How long can you hold your breath? Surfer takes six waves on the head - Nazare

- This wasn't any ordinary day in Nazare, this was one of the bigger swells of the season. After setting off on the wave, Toby Cunningham was unable to clear the tail end of this massive 50-60 foot monster. With nearly 25 years of big wave surfing experience, Toby knows that keeping a cool head is the most important thing in a situation like this. With his ears still ringing after taking 6 set waves on the head, Toby stated "I knew that I was just along for the ride ... it was actually a lot of fun getting my a** kicked"!

How can he float with balls that heavy
Saucy Lobster bahaha!! Best question ever! 🤣
thats the reason theyve got to be towed in :D cant accelerate the weight of those massive balls to the speed of these waves :D
They help him float
with a life jacket
That's why canisters vest were invented...
In situations like this, u r just a passenger: calm yourself, relax, hold your breath and don't fight cause the ocean is now in charge.
One thing is 4 sure: that monstrous life vest that they wear is extremely necessary in these kind of waves, no way any human can fight their way to the surface, one time after another, in those heavy conditions.
"She"
Fact!
100% right!
Adam Green are you really assuming the oceans gender
The ocean is a she, you need to hang with more pirates.
cool as a cucumber, only thing on his mind is....where the hell is my board, I need to get back on it
Haha. Yeah. When I first filmed Nazaré, I thought big wave surfers are tethered to their boards.
I was wondering if they ever get their boards back!
When I fall the first thing I worry about is my board, i paid for that shit
Been on a few trips through the "washing machine" myself on much smaller waves, maybe 4 meters. I remember once getting caught inside, jumped off my board, swam to bottom and tried to cling to the sand like a limpet, got peeled off and rag-dolled around. So much sand in the water that it's pitch black, no way to know which way is up. Eardrums shoved in so deep that it felt like they were hitting my brain. Wow, what fun! You won't catch me out at Nazare. It scares me just to watch.
ttcherrick i started surfing first time in my life a few weeks ago. when i fell into my first larger 2m wave I was struck by the pressure and power. Thats where I kinda woke up and realized this is actually bloody dangerous, ...but super fun too. Whooo!
Biggest I ever surfed was 6-8 footers before and after hurricanes or noreasters in Va Beach VA. Any other time the surf there sucked but I remember that feeling you described where you can't see and don't know up from down. There's a few times I started swimming thinking I was heading for the surface only to smash into the sand. Then you finally hit the surface and get bashed again. Scary shit but I do miss it. Now I live vicariously through youtube surf videos lol.
honestly man
Also: love the long look back at the ocean at the end by Cunningham. Can't tell if he's saying "F*** you, Ocean, for trying to kill me!" or "Thank you, Ocean, for not killing me!" I realize it was also a quick glass for his board before he thought, "no way I'll see that thing before it washes up!"
ttcherrick haha a little of both I’m sure, all stoke at the end!
or looking to jet skis and giving universal in water sign for OK.
@@danturner3856 You're right, it's also a "thank you" to the PWC's, though it looks like he can't pick them out of all that monstrous foam.
Tahnks ocean for not killing me ? Mf , he was helped to get out of the waves
this gives me anxiety just imagining how much power those waves must have, surfing it is no joke at all. remembering my worst wipeouts with waves much much smaller than this and nahhh i'd never surf that
These waves are absolutely mesmerizing... It amazes me the power in each set. Interesting how this spot only recently has been made popular to the average person. Great videos friend.
It's not popular to the "average person." These guys train seriously for Nazare. Was surfed for years by locals, but not at this size; much smaller. Only the advent of water craft and flotation vests has enabled the next level to emerge.
@@jamesbadham228 I am not calling the surfers who surf this spot average. I am saying the average person now knows Nazare exists. What this guys is doing is far from average.
@@401sFinest even though James misunderstood what you meant, the answer is still right, people only surfed this size at Nazare when surfers and life vests got better at their jobs
@@Temax6 yea for sure. I think Shane Dorian come up with the CO2 cartridges in the vest and its been all improvements from there.
Breathtaking footage. Luckily he had time to breath in between the six waves
are these good waves to learn on? thanks :)))
Definitely! Tell us all how it turns out.
Yeah me and my gran found these ok... a little on the small side though
Asking for a friend?
the alleys he cant he died
Of course just remember to take a bit bigger board like 7' to 8' and maybe try first with the Australian popup.
Crazy. Even the last wave to hit him on the shore looked brutal. Epic vid.
Toby is such a badass. So cool to see how he handled that situation and thanks @jacuzzisurfer for filming it. Great job 👍🏻
How did he handle it besides floating there until he got picked in and taken to shore?
Thank god for the vests, and training, and jetski opps, and drone assist!
Love the "Jetski - Drone" team.
First they encourage a surfer to go there and get his ass kicked, and then work together to rescue him.
Great drone footage and piloting skills, thought it was almost lost at the start.
I like all of your videos Stevie, keep'em coming brother!!!
Bruce516 yew thanks Bruce! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I can't even take six beers to the head.
Hahahaha!
Haha!!!
Stay_at_home_Dad_here....you do realize that's not what beers are for don't you ??
@@cspace1234nz you got lost in translation.
@@xZOOMORPHICx ....yeah, no I didn't acually.
I like how even tho its been a few waves he moves his arms in a playfull way so the rescuers know he is alright and dont push the risk
Not sure he was playing those movements mean something.
@@ocvegasproperty thats exatly what i said lol, “to let them know that he is alright” it means “i am alright” lol did you only read playfull?
Insane footage!!! Very cool...
B Smith yew!!! 😎
I’d be dead.
Been caught in much smaller wave sets and it can get exhausting. Must seem like enternities between these sets and looking for the ski. Way to stay alive!
😱🤯 good skills with the drones, gives a better insight to what a surfer goes through. He pops up faster than I thought. 🤮been held down before it’s scary stuff when you don’t know what way is up a few seconds after you’re past your breath allowance
Pat D he was pulled all over by the current! I can’t imagine how that felt! So gnarly!
Please don't comment "He has very heavy balls. How can he even float?" That comment is f*cking boring!
Legend. You bloody legend.
Swings his arms in the air in absolute joy without one single effin' care thinkin' he discovered the greatest most amazing jacuzzi in the whole damn world... THAT is tough.. lol
TOBY is a madman
Holy crap! Nazare canyon!
Nothing short of epic
He is as lucky as he is brave. Scary footage
This drone pilot is awesome!
Dusty Montgomery hey thanks Dusty!
not as Wavey as my last acid trip
GLEVUM REX 🤪
What happens with the board during these situations? The board seemed to follow him. It was seemingly tombstoning on its own, near end of vid. I doubt there is a leash on the thing. He gets on the ski and leaves the board behind.
Impresionante quien dijo que en el infierno solo hay llamas .Enhorabuena a este surfista a desafiado al oceano y ha salido victorioso .Bravo
Fuckin awesome. Great video!!!!
Most important, dude is safe.
He’s chilling 🤣
Unreal
15 seconds of fun 🤗 & 4 minutes of almost drowning. 😨 🤕
That is terrifying
Definitely a lil intense but 6 to the head?!
Savage! Most people would have been dead by the 3rd wave or of even sooner. These guys are so good at Harnessing stress.
Yea I know I would have! All that training experience was put to the test that day! 🤯
Lalo Hernandez I died twice just watching the first wave!
I used to think I could easily outlast waves cause of how long I could tread water and hold my breath in a pool, till I swam in the ocean and realized how quick the currents tire you out, man I barely made it back to shore thought I was going to drown from exhaustion and the waves kept pulling me under
That was amazing
That’s way too gnarly
Have the drone hover over the person until he’s found
Craziest rip current ever. Faster than most rivers.
I got worked being caught inside on a 6ft. North swell here in Florida. So I don't think surfing Nazare' is really something I'm ready for.
Great video as usual!
Jerwin Pasco yew thanks Jerwin!
Holy Cow!
Champ!!!!
3:20 that last sweep is the best and worst
Yes, People! The best is relax right away - for a minite feel like you in your mother sleeping back again. Keeps energy, bones and saves your life.
O trabalho dos pilotos de jet ski é heróico.
ever any 2 wave holdowns ?
OMG six waves!I can"t believe!
Lidia Szlapa I know! So crazy!
Staying calm is key for sure!
pickle fork N wiggles for sure! I lost track of him and started worrying a little 😳 then saw him laughing his ass off and felt MUCH better! Toby is a pretty funny guy!
Question: if the drone pilot can see him, why not fly over the jet ski and lead him to the surfer?
He is lucky to be alive. Hope he decides one day soon, this thrill ride isn’t worth your life... once you have kids, your death wish fades... gl and keep on surfing gnar.
by the time the jetski got to him he was practically back on the beach
Big lungs! Dabs up!
The first Jet ski should have picked that guy. The jet ski wasn't timing correct no risk taking. The jetskis if they miss pickup should rush to the shoulder and swing in for fast pickup.
Is there a 'safe' or 'safer' position to have your arms and legs, when in the washing machine of the white wash? I imagine cover your head, but anything else?
hah...lookin for his board at the end.
hes dipping.
is this the real audio? because wouldnt you just hear the drone noise?
Is it just me or did it look like the jet ski could have nabbed him the first time but didn't get close enough.
What type of hair product is he using? because zooming in on the still looks like he still has the hair working.
Haha!
Awesome drone footage, but how did he keep under with that buoyancy aid on, maybe his balls of steel weighed him down 😂🤙🏽
Ten footers smash me! Trick is to go for depth as you have this this thunder over you.
Love getting stuck in the impact zone
1:53 is that a shark??? 😱😱😱
Thankfully he had some full canisters
Was he a beginner surfer...:).!
Did he just catch the first wave 😨
No fear surfing..
Anybody noticed the fin poping out at 2:13? Thay freaked me out
Even his surf board is having a hard time surfacing through all that foam. (It's not a shark)
That’s what I guessed was that it was his board. It’s amazing how he managed to dislodge it from his rectum so quickly!😳
@@certaindiaster59 wtf lmfao
🙂👍🏻
That's f n crazy..
@ChakRaLight freakishly neurotic
Damn
the massage cant get any tougher unless you enjoy being rolled over by a tank
What did surfers do before those rescue machine things. ?
They didn't surf the enormous mountains of water that they do now! Before jetski rescue they would never dream of paddling out in such huge waves!
@@jamessantry5981 I saw a video the other day where Laird Hamilton said they can't paddle out that far, so they use the jet skis to get out far enough to catch the really big waves.
@@lisagd22 at jaws they paddle out to it, don't know about nazare though
@@alexhumphrys1065 In the Nazare videos I've watched, they take the surfers out on jet skis. Those videos are wild and scary!
Is that an alien or drone flying into the shot at 1:23?
Depends on if he gets hit or not.
Why did his board appear to be tombstoning???
Big waves
How does the Person on the JetSki know where to find them, do they just look for them or is their someone on a hill or with a DRONE in radio contact with the Person on the JetSki?
The man of jetski carry a radio and there is a man on hill supplying instructions.
2:13 WAS THAT A SHARK TO THE LEFT
*Not that long* 😵
holy fuck thats scary
That is horrifying
This guy must have lungs of iron
Why dont big wave surfers take a small cannister of oxygen with them....?? Surely it would make things much much less dangerous?
How does he even surf with balls that big?
1:53 is that the nose of a board or a shark fin on the left
In Portugal there are no sharks on the beach.
It always seems like such a good idea until you wind up dead....
2:10 looks like a shark but probably just his board
I'm thinking it's his board. I don't think sharks even mess around in that. lol.
All part of the game just gasp and stay calm go limp when you got anything over 25ft youlll float back up !
im sure you've surfed waves over 25 ft
His longest hold down was 16 seconds.
damn
Ocean is fucking scary
Should be called " how to fail at surf rescue"
Until Dagon will come for you ';...;'
how to they find his board
ザッくんS. Haha it got swept 1/2 a mile north of where the video ends!
I would have guessed it got wedged in his... It was found a little later.
