  • Being one of the most popular RTS series ever, you might be surprised to find Command and Conquer on the N64. But that's exactly what they did back then. How did the controls work out on a controller?

C&C64 was actually a pretty darn good console adaptation of the game, all things considered. Playing RTS games on a console with a controller was not (especially back then) something that had been attempted many times. They did end up making C&C work just fine with the N64 controller and the game played well, and on top of all that it was even in 3D which I thought at the time absolutely acted as a compensation for not having FMVs (and, frankly, quite horrible voice over quality due to the insane audio compression as mentioned in your video).
All in all, a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 game in my book (as far as console RTSes go).

    • @Xpwnxage

I grew up playing this on pc back in the windows 98 days, I loved it. I especially liked the multiplayer maps and Red Alert. The best advice I can give is destroy enemy harvesters for the big battles, also if you capture a refinery with or without a harvester your harvesters now have more locations to go to instead of all the way to the other side of the maps

I didn't realize this came out on the N64. The first time I played C&C was the PS1 port. My brother would bring over his TV and PS1 and we'd hook up the consoles and play multiplayer. As soon as I had a PC able to run the game, I started buying all the C&C games and I've been hooked on RTS games (and cheesy FMVs) ever since. I still love this original game (at least on PC), it and Starcraft are probably still my favorite games in the genre.

the original C&C was designed around a 1 button mouse and the ctrl key, it was revolutionary to have control groups. buildings had to be manually selected in the menu to then place. it wasn't until War Craft 2 (the next year) to get hotkeys for unit commands and buildings became a thing.

IN the PC version at least engineers are ABSOLUTELY the best unit. You can take over almost EVERY structure no matter it's health and produce enemy units. As well as build your own structure next to them if you want to expand. And if a harvester is dropping off Tiberium you can take it over during delivery to gain control of it AND the building!
Also, a tip for the obelisk, massed infantry. It can only target one unit at a time so multiple infantry can take it out cheaply and with few casualties.

C&C from N64 was my first rts and i'm glad that was this game, even today i have no idea how people talk more about starcraft if was a limited rts, when C&C is totally unlimited, you can build as you want and the enemy some times respond in the same level, the mass is like a war, not something that promised a war but give to us only a gang fight like blizzard games.
by a technical review, this game is the 3rd best N64 games of all, losing to both ocarina of time and majoras mask, i like the technical side much more, because it count every thing from the game and i was a surprised to see that my fav game was so high, but yet, even if they made the game with no framedrops, still would be in 3rd place... lol majoras mask is not only a 2nd place, is the sir 2nd place.

I've watched quite a few of these videos, and have to say I love your accent too. I love how you pronounce the "h" in "vehicle." What's your accent?

This is insane, i never knew an N64 version existed. It looks like a total conversion too, as it looks like it is real 3D rather than sprite based (at least for the terrain, vehicles and buildings)

Good luck when you get to StarCraft 64. It's gonna be damn near impossible to beat using a controller

I can tell the Westwood lads had a lot of fun porting the game into a 3D space. It makes sense that you can't rotate it though so suedo-3D? I'm really surprised nobody has mad a mod for the PC game to do this too. I guess it isn't all that appreciated in the community! The original in all its sprites only form is fantastic mind you.

not many people know about this game. It's well hidden and wasn't really advertised much. I remember purchasing this at walmart way back when it dropped originally. Freaking love this game. I knew exactly what I was in for because I had the original on PC and played it to death. The 3d was such a great novelty to play and with the ram expansion, was even more fun as the graphics got quite a bit more polish however, the framerate took a small hit. Totally recommend this game for CnC fans.

One cool thing that wasn't mentioned was that one of the buildings you can build is called the Hand of Nod. For those of you who don't know much about football this is a reference to Diego Maradonas cheating goal against England in the 1986 World Cup, commonly known as the Hand of God (because he was one of the best players at the time).

I'm genuinely surprised that this is a build and destroy RTS on console. The C&C games on PS1 seem to only be micro engagements.

The hardest mission for me in this game was always the one where you have to capture the helicopter.
    So tough 😅
