To the people who do the rebuilding of this fine locomotive, I wish you great success and hope that 2317 can be fully restored to it's original glory. Your work is appreciated greatly and is a proud reminder of the history of America and Canada both. God bless your efforts and keep everyone involved safe from accidents. I'll be 74 when she rolls out of the shop, but I'm looking forward to seeing the finished work.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. 3713's restoration is taking millenia, and once and if it is ever finished there's a possibility CN 3377 could be next for restoration. Steamtown no plans for a restoration for 2317, and probably won't for a very long time, if ever, since 3713 will be replacing it, and the possibility that 3377 will be getting rebuilt.
My, oh my, what a fine looking steamer this is! Love the sound of the bell and whistle on this and the day this hits the rails again after the 1472 day or 15 year overhaul of the boiler, I hope to see this operate. I know that the one time I came to Steamtown, the small little 0-6-0 number 26 from Baldwin was a fine little engine but number 2317 is a fine looking pacific type steamer! Unlike the R&N 425 which is a lighter duty pacific, this one is quite a bit more powerful than 425 and might have just has much power like the R&N 2102 even though 2102 is a Northern 4-8-4 type steamer. So, the day this fine locomotive is back to operation, I would hope to pay another visit to Steamtown to see this fine steamer in operation! Thanks for this great footage and take care. :)
CP 2317 was my favorite out of all the steamtown engines. When I grow Up, I will buy the engine for the Burlington and Iowa transportation museum, and restore it to operation.
@LocoCyc remember 26 was taken out of service in 2000 so 2317 had to "pinch hit" the 0-6-0. Keeping in mind 2317 doesnt do the Moscow trips anymore because their steamer is 3254. Also 26 is supposed to be hydro tested before operation so what can i say. plus 3713 needs at least 989000 dollars to complete her rebuild. but i do respect your opinion on 2317s retirement.
I don't think anyone could have created a production any better to celebrate the final run of a steam engine. I know the white flags don't show a celebration, and I definitely am not against steam, but I say it is a celebration because it will get many more years of life after its boiler is rebuilt! Thanks.
I love the video and awsome train!!!I gotta ask some questions. You said they only had 2 days left on the boiler? As in like acar about to overheat they know how mutch longer they got beofre the boiler overheats? Also you said 15 year restoration? They just dont have all the funds to do it in a lesser time frame or its realy that hard to restore a train? Lastly would you know what kind a paint they originally used on this train and what paint they will restore it with? Laquer or industrial?
Steamtown is just going through a rough patch, that's all. It happens to every railroad. Once they have all four engines running, railfans will regret what they say about steamtown. They might have to make up a new train ride at Railfest just to be able to use all four engines!
@AFBoone1 I was there on Friday and my cabride ticket that I paid for said June 25th, 2010 which was a Friday. Therefore the locomotive ran on Friday. 3254 sat on the turntable all day on Friday, not 2317. 2317 ran for the night photo session on Wednesday as well.
@97trainman What you hear is wrong. 26 will run again. 2317 will run again, the money for the engine's restoration is already in place. When time permits, 2317 will get worked on.
when i went down there last year, I got a cab ride in her. Did they finish that 0-6-0 that was in the shops? I know they wanted to get it running as this engine's replacement during it's repair.
Many reasons. First the have to strip the loco all the way down to the bare boiler and then do the needed work on all the thousands of parts like making new ones or fixing the old ones. Then the money issue. And then put all the parts back together then get the FRA to make sure it is capable of being run.
@parrthd1 No, it means its been 15 years since her last overhaul. That means she hasn't been overhauled majorly since 1985. The rebuild depends on who operates. If it has poor volunteers like the Black River and Western, it could take almost 10 years but I doubt it at Steamtown
The best engine that Steamtown could restore wouldn't take so much time, and money or effort would be CNR X10a class #47. That engine would be perfect for the Scranton Limited or other short hual trips. It could easily supplement Baldwin #26 should the need arise.
What he means is that every 15 years of operation no matter how often the engine is run the boiler is required to be rebuilt by law. Who knows how long it will take for it to be rebuilt.
@PereMarquette1223 Yeah Here Ontario, Hardly no mainline excurtion steam train, well there one in toronto, but i heard they are no current plan to restored, well not yet but soon.
@CSX6000 alright, I understand what you are saying. I apologize for my comments. From now on my comments will be only complementary. Can we have peace? BTW, they DONT have plans to restore 3254?
No the boiler time expires every 15 years, then it take about 3-5 years to replace or fix, maybe more if there are other steam locomotives waiting to be restored ahead of the 2317.
Federal Railroad Administration permits 15 years or 1472 days for a steam locomotive to run before it's due for a mandated inspection. It doesn't mean the restoration takes 15 years.
Thats cool:) Glad you explained it like that. The best thing is these trains were made in america and not china. Its sad jobs are going over seas where they make cheap crap that breaks. Back in the day these trains were made with pride here and they didnt have the tools we got today.
Locomotive Boilers needed a rebuild every five years, at least they do under Trasport Canada Reulations, so they are using the eqivalent running hours. The bell and whistle are not what I remember but often these items were "liberated" when the steamers were awaitin their fate.
15 years means that every 15 years, the boiler has to be inspected/repaired(FRA regulations). Not that the rebuild takes 15 years. Although, with the low funding of steamtown, it may actually take 15 years.
My uncle knew some people that restored a steam locomotive an it did take as near as long as they say it will I seriously think they don't have the money that why
well, it has a 15 year boiler ceritfication and when that time is up, the locomotive has to be take apart, inspected piece by piece, then put back together and the whole process can take alot more time and money then normal repairs or restoration from neglection in a park. I hope this comment helps.
The 2317 needs a month still of run time before it is deemed a American locomotive as it would be with American railroads longer than Canadian. Plus the Canadian fleet is in far better shape than the American fleet.
TheBrantfordRailfan There is a very old Canadian steam locomotive in Canada, the oldest in fact! PDC #3 built in 1882, the oldest working steam locomotive in Canada.
It was working for a local railroad (Greater Winnipeg Water District) before being donated, so it would be pretty hard for them to "take" it. I've heard we are getting two more former CP steam locomotives from the US!
Taylorover9001 makes sense, also i despise how many canadian locomotives are there, there is one class of cp locomotives and i think all the preserved ones are in the united states! someday i should start a non profit organization and take back our history!
heres just a wild idea: they should rebuild the locomotive, or do the same for 4501, the polar express with the whisle, and should find cars similar the the train in the movie, and then make it an express service only on Christmas,(the loco can still be used as it was before), it would bring hundreds of rail fans to ride the train. comment what u think

I love the sound of vintage trains in the morning
out of all of steamtown's engine's i think 2317 sounds the best. the whistle, the bell, and everything else just sounds amazing
You can always count on Canadian Pacific for beautiful steam locomotives.

yeah ok💀
Hope to see her steam up soon in the future! Awesome video Adam.
Beautiful engine! I want to get to steamtown, but do want to wait until they have at least one other steam engine running.
ill miss that steamer we rode with it on excursions during railcamp went in cab i got so many memories of that steamer
Wait a damn minute isn’t the F1A jubilee there stored at steamtown somewhere in the yards
Saw on the Steamtown website that 2317 may return to operation after B&M 3713 is finished.
If i ever won the lottery id finance the rebuild of this locomotive myself. It was the best part of my childhood i miss it so much
What I'd like to see restored is a Union Pacific with Vanderbilt tender now that would be awesome
Union Pacific 618 is a 2-8-0 with a Vanderbilt tender, and it's undergoing her 1472-day rebuild at the Heber Valley Railroad out of Heber City, UT
Excellent video Adam, I better do Railfest this year.
Excellent!!!
3 more years left.🙏
They don't have plans to rerun 2317, but 3713 is going to be a replacement for her and 3254.
3377 may get a restoration after 3713 is done (if it ever is), according to a comment on a video which I can't remember the name of.
@LocoCyc remember 26 was taken out of service in 2000 so 2317 had to "pinch hit" the 0-6-0. Keeping in mind 2317 doesnt do the Moscow trips anymore because their steamer is 3254. 15 YEAR RESTORATION?!?!? I CANT WAIT THAT LONG!!!!! 😭😭😭😭
It's not a 15 year restoration. It's 15 years or 1472 days that the engine is allowed to run before its boiler permit expires.
Of course, with Steamtown, it might take 15 years. They've been working on B&M 3713 for 22 years now.
K9Nick811 it’s seriously been that long?
@@MPT_Productions yes.

@CSX6000 Ive wonder if these Canadian Steam at Steamtown well return to Canada!?

Awesome! Was this during the convention last week?
is there a site that you can go to see about submitting funds to aid in the effort!

Its been 7 years did they stop looking at this one when 3713 came in play
I believe that after 3713 is restored that Steamtown will turn their attention to 2317.
@parrthd1 Actually, she'll be back by 2014 or 2015.

Was the engine scrapped after that?
Engine is on display inside the roundhouse.
@TNtrainboy15 Yes, Friday of the event.
R.I.P CP 2317 (1923-2010)

Awesome
@PereMarquette1223 Yeah Here Ontario, Hardly no mainline excurtion steam train, well there one in toronto, but i heard they are no current plan to restored, well not yet but soon.
@boberttrain831 Yeah, after 26 and 3713 are finished.
@itm426 587 last operated in 02. that cant be a 15 year rebuild if she returns in 2011
the the good news is that she will be runin agian one more time for rail fest in septerber on the 4 and 5
I will be up there this weekend. I will let u know if i find anything out about it.
so in 15 years she`ll be back?
Does anyone know what kind of whistle 2317 has?

BTW, they DONT have plans to restore 3254?
Do they still use this steam engine at Steamtown
No
Why do they baby 2317 it can pull more than that or is there a reason?
SnakyFace Gaming it’s the yard shuttle. It’s usually 2 cars.
actually they will have 6. The 6th is Long Island 4-6-0 # 39
Very nice.......
15 years to to replace the boiler?! Our Prairie Dog Central 4-4-0 only took 5 years.
No the boiler time expires every 15 years, then it take about 3-5 years to replace or fix, maybe more if there are other steam locomotives waiting to be restored ahead of the 2317.
Well, it says 15 year rebuild in the description.
yes that means it has been 15 years scince it was last rebuilt and needs to be rebuilt again.

@0812201 hopefully any chapters of nrhs can donate 900k for 3713s rebuild so 2317 can go in for her overhaul

15 years? Damn. Why aren't Strasburg locomotives ever out of commission for that long?

15 years means that every 15 years, the boiler has to be inspected/repaired(FRA regulations). Not that the rebuild takes 15 years. Although, with the low funding of steamtown, it may actually take 15 years.
Hotdawgfilms Yeah Steamtown seems to perpetually be out of money.
Well #7312 is already taking 8 years and counting to be rebuilt.
Strasburg says they are keeping 7312 out of service for as long as possible. They don't like running it and it tears up the rails.
Nice.
Canadian Pacific runs to scranton so 2317 is at home.
It isn't steam town, it's diesel town

Why don't they just rename it Railtown USA as to appease both.
