Your videos gave me confidence to fix my ps4 controller that had buttons that were so sticky, I couldn't use it. Now, it's all cleaned, put back together, and functional! Thanks and love the videos!
Quick tip for cleaning adhesive residue and general cleaning where the utmost cleanliness is necessary: Instead of isopropyl, try using naphtha. It runs circles around alcohol when it comes to softening adhesive, and it leaves even less haze than alcohol for screen cleaning. The only drawback is it may be a little more expensive than alcohol. (Although it’s probably cheaper than that specialty grade 99.5% you got 😜)
They're so rare though. The average collector isn't likely to ever own one and the business margin for it isn't great. I'd love re-shells but it's terribly unlikely.
I've consumed loads of your gameboy light content recently as I can realistically only afford junk consoles. I get the feeling you make this look far easier than it actually is 😅
I forgot to tell you last time, but the 3d printed battery cover, to smooth it out you need to heat it up so the fine lines melt into a smooth pattern, a hairdryer or otherwise a heatgun should work. I've seen artists even use a candle
If you are going to backlight it, I personally recommend a kit from Hand Held Legend. Those kits usually work VERY well. Just throwing in my two cents.
@@genesischris1297 Yeah thanks. Collin over at THISDOESNOTCOMPUTE used one of theirs and the white one came out absolutely great, even without bitverting. Looks just like you think a backlit black and white screen should. Plus, I've known about handheld legends site since its infancy in the custom moding community so I feel like I can trust their products.
I've seen videos explaining that the lines of dead pixels on older gameboy screens come from the ribbon cable beginning to detach from the screen, an can be fixed with a soldering iron
I fixed my gb using that method when it had a vertical lines problem. I'm not sure this is the same problem - but yes the reflowing fixed the vertical lines nicely!
The issue cannot be fixed by that if it's a horizontal line or a dead pixel. The reason verticals lines appear is the cheap adhesive they used for a component on the screen is starting to peel.
I think you could try to salvage the old transparent reflective panel from the old screen without damaging it, remove the adhesive with some rubbing alcohol and put it back on the new screen
The back of the screen (the reflector) needs to be removed for the Gameboy Light's backlight to shine through. But, when you remove the reflector, it takes the polarizing film with it. Afterward, you just put a new back polarizer on, along with the backlight.
If you are careful it is possible to remove just the reflective layer and leave the rear polarizer, but it is quite a bit more difficult to do than just removing both rear layers.

Fantastic! I’ve never seen a good, detailed bunch of videos with a Gameboy Light. Thank you. But man, what is the color blue you used on that Gameboy Pocket you painted?!
really appreciate the bonus clip, i understand that you couldnt really make a video of just that. maybe you can do another mod with it bc im really digging the blue?
Years ago I tried this to fix one gameboy light just like you did, but was impossible to peel off pocket screen without loosing lines. I broke two of them and finally gave up.
Bro we need more Lets Refurb! are you creative enough to make your own custom shells? could be awesome if you did some graphic for the shells so that it isn't just a monochrome consol
I tried to replace the screen protector of the GB Pocket and when I reassemble the console and turn it on, the screen shows an horizontal line of missing pixels (not black pixels, empty), what went wrong? Can I fix it?
Another great Vid, been cool to watch your vids evolve over time. I don’t even own any OG game boys (DS onwards for me) but find watching your videos on them quite therapeutic. One question I do have though is what screwdriver set do you use? The thick looking dark grey ones. Need to get myself a good reliable quality set. Keep up the good work! Cheers.
Hi, I'm enjoying the video. Can I ask you a question? Is there any reason to replace the polarizing film after disassembling the liquid crystal of gbp? If I don't do that procedure and just implant the screen into the gbl, doesn't it work properly?
Can I use any polariser film? I have a GBP with front and rear polariser burn and the only replacements I seem to find are for backlighting, which I didn't really want to do. Another thing, would it be a bad idea to use a heat gun to try and release the adhesive from the polariser?
no, it isnt supposed to be. i was suprised when he didnt even mention that the screen's light was so dim. it should be at least 10 times brighter than that. and i have taken video of my gameboy light before and it shows up loads brighter than it actually looks in real life, so if his screen looks that dim on camera then its gonna be pretty difficult to play that in the dark.
@@HollowRick has nothing to do with the polarizer. the light would still shine through. its either a) weak connection b) light is nearly dead or is very worn out for whatever reason c) not enough power going to the light
@@HollowRick what are you referring to by EL specifically Also gameboy light color isnt a thing unless you backlight mod a gbc of course Even then its just a gbc with a backlight, untelated to the gameboy light

Nicely done! Need to add a Game Boy Light to my collection someday.
Thank you!

Great one! Thanks for sharing on how you do the polarizer part. That blue gameboy is awesome love the paint on it!
How has this marvel of a man not got 1 mil yet
We need someone to make repro shells for these
I agree the silver and gold ones are so beat up now it would be nice for some repro shells

Awesome video and I am attempting this myself! Do you not need to add a reflector screen to the back of the GBP screen?

i already hooked up to your channel modding game boy and k.o. gb watching here from the Philippines 👍🏻

Ok...Eliiot, finally gave in and bought a gameboy pocket. Now I just have to backlight it. Your mods and habits are rubbing off on me man! lol

The clear Game Boy looks cool.
Keep making these types of videos, I'm loving them! also is there any forum where I can get into refurbishing game boys and electronics?
Thank you! Ive asked for a video on this since the end of 2016 when i first got mine!!!

Is there a way to fix the original back light in the GB light or if it's out its out?
What about a gameboy pocket IPS screen in a gameboy light shell? The ability to use AA batteries over AAA would be a nice improvement.
When you leave the cap off your isopropyl alcohol it evaporates out of the bottle, too!
Please show your entire working GB collection.

Man, everytime you turn off the light so we can see better, they are no differences ahah
Weird question. Does a pocket shell fit on the Game Boy Light?
Alas, Another Gameboy Pocket without a screen!
I think the screen may have had a single vertical line on the far right
Though it may have just been the offset of the screen. 🤷♂️
