So in summation, the Bad News is that Salt & Sanctuary is just 2D Dark Souls. This is also the Good News.

Just so anyone reading this knows, gold does have a late game use. You have to get the 'leader' vendor, and hand in certain items to level up your faith to your chosen icon. If you do that, vendors at your icon sanctuaries will sell more advanced items, spells, weapons, upgrade materials, etc.
E.G. If you rank up in my preferred Creed (read: not-Covenant) - the Iron Ones/Mountainsmiths - the gear vendors start selling "spare" Kureimoas (the basic greatsword) - for transmutation - and the strongest Hammer. I say "spare" because you only find one in the wild. This applies to nearly all weapon types.
@@MathewHaswell The Three also sell extra Kureimoas at higher Devotion. Another use for gold is as fuel for the secret third type of magic: Gun.

otakon17 i've never had that problem, the only problem ive had was being launched onto one of the falling platforms and not getting enough time to jump up onto the next platform

I've recently been messing around with the Playback speed feature. at x0.5 speed Yahtzee sounds drunk like he's slurring all his words and it's pretty funny.

I feel like the dark souls clone comparison is diserved here. Remember when people said Terraria was a clone of Minecraft. Sure you can chop tree and build houses in both games but ultimatly both games focus on two different things. Terraria on bosses and minecraft on resource managment. Salt is trying to be like dark souls but in 2D and it does it well. Good job salt.
Yeah, the bug with the final boss is both hilariously unfair, and incredibly easy to get shoved into. Happened to me on both my playthroughs.

when i got flung off the edge by a hangman in the red hall of cages and hit my head on about 5 platforms all the way down, flipping my character about 10 times before landing on my stomach with a dull thud. only to get up, hit the elevator lever and skip half of the hall due to luck, 10/10

Actually, the first boss in Salt and Sanctuary is not impossible, it is very possible to kill - you just need to be good enough.

REALLY late of me, but as for the use of gold:
Gold is used to purchase locks of hair and other mainline upgrade materials in the top right of the thunder castle, as well as large crates of salt, the only way to ensure you have a stockpile of salt that won't vanish when you die.
Gold is also used to purchase bullets, and bullets (with an adequate build) completely break game balance in your favor.

i literally just finished playing salty, and hilariously enough, I beat the final boss in the exact same way as Yahtz apparently, I picked me up, placed me in a wall and I preceded to hammer him into fine faster from the safe and warm embrace of concrete

A) Buy more salt at a kinda shite exchange rate
and B) Use it to buy upgrade materials for when your sword gets bumped down a level for transmuting it

Bloodborne isn't Dark Souls-esque, it IS Dark Souls just with different gameplay aspects and lore.

+GamerGate Edin gameplay aspects do not equal gameplay. The health regen mechanic and the parry mechanic do not instantly make it a souls-esque game, because that's just 2 mechanics. They just make the game faster. It's like saying DS2 is souls-esque because it's got lances and the guardbreak mechanics.

Gold can actually buy useful things, like weapon buff consumables, spammable throwables and spells If you can't find them on the world and some weapons like the axe of splendor

So far I think this game gives me more fun than Nioh.
This game really nails it, perfectly merging the fun plat-forming and Dark Souls element.
The art-style is beautiful , the combat is beautiful, everything (except music) is just perfect!
Haven't play a plat-forming this fun for ages.
This game proves that graphic really doesn't matter if the game mechanic , art-style are solid!
One note on the gold part of this review, as you rank up your sanctuary through a Leader blacksmiths and the like will sell more items that often cost more gold such as The Mountain Breaker which costs 200,000 gold.

I just started playing this recently (maybe I'm 1/3 through? 2/5? I dunno how much of the skill tree you're supposed to get through) and came back to watch this review having half-remembered it from all these years ago. One thing I can say that you might have missed is that Gold can purchase bags of salt from a vendor that you install in a sanctuary. It's ridiculously expensive of course, but it's a use for it, and seeing it made me wonder whether I should be accepting my gold supply being whittled down as I explore new areas or whether I should just buy bags of salt since the last major purchases I made I found a set or armor practically identical 2 minutes later. I think your comment on the use of gold is going to make me spend all my gold on bags of salt. (It's possible you didn't explore enough to find any merchant statues - I make sure I explore EVERYWHERE and there are quite often those statues in little side paths)

Some people call games like Salt and Sanctuary 'Soulslike'. Implying that Dark Souls defined a genre of its own.
Not necessarily a genre. It used a combination of tropes and characteristics that proved to be very popular, and as a result other games desperately try to cash in by copying that.
Which is what I would call S&S: desperate nuthugging.

Hmm... I love the Souls series- like, A LOT- but I actually found myself loving Salt and Sanctuary even more! The plat former aspects and the differences in the combat system that they cause are more enjoyable to me. Maybe I should try Symphony of the Night then.
