Great list. But..... Shannon 43's / 38's need to be on this list. Heavy, Skeg, Modified fully encapsulated keel, teak, keel step mast, Canoe Stern. Smart interiors, hand holds everywhere, Interiors built by master craftsmen. And I'd argue as good as Oyster but even more robust. The hardest part of getting one is finding one. If you ever need to sail on one, let me know, you have a standing invitation from LI Sound NY!
James, you hit the right price point, But the age of them, even the well maintained will need $50 large to do an offshore passage over two weeks. And those leaky teaky's....they won't make it out of port for the maintenance time required . Perry drew a lot of great boats for blue water. Some of the yards were less than ordinary in execution. Your selections where the yards enjoy more renown that the NA is most impressive; the Swedes- Super Maramu, HR, Nautor Swans , US- PSC/Crealock, and the two Valiant yards, Nordic and Gordonville, Tx.
A very nice selection of good, open ocean boats. One thing I like about them is that they can probably survive hitting a floating container or bouncing into a reef - something the mass produced boats with their thin hulls and lightweight keel/grid attachments cannot necessarily do.
Yeah! Amel! #1 Im still finding strange unique engineering on my Maramu after 7 years of owning. So glad you picked this as #1 Im in San Blas. Hope to run into you.
I guess one of the reasons why the Amels feel so safe is that Henry Amel was many years throughout his career blind - and thus always needed a handheld close. And that of course also goes for the MarAmu 46 with an A ;-)
Love your taste in boats. Feel sure our beauty, Gypsy, a fully restored Vagabond 42 surveying above your number, would fit in quite nicely. Thank you. After all the work that was required, it feels really good to hear someone with your experience appreciates these beautiful so comfortable older designs.
Great informative video. I hope to see more content from you like this. Can you please elaborate on your preference of the center cockpit, the pros and cons. Years ago my mother was the secretary in charge at the Port Of Lake Charles, Stevens was real big in industrial shipping. I don't know if they are related to the sailboat builder or not. Have a safe journey. Thanks.
The only Amel 46 currently available is within the stated range at $107k. However, she has been on the market for quite some time. I looked at her in the summer of 2023 at $119k. At that time she needed at least $50k of work as both in-mast units were in need of major work, not to mention a host of other issues. I don't believe you can find a quality turn-key Amel 46 for under $125 unless it needs a lot on money poured into it. I also doubt you could find a Norsemen 447 in decent condition for less than $125. However Norsemen made a "little sister" the 40, which is a fabulous boat, and they can be found in good shape within this price range. I would include the Contest line from the 38s to the 42s which are within the price frame and great seaworthy boats.
I saw a few of these boats or slightly larger by the same manufacturer when we were purchasing 3years ago. We went with the Moody 47 for about 25k more than the price range covered here. Hylas 44 was a close second.
Hey great channel been watching a while now straight talking love that about this channel and the raw way he does things I have emailed you for some help cash waiting for you advice thanks for everything you do for sharing your knowledge of boats with us ....
Please confirm that a Moody 425 vs Moody 44 would also make your list for a Bluewater circumnavigation. Sailboatdata has both boats very close in almost all categories. TIA
I waited and waited for an Alubat or Garcia, but after none came up, I went on Yacht world to look for one.. guess I now know why they didn't come up on the list :D
Great video, James. What type of stern design do you prefer for a blue water cruiser, a canoe stern (such as the Pacific Seacraft 37) or a relatively wide stern (like the Passport 40)? Thanks.
How is your opinion on the Dutch Trintellas, older boats like the 38 were strong build for long passage. Great layout not the fastest but you feel very safe, sailing is still a joy to do! Build bij Anne wever design by van der Stadt.
Hahaha. It's funny, because when I was putting this together and looking for good photos I saw quite a few boats I would love to own one day. It's all a balance of pros and cons.
@thelastpirate Ok. Sailboatdata and wikipedia both say fin keel with skeg hung rudder. Not trying to argue though. I thought perhaps there was a full keel that looked like a fin keel that's why I asked. Really like your videos.
@@thelastpirateI was not expecting a reply. My Brother and Brother in law have an Amel Marimu (JAZZ}. My Uncle in Conn has a Super Marimu he traded in his HR42e for. My Father had a Valiant 40 in the late 70s. He felt it was the very best boat available then. I don't remember blister problems but it was a long time ago. It was an early boat. I have just purchased a Baltic DP 42 from a friend and delivered it back to Mahone Bay N.S, in Oct of this year. Your channel is outstanding. Can't figure out why your boat has not sold? It is outstanding. Respectfully; Steve.
I have a Seawing 43 (American-made copy without quite so much teak) - they are great, comfortable, well-made boats. If performance is your bag, get the T models with high performance keels below the waterline but traditional looks above.
Beth Leanard and Evans Starzinger made the Shannon 38 infamous. Great boats. A bit old on the design side, small inside. I reeeeeeeeealy like the version that is all mahogany interior. It's dark, but super pretty. With lee cloths for the dual settees there are places to sleep on port and starboard tachs... I'd love to spend a few nights offshore on one.
Yeah well for all your million dollars .I bout a 47 downeaster in fiji for 418 dollars 25000 for paint ,18 thousand for new rigging. Sailing to Indonesia for a 30000 dollar refit. Mm let's start with 125000 then bang 100000 like zingaro did. Mmm 418 sounds good to me
These are all nice boats and I certainly respect your opinions but I don't understand this obsession for these kind of old heavy boats. 99% of your cruising will be coastal cruising and sitting at anchor and every more recently designed production boat will be much more comfortable for this purpose. People do circumnavigations and the classic atlantic circuit all the time with production boats, just look at the arc rally list, most of them are just production boats. I get depressed of all these cave like interiors of these old boats and old boats means a lot of maintenance ($$$). Just climbing on board of these old boats without a swimming platform gets old very fast if you are anchored all the time.
Yeah, all fun and games until you're caught out in 50kts, hove-to in a POS Beneteau fearing for your life and calling the Coast Guard. I've heard that obtuse statement many times from armchair sailors with no offshore experience in heavy weather. I preface these videos EVERY TIME by saying this advice is catered towards cruisers - those that want to sail all over the world, exploring and living aboard - not buy a boat and do the milk run. Yes, people cruise light production boats, and the boats get trashed, the crew doesn't sleep, and it's much less comfortable than a boat built for the purpose.
@@thelastpirate sure dude, you are the end all be all about anything sailing, you are the only who has ever stepped foot on a sailboat. Go start another gofundme and beg for some more money
You’ve been promising to do a big set of videos on catamarans and I have been gagging for it like your first girlfriend when you wore only Speedo’s at the pool. Hurry up will ya. 😂

Two more Bob Perry designs that could have made this list are the Nordic 44 (or the 40) and the LaFitte 44.

Fun fact: I’ve sold three of the boats on your list, and the interior pic of the Passport 40 was THE passport 40 I sold!
That is a good list.
Great list James, with good synopsis on each. I like the direction of your new content.

Got one of your t-shirts, great man love it…. Keep up the great work as I am coming your way when it’s buying time
I love the list of boats you picked very well done thank you .
The stevens 47 is the same as the hylas 47. Hylas took the design and continued it. If you can fins a stevens, it is a better priced Hylas 47.
Very helpful list! I wish it continues up to 700K

Yes. I suspect a lot of the boats James listed will need major $$$ thrown at them before they are truly blue water ready. A lot of $$$$.....
I have the only wooden baba 40 . paid a premium for it , but it had a extensive refit and happy you have a good opinion on it !

Most of the Valiant's were built on Lake Texoma on the boarder of Texas and Oklahoma which is 400 miles from the nearest coast.

How do you feel about the Cal 2-46?
Thank you for the very explanatory video. What about Najad 450 ?
Question: Have you sailed on all of the boats you have mentioned in this video and your last. Best and worst. So all 35 of them???
Very good video! 👍 What do you think of Sirius 40 DS? Thanks 🙏
Awesome boat but about 4-5x more than the $125k mark!

Great list I’m into older designs myself and love a heavy boat ride. So what about Gozzard?
What about Kelly Peterson 44 46? They are centre cockpit pretty and solid and drippping with teak inside. I have a 46 in NZ

Just wondering if there’s any catamarans you consider as blue water.
What about Nauticat?? Any good?
badass bluwater bank breakers!
Is the discovery 50 a good bluewatter sail boat ?
What about the Wauquiez centurion?
Has the Island Packet been on any lists yet? Just toured a couple of older and newer models at the St. Pete boat show. Thanks!

thoughts on a Catalina Morgan 45 Center Cockpit?
No arguments from me 👍
Hi James is there any cheoy lees that fit that list
