Get 15% off ALL Diadem racquets, strings, grips and BALLS here: diademsports.com/discount/ET15. I've been using their balls for all my coaching and matches for years and highly recommend them. They're cheaper AND higher quality than most other premium balls!
you didnt choke. you simply missed an easy shot. it happens. no need to turn it into an opera
Exactly. Unfortunately, our brains are story-making machines. Critical to not let our emotions run away with the show in the middle of competition.
If you think about it, the story we tell ourselves has a lot of impact on how we perceive our game. I am sure your opponents had the impression that their shot was just too well placed so you "had" to hit it into the net. "Our opponent was so good, but we fought match point by forcing him to hit a backhand overhead". Not "we defended matchpoint because he choked". Instead "we got that point because of our great effort". If we can tell ourselves the same kind of story, we will have a very different memory on those crucial points.
You're exactly right. So important to not let those "stories" run out of control!
Ian, Great video. Scott is not only a great player, A great partner as well!
Totally agree
What a great video, amazing editing and great context.
Very proud of you Ian. Great intellect for tennis but life in general.
Now we just need Rublev to see this. 🤷♂
Cheers!
M
Much appreciated!
You bet.@@EssentialTennis
Great points to guide positively moving forward and not get stuck in reliving the past. Many thnx coach!
You're so welcome!
I learned how not to choke in tennis 🎾 matches from some legends of the game..
Yevgeny Kafelnikov.. (No nonsense)..
Bjorn Borg... (cold ❄ refocus)..
Arthur Ashe.. (Unfalteringly calm and detached)..
Plus enjoy playing tennis 🎾 😁 😃..
It's a great sport at the end of the day after all...
Tomorrow is another day.. 👍🏻
👍🏻 👍🏻 😃 😁 😎 🇬🇧..
Peace ✌️ amigos...
So much to learn from the greats!
On our way to sectionals tomorrow! Hope to handle things like this as well as you did
Good luck!
Scott's a supportive teammate, true gentleman. Can you imagine if Mark was Ian's teammate instead?
ZVEREV!!
It’s amazing how often it comes down to not getting too high, too low , and not ahead or in the past. As a musician and music teacher, so much attention is devoted to being fully and vigorously engaged in the present musical situation without zooming in or out too much. I forget who called that the “quiet burn”. I find that is helpful in my tennis improvement as well.
Love that, Tom. You're exactly right!
It’s actually difficult to do that shot to the backhand side. You should have gone cross court or down the middle. It’s only embarrassing cos you’re saying and feeling it is!
It's not as easy as a forehand, but from that height and that close I personally consider it a "gimmie". I actually love that shot.
@@EssentialTennis how’s that topspin backhand going!
U were in your teammates' court out of position, actually! He deferred to u cause you're the one making the viedos. Big mistake!
lol.....Scott "defers" nothing to me unless there's a good reason to. He's the stronger player by far.
@EssentialTennis
He didn't get in position to hit that ball. it should have been his!
This is why I don't play league tennis. Folks think that guys are the better player by far, and they rarely have much tennis IQ they just hit hard, and lesser guys put them on a pedestal. I just love defeating them in the cardio drills. They never win sectionals, and they think they are on the tour. Lol
Congrats on your cardio tennis drill wins. Keep up the great work.

Not an easy shot, especially with pressure-tightness. Great video.
THanks for letting us understand in such a visual way on how to come back and correct errors. Im curious, what would your DIADEM recommendation for arm-friendly, 4.0 player over 40, be? Thanks in advance, huge fan of your content.
If you're looking for something a little bit bigger and more balanced the Nova 100 is an awesome all around racquet, not super heavy. For something more "player frame" esque the regular "Elevate" or "Elevate Lite" are fantastic. Appreciate your support very much!
The facial hair is rockin'. Thicker and close cropped is the ticket. SHARP!
I learned short memory, regarding mistakes, from tennis. Seriously, it's a real thing. The less mistakes affect you and the quicker you put them behind you and move on the better. Works in a lot of life areas, too.
Great video, really helpful thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great discussion
Thanks for watching!
well, if that's an "embarrassing miss" then am embarrasing myself a multiple times during a match . for professionals maybie it's unusual to miss that (even if i wont be surprised to see it) but for recreational players it's pretty normal, am not even mad or ashamed if me or my partner send that ball straight into net like you did.
Look at ball !
My biggest choke is i used to get 20% diadem ball + tax free in my state. Now only 15% with tax. I'm choking 😝
How did you get 20% off??
@@EssentialTennis DILL20 used to be the code.
@@EssentialTennis DILL20
How did you do in the rest of the Nationals?
This win with Scott got us the ONLY team win at Sectionals, unfortunately. Super, super competitive matches with all the other teams but came in 4th out of 5 in the end.
Yes, super helpful, Ian. Thanks!
Always appreciate your support, Dan!
I've lost count of how many "gimme" shots I've squandered on the court and then ruminated over them throughout the next several points. Leaving those mistakes in the past and moving on is a little easier for me now, but it's still something that I am working on. Thanks again for your inspiration!
Always a work in progress, my friend!
Indeed!
