup. they are doing great so far. no sand is necessary. they require hiding places however, and small and non aggressive inmates, shrimp, otos and neon tetras in my case. they are being bred on farms in SE asia, but they keep that info a secret. these fish are some of my earliest memories as a kid, when i was taken into pet shop. charming bastards they are.
Thank you for watching my video and commenting. I remember these fish as a child as well. Very unusual and definitely charming.
This was a wonderful, clear and beautiful video. Thank you, thank you. I have 3 Kuhil loaches in my community tank. I love to watch them interact with my other fish during feeding time. Great job!!!
Thank you very much. . . They are fun to watch.
6:37 This actually happened to mine just after the first week I got him. I found him one morning inside the filter, still alive! He has been dubbed Sharkbait. Got a sponge cover for the intake after that.
Good thinking, and at the same time you've also increased the biological filtration on your filter. Win- win !!! Thanks for watching the video. :-D
I found mine inside the canister filter! Surprisingly and thankfully it was still alive. I’ve covered the intake of my canister now with some fine netting.
Thanks The Dave
You're welcome
Thank you Dave.
:-D
Thanks for watching the video. I am always saddened when I lose one of my little friends. . . .
my favourite fish, but don’t have them at the moment. miss those night diggings 😂
Have you ever kept KIllifish? They are my favorite at the moment.
The Dave i watched your video, they are amusing, but local market is none existing. even if you get killifish, crickets will be a problem)
I love the name "Kuhli and the Gang ! Awesome ! You have some very creative names for things. . . Best of luck with everything. :-D
This is an amazing video because of the detailed shots and great information.
Thank you so much for such a helpful video!
You gained a new subscriber today.
Thank you very much for the positive feedback, and your subscription. :-D
Stunning video, great info just needs a little sound
Thanks for watching the video. All of my more recent documentaries use narration, so there's sound. :-)
Thank you
You're very welcome. :-)
I wish fish were hugable, why do they have to be so cute
Big fish can be hugged, but they don't like it. :-D
@@TheDave333 That's true, scooba diving is going to be very hard for me. I love and respect fish but I wish with all of my heart to reach out and give them little pats.
I know exactly what you mean! :-D
Awesome video. I love these loaches but my water is too hard to keep them. I'll have to leave it to someone more experienced. 💚🐠💚
Thanks for checking out my video ! That's a shame about your water supply. . . . 1/2 rain water and 1/2 tap water maybe ??
Yaaay more videos davee!! I've been waiting😭😭
Very beautifully done and so informative! Thanks for your time and effort to educate about this adorable little fish.
You are welcome, and thank you for watching the video. :-D
Great video!
Thanks!
i have a question, my friend gave me a 1 loach .
@@TheDave333 thank you so much for replying. I thought it feels threatened or something because hes alone with different kind of fish in my tank.
You're very welcome. He should be fine, as long as the other fish are not aggressive. Kuhli loaches like to hide, and are a little shy, but it's always a nice treat when they do make an appearance. Be sure to provide places for it to hide.
the "Kholi Dance" is as majestic as it is random. As they age it tends to stop, but young once dance every day.
This is, by far, the best video there is about Khuli loach care 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
(And I’ve seen a lot!)
Thank you so much! 😁
They may be bottom dwellers but I will tell you they are jumpers. Keep your lids on tight unless you want to find them dried out like a worm on the driveway.
Great advice - they have also been known to just hang out on wet areas just above the waterline.
Great videos the Dave but I think they could benefit from some music
Thank you, and you're probably right. . . :-)
agree, smooth relaxing music will do great in these videos
Beautiful video. Great fish
Thanks. I think all fish keepers have had a Kuhli loach at one point or another. :-D
I really enjoyed this video! The footage is great. I've always liked Kuhli loaches, but never got to see how alien their faces are close up like that.
Hi ! Thanks for watching the video. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Kuhli loaches are interesting little fish.
I understand that they don't bother shrimp, but how about the fry? thanks
The Kuhli loaches seem to leave both the adults and their shrimplets alone. However, you never can tell what happens when the lights go out. . .
Oooh my favourite bottom dweller. Once had 6 in a 3ft tank, with gravel and when I stripped tank to move house I caught 18 of them!
Nice - they are very difficult to catch especially in a planted tank !
I had to empty tank of everything and catch them with a net & cup.
You're welcome !
@@TheDave333 thanks
One of my lil guys does laps daily, every once in a while his friends join him, it’s really fun to watch
haha, they actually look pretty cute. I'm getting a bunch of new plants so I might pick a few of these up if I see them around. I have a bunch of cories and a pleco though, I don't know if they'd do too well with them?
They should be fine together.
Appreciate the work you put into your videos!
Thank you! And I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. :-D
Love these guys! Thanks for the informative video.
you are very welcome. They were tough subjects to capture !
Would it be ok to just have two in my tank? I know they like to socialize but i have to share my tank. I really like them but i dont want them stressed out if they absolutely needore than two. Do you have any suggestions?
Having just one or two is fine, and that's probably what most people do.
@@TheDave333 thanks so much! I'm getting some black kuhlis this friday
Nice! I've read that the Black Kuhli loaches are more likely to spawn! :-)
The Dave thank you for answering, nice vid btw
Awesome video! So informative! Thanks a lot for that. I've just lost my 2 kuhlis and trying to figure out what went wrong. I loved them, they were the most interesting fishes I had.
Thanks for watching the video. Sorry to hear about your loaches.
What an excellent video! Thank you so much. All my kuhli loaches escaped (jumped) and died. I was clueless.
It's sad to hear about your loaches. . . :-(
