How long can you hold your breath? Surfer takes six waves on the head - Nazare

  • This wasn't any ordinary day in Nazare, this was one of the bigger swells of the season. After setting off on the wave, Toby Cunningham was unable to clear the tail end of this massive 50-60 foot monster. With nearly 25 years of big wave surfing experience, Toby knows that keeping a cool head is the most important thing in a situation like this. With his ears still ringing after taking 6 set waves on the head, Toby stated "I knew that I was just along for the ride ... it was actually a lot of fun getting my a** kicked"!

In situations like this, u r just a passenger: calm yourself, relax, hold your breath and don't fight cause the ocean is now in charge.
One thing is 4 sure: that monstrous life vest that they wear is extremely necessary in these kind of waves, no way any human can fight their way to the surface, one time after another, in those heavy conditions.

Been on a few trips through the "washing machine" myself on much smaller waves, maybe 4 meters. I remember once getting caught inside, jumped off my board, swam to bottom and tried to cling to the sand like a limpet, got peeled off and rag-dolled around. So much sand in the water that it's pitch black, no way to know which way is up. Eardrums shoved in so deep that it felt like they were hitting my brain. Wow, what fun! You won't catch me out at Nazare. It scares me just to watch.

ttcherrick i started surfing first time in my life a few weeks ago. when i fell into my first larger 2m wave I was struck by the pressure and power. Thats where I kinda woke up and realized this is actually bloody dangerous, ...but super fun too. Whooo!

Biggest I ever surfed was 6-8 footers before and after hurricanes or noreasters in Va Beach VA. Any other time the surf there sucked but I remember that feeling you described where you can't see and don't know up from down. There's a few times I started swimming thinking I was heading for the surface only to smash into the sand. Then you finally hit the surface and get bashed again. Scary shit but I do miss it. Now I live vicariously through youtube surf videos lol.

I realize it was also a quick glass for his board before he thought, "no way I'll see that thing before it washes up!"
