This is one of the few love songs Metallica ever did. James wrote this for his woman while he was homesick on tour in 1990.
Power Ballads in Metal are probably best described as Soft Metal, where it featured the heavy guitars and drums in at least some parts of the song, but is generally slower and not as lyrically or harmonically intense. This song, however, borders on Soft Metal and Soft Rock only because there's a lot more Acoustic guitar than Heavy guitar. The drums, however, remain pretty heavy throughout, so it's likely up to interpretation.

The slow songs and power ballads were a must if metal bands wanted to get onto mainstream radio. I remember when hearing Queensryche’s Silent Lucidity on a top 40’station. At the end of the song the DJ said, “now before you run out to buy this album, be warned, the rest of the album is very “different”.

S & M 1 is a permanent rotation on whatever I'm using to listen to music on. It is an INCREADABLY powerful album where the Metal doesn't overpower the stings & winds(but Lars really doesn't do the percussion section any favors, surprise surprise) & the extremely talented orchestra didn't over power the band. Absolutely stunning successful blending of two very different types of music together.

@@metaphoria3 From what I could hear, it was mostly just Lars being Lars & speeding up the beat during the song, that's pretty damn normal for him during a live performance. Kamen was able to keep the winds, brass & strings up to beat about 98% to 99% of Lars rushing. The percussion section really struggled on more than a few spots, but like I said, Lars being Lars. There's a reason he is considered one of rock & metals greats. He seems to be getting a better handle on his impulses to rush a song during live performances in the last 5 years or so, but he still wants to go really, REALLY fast, it's just his nature.

I am really enjoying being a spectator of this journey of metal discovery the Rappers are having :) They started off with a very niche prog rock and now are moving into the pillars of the Metal. I wonder if we're going to see them connecting Brian May's guitars with the 80ies Metal (basically, creating it), or shred prodigies like Jason Becker - gems on their own, or any other aspect of Metal they have not yet reached. There's so much more for them to experience! The journey is only beginning haha

I'd highly recommend, for another curve ball for Hollywood, to check out something from the S&M (Symphony & Metallica) albums.

Back when this came out on the black album Metallica took a lot of crap from the metal purist who felt that metal artist shouldn't do anything but metal. Called them sell outs for it. Metallica's response was yes we now sell out everywhere we go. The Black album changed their lives. And who knew some years later they would have an upstart band open for them that is just as controversial as themselves but in a different way. Babymetal opened for Metallica and changed Babymetal's lives. As they put it that's when they really got into metal. Umm I could see opening for them having that kinda affect. 4th of July is also Moa's Birthday. As of right now it's already the 4th and it's around 9:15am in Japan so Happy Birthday Moa.

The biggest names in British heavy metal are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Motörhead, Black Sabbath...most are from Birmingham except Iron Maiden who are from East London. Nothing Else Matters is actually a waltz.
Edit: It doesn't matter what category you put music in...who cares what it's called? It sounds great and that's the point, nothing else matters!

If I’m not mistaken I think Metallica wanted to prove they can play classical music with light rock and light metal in it too

Slipknot might have a smaller rabid fanbase, but those that they do have aren't just rabid, but down right fanatical. Slipknot really has earned their chops on the Metal circuit.
edit: Yes, this is the breakout hit from the "Black" album. It was the song that really exploded Metallica into a "MEGA" group. I heard this song on stations that would NEVER had played a Metallica track. It is Metallica's first "Power Ballad" that proved that they were more than just a Thrash Metal group, but yes this is still a "Metal" song, there are MANY variations of "Metal". Bob Rock had a massive influence in the evolution of the group.

Y'all should listen to the Metallica cover of Last Caress by the Misfits. Especially the live version from the Binge and Purge collection.
