I can totally relate to this. My 10, almost 11 yr old daughter is half Mexican (her dad is Lebanese) and she struggles with her Spanish as well. My parents speak to her in Spanish every time she stays over their house and like you, she understands more than she can speak. She's trying though and I help her as much as I can.

And about the thing with " cuarto and cuatro" try doing some tongue twisters. It's gonna be hard at the beginning but you can do it. Vamos chica tu si puedes. Luis Carlos Cataño Yes, but because the USA is so race obsessed, everybody identifies with the country their ancestors came from, even if they've been here for generations. Look at Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans, many have never even been to Ireland or Italy but they still call themselves "Italian" or "Irish". The US is a weird country.

I'm Puerto Rican and right now I'm in Spain learning Spanish and it has gotten so much better in the last few months just because I have been immersed. I have no other choice but to speak Spanish, so make a commitment to speaking only Spanish so that you can get better. It will be a struggle and really uncomfortable, but it will help you. Also listen to all your music in Spanish and rewatch some shows you like in Spanish and you can learn a lot. Good luck!

KiraiBK watch them with subtitles in Spanish so you can pick them up even more. You'll be surprised what you know. I find It much easier that way. Also if you're Latino look up the news on RUclips in the country where you identify , put on the Spanish auto generated subtitles and slow down the pace so that you can see how the pronunciation is. See if that helps as well

Hi, I'm from Argentina ans my English isn't good but i will try to give you some advice: first you should learn all the worda with "El" o "La" like "el maquillaje" o "la manteca(o mantequilla)" is really important.
Another advice is practice a lot and the best part is you can practice with your friends, you recently start to study so obvious is hard understand when they speak you fast, but the most important part is speaking and understanding (writing too but isn't to important like the other haha) and with more practice you will can pronounce better and the "R" will sound more cool hahah. Mmmmm i study chinese and are my advice with the study of a lenguaje.
Another think is listening music in spanish, see movies or thinks like that.
I hope you can understand what i wrote hahaha.

*HELPFUL TIPS* (At least I hope it helps) I'm fluent in Spanish and it took me 7 years so DO NOT worry if you are slow, it takes time. Funny thing is I'm also very fluent (native) in French (I speak French before I could even read) and sometimes french ressembles spanish for e.g: Dormir = Dormir etc... So the best advice I could give you so that you remember which is which is to do a 1 min research to see the translation in french for e.g Maquillage = maquillaje it looks a like a lot so it might help(it really work for me). Entonces, when you speak: 1) watch a lot of telenovelas in their native language(spanish lol)
    2) Talk with confidence as if you know what you are talking about even if, secretly, you don't.
    3) Try speaking quickly as a habit, even if you can't or aren't conjugating the verbs properly.
    Hope this may help you

Yaaay, how exciting! Go you! Go you! Get it, Maya!
Your speaking will get faster with practice. 😊 I am not Latina (I'm Native American), but I studied in Spain for 6 weeks and found that my intermediate Spanish got pretty good! I still made a lot of mistakes, but I could carry a conversation and spoke more fluidly/less choppy than before. That was 6 years ago, though, and I haven't had any Spanish speakers to practice with since then, so my ability has fallen dramatically. 🙁
It's really great that you have so much support in your language learning! That practice is going to help So Much! (Tip: When you don't know a word, just say it in English (or draw it on a piece of paper) & ask for the Spanish translation. That'll help with speeding up your speaking for the meantime & help build your vocab.)
I'm so inspired by you, for real! I can't speak my heritage language (Choctaw), though my listening skills are ok. I work with a lot of fluent speakers like you, but rather than teach me phrases, they just talk at me bc they think solely listening will build speaking. (I can't get them to understand that speaking and listening use different muscles and are controlled by different parts of the brain, so "just listen" is like saying that doing only squats will build your arm muscles.)
Anyway, you've inspired me to dig into the resources we have available, so that I can try to learn Choctaw. I am in a unique position, where I have fluent speakers around me. If I can just teach myself to build sentences, I could begin to speak to them & work towards becoming conversational. You're my Shero!
I really hope you decide to make this into a series so we can keep up with your progress and the different resources that you try, i.e. what works for you and what doesn't. Buena suerte, Maya!

This is great! The first language I ever spoke was Spanish and learned English shortly after. Once I started school, I was speaking Spanish with a classmate and was told by my teacher to stop speaking and and that Spanish was bad. I vowed to never speak the language again until I entered high school. I understood everything that was spoken to me in but couldn’t speak it that well and had a terrible accent but my Spanish classes helped a lot and I learned how to read and write it properly. I am 32 and I’m still learning to this day but I sound a lot better than when I did when I was a teenager.

My best advice is watch shows or movies in Spanish and put the English subtitles on! Youll begin to see how sentences go together and how theyre different from English sentences. Search up any words you dont know! As a first gen mex american i do this to keep my fluidity in Spanish :) i would NOT reccomend a movie/show in Spain Spanish. Try to find them in the spanish youre used to hearing. Spain Spanish especially. It sounds like a completely different language!

Maya I too am someone who is hispanic but did not learn spanish from my parents. Watching these videos where you talk about your experience as an "americanized" latina really hits home for me. Sometimes I feel very embarrassed that I do not speak spanish, and it can be very discouraging and makes me feel less hispanic. But to see videos where you talk frankly about your experience as a 5th (forgive me if I'm wrong) generation latina who is still learning gives me the encouragement to keep trying and learning about my culture. Thank you!

Maya, I don't know if you already knew, but the correct sound of double "L" it's like the sound of "Y" in words like "yes" or "yellow" or like the "J" in "jacket" or "jackpot".

Don't give up, Maya. First and foremost, enjoy it, Spanish is a beautiful and rich language. It's a process, just be patient and take your time, don't feel overwhelmed. I only have a suggestion for you: read as much as you can. Newspapers, comics, books, whatever you read will really improve your vocabulary and grammar sense. It's fine to learn some common phrases and expressions but you need to move forward if you truly want to become fluent and reading is a pretty useful tool. Now in Spanish: sos una chica muy dulce y sensible. Veo que te esforzás mucho para aprender español pero a veces te frustrás o te ponés ansiosa. Como te dije antes, tratá de disfrutarlo, equivocarse es parte del proceso y tenés todo el derecho del mundo a cometer errores, nadie tiene porqué hacerte sentir mal. ¡Mucho éxito!

As a Spanish teacher I would ask you to be patient and have fun with learning.
Don't put to much pressure on yourself, it IS a new-ish language for you and you need to be comfortable with that.
If you get stuck somewhere, find another way of expressing what you want to say. For eg of cuarto gives you a hard time with room use 'habitación' o 'sala' and keep using the number, eventually you will be comfortable with cuarto.
    Celebrate your progress.
    Be kind to yourself.
    Besos y Abrazos! 💟

GIRL OMG IM SO HAPPY! So I'm third generation Pakistani and none of my cousins or I speak Urdu and my parents never spoke it in the house and I only ever heard it when I'd go to my grandparents' but I'm trying to learn Urdu so I can appreciate my culture and it's so hard because you can ONLY talk to family members and it's really weird and embarassing! Also being a third-generation South Asian in Canada is pretty rare, so I'm also that weird friend amongst my Indian and Pakistani friends who don't understand any of their references or w.e! So I totally feel you and support you and love what you're doing. On a similiar note, I also speak Spanish at a conversational level because here in Canada we learn French, and knowing that helped me learn Spanish really quickly in high school and the best part of it was that most Spanish speakers are SO friendly and happy that you're learning and will love and support your journey even if you just met them yesterday. So this has been a lil essay on how I am HERE for your Spanish-speaking journey! Also it would be cool if Pero Like brought in guest Spanish speakers who aren't from Spanish-speaking countries (like myself but more fluent) to do a lil video or talk about how they learned Spanish and why or something!

I especially liked practicing Spanish in my meetup group. Two hours of straight Spanish 1-4 times a week got me speaking basic Spanish fluently in about 6 months and erased the majority of translating to English in my head. Don't worry Maya! Spanish people tend to speak really fast (even more than English speakers), so don't worry about the speed as you will get use to it. Sounds such as 'r' or 'j' are the most common struggles when you're learning pronunciation. I'm from Spain and a trick to avoid 'cuatro' and 'cuarto' in the same sentence is changing 'cuarto' for 'habitación' (it's almost the same!). Good luck with it and we all support you! :)

No entiendo que algunos padres latinos cuando emigran a EEUU no les haben a sus hijos en español. Es una pena que pierdan la oportunidad de ser bilingües. Me da pena que tengan que esforzarse en aprender español cuando hubiera sido mucho más sencillo si les hubiesen hablado en español desde bebés. Mis primas nacieron en UK, su mamá es española y siempre les habló en español, su papá es rumano y les habla en rumano. El resultado es que con 13 años hablan perfectamente español, rumano e inglés.

Hello Maya :D so my main language is Spanish, and the only tip I can give you is MASTER the verbs conjugations. I know is hard but once you got how every word change, the rest is easy. As we don't have "rules" for the verbs tenses, it's a little bit harder to learn this and probably the best way to do it's to listen to other people talking in Spanish. Also, when u are watching something (a movie, videos etc) if u want, put the Spanish subtitles, that helps me a lot, in my case while learning English :D
