Beating EVERY N64 Game - Bomberman Hero (132/394)

- Bomberman 64 was a huge success on the N64, so Hudson Soft wanted to ride that momentum with the future of the console. They came out with their next hit, Bomberman Hero. People were ready to get more of that 3D explosive action, but maybe they changed it too much?

Jun Chikuma deserves proper recognition as one of the GOAT videogame composers, integral to the landscape of early videogame sound, beginning in the 8bit era and pushing the music of the medium forward with each new era. As the technology evolved, her work also began its evolution, merging more of her own unique influences into the sound. The Traditional Arabic and Tunisian music that she studied while attending l'Institut Superieur de la Musique de Tunis serves as the fundamental building block to all of her music. It is the unique DNA that can be heard weaved throughout an endless array of catchy electronic hooks, tying the bond together with her love for Jazz, Funk, Dance, and Disco from around the world. Jun Chikuma's catalog is testament to an artist ahead of her time, yet uniquely rooted in traditional music, music she created to transport us into these new electronic worlds. Working as a composer from outside of the music industry, her work has been overlooked by many, but soundtracks like Bomberman Hero's can be heard echoing amongst fans of Video Game Music, Drum n Bass, World, Jungle, Acid House and Techno just to name a few. In these communities her work is still beloved, at least for those that came across it and heard her talent, passion, and love that was so generously poured into every aspect of her craft. After moving away from the Video Game industry, she was active on Soundcloud, cataloging and constantly remixing and revitalizing classic tracks from her decades of work. She now plays as part of a Classical Arabian Music Ensemble, often playing the instruments, Ney, Daf, or other traditional flute work.
If you are not convinced, let her music do the work, it is much more effective than my words at saying what I am trying to say.

Sakuraba is another incredible composer. He has worked on so many different games. He has a prog album that is one of my favorite hidden gems.
@@nojuanatall3281 I don't know that I have heard his work, but I will be checking it out! I appreciate the recommendation 👍
“There was a little crab hiding behind the first crab, but it wasn’t a little crab… it was EVEN BIGGER than the first crab! What a twist!” Lmao
I used to play the hell out of this game when I was 8 years old. Great nostalgia. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The soundtrack in this game is insane
Introduced a lot of us to the genres of Drum n Bass, Jungle, Techno, and fartcore I MEAN UHHH
I come back to this soundtrack every now and again.
Notice he talked about the soundtrack while on Primus.. Makes sense. Les Claypool is the man
It’s incredible
One of my favourite game soundtracks, Jun Chikuma is amazing
Can't believe you nearly beat that game under 7 hours first try. I have so many memories of this game, it felt like 50h+
"Baby chickens came out of the wall and killed me." Not something i ever expected to hear
This is my nostalgia game. It doesn't play as well as I remember, but the characters, level design, and soundtrack are phenomenal. I just love spending time in this world.
There is an 8 hour video of a guy trying his best to explain all the disjointed inconsistent lore of the Bomberman series. I'd highly recommend it for people that are into silly things like that. It's called "A Bomberman Journey"
The salt killing the slugs-part does make sense because salt drains the water out of their slimy skin which kills them - but I am not sure if you could make a bomb with this effect in real life haha. This is one of my childhood games and I still enjoy the soundtrack.
But I think a regular bomb will still kill a slug, no salt necessary
One of the N64 games I actually owned. Good single player but always was jealous of the Bomberman games that had multiplayer. Grass is always greener.
It's actually kinda crazy they released a single-player only Bomberman game. That's almost like Mario Kart without multiplayer.
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum
They did release Mario Party without multiplayer on GBA and it didn't do well
@@JetWolfEXmario no party 😢
The grass is greener under my wiener.
Bomberman 64 and Second Atrack had frustrating single player campaigns in my opinion.
Oh Bomberman Hero, the game that uses Star Wars story and has really crazy enemies and bosses. Best of all, it has the redial song.
16:16 was a good laugh for me. The absurdity of it is as jarring as it is comical.
Been looking forward to this one. I loved the DnB techno soundtrack as a kid.
Games like these are the reason your series is awesome. I never even knew this game existed and I love bomberman! Now I can go back and enjoy it as much as you did!
One of my all time N64 faves!!!! Best bomberman game and KILLER soundtrack
I miss seeing you dressed up as a conductor/engineer for Densha de Go! in the new intro. The button mashing clip is 11/10 xD
Same here. That was one of my favorite parts of these videos.
@@dayostical same, i was hoping it would stay the same through the whole challenge. but i also think changing it more frequently to reflect the more recent games would also be cool.
I've played this game dozens of times, but never knew about the button-mash Bonus levels. Wow.
Love this game a lot! As many have no doubt mentioned, the excellent soundtrack is probably partially responsible for my taste in music as a whole! I love drum and bass and this game is probably one of the first times I had ever heard that type of music before.
Excited to continue the journey next Friday as always!
I LOVED this game as a kid! I managed to beat all the regular levels but never knew about the secret world or any of the other bonus stuff! I still have my old cart im going to fire it up soon and 100% it this tjme
THIS is the one with the classic Drum n' bass soundtrack.
thanks for using Foehn as the opening song, that's probably the most popular Video game dnb soundtrack of all time haha. Every single song in the OST is a banger.
The music in this game always stuck with me. I loved this game so much growing up. Funny enough THIS was Bomberman to me growing up lol
4:12 Bomberman ironically uses a Mermaid-like Bomber Marine machine underwater. Lol.
Haha, I'd forgotten about the "tug of war" moment from Mario Party. Had a good laugh seeing you've put the slip in the episode intros now! Had yo go back and re-watch the Mario Party ep.
Top 5 series on youtube, thanks for all your work.
This is really cool series. I would want to know which other series do you recommend
@@carlosforero8455 might not hit for you like it does me, but Reliving the War on Wrestling Bios is my favorite, its showed the Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW
Yeah what's the rest? 😅
Bomberman Hero was the second N64 game I got after SM64. It’s an incredible game with one of the best soundtracks ever. I wish they created more Bomberman platformers.
Best game ever and they never made a sequel. I don't get it
@@uhhh_adam It was originally meant to be another IP entirely in my recollection. That project didn't pan out so they swapped it over to being Bomberman since it was a safe choice in their mind.
Surprised you didn't mention this was originally not going to be a Bomberman game. It was planned as a sequel to Super Bonk (yes, that is a real game: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bonk ) but got turned into Bomberman for Sales Reasons.
That... actually makes a lot of sense.
I came here to say that. This is why there's a princess, a galactic empire, and all sorts of weird enemies and stuff. Also why it doesn't play like the other two Bomberman 64 games. Nintendo probably wanted a game western audiences could recognize, so in all likelihood they asked that this overly japanese IP in development become another Bomberman game.
Bruh, we could've had a new Bonk game!?
so it's the N64 equivalent of a Super Mario Bros 2 situation? that does explain a lot.
I've watched every N64 video you've ever done. You're the only channel that I've ever subscribed to. Keep it up you magnificent man.
0:04 The Beast is beating his Beast.
I'm beating every single Nutt for Thab64
*And I mean all of them*
lol
You are doing great. Its been fun watching your channel grow. Only request is to bump up audio or showcase some of the music you refrence in the game. Keep on keeping on!@@Thabeast721
Oh my God I've been waiting for this one! One of my favorite N64 games. I've recently got the soundtrack on vinyl and it's pure bliss
Jealous!! 😂
@@otherspecies8901ship to shore media prolly still has some
Where did you get a vinyl???
Can you send me the link or whatever it was you found the music cuz I needs
It's on vinyal? Is it official or is it remixed by some guy?
This game was a nice surprise, it's not my favorite but it was fun. It's cool that you showed all the extra content. It's amazing finding new obscure levels in an old game like this.
I like this soundtrack so much I got the official album on CD and I treasure it.
They make it on Vinyl now and it's much easier to find now.
The CD not so much, N64 was very unpopular in Japan so Soundtracks for it were a niche item. So they were lucky to get 100 copies and are very rare now. I happen to collect them
You could say I am buying every N64 soundtrack, and I mean all of them.
Im so glad you finally got to this game! My 4th favorite game on the 64, and the only one of 5 games I have 100%. The music is phenomenal for its time as well. I hope you enjoyed it as much as i did as a kid.
The soundtrack genre is known as Jungle Drum & Bass. There's good compilation videos here on YT, most of the tracks from video games.
To add to this, Drum and Bass is HUUUUGE. I'm from the UK and there has been a really big scene related to this genre for about 30 years. It's a huge rabbit hole and to discover! I used to throw big Drum and Bass parties in Asia and we would have sometimes 1000s of people attending. By the way, the soundtrack is widely considered one of the best original drum and bass sound tracks in gaming.
I'm familiar with drum and bass, but idk. This game is more like elements of drum and bass, as well as elevator music
@@Thabeast721 Drum and Musak? haha
The music genre is mostly breakbeat/breakcore/jungle/drum and bass (the distinction between these is pretty technical). It was a popular handful of EDM genres at the time and made its way into a lot of video games, more so on the PS1 but there are a few titles on the N64 that feature this sound, with the Bomberman games being the most notable.
I never played this Bomberman game, I preferred the OG type game. However seeing this footage was giving me “Chameleon Twist” vibes. Turns out one is made by Sunsoft and the other Hudson Soft. There must of been a connection in my head from nearly 30 years ago !
This game is an absolute classic! It doesn't get talked about much so it's still quite cheap as well.
love this game, love this game's soundtrack even more
This game gives me the same vibe as Kirby and The Crystal Shards.
This one got me, I thought I had played bomberman64, I watched your video on that game and didn’t really connect to it. I figured it was just better in my memory. I see this one and YES!! This is the one I played. Absolutely loved this one as a kid.
Dude I played this game sooo much as a kid! I loved this video and hearing your take on the game. Bomberman Hero has literally the BEST video game soundtrack of all time! Great video ThaB!!!
I don't think i will ever recover from that trick you pulled on us about the fog 7:07
I might as well end it all. Good bye cruel world
I played this one quite a bit as a kid! Took me forever to discover the secret world. Pretty sure I only did it once. Also, I had NO idea about those bonus levels! I'll have to go back and do those sometime!
27:07 I barely remember the full game, but I do remember that very unthreatening laugh before you even played the audio of how it sounded.
I like that this game has a fair amount of bonus content. Also, death by chicken swarm? Confirmed Zelda title. x)
I have this game. As a kid it was deeply unsettling, there's this very weird feeling about the game's atmosphere and the music sounds like something you'd listen to in a vaporwave album.
Yep, even as a kid it felt like a fever dream to play.
@@tetermc Right? It's this weirdness like the entire game is a liminal experience. Everything is familiar but something is off.
oh man, I miss that feeling so much! I feel like N64 and Dreamcast games often had that weird, eerie, surreal feeling. You couldn't look up a strategy guide (cause they were physical books back then), so you just wandered around the strange world. Sometimes your friend would tell you about an absurd hidden secret (mew under a truck type shit) that _almost certainly_ wasn't true.. but it didn't matter because it COULD be; the prospect of possibility, the unknown, is what made it fun.
I'm sure part of it is just that we're old and boring and know too much now. And obviously when you can look up every little secret, and people have literally datafarmed your favorite game to the point that they can destroy your childhood dreams with absolute certainty by telling you there's no Mew under that truck.
(but then your dreams come back years later when you find out about the nugget bridge/trainer-fly glitch that allows you to get a mew without a gameshark! Dreams fulfilled :D)
No wonder I love vapor wave
Nice new intro. I’m glad to see the Mario Party Tug O’ War clip again. Also, of the two Bomberman games you reviewed so far, which would you say you preferred more? I know they’re pretty different and you gave them the same score, but I wanted to ask.
I'd say this one aged better? It's hard to say. I have nostalgia for the first one
It takes a certain amount of chill to just say yeah, I'll take that horrible clip and use it in my intro haha, respect you for it Thab@@Thabeast721
Never got to play this one, just Bomberman 64. Which was an incredible game, miss those days playing on my GX TV.
There's so much in this game , that's super rad.
If there’s one game on the N64 I would expect to have a banger of a soundtrack, it’s Bomberman Hero. What a great experience this game was
I still listen to this soundtrack! Great video Thab and can't wait until next video. Thank you for the sweet, sweet content!
this game is a banger and its soundtrack is even greater, also shoutout to the fact that this is one of the few games where the japanese version is actually much easier than the american version
Redial gets very annoying, at least for me.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. New memory unlocked. Haven't seen/heard of it in 20+ years
I picked this game up at a flea market back in the day expecting something like bomberman 64 and was sorely disappointed. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, just goes to show every game has a target audience.
The soundtrack, the gameplay..all of it was soo much fun. I never got a 5 on all the levels. This is the first time I seen all this post game content lol.
Been waiting for this game, great video!
I was like 4 or 5 when this game released. It was my very first Bomberman game, and OH the disappointment to find out Hero was the only 3D platformer/puzzle game. Such a great soundtrack, good game design, and little moments to be memorable. I loved riding the green rabbit thing. This game was a big part of my N64 days.
Amazing soundtrack, innovative features, tons of endgame and hidden content. Bomberman was my fav character in video games as a kid because of the 64 library.
I love this damn game. So nostalgic. Can't believe you're still doing this, very happy to see.
This is absolutely not what I expected from a bomberman game. Looks kind of crazy
I was just thinking, hopefully we get another Bomberman game soon. Weird nostalgia for these titles. Awesome stuff!
This is one of my most treasured N64 games. I would say the best Bomberman. Most known for its incredible drum and bass sound track but the level design is also great. Gotta love the cheesiness of the story ripping off Star Wars as well. Gotta watch this later but hope you enjoyed it THAB
Never played this, but i remember bomber on super nes. Loved playing with my friends in battle mode
Man, the old Bomberman games have such a cute charm to them that no modern game in the franchise has been able to replicate.
I am impressed you are beating all of these. Love watching your vids.
My all time favorite N64 game. The soundtrack is just too good!!!
Bomberman Hero is great. They nailed it with this one
Bagulars laugh was imprinted In my brain 20 years ago.
Loved that game!
I loved this game as a kid and the music is still fire
I forgot all about this game. I remember we got it, thinking it was Bomberman 64, (for the multiplayer battle) and was disappointed. The music however, like you say, it's pretty good, and memories are flooding back listening to it
One of my favorite games as a kid! Definitely one of the most underrated games on the N64, even I forget about it sometimes! Soundtrack, levels, variety of gameplay makes it legendary imo! Never knew about the Bonus levels until now, 20+ years later 👀
Recently played this game again. It's one of my favorites on the n64 as a kid.
Bought the vinyl for this game recently. One of my favorite composers. I probly said it 100 times in chat but mannn I love this game I never get bored of throwing bombs
I loved this game as a kid! I'm loving this series too! Keep up the great content.
still really enjoying this series man
My first and favorite n64 game.
I would buy a t-shirt that says "I hate you, fire breathing rock turtle"
I love this game so much. Best bomberman game ever made, if only it had multiplayer it would be perfect.
I agree with you that this is the best Bomberman game.
This is basically "but wait, there's more!" the video game.
Super cool series reliving these games, miss this game!
Hmm, a princess is abducted by the empire in space and sends a robot to find a hero to help her, what is this, Star Wars?
There's just something so special about this game. Ofc the soundtrack but the early 3d seemed filled with secrets.
This game looks incredibly dope
Dear lord I thought I imagined this version. Love the play through and all your content
The screw enemies make perfect sense. idk if you've tried hammering a screw but there is almost no better way to kill a screw.
THE gaming series I drop everything to watch. You will go down in history!
I remember this game so good.
Especially farming health for the under water sphinx fight 😂 10 year old me struggled a bit more
I'm only now recognizing that you're 1/3 of the way through! Keep it going, you got this :D
Love this series man! Keep it going!
Finally one third of the way!! Just 6 more years of game completion!! Nearly there!! 🤣🤣🤣
I feel like we just started a new "season" of THAB N64 videos with this new intro!
I used to rent this one all the time.
The fog draw distance gag got me good
Redial is stuck in my head forever
One of my favorite games as a kid
7:20 "I tricked you there didn't I?"😂
Hey, love the show. Salt can kill slugs. You pour salt on them, and it sucks the moisture out of their bodies quickly.
Yes but so can explosives. The regular bomb should work
@@Thabeast721 *Nods in approval* Yeah. lol. I was just trying to point out what THEIR logic may have been.
Hell yeah! One of the best N64 games.
Question: how often do you stream these N64 games while you’re completing them?
I think it’d be interesting to see you experiencing the game(s) as it occurs.
He streams every game but I don't know his schedule between streaming this and Mario maker
You can find his schedule on Twitch
When I went back and saw that the completion time was over 11 hours, I knew this was going to be a longer video lol
Finally a play thru that was fun to watch. Cant wait to see you get to the end of this challenge. Always entertaining. 👍
One of the best games IMO, best OST of any game ever.
One of my favorite games I still go back and play it once a year or so.
From what I understand Bomberman Hero was originally going to be a Bonk game. Kind of explains why it's an action platformer.
