- OK, what I’m about to show you might stir up some opinions-approaching a mooring ball with your stern.
Did someone teach you this method?
Have you ever seen it in a book?
I wanna hear what you think because, honestly, I had never considered doing it this way-until one of you asked for a lesson on it.
At first, I was like, “Yeah nah, why would you do that?” It sounded risky-like setting yourself up for a prop wrap. I mean, bringing your stern that close to a mooring ball? Come on.
But then, sips coffee, I realized: prop wraps happen anyway. It’s all about being aware of your propeller.
And then I started thinking about the advantages.
Better visibility.
Usually, a lower point of contact for the line.
Your bow stays steady.
And if you’re single-handed, you’re not running back and forth like a maniac.
Honestly, I can’t think of a single disadvantage compared to the usual method. But hey, if you can, drop it in the comments.
Here’s how it’s done:
Prep a line from your bow to your stern.
Approach with your stern into the wind-keep it slow and controlled.
Pick up the mooring ball, warp the line around, and bring it back to the same bow cleat.
Boom, you’re done with the tricky part-just tie on a second line, and you’re set.
For a deeper dive, I’ve got a full lesson up on my site-check it out.

A thing of beauty. I almost wept with joy. Thanks for sharing!
mooring line cleated off the bow cleat and broght aft outside of shrouds etc so you can feed it through the mooring ball eye quickly. I use this method in windy conditions a lot. Even easier if you have a platform and can sit crew member on the platform with boat hook or mooring line ready. Another way to do it is simply to attach mooring line to aft cleat to quickly secure the boat. You can then sort your bow line later but you are safe and attached to mooring ball. Glad you gave it a go! Hope others find it helpful.
Yes! I wondered why he did not bring a dock line from the bow cleat aft. In the worst case - with a short dock line - the line should still be long enough to enable the skipper to bring the line aft of the shrouds. Secure the line to a lifeline with a half or cow hitch.
Passing a boat hook with a load (the mooring ball) on it from hand to hand outside the shrouds is a recipe for disaster. The high likelihood of dropping the boat hook at any time while bringing the mooring to the bow, leading to another shitshow *in the mooring field*, would keep me from ever trying the method shown.
@@oday3514 The aft method shown is much much easier in strong winds so you dont have to fight keeping your baw bouncing about with boat crew struggling to moor. I think oran only used boat hook here as he was trying this method to see how it goes. I use this method often when single handed and in strong winds. As your propulsion and rudder are on the aft part of the boat it is much easier to ''drive it'' up to a mooring buoy.
@@Pavtastico you are correct i just tried to see how it goes haha and yes next time line will be prepared better :D
Thanks 🙏
Yup, defentily a recipe for a shitshow (minor though no need to exaggerate)
Thats why we try, learn from what was done, and perfrome better !
In the description I mention to do it with the line preperd from beforehand 😁
It’s the recommended procedure for catamarans. But as it was mentioned already, you need to bring your line to the stern. ;-)
