I had 6 Kia 19 engines. Great fuel economy and torque. 50000 hour engines that were all gear drive. The new style k series has steel pistons as the original one were aluminum with an insert for the ring packs. The aluminum one were prone to scuffing if the engines were not up to operating temperature and put under load. Probably the best engine that Cummins marketed. Pricing of parts in Canada was outrageous and hard to get, I bought my parts in Montana with ready available parts and prices around 60 percent of Canada.
@@andrewbarnard3229 of course load dependent but with a reasonable load they used 35-45 litres per hour as compared to an 8v92ta Detroit that would use 50-60 litre per hour.
They don't make diesel engines like they used to back in the Good old days when truck diesel engines was real diesel engines would run over a million miles and still keep on running
It was heavy. Came in around 3300 lbs, early blocks where bad for cracking in the counter bores, old leaks in the front cover intermediate plates where a nightmare. Very expensive to rebuild. All the cap screws where twelve point, that allowed them to make the engine 4 inches shorter. However that made every bolt a Cummins part. $$$. Fuel system being based on Cummins PT pump ( mechanical pressure time ) couldn’t hold a candle to Detroit’s DDEC.
It has 2 cooling circuit which meet at the heat exchanger, first coolant circulates through engine block and heat exch, second is fresh water circulates through heat exch.
Early models used Air Research turbos. Holset came to Cummins in the early 80’s. Was a big improvement, but by then KT’s were no longer popular in trucks, as lighter weight engines that produce 400 - 500hp and get better fuel mileage where on the scene. They where popular with oil companies that had fleets operating in jurisdictions that allowed for higher gross weights. If your limited to 73,280 gross, or 80,000, having an engine that weighed 3,300 lbs was self defeating. You had to make bank to pay for the rebuild. It cost a lot to impress your CB pals.

Designed by Komatsu - hence the "K" and retrofitted with the Cummins P/T fuel system, the KTA was 1150 cubic inches and intended for stationary or marine application. Peterbilt would install them in a new truck back in the 80s but all warranties were thus nil and void - period, you were on your own. In automotive applications they suffered from liner problems and were an expensive toy comparable to the 3408 Cat or 12V71 Detroit. My boss had a KTA in a long nose W900 KW that was pushing around 900HP, it was claimed. I remember she later said that a fan hub assembly was around $7500.00 ( By then the mid 90s ) and I think Cummins was trying to force used KTA out of the market place by then with exorbitant replacement part costs. Detroit Diesel made a similar move with the "Natural 92" or naturally aspirated 8V92 which had notorious problems. That KTA that my boss had would really go and she had fairly decent luck with it. I haven't even see a KTA in over a decade and a half now, glad to see one still alive and kicking!

Nelbro ?
Define fuel economy please? How many gallons per hour would an engine like this burn at what rpm?

Wonder if I can get that CARB certified for my Volvo?
There is a successor to this engine which is designed in mind with emissions management, QSK19. You could try getting that one certified instead.
