Other folks try to create essentially a new song with the original, sticking with a translation online as close as they can. For me, a song is far more than just lyrics. It's isn't just about what the words mean, but also how they sound. Think of it like this: If you were listening to the One Punch Man opening, and let's for the sake of this say that someone changed the "ONE PUUUUUNCH" at the beginning to something like "YOUR THROUGH". Now hear that in your head. Hear how less powerful it sounds? It robs the line of power because an open belty "AH" is replace with a more closed focused "OOOO". That's why I try to respect the original lyrics in terms of phonetics. Sure they wanted a meaning, but they also picked that specific word (in Japanese) for a reason. So I try to find different ways to say their ideas that can match the phonetics as close as possible. There are many different ways to say things. Rather than focusing on each individual word, I focus on the phrase or idea. Think about how many different ways you can say "I'll be back home soon." Tons of ways. I just try to find the one that sounds the closest to the original while still retaining the idea. Don't be so hung up on the words, think about the ideas and phonetics and you'll understand what I'm trying to do. And they may or may not be your thing, I totally understand that. As much as I would love english versions of foreign genres lets say Jap alternative rock, the melodies created for its language just can't be transferred to another. I think perhaps that I don't understand Japanese helps in the fact that the lyrics aren't so much important to me rather than the phonetics, and how the vocals carry with the song itself. The technicalities of foreign songs stems from the language originated from it. It's honestly one of the main reasons why people love Japanese (or foreign to you) music, its something unheard of and a whole new genre/song opened to you. Its mainly language and through that their culture is what makes the music feel different.
