  • In this tutorial we look at playing Elite Dangerous in VR using a mobile phone and Riftcat/VRidge. While no where near the quality of a gaming VR headset such as the Oculus Rift with a high end phone and computer it can be usable and give you a taste of what VR has to offer if you're considering the purchase. Note this is NOT supported on iOS, Android only.

    3:18 That's exactly how I felt when I first tried Elite in VR. Worth every single penny.

    I love your videos :)
    For those who can't use their phones like this, there are some other head-tracking options. I started with a handmade IR tracker with a camera and upgraded to ED Tracker - I can't really play without the ability to look around anymore.
    So there are options if your phone doesn't have the sensors or isn't new enough :)

    I've been using Riftcat with a Oculus Go for two years now and was very happy with it. However just switched to ALVR ( Airlight VR) and have found it to be much much better. Less lost or blurry frames, less GPU / CPU load meaning I can actually run in higher settings in-game. Probably depends on what hardware you have on both PC and headset, but definitely try both out to see which works best for you. The experience is now so good, I think it's better than a Rift CV1 but probably still not as good as the new Rift S.

    With VR; you're flying a f***ing spaceship LOL it really is a huge difference; I agree. Nice tutorial.

    I've never played with an Oculus or Vice (too many wives and children lol, not enough money) but I think you under-sell this method. I'm really impressed and it's very payable with my PC and phone neither of which are top notch. I stream over wi-fi from my 1050 Ti PC to my Pixel 2 and it's ok. Text legible, field of view is very limited though which is frustrating. Thanks for the video, I play this way often now and loved trying out the beta in VR, cracking 'roids is awesome!

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  5 лет назад

      I think the reason you think I under-sell this is because you haven't used a Rift or Vive - without being rude you don't know what you're talking about. Yes, this method works surprisingly well but it really doesn't hold a candle to a "real" setup. Try one and you'll see what I mean. If you just don't have the means - but somehow have a $500+ cell phone and headset for it - then this is a barely acceptable solution IMHO (again compared to my Rift). It does offer a great view of what VR can do for someone considering it - so if you really enjoy this and can afford a Rift then by all means GET ONE.

    works almost flawlessly with my oneplus 3. With USB tethering enabled and most settings pretty high.
    Still, a lot of things on my ships dashboard are not very readable. And I am using quite a good lense-system.

  • @pdppdp3854

    i believe the best alternative to the VR from my experience is using the in-game 3D sbs(bypassing steamvr) settings alongside the moonlight App(nvidia streaming)... you would need a separate tracker ie.. ED tracker wireless or wired... but ive found the 3d experience quite good!!
    I think utilising the riftcat app headtracking probably lessens the experience(jerkiness)... just going by what i see in this video

    Can you do a video about preparing to visit sag a and colonia. I planned to take the neutron highway. I also hear it's hard to make money except for exploration at colonia. Fyi I'm taking either my vette for combat or conda for everything else

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      A Vette to Sag A*, are you crazy?!?! You'd get a 20 ly jump range *at best*, definitely go in the Conda. If you're moving to Colonia fly in your Conda and ship your Vette but warning, that's WAY expensive. As for a build I can do a video on that but a quick Google search will net you a lot of good options. 6A or higher fuel scoop, 2-3 AFMUs and 2-3 heat sinks - D rate everything and engineer your FSD are sorta the minimums.

    • @cobaltblue1975
      @cobaltblue1975 6 лет назад

      If it were me I'd take the Conda, you can't beat that jump range. The vette would be like trying to get from New York to L.A. on a bicycle. You'll get there, but at some point in the middle you'll wish you made a different choice because one day......you'll want to go back to the Bubble. The Conda is more than combat capable (though less maneuverable). Not sure (and can't be bothered to check) what outfitting options are available at Colonia but you may even be able to go pure explorer build to get there fast then load out for battle when you get there. If you are rich, you could even have your engineered parts shipped there. Now if you don't care about the travel time, then the vette is the obvious choice for pew pew, once you arrive getting around the region is a snap as the star density is greater.

      CMDR Exigeous so my issue I'm having is that I want to own a carrier ship that is said to release so I have been grinding making 50 million a run to medb but don't know about money making out there and how much I can make. I am obviously trying to net billions to prepare for the sure to be massive cost on one of those ships. That's why I have been holding back to go there. My fully loaded g5 conda is more than ready.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Cobaltblue1975 - while sure, the Anaconda does afford a lot more space I absolutely hate it for exploration. First the view in it is terrible, especially in VR when compared to the glorious views from the Asp X and second is the terrible, horrendous supercruise maneuverability and third it's more than 6 times the cost. While it all comes down to personal preference, and you can still use this guide you'd just have to grind a LOT more credits, I made the mistake of taking a Conda on my first long range trip and regretted it nearly immediately.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад +1

      Jetstar4 - while there could be nothing stopping you from owning your own carrier ship realize that first, we have no idea how the feature will work and my strong advice is to never assume a feature with Frontier as you *will* get burned as things like multicrew have shown us (really still no SRV support???). While I hate to speculate about features due to Frontier's track record I have to imagine the carriers are going to be extremely expensive, likely $10B+ and you'll think of them more as a station than a ship. I'm guessing that like the meag ships they will move once per cycle (7 days) with some kind of limited range.

    I did this a while ago and hit too many issues. I was using iphone tho. It worked but too buggy. But it worked with subnautica damn near perfectly. Thee only reason i stopped using it is cuz my old iphone 5s screen is too small and i just wanted to see if i could get it to work more than anything

  • @DMidNyte

    I tried this method, as i have a samsung oculus, and it wont allow a port for cabeling. So i got a google carboard. The other problem is that im on wifi. Long story short, although i got it to work usimg steam, the graphics, (not the cardboard as one would think) was too horrible to try playing with. So its back to the monitor and trackIR for me.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Yeah, I'm sure that's the case for many - I just wanted to play with it and figured I'd put out a quick video about it.

      if people have the GearVR, it only works over wifi, and isn't worth the money for the software.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Thanks for pointing that out Nyte, I didn't realize they don't pass through the USB port which is not only pretty stupid for this reason but also for charging while playing.

      Exactly same here... My problem is the wifi bandwith... Too low means horrible video quality, i can't even read anything... even if I tried a lot of settings... So sad it's not working so well

      Don't yet - I actually got the Go about a week ago and there's no way to do this with it - yet at least. It's supposed to be 1:1 compatible with Gear VR but there's not a way to get the app loaded on the Go but I bet there will be. As soon as there is I'll have a video on it as I do really like the Go a lot.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      The CPU/GPU won't be any better/different as my setup is more powerful than that but the Oneplus 5T will - still I doubt it will be usable but it doesn't cost anything to find out (if you already have a headset for the Oneplus)

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад +1

      Not yet - I actually just got the Go so I could test that very thing and at present there's no way to get Riftcat/Trinus/etc. installed on the Go. Pretty sure it will come as it's binary compatible with Gear VR so it should - we'll see.

    So, the software I need isn't free? Only a free demo?
    I actually have a phone headset and an LG G5, so it should be a bit better than your G3 (had one of those too. Good, but a few steps behind!)

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Nope, not free - unlike my videos most things that are good aren't free ;-) And yes, it should run a bit better on a G5 - honestly I love my G3 and just haven't had a burning desire to upgrade it as really I use a Blu Vivo Air 4G LTE as my daily driver - at 5mm it's the thinnest OLED Android phone that's ever been made, it's stupid thin and from 2015!

    • @TheGuardDuck
      @TheGuardDuck 6 лет назад

      CMDR Exigeous
      Watch out on those G3s; the screens will ALWAYS, but EVENTUALLY, break, because they used some soldir with too low a melting temp. Over time and long enough use, it will flicker and go out a lot, and then stop coming on. I game on my phone a lot and it happened to me. 😠 But my G5 seems to be doing great!
      Oh yeah, does it NEED to be the Steam version? I linked the non-Steam version as a custom game because it used to force me to download the 32 bit version alongside the 64. So its in my Steam library, right alongside the greyed out OFFICIAL Steam version.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Fair enough although I've had it some launch way back when and no issues at all. As for the Steam version I'm 90% sure that's a yes as at first I tried to use my Oculus install location, adding that as a custom game to Steam and it wouldn't give me the right click option to launch in VR. It was just faster to install via Steam which on my connection only took about 20 minutes.

    my phone tends to drift left or right. without an external head tracking system to keep you lined up like track ir it is not really worth the aggravation of using your phone for this game.

      I think you can yes, as I think people have done that using Trinus VR which is a similar app. No clue how complex that is though.

    Hum, what about minimal requirments for pc to use vr?

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      That's on the Oculus/HTC site but generally a 4000 series i5, 8GB Ram and a GTX 960 or higher - remember those are the MINIMUM specs. Really a 1060 is about the lowest GPU you'd want.

    • @kranik11
      @kranik11 6 лет назад

      That's what i thought. I have a 1060 and 8 gb of ram, and i was wondering if that is enough to even try, thx for answering ^ ^.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад

      Oh yeah, you're good to go - you'll have to run things on fairly low settings but even then it's an amazing experience. Those who tell you a i7 4000 series, 8GB or RAM and a 1070 will do Ultra are clueless - they're getting no where near 90 fps - as that's the kicker for great performance in VR.

    • @kranik11
      @kranik11 6 лет назад

      I see, thx a lot for all those informations, and for the video of course ^ ^.

    • @nikisepps
      @nikisepps 6 лет назад

      Hmm... What if I have an i7 7700, 32 gb of Ram and a GTX 1070?
      Could I run Elite on VR at Ultra? Look, chastise me, but if I'm going to spend a ton of money on VR, I really would like to run at the highest graphics. For me that's a deal breaker...
      But I just want to know your thoughts. Either way I really want to try this out and I thank you for providing this information. Had no idea it was even a thing. :)

    • @scorpion29a
      @scorpion29a 6 лет назад +2

      Having a stable frame rate at 90fps is a huge deal in countering nausea.
      In case of Oculus I found that some experimental features (ASW) helps a lot, you need a debug tool for that tho. In SRV there is also horizon locking option that I think is mandatory. And for improving graphics a bit increasing supersampling helps also.
      Other than that by taking it slowly step by step you can get used to it and train your body not to feel nauseous.

    • @Exigeous
      @Exigeous  6 лет назад +1

      You actually don't need the debug tool anymore for ASW, it's built into the base app now - and set to auto. You only need the debug tool if you want to turn it off or lock the framerate at 45.

      I'm guessing that will be a *very* long wait as I think at this point it's unlikely to ever come to the Xbox One. Maybe the next generation Xbox though.
