Hi, after planting the bushes along the public road, did you water them? In a dry climate such as in the Mediterranean region, it is recommended not to touch the roots of the plant too much and certainly not to tighten the soil around them and most importantly, to water immediately with a lot of water.
Escarole, swiss chard good to grow and easy too. we used to when we had a garden and it goes into November in NJ, USA

Just a suggestion for next time you're planting in such dry soil. Before you heal in the plants, soak the hole with water first. It just helps the plant to anchor itself and gives it a better start. Also, make sure the plants are well watered before planting. The dry earth just sucks out any moisture from the soil surrounding the plant and it finds it harder to thrive ❤

That’s exactly what I was going to write also the potted plants shouldn’t be deeper than they were in the pot
Yes my property has so much clay i dig holes 3 times in width and double deep fill it with water give it 12-48 hours to drain away take that soil to other areas for fill. I fill the holes with garden soil sand and fresh soil to fill minus the size of the root ball drop in the plant and water in nicely along with fertilizer.

Are you putting a rain barrel under the new gutter on the magnificent deck you’ve built. I am looking forward to more of the Newbys. Can’t get enough. I am 75 and have had a few adventures my self. I highly recommend getting a thick layer of woodchips (2-3 inches) on the garden and around your new plants. Unlike fine mulches, woodchips will allow water to drain through to the roots of your plants where it is needed, whilst minimising evaporation and insulating the ground and the plant roots from the hot sun. Over time the woodchips will breakdown into beautiful organic material. Where I live in coastal Western Australia, we have very hot dry summers and bottomless sand which is hydrophobic so any rainfall tends to pool on the surface or drain away rather than soaking in. Many summer days the ground is too hot to walk on barefoot. Anyway, a very accomplished gardener I met told me to concentrate on "growing" the soil in order to grow the garden. Mulch, compost, woodchips etc, then in turn worms and other microbes would come and work their magic helping to turn all this into rich organic matter, aerate the soil whilst their castings feed the plants. She was right - 4 years on my garden is thriving, full of worms and wonderful rich topsoil layer that will continue to get thicker over time. Under the woodchips, my new soil stays cool and moist longer so it requires less water.

Love how you incorporated the ceramic tiles into the wood. Caruso is so gentle, even with the worm! The deck is looking good. Hope the rain doesn't spoil the effect of the tiles on the roof. It is all coming together nicely. Well done.

Oh Tara, our greenhouses are our sanctuary, full of hope and a place to still ourselves and be at peace with those plants that have worked so hard for us and the thrill of new plants to come. With regard to the new driveway shrubs, mulch them thickly, keeping the mulch from the main stem, this will keep in moisture, protect them from the suns rays and help the micro organisms.....you will have hundreds of wigglies before you know it. If we aid the planet and be tender to its needs, it will provide us with such bounty. Lots of love to you all xx

Yep, my hubby started planting trees and shrubs as soon as we moved in. I was unpacking boxes and getting our new home organized, and he was planting our garden. I’m so grateful he did……. We now have over 20 gorgeous, mature trees, some that produce fruit, others give us much welcomed shade (we live in Albuquerque, New Mexico).

Hi guys I meant to say this before. I use pine needles to mulch and to suppress weeds. I am sure you have loads and that would solve your weed problem around the greenhouse. I normally mulch quite a lot and it works all summer. Happy gardening 👩🌾

Don’t disturb the soil. All you need to do is put a little compost in the planting hole. Mix it in with the soil then backfill. On top of that put a 3”-4” layer of compost. Water in quite well. The worms will mix it in for you. This fall collect as many leaves as possible. By Spring you will have the best leaf mold that will really feed your plants. It’s that easy. BTW I am a certified Master Gardener.

Great to see the winter seedlings getting a good start Tara, I think you might find your mate the grasshopper will think they are delicious. And I loved the way you saved the earthworm, very important little animals for our gardens and totally worth the effort of relocating. And John, the shingled roof with valley guttering looks great.
Right, the grasshopper should be relocated. Those nasty buggers will eat up all your lettuce in an afternoon. I like to feed them to my chickens... Lol!

Have been watching you guys almost since day 1 and i think I have mentioned it before but mother earth does not like to be naked so I would suggest that you use some sort of mulch after planting to conserve moisture whenever possible. Just my experience at 71 years of age being an organic gardener across many states and now back to my home state of Maine. Your family is the greatest and ty for sharing your dreams with us all. @@TheNewbys the UK "no dig" gardeners use compost as a mulch. The nutrients get washed into the soil by watering or rain

Hi friends, an effective method for planting in dry soil is to directly water the roots in the hole, cover and water again. Repeat daily watering while the plants are taking root. Good plantations and constructions! Hugs ❤🪻🌿🍀

This Old House has a great video on laying wooden shingles and in it they suggest a plastic mesh under the shingle layers and also leaving a small gap between from side to side for expansion of the shingles when they get wet. Also the starter row is two shingles thick, to allow the first row to cover the spaces on the first horizontal row across the bottom over the drip edge ect.

Here in Thailand the soil is also rock hard and my gardener uses a mammothi, I don't know the exact spelling, to dig a hole. Before planting, I always pour plenty of water into the hole, wait 10 minutes and then plant. then water thoroughly. This is the key for the plant to spread its roots into the soil. Compost soil and eggshells are added to the hole

I couple of tips for watering in green house. 1. Use an old can with holes in it 2. Put a drip system up but connected to an upside down bottle with the bottom cut off - then just top up the bottle as required. Easy Peasy 😊

John, your beautiful outdoor kitchen and decking area look very Scandinavian - like something in a Bavarian village! Love it! I want to try growing more seeds here in San Diego county. Last year the squirrels, rabbits, and snails ate everything, about 30 plants. Only two plants survived, one a vegetable and one a flower and I'm babying them.🌿🌿

Hi Tara, Love watching you guys! About your seeds that may have gotten too hot stored in the greenhouse. You probably already know this, but just in case I would try this. Take a few seeds of each variety of the supposedly spoiled seeds and place them on a wet paper towel. Place another wet paper towel on top of those then carefully place them in a plastic bag. Seal it then check it daily to make sure the paper towels are still damp. If they need more moisture, then spritz them with a spray bottle then reseal the plastic bag. The seeds should begin to sprout within a few days if they are still viable. This way, you don't have to spend all that labor and space for nothing if in fact they have lost their germ. Usually the most damaging to seeds is exposure combination to heat and moisture because they begin the germination process in the package. Please check it out. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Loved today's video and especially the timelapse on the beautiful roof on the deck. The planting along the old road is genius and will no doubt look terrific as it grows taller. In Austria we call that salad leaf 'bird salad'. Interspar sell a super ready salad of bird salad leaves, cubed Emmentaler cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts, olives and cherry tomatoes.
Quinoa requires a lot of processing before you can eat it. I bought some local farm grown quinoa and soaked it multiple times and it was still very bitter. I've gone back to packaged organic quinoa. Much less stress! 😊 If you do plant it, I'm looking forward to hearing what you think.

Great idea about a mixed hedge. Sounds lovely, even saw a Jakaranda tree and a wisteria vine which will love the old grape vines below.

I’d make the holes bigger and the fill it with water first, and a lot of compost. At least double the size of the pot that the plant came in.
That soil looks not just compacted, but depleted. Another tip is, esp for trees, is dig square holes so that the roots don’t grow round and round and get root bound.

Oh, and nice dams around each plant to grab water and allow it to settle around the new plants.
I agree! One other thing. When you take the plant of the pot, gently pull the soil ,over your planting hole, away from the roots. Just a little bit to loosen up the plant roots. Even more so if the plant is root bound.

hi Newbys, Verdolaga (Purslane in English). All parts of the plant are edible. Can be eaten cooked or raw. Salads soups and stews. Short cooking time. Good source of Vitamin E & C. Enjoy. I first came across it when I moved to mexico 37 years back. Easy to grow and maintain. All the best JIM

When planting, i was taught to soak the pot so the root ball is nice and wet, then soak the hole, add wetting agents as your soil is very dry, plant then backfill and water again. Create a dish effect around the plant to capture water to help the plant. Water at least every day for the first few weeks if you’ve not had any rain and if it’s hot and humid. Also use a plant feed when watering will help them get established.

Maybe put some type roof felt on top garden kitchen. Wood rain don’t mix will curing chemicals which prevents rot.
I would paint or oil the roof. It rains all the time here and paint or oil is needed or else mould everywhere

Tara also I found the best inexpensive way to save seeds is in a cardboard shoe box and I save them in a cupboard away from rodents so inside the house is best I find. Sometimes the bounty of seeds can be large and might take half a box so keeping them safe and dry is important.

The Living Soil Handbook would be a great reference book for you. Typically you only want to used unfinished compost on top. The reason is that the unfinished bits of matter in the unfinished compost will take up at the nitrogen from the surrounding soil. Putting it on top will allow it to continue to decompose without affecting the plants growth, it will help retain moisture in the soil which is great!!!
I also sometimes sift my unfinished compost which separates the unbroken down from the finished so you still get some of the goodness without robbing the nitrogen. Then I use the bigger bits on top of the soil.

I amnot an expert in Gardening but I do know Earthworm are absolutely good for a compost heap!
You can keep the worms in a special container and they create alot of flyid for fertelizer its great for the soil

For what it’s worth, I have found that having my herbs I cook with by the house so that I use them more. That way you only use what you need and don’t waste as much by cutting and putting by your stove or sink. Lettuces and broccoli and such I keep further away from the house as you only cut when ready. Love your channel. Hope you dont mind my spoken experience.

I absolutely love your channel, guys. I lived in a similar setting in Spain about 15 years ago and miss it every day. Faith took me to America, where i fulfilled my career ambitions before succumbing to ill heath . A side effect has left me with social anxiety, so watching you guys i feel like im sitting on your porch and interacting. I love the way your children are immersed in the farm, and you let them be themselves, as my sister says about her kids " let them be little, theres plenty of time to play grownup".

Your driveway mixed hedge will be beautiful. I hope you have doublechecked the potential size of your oleanders. In California I've seen them 12 ft tall and wide. You don't want them blocking your driveway or constantly having to prune them. Just something to think about. The compost you added to the holes will help condition the soil. And if you run a dripline or soaker hose for the first year or two, your plant hedge will get consistent watering. Newspaper or cardboard with mulch on top in between the plants will keep weeds down and attract earthworms to work the soil, as paper breaks down. Permaculture. Cheers!

Janey in dig plant water repeat seems to have themes!e soil as,you and she is using a no dig method. She puts down cardboard. Then thick topsoil and then s he uses a drill type thing to dig the holes and loosens the roots. Then plants. 🌸🌺💐🍁

the artichoke gets really big. and is a perennial. mine grew 7' tall this year due to all the rain we had. it is a very ornamental.plant.

Another tip for planting in soil, apart from adding water to the hole (as mentioned below by someone else) put plants into a square hole that way their roots will go out looking for water not round and round.
