  • Before the days of cell phones and digital cameras we used cameras that required film that needed to be developed by a photo lab.
This is a quick video explaining that and showing some flash bulbs that were used about 70 years ago which were like little bombs inside a glass tube. When voltage was applied the fine strands of Magnesium would instantly burn up and create a flash needed to burn an image on the film.
They were big, bulky, dangerous and only good for one photo.
We purchased the bulbs to use as props in period pieces that date back to and use that style of cameras.
We have come a long way in 100 years from lighting gun powder on an open tray to a pocket size camera that takes seemingly unlimited pictures stored on a hard drive instantly.
We wanted to share a little of that history with today's young film makers so they can understand e of the still used terms in the industry and where they came from.
It took a load of R&D to get from exploding flash bulbs and hand cranked movie cameras to today's 8k and 12k digital cinema cameras.

I never knew photos were a one time go with those lightbulbs. That's a cool history lesson! Where did you say I could buy these again? You know, for "science?"

I don't think you can other than on ebay or etsy. I saw one on etsy for $14 which is really expensive for "Science".
