Awesome video. I have lived in Portland, OR for 24 years and wildfires are the new reality every summer. I don’t remember it being this way before. I love it that you have not added a crappy music soundtrack to your videos. It feels more like those of us watching share your experiences with the real sound.
Agree on the forest fires topic, its same in Europe as well atm. I guess there are more careless smoker tourists these days and also there are sickos who intentionally start fires
I'm glad to hear that, we made a choice early on not to add music and a lot of people seem to appreciate it. Everyone I meet says the wildfires have gotten so much worse in recent years.
Your banter is just so funny, like the rain jacket joke ...HAHAHA😃 and you hardly crack a smile/laugh ... you have a unique take on biketouring/packing .. I always enjoy your videos - welcome to the US and have a safe trip ... thanks for taking us along with you - cheers! Mat

One day (I don’t drink alcohol) I did drink 5,5 liter of Coca Cola due to the heat! Never did repeat that afterwards! I hope you can use my “advise” let me know? Also, you’re an intelligent cyclist with a lot of experience, don’t talk yourself down!!💪💪👋👋👍👍🇱🇺🇱🇺 Thank you so much for this part of the TransAm report, I enjoy it very much and will incorporate it for my route after I finished The GDMBR by car back to Washington state! What a treat! Tomorrow i will be finishing my 500km arctic by cycle route, i pushed (and carried) my bike up to a big treeles hill to get away from the flying insects. Was just about to go to sleep but i guess i need to watch this first. Matt, i watched your podcast episode just before my trip, you told people if you can do it, do it! My under a week long journey is nothing like yours but i can relate to it, bike packing is just the perfect pace to see places and people. Everyone should try it at least😊
So nice to meet such nice folks on your journey. Kudo's to you for being out in that heat, I could never do it. I used to tolerate it very well when I was younger but now it just zaps the energy out of me. Thanks for sharing. :) :)
This is a great bit of content! As a cyclist, I find the idea of what you are doing very interesting. Best of luck to you and thanks for posting the videos.

Just found you and am following your progress. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. Epic! It's nice to hear your relaxed attitude about miles/climbs, etc. Also, echoing the sentiment of others - thank you for no music! Keep pushing those pedals my friend and stay safe out there.
I absolutely LOVE watching your videos! I don’t know how many times I laughed out loud. Your videos are just so real, you really catch it all on camera very well. Can’t wait for the next one.
I have been following your YT channel for a good year now: probably 20-30 videos watched. Your Channel is excellent. Your adventure style is solid. Happy miles to you and be safe.
Excellent video! Awesome scenery. And subscriber numbers are going up! Following your garmin locator - watching for when you’ll get to Wyoming. Wildfires are really bad this year, and sizzling temps to boot. Much of the West is a tinderbox right now. Please be careful in the heat and smoke. Take care
Yeah I keep hearing that it's one of the worst years people can remember for the fires and heat, obviously the two go hand in hand. I'm being as safe as I can, I know they move fast but I'm checking for up to date information everywhere I can, and as I'm on proper roads I at least have the security that they will be closed if a wildfire is moving towards them. Thanks for commenting 👍
@@matryderadventures it’s the smoke that’s the worst - it finds you even when you’re miles away. We just got some good soaking rain, and cooler temps, which should help.
Hello Mat been following you since the GDMBR!! You have inspired me to get out there and ride. Planning on it when I retire at 65🎉 Thanks for the motivation and for the time that you take to make videos!!
Great updates Mat! really enjoying the series so far. Would love to see some more shots around camp, your bike and how your kit is holding up, likes/dislikes. Keep up the great work and enjoy the adventure!
Hello Matt, every day is a different challenge, it isn't fun riding through smoky conditions either. Looks like you are doing well, just enjoy the experience and don't worry about the time, this way you can focus on the experience itself and make lasting memories. Cheers.
This is inspiring... I plan to do my first long ride in a couple weeks (250 mile ride over 3 days) and am pretty excited, so these videos are hyping me up for i! The views from your ride are amazing! I hope you are enjoying it! Stay Safe!
Hey Mat enjoying your videos everyday and dreaming to make this rides too someday in this lifetime. Didn’t you take the same route as Ryan Van Duzer in “ Love Cycles “ ? if I’m not mistaken he didn’t cycled so much on Roads. USA looks so tempting for us Europeans. Didn’t even had the chance to ride hear in Europe struggling with weight loss , hope It changes next year as personal problems aren’t so overwhelming lately. Thrilled to watch your next adventures ! I think France and Spain have so so much to offer :) . Just watching how much it takes just to prepare such trips it’s amazing…you are a hero man ! Your making our lonely lives more tolerable and makes emotional people not be so scared to get outside and stop this anxious modern life.
Just finished your GDMBR and now having a blast watching this. Nice upgrade on the filming equipment! Route looks nice but I’d go crazy with all the traffic!
Pro tip - you may consider natural fibers ie micro weight merino wool tshirts hold much less odor wicks moisture dries quickly with insulation value while wet and provides uv protection. Smartwool. Icebreakers. Two brands I use & love. A damp buff worn balaclava style will help tons breathing all that smoke too btw. Good luck & Happy Travels!
Welcome back to the US Mat, sorry for smoke and had NO idea about the heat -very surprising way up yonder way. Here in South Texas we hit 107 today at the ranch. Be careful buddy.
More good stuff Mat, the Oregon interior looks spectacular. Love the banter with the(us) subscribers, you make me, and I would hope, most of your viewers feel involved. Looking forward to your 10 year anniversary videos with your entourage of celebs and hangers on!
Great video Mat with lovely drone footage. Top tip; when walking around in nothing but a raincoat in that heat, keep away from school playground areas ... What product are you using to keep your saddle sores in check? See you on the next episode, all the best Mat 🚲⛺🙂👍

Huge waves of nostalgia watching this, Mat. Mackenzie Pass well and truly kicked my ass too! Also wanted to comment on the warmth and kindness of our US cousins. I think that’s the thing that will always stay with me. Can’t wait for the video! Keep pedalling!
Hi Mat - Mark S. here from Cary, NC here. Fortunatelly most TV's do not come eqipped with smell-a-vision so all of us should survive the scents of the wilderness including any of those emanating from the cyclist featured on Mat Ryder Adventures! You seem to have achieved a solid rhythym & groove on your TACA cross-country journey which is certainly encouraging given your long flight(s) & trip from the UK to the States! Glad that you were able to meet some of your youtube buddies from your 2023 GDMBR trek! Camaraderie always helps lift the spirit & make us feel more centered during challenging times. Hope the saddle sores continue to alleviate and your butt adapts to your Brooks B17 Leather saddle. Temperatures that extreme really wear me out at age 66 on a long ride. Hope you're able to stay hydrated and well. Hang in there as it should get better as you get farther east & the cooler September & October Autumn weather arrives. Oregon appears to be a very beautiful state even while enduring the sections with car traffic. Sense that you'll enjoy & appreciate some of the states where you're on protected rail-trails & tow-paths even better. Try not to get down on yourself as you're more mechanically inclined than the vast majority of us! I too struggle to adjust & re-index the shifting on my bike so I typically rely on the expertise & technicians at my LBS to dial that in. I'm still incredibly impressed with that top tube bag you sewed together & your overall set-up. Did you end up upgrading to the Shimano Deore CS-M4100 10 speed 11-42t cassette on your 2022 Kona Sutra? Did you retain the stock wheelset & tyres when you converted to tubeless? Suspect that both of those upgrades will benefit you greatly on this trek. As nice a touring bike as the 2022 Kona Sutra is it's still quite heavy & rigourous with the steel frame so the extra granny gears can be a blessing on the climbs. Carry on Mat you're doing fantastic! You got this!
Thanks for the kind words. I stuck with the stock wheels and fitted Schwalbe Allmotion tyres. The bike is definitely not light. I daren't weigh it. I changed the cassette to the 11-42. I'm using the lowest gear a lot. I'm glad I made the change.
I would drive out to Oregon just to bike McKenzie Pass--the forest is stunning! Thanks for showing us the route and pointing out which towns you're going through because, again, I am following along with my road atlas circling the towns like a nerd. I enjoy it! Plus, this is research for biking the route in the near future. I enjoy your humor too. :)
What a lovely video. Luckily, the scratch and sniff was not in operation today, so I missed the pungent aroma you may have given off. What great, kind people you meet ❤ The lava experience must have been like a man on the moon moment, awesome. I hope you took the opportunity to have a weeeeeee moment on the big descent you had😂. I think it's great how ones priorities change to a foam pad and water, I love how simplistic it becomes. Well, the flasher mac made my day😂❤ Take care on your ride.
It's a wonderful ride. I started in early June when I did it 10 years ago. Watch out for dogs in Kentucky. Pick up some pepper spray and keep it handy while you ride.
Nice route. I started to bookmark the places you've stopped at on your journey. I want to visit them one day in a camper van. I particularly liked the Dee Wright Observatory. The rocks all around are just incredible. Beautfiul scenery though, I bet Google Streetview doesn't do them justice.
It would be an amazing route to do by camper as well. I would love to travel around the states in a campervan, something for the future if I can no longer do it by bike I think!
I like the drone shots. Smoke is pretty normal in summer. The Cascades wring the moisture out of the air on the west side so, things are pretty dry and desert like east of the mountains.
My mom taught high school in Mitchell in 1947-48, her first year out of college with a journalism degree from University of Oregon (it was not easy for a woman to find a job in the newspaper industry in those days). Glad to see it has some nice places.
Hi Mat, thanks for the new video! Can you maybe post the daily Instagram videos as a short here on RUclips? Would be nice to see the daily short updates. And I don’t have Instagram. Good luck on the trail!
Hi, I did consider posting them as shorts, but I know from experience that when channels oversaturate me with too many notifications I end up turning them off! Also I think if you post too often sometimes RUclips doesn't put out notifications for all of the videos, and that would be a bit of a killer for the main videos. I'll look into it, I would like to make them available to everyone. Thank you for commenting.
@@matryderadventures no problem Mat and I totally agree with you on the notifications and too many posts on a channel. I’ll just keep following your longer vids, they are awesome. Thanks for getting back at me! 🙏🏻
Epic section hike of the PCT! I knew you’d find some very generous and kind people on this journey! I start my thru hike of the Colorado Trail on 8/19, I’ll keep an eye out for you section hiking the CT! 😂 Keep grinding it out Mat and be safe!
Love the roadside banter ( with yourself!) and you are just getting rolling. Hot and smokey throughout the West, but you are spot on - what can you do? Hoping that you are swinging through Teton Valley and we can connect. Lush Aspen groves at 8,000’ and beautiful blue skies and clean air. I will take you Mtn biking at 9,000’ if you are up for it. Not as crazy as a rain coat in 95F!
That is a shame, as I said in the first video I was a bag of nerves before this one for some reason, I planned to put out a pre-starting video with my traveling and everything, but just wasn't able to get anything filmed until I got going. I think it meant I missed out on a few offers of accommodation and company to ride with! Thanks for getting in touch anyway.

See that orange water container is still in use I used it 2018,and you had the same bunk in the hostel ! Great to see the route again.
❤
It's a wonderful ride. I started in early June when I did it 10 years ago. Watch out for dogs in Kentucky. Pick up some pepper spray and keep it handy while you ride.
Another fabulous video Mat. I couldn’t help but notice something was missing off your head at times!!!! Safety first 😳😀xx
Great stuff! I'm impressed you pulled a 76 mile day into John Day. I look forward to seeing you again!
Cheers Roj. We'll catch up again. No doubt.
Boy! That Oregon is a very pretty state, huh? 😮🥰
The PCT is a hiking trail created in the 1960's, connecting many shorter trails. It's now one continuous trail from Mexican border to Canada.
@@matryderadventuresI’m definitely coming on that one 😂 xx
awesome Samaritans. my kind of America. you are out there now.
Live a great story Mat.
Your video is amazing 😍👌🏻 watching from India 🇮🇳
Brilliant, I love seeing all the different places people are watching from. Thanks for commenting 👍
Great town.
Great video
Epic section hike of the PCT! I knew you’d find some very generous and kind people on this journey! I start my thru hike of the Colorado Trail on 8/19, I’ll keep an eye out for you section hiking the CT! 😂 Keep grinding it out Mat and be safe!
Cheers. Good luck on the Colorado Trail
Great stuff bro. I’ll ask mum who said ‘if’n’. She can ask her magic mirror or summon it from her cauldron.
It's Buster Scruggs Bro. Don't get her dabbling in the occult...again.
Way to go! 🎉
great channel- hoping i can meet up with you once you get into Virginia. will keep following you for sure!
Don't rush Mat.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 cảm ơn Anh nhiều lắm vì đã luôn chia sẻ
Love the roadside banter ( with yourself!) and you are just getting rolling. Hot and smokey throughout the West, but you are spot on - what can you do? Hoping that you are swinging through Teton Valley and we can connect. Lush Aspen groves at 8,000’ and beautiful blue skies and clean air. I will take you Mtn biking at 9,000’ if you are up for it. Not as crazy as a rain coat in 95F!
Hi Dave. I sent you an email. Cheers 👍
You are amazing
Matt, so bummed that I missed your start. Live just north of Eugene so you could have spent a night. Darn! Take care in the heat, mate.
Awesome video Mat! Just waiting for you here again colorado on the gdmbr were we met. Trans is not far off, I'll find you tracking.
Cheers with cold IPA for you.
Cheers Steve. I'll see you in Colorado 👍👍
So happy these videos are coming out. We love watching.
Curious though, what is the kickstand you use? It looks interesting
Thanks. Glad you liked it. It's called a Clickstand. It's an excellent little device.
