  • In this tutorial we look at the Small Worlds Expedition 3. This is a realtively short range expedition for around 9200 light years in total over a 3 week period with over 150 commanders registered. As the name implies this is open to commanders in small class ships with a minimum jump range of 20 LY.

As someone who has been on the past 2 SWE Expeditions (I'm not one of the organisers, so what I'm saying here is just from my own experience and doesn't necessarily reflect the opinions of SWE), I will suggest bringing a decent shield because landing with tons of CMDRs about can get a bit laggy and glitchy. No one will deliberately hit you, but there can be some crazy ruberbanding and general physics weirdness. For utilities you are going to want confetti (lightweight chaff launchers), and remember that premium reloads make your confetti shiny for longer :D I would also recommend multiple SRVs, because we tend to do increasingly silly things in SRVs as the time goes on at the meetups (racing to the bottom of canyons, demolition derby, etc). Or do like me and accept that you will be going back to get a new one every couple of stops :P
Speaking of SRV destruction, at the end of the last two SWE Expeditions we made a game of hunting each other in SRVs from our Ships, so it might be worth bringing a couple of weapons. Just don't go overboard, we're only shooting SRVs and as far as I am aware shooting up other CMDRs ships is frowned upon.
It is really important to note that while higher jumprange is always good in Exploration we really aren't going very far, so optimising for high jump range at the cost of everything else is unnecessary and may limit your potential shenanigans. I have about 35Ly and that's more than I had on the last two, and more than I had on my first 2 trips to Colonia (pre-Engineers).
I can't confirm this next part but I have heard a rumour that one stop will be a "high gravity", world. Probably not super high gravity, but it might be a good idea to have decent thrusters and the ability to boost at least once. If your thrusters are too weak you may need to boost to jump to supercruise and escape a planets surface. If your thrusters are too weak and you can't boost, we might have to try to lift you on our ships :P (Or you could just relog without Horizons and recover to orbit, but where's the fun in that)
Also unless FDev changed it I'm pretty sure that the heat stat on thrusters only makes a difference when using them, but in Supercruise your heat from your modules is dictated by the amount of power draw. This means that in Supercruise: Unmodified generate the least heat, Dirty Drives generate a little more, and Clean Drives generate the most, because they have the highest power draw. So Clean Drives are really only useful for combat ships that run hot while fighting (using railguns, PAs, SCBs, etc). I know it's crazy counter intuitive, but if you do a google search for "Clean Drive Tuning is NOT for Explorers", there is a very detailed post on the Frontier Forum about it. The only situations where Clean Drives would be better are if you are using the thrusters (ie. not in Supercruise), and are flying on a High G planet or are jumping from a High G planet or somewhere hot (near a star, or if you crashed out of Supercruise in a Neutron Star cone). I have been running Dirty Drives on my Cobra 3 since just after Engineers were added and the only time I have had any heat problem was while dogfighting at low altitude above Achanar 3 (a > 6G world). Flying in High G makes your thrusters work harder so they produce more heat, but it's much less of an issue with ordinary flight than with fancy manoeuvres. I can fly around on Achanar 3 just fine, as long as I'm not boost turning, shooting, and working my lateral thrusters constantly. Fuel Scooping has been a total non-issue, and the performance of Dirty Drives is much better than Clean Drives.

I've set mine up the same way, except with a 2A power plant ,armored grade 1 and stripped down, and a 1A power distributor, grade 5 engine focused and stripped down. I also switch out the shield generator for a 1D module reinforcement package. This allows me to run the afmu constantly, and boost.
I do this to survive if I accidentally drop into the cone of a neutron star. The module reinforcement protects my modules and the afmu repairs them, so they take much less damage than normal. This also saves your canopy. Being able to boost means that I can line up my ship with the escape vector. With this setup, you can escape from a neutron star.
It also manages a 59 ly laden jump range, since the power plant is lighter.

Not bad suggestions/reasons at all, thanks for sharing. Do you have a link to your build you'd share?

      Sure, here you go.
It has it's advantages and disadvantages. It's worth noting the increased heat generation from running all the modules, and from the different power plant mod.

I find EDMC a little dubious though. It requires logging in with your actual frontier account. I use ED Discovery to sync with EDDB and EDSM instead, as it doesn't require frontier login info to sync your player journals. Drawback of course, is Inara doesn't support ED Discovery syncing.

While I don't really mind it having access it's certainly not a bad suggestion to use ED Discovery instead, EDMC has just been a standard utility of mine for many moons.

is this only for ED horizons? Or can I do it in the base game?

You'd be fine with base game, you just wouldn't be able to join in any of the on-planet SRV fun.

Yes, I don't think we will be moving very fast and not everyone will be able to make every waypoint. Jump on the Discord that's linked in the video description for more information. There's usually one of the organisers or staff about to answer questions.

Ok great then i just have to learn the super highway and build my asp xplorer

    • @SirKaldar
      @SirKaldar 6 лет назад

No Asps on this one, it's small ships only. Anything that fits on a small landing pad is good. We aren't really going far enough to need the Highway either. It's basically a lap around some interesting landmarks a little way outside the bubble, if you want to see the actual route go to EDSM and look for SWE3 in the Expeditions tab.
