Good on Keith Creel for bringing this amazing locomotive back under steam and sending it on such an ambitious tour. I can only hope that this tour is a success and the 2816 may be able to visit other parts of the Canadian Pacific system
And nearly 5 years later, Keith announced that 2816 will be running a special run from Calgary to Mexico City to celebrate the merger between KCS and CP!
That is one beautiful locomotive. Look how she enjoys her new lease of life, stretching her legs on the tracks of old. Diesels are making the money CP, but 2816 is what all railways are about. It is what little boys dreamed of. There's a business in that. UP led the way. Now it's your turn.

I actually think 2816 looks better than the streamlined "Royal Hudson's" She still has the elegant & colourful CP passenger scheme. Her sisters are beautiful in their own right, but I love me a steam engine that balances looks and practicality.

What a shame that the bottomline always rules especially for such a spectacular Canadian icon. In 1988 as a Dutch Australian travelling in North America in a VW campervan I was sleeping under the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver and saw the 2816 go by. She is certainly a beautiful locomotive with a gorgeous colour scheme. In addition to the absolutely awesome scenery that she travels through I am amazed (especially after seeing what UP is doing with their steam program) that this beautiful steam engine is not in active service helping to promote the great outdoors of Canada, such a beautiful country. May the powers that be read this message and get the Canadian Steam Program up and running again asap.

You want a well running railroad again? Get back to running the railroad, call laid off people back to work, start running freight trains not by how long you can run them but running them short enough to run on time and and on schedule. Harrisons way is running freights from coast to coast not caring about and eliminating local freights and yard jobs saying they were saving money. I used to think investors were good for a railroad but after seeing what H Harrison cares about is money only money. News flash! You can't run freight from one end of a railroad for a thousand miles or more and expect to make money because your need the branches and their customers. Look at what's happening to the CSX system the small shippers and receivers are your customers too and your trying to operate as if they don't exist. That in time will turn around and byte you hard where you sit. Bring back the CP we all knew and loved. How much profit do you really need? all the freight customers that built this railroad not just the investors who all they care about is the almighty dollar and how much profit they can wring out of the railroad. The investors don't give a damn about the little guy who has been for years working and keeping the railroad. Running in shape to move the freight and passengers safe and comfortable.

With how fast the CPR management folded during the latest strike, we can only hope that the ghost of Harrison is loosing his influence! Keith, protege of the late E. Hunter Harrison, time to hire an exorcist and bid farewell to the remaining hauntings over at the Royal Canadian Pacific Pavilion, and get a crew together to get 2816 back on the rails! Perhaps you may get her ready in time for Canada's 151st birthday!
its a sad thing i would love to see her back on the rails again i got a free ride through the kicking horse cannon back atleast 4-5 years agao loved chasing her through bc
Hunter Harrison killed the majority of the small industry in my county by taking away rail services (easy to say the lines aren't profitable when the railroad is refusing to service customers). Then making it impossible for short line operators to afford to purchase or lease the rails being abandoned. Putting hard working people out of work so his stock will go up, I hope he's frying ice in hell.
Moparmadman69 - Well, it’s been a couple years since Hunter croaked, and CSX had to scale back some of his plans. Turns out you can’t just fire everyone and expect a railroad to run properly. Who knew. The delays his “precision railroading” caused were so bad the US government started to worry it was going to damage the national economy. A lot of shippers were forced to pay top dollar for truckers because the rail cars weren’t moving.
The good part of it all, is that the loco belongs to Canadian Pacific and not some railroad museum. And, as such, she is treated as anartifact and carefully store indoors at theCPR headquarters in Calgary. Some day, she may return to the rails; the CPR empire now extends to Mexico. BUT It’s doubtful that she will again be used on excursion service; the insurance rates are too prohibitive. Personally, I am lookng forward to her return some day and looking forward to it as a Calgarian. One never knows. It all depends upon the occasion. Consider here that, while she is on the rails, she is eating CPR money, which could be earned by a mile-long freight train, which could be occupying the rails where she would be running at the time. In so many words, if she runs again, it will have to be an extremely special CPR commemorative occasion. With selected passengers; mostly brass collars.
Hey Keith! Awesome job with the heritage painted units! Glad to see CP hop on the bandwagon! Hunter is probably spinning in his grave seeing you guys spend the shareholders profits on such a frivolous venture! So, um, where’s the 2816?
Hey Keith, what’s going on with the 2816? I see you guys are scrapping some old heavy weights in Coquitlam, for parts for the heritage program. Where is the 2816?
As someone who observed and photographed the steam locomotives of the New York Central when they were in regular service, I would give that "honor" to Al Perlman, the president of the NYC from about 1954. He sent every one of the NYC's 275 Hudson engines and 27 Niagara engines to the torch.
Hippy(Bboomer) The shareholders might have liked Harrison, but many of the employees and customers did not. Trains magazine gave his legacy mixed reviews. While he was good at cost cutting and maximizing profits, he was not seen as a visionary who could grow the company.
@@Toledo1940 this to this day just kills me. Hudson’s, Mohawks, F-12’s, Niagara’s, H class mikes, K class Pacifics, everything torched with little to show for their legacy. It’s why I make such a strong effort to collect and video or photograph my NYC models to at least try keeping its legacy alive.
So i notice this Hudson 2816 has an interesting upper and lower crosshead design, but the Royal Hudson 2860 (Famous Vancouver excursion train) has the standard upper rail only design. Extrapolating, the magnificent Selkirk class, sorta the big brother of the Hudsons, has the standard one rail crosshead design, I'd a thought that beefy 2 rail design would've been incorporated into the Selkirks?! Can anyone shed some light on this?
The valve gear trim adjustment to allow more or less steam through to the cylinders. Also, this will move all the way one direction for the reverse yoke to put the engine in reverse. I’m not a steam “engineer” but I believe this to be an accurate description.
Kevin Kostyshin why doesn't Canadian pacific give 2816 to the Strasburg railroad to be operated until Canadian Pacific steam program gets up & running again
Hey Keith! Take a page out of the UP’s playbook! They will soon have the big boy no doubt pulling a modern freight just because it can! Like the challenger did! Wouldn’t it be nice to see a museum Selkirk fired up pulling a long train along the prairies because it can? In the mountains would be asking too much. Modern diesels do that job well without adding power. Plus, wouldn’t want to disrupt CP’s timetable too much. The Selkirk sitting in the museum that lent out its whistle to 2816 was practically new when retired. Get 2816 on the road! ruclips.net/video/7g3-q2lhQas/видео.html
3985 was pulling trains because they were power short. Creepy Keith is as bad if not worst the EHH when it comes to steam. Plus 2816 need a new boiler and 3 mill in rebuilds
Canadian Pacific Railway Steam Locomotive #2816 during her days before 'you know who' was in charge. Included are various clips from different tours around the lower mainland BC Canada, and fraser valley. Keith, it is up to you now to do the right thing and get this beautiful piece of engineering back to work! No excuses! Canada 150? You should be ashamed of yourself! Can't get anyone to work on her? I smell something different! Take a page out of the UP's book, and learn a thing or two! And while you are at it, how about a generous corporate donation to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish - home of the famed Royal Hudson 2860 - to get her back on the rails again! Now with the BC Liberals out, the ones who shut her down in the first place, it may just work! Just think of the exposure Double Header excursions would do to help your shareholders! You will never get rich from ticket sales, but the CPR could set a good business example!
OK I live near the waterfront station but I never spotted this steam train near it and it carries the cars of the westcoast express can someone tell me whats going on????
Greg Tiderington, that footage was filmed many years ago. The west coast express cars event was a charity run to help break the engine in after her rebuild. All through the early to late 2000's, the cpr used this engine as a roving ambassador along its lines across Canada and the United States. Thanks to Hunter Harrison, it was sidelined indefinitely and sits in Calgary as a museum piece. Since hunter moved on to destroy CSX, his prodigy Kieth Kreel has done nothing to revive the CPR steam program. Now that Harrison is dead, perhaps the puppet strings that he still had over the Cpr after his departure have been severed, and the 2816 can once again roam the rails. Keith Creel, show us your severed strings!!!
This was a secondary whistle added that was borrowed from a Sellkirk locomotive at a museum in Ontario. It is an air activated Super heated steam whistle that cannot be “played” like the original one that is located close to the cab. Apparently the one close to the cab was too loud for the crew. That’s the rumor I heard. Plus, the super heated steam whistle is a lot louder for crossing warnings.
Bonnie SFM No, it's sitting like a museum piece at Calgary's headquarters. E hunter Harrison was and is renowned for not liking steam locomotives. He put the steam program at the CPR on hiatus while he was in charge. It is up to us to get this message out, and pressure the new leader Keith Creel to re-activate the steam program at the CPR. Please share this video with as many people as you can! Thanks.
I encourage everyone who watches this video to contact CP with their concerns about this at the following website: www.cpr.ca/en/contact-us/general-contact-form
So, watching the big boy videos, and reading the comments. A common comment would come up often: “never in my lifetime would I ever think to see a big boy running the rails once again!” I tip my hat to the hard working steam crew of the Union Pacific. So, I say this with great sadness, never in my lifetime would I ever see a Selkirk locomotive running. Too young to have ever seen them before, and sadly, probably would never see one run at all. Keith, do you hear the subtle point I am trying to make? Well, do ya? Where’s the 2816? Oh, here she is: m.ruclips.net/video/fWcJJDmRduc/видео.html I would hope in the rest of my lifetime, I would see the 2816 run again! Oops, meant to say, I don’t think I will ever see her run again.........
Texas and Pacific, under lock and key at the CP head office in Calgary Alberta. Been sitting there idle, under cover thankfully, since Harrison was in charge. Since Hunter’s departure and movement to CSX, Keith has done nothing to get her going again. Now that Harrison has been dead for a while, was hoping the curse would be lifted.
CPR Works / Trainzsp4449 No, these were taken shortly after her restoration and tours in the early 2000's. When Hunter Harrison became leader of the CPR, the steam program was shelved indefinitely. Now it's up to Keith Creel to resurrect the steam program to its former glory!!! I urge you to share this video and write to the CPR and send links of this video to the CPR and Keith Creel.
Hmm yes I read about how a railroad magazine felt about what he did to csx with all the cost cutting, in summery you can only cut soo much money and people before you shoot yourself in the foot, and shops that are closed you loose the skills to do the specific work when it is needed during times when business picks back up, and second your customer service suffers, and once something is taken down its harder then heck to rebuild it should it be needed put back in such as double tracking or facilities, the regulations are ridiculous, its often cheaper to maintain and sustain then it is to put new up, same is true with customers, keeping old ones is easier and cheaper then trying to attract new to a business, and takes way more effort.
It is. The CPR is producing a movie for a holiday special, I mean Christmas Special, that will be streamed live. They are doing this because the Christmas train was canceled this year because of Covid.
Riley Sanesh, 2 reasons why she has 2 whistles currently: 1. When the overpaid whiny cpr executives rode in the cab, the original placement whistle close to the cab (which itself is not original, was changed in Steamtown) was too loud for delicate ears. Somehow I find it hard to believe the crew actually operating the locomotive would whine, but hey, the generations of men today are not as tough as generations past. Plus, we have decibels aloud in the workplace rules and such nowadays - too many rules. 2. The too loud for the “cab crew” whistle was ironically not loud enough to meet standards for decibel warning levels for rail crossings and such. Plus, that whistle is operated by an on/off air actuated lever or button that was used on the more later cpr steam locomotives. Wouldn’t want that engineer’s arm to get tired pulling that cord all day! In fact, that whistle, mounted up front and using high pressure steam unlike the other whistle, was “borrowed” from the late 40’s built Selkirk at the museum in Quebec Canada.
This is my petition. The more views and comments, the more Keith will have to realize how important it is to celebrate the heritage of our country with some class.
@@dmbpify OK i don't know if a railway CEO would have time to watch 2816 videos on you tube but if you can go to Calgary and show this video to some one who knows Keith and can pass it down to him it could work however i highly recommend you make a petition reason being if you just tell Keith to look at the video's comment section he might not have the time to look at the entire thing and would just brush it off but if you present to him with a petition including the video he might look at the petition first then he can look at the video comment section and their may be an 80% chance he might approve this thanks to how professional it looks. it has been a few years since 2816 stopped running and now is the time to make change so what are you waiting for.
freedom loving loyalist, the video link has been emailed to countless departments at CPR headquarters and to its website contact form. I would be willing to bet that Keith has seen it or has been ribbed around the office as a roving joke for some time that a “foamer” won’t leave him alone. I believe Hunter was Keith’s father in law, so that could explain the delay in his actions to really get the steam program up and running, as he seems to care a little about 2816 being seen in photographs with it and a painting of it in his office. But, i’m afraid the real reason nothing has come of it is of the morale of the former steam program employees being shot down by Hunter, and any willingness to get anything going again just wouldn’t be in the employees interest. And, they have probably moved on with other directions in their careers. If anything, a formal apology by Keith to the employees of the CPR of hunters actions might be enough to lift morale back again. Keith has been quoted as wanting to put CP back on the right track.
ottovonmaybach, it is sitting in Calgary on static display at CPR's head office. I don't think it is available for public viewing, but I could be wrong. Shame on the CPR!!!

Lets not forget Diesels saved the Railways. If they hadn't come along and we were stuck with the inefficient Steam engines Railways would most likely have been history many years ago! Could never understand why some rail fans bash Diesels. You don't hear Aviation fans calling down Jets and saying that the prop driven planes were better. It's very childish!

Perhaps you may get her ready in time for Canada's 151st birthday!
its a sad thing i would love to see her back on the rails again i got a free ride through the kicking horse cannon back atleast 4-5 years agao loved chasing her through bc
Anthony Smith damn you’re some kinda of special “ with a capital R “
Hunter Harrison killed the majority of the small industry in my county by taking away rail services (easy to say the lines aren't profitable when the railroad is refusing to service customers). Then making it impossible for short line operators to afford to purchase or lease the rails being abandoned. Putting hard working people out of work so his stock will go up, I hope he's frying ice in hell.
(lol)
Moparmadman69 - Well, it’s been a couple years since Hunter croaked, and CSX had to scale back some of his plans. Turns out you can’t just fire everyone and expect a railroad to run properly. Who knew. The delays his “precision railroading” caused were so bad the US government started to worry it was going to damage the national economy. A lot of shippers were forced to pay top dollar for truckers because the rail cars weren’t moving.
Richard Anderson's worse
The good part of it all, is that the loco belongs to Canadian Pacific and not some railroad museum.
And, as such, she is treated as anartifact and carefully store indoors at theCPR headquarters in Calgary.
Some day, she may return to the rails; the CPR empire now extends to Mexico.
BUT
It’s doubtful that she will again be used on excursion service; the insurance rates are too prohibitive.
I hope he considers it soon.
She's in storage
Yes, we know. He keeps writing these comments so someone brings back 2816.
@@davidng2336 yeah hopefully the empress will steam once again and it will indeed happen
EvanF1293 I only give you a thumbs down because of the fact that she’s in storage!
Hey Keith, what’s going on with the 2816? I see you guys are scrapping some old heavy weights in Coquitlam, for parts for the heritage program. Where is the 2816?
Well, folks, our wish came true!
Hunter Harrison: The most despicable person ever to inhabit this planet.
What about Hitler?
What is the silver wheel in front of the engineer 🤔
The valve gear trim adjustment to allow more or less steam through to the cylinders. Also, this will move all the way one direction for the reverse yoke to put the engine in reverse. I’m not a steam “engineer” but I believe this to be an accurate description.
Ding dong the wicked old witch is dead!
Kevin Kostyshin why doesn't Canadian pacific give 2816 to the Strasburg railroad to be operated until Canadian Pacific steam program gets up & running again
I don't know. It would be nice to see her running again
@@jmream2618 why the Strasburg? She is better on the mainline and owned by a company that runs her on home country then a tourist railroad
2816 Productions Strasburg is not just a tourist /Freight railroad they also run freight 4 Norfolk Southern to deliver
@@jmream2618 I know but I think 2816 deserves to stay home in Canada
They just got her blowing his whistle first time in almost 60 years 4014 sends chill up my spine listening to him waking up
3985 was pulling trains because they were power short. Creepy Keith is as bad if not worst the EHH when it comes to steam. Plus 2816 need a new boiler and 3 mill in rebuilds
Unfortunately 3985 was retired by the UP in January 2020.
You will never get rich from ticket sales, but the CPR could set a good business example!
hope 2816 will get to steam again one day
EvanF1293, we all can only wish....
That wish has come true
Keith Creel, show us your severed strings!!!
and that means that 614 could run again too
What kind of whistle is that right next to the smoke box
This was a secondary whistle added that was borrowed from a Sellkirk locomotive at a museum in Ontario.
It is an air activated Super heated steam whistle that cannot be “played” like the original one that is located close to the cab. Apparently the one close to the cab was too loud for the crew. That’s the rumor I heard. Plus, the super heated steam whistle is a lot louder for crossing warnings.
Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 Locomotive 2816
5:05 [train air whistle]
6:17 [train chugging] 12:24 [train chugging]
It's a 4-6-4.
It does have an automatic lubricator, right?
HARRISON WHY YOU DO THIS TO A PRICE OF HISTORY!!!!! AND EVEN YOU TOO CANADIAN PACIFIC RAIL!!!
Bonnie SFM Because he's an idiot only concerned about the shareholder's bottom line!
Harrison sucks
Kevin Kostyshin if this was still in service I imagine it running side by side with up 844
Awesome
Is it still in service?
Bonnie SFM No, it's sitting like a museum piece at Calgary's headquarters. E hunter Harrison was and is renowned for not liking steam locomotives. He put the steam program at the CPR on hiatus while he was in charge. It is up to us to get this message out, and pressure the new leader Keith Creel to re-activate the steam program at the CPR. Please share this video with as many people as you can! Thanks.
I feel like crying and how sad that is
I encourage everyone who watches this video to contact CP with their concerns about this at the following website:
www.cpr.ca/en/contact-us/general-contact-form
So, watching the big boy videos, and reading the comments. A common comment would come up often: “never in my lifetime would I ever think to see a big boy running the rails once again!” I tip my hat to the hard working steam crew of the Union Pacific.
So, I say this with great sadness, never in my lifetime would I ever see a Selkirk locomotive running. Too young to have ever seen them before, and sadly, probably would never see one run at all.
Keith, do you hear the subtle point I am trying to make? Well, do ya?
Where’s the 2816?
Oh, here she is:
m.ruclips.net/video/fWcJJDmRduc/видео.html
I would hope in the rest of my lifetime, I would see the 2816 run again! Oops, meant to say, I don’t think I will ever see her run again.........
I say the same for UP 3985. Ed Dickens, the manager of the UP Steam Program, has stated that there will never be another operating Challenger.
@@davidng2336 milk aged comment
@@voidjavelin23 yes because now we know 3985 is under restoration at the RRHMA and 2816 is running again.
Is it going to run again
Jimmy Bowers, I have no clue. You would have to ask Keith Creel, cpr leader. Only he knows the answer to this...
I take it the diesel locos are doing most the work?
Where was that at 516
Where was that at 5:16
Lake Errok
So where is she now?
Texas and Pacific, under lock and key at the CP head office in Calgary Alberta. Been sitting there idle, under cover thankfully, since Harrison was in charge. Since Hunter’s departure and movement to CSX, Keith has done nothing to get her going again. Now that Harrison has been dead for a while, was hoping the curse would be lifted.
Same
Are these clips of 2816 in 2017?
Well, the US government is "encouraging" to scale back, if not abandon PSR, due to a certain derailment in Ohio on NS...
Wait, I heard 2816 is running agian.
It is. The CPR is producing a movie for a holiday special, I mean Christmas Special, that will be streamed live. They are doing this because the Christmas train was canceled this year because of Covid.
@The Life of Jason, no idea. If no Covid next year, and Keith is in a good mood, perhaps we’ll see it next Christmas
The Union Pacific is just now implementing Hunter Harrison shitty principals...
2816 is missing parts where’s the rest of its steps on the front
Why did cpr 2816 have 2 whistles since 2005 till 2011
1. 6 chime
2. 5 chime
Why did 2816 have 2 whistles in 2004 to 2011
Riley Sanesh, 2 reasons why she has 2 whistles currently:
Kevin Kostyshin I know what that means why did 2816 have 2 whistles they put the other whistle on so they can check and see how it works
I like her whistle close to the cab. That’s what makes her sound like an Empress.
She have 6 chime and 5 chime
You know for a fact that steam locomotive loving employees and fans of CPR steam were throwing fuck tons of parties.
have you did a petition kevin
