    "Those pebbles behind you ... did they come there in a storm? Were they dropped there by a series of ambitious seagulls perhaps building some sort of monument, we may never know..." Mr Laing, that's art, art, poetry, literally limericks brought into a tech review! Greatly appreciated indeed.

    Hi Gordon,
    Great review mate.
    A couple of comments that I hope will be helpful.
    The Windshield will hold on tight if it is pushed into the top of the transmitter firmly as the small tabs will then will 'click in' and hold under the microphone housing. I do however agree that it is not very intuitive, and so it is a bad design! We have a fix(new system) coming, and I will send you some if you give me your address(see my email at the end of this if you want to give me that, and in fact anyone else who has bought the Wireless Go, I will of course do the same).
    The other thing I want to comment on is the TX and RX maximum range before 'drop out'.
    The Wireless Go was 100% designed with ultra reliability within crowded 2.4 GHz transmission applications, and that was a priority over maximum range. It still has great range of course, but in places like trade shows, offices, shopping centres etc that have high levels of 2.4 GHz usage,, the Wireless Go will nail it at interview distances, where all others fall over.
    At NAB this year, every other manufacturer refused to demonstrate their units due to fear of failure at the show, and even at very short distances. Anyone who was at NAB will know that we were alone in showing ours working, and at well beyond a real use distances. For its intended application, it stands alone!
    I know this system is truly disruptive technology for wireless audio, and we are beyond proud of the team of Engineers here in Sydney and what they have achieved. The Wireless Go is the worlds smallest, and also the first truly wireless microphone system!
    The Wireless Go was also designed with RX low profile 'fit to camera' very much as a target. We do however understand it is very important to look at antennae polarisation with any wireless system if you want the absolute maximum operating range. This is true for any system, at any frequency, and any price. Even if it is a $20K and beyond single channel set up, we all need to follow some basic, but very important rules. High end concert systems require amazing amounts precision technology, but most importantly high gain directional antennae systems that match polarisation(or angle that the transmitter antennas will transmit at), will make or break any of these systems. While it is certainly not a simple area of physics, looked at simplistically, if you change the angle of either antennae so they do not match, you can easily lose half or even more of your transmitted power, and so obviously your operating distances will be massively compromised.
    So, if you need the Wireless Go to be effective beyond its intended range, it can easily do that and become a 'distance winner', Just mount the receiver so the top of the unit is now facing the transmitter. This will make the antennas face each other, and you will be amazed at the range increase!
    We will be doing a video tutorial on this, and I think we should probably make some simple cold-shoe adaptors to mount them in that way for people who need the extra range and dont care about the RX stick up.
    I hope the above is of interest to your followers, and again, thank you for your support.
    My best regards

      Hi Peter, thanks so much for your message, I've been a tech journalist for over 25 years and you're the first boss to comment publicly on a piece, so I thank you for your time and input.
      Hopefully you've seen that I regularly use several of your products, in particular the NT USB which has become my go-to mic for voiceovers on my videos.
      I really enjoyed testing the Wireless Go and genuinely think it'll be a game-changer for many small creators. I've not yet had many issues regarding the wind muffler, but have heard of some who have, so wanted to mention it. I also saw another video which mentioned you were working on an improved version, so that's great.
      I think a coldshoe adapter which could angle the RX up could be a fun idea - I may try it myself with a bracket for a theoretical range test. But to be honest I think the specs and range are absolutely fine for the intended use. Some of the feedback I'm getting is from folk who'd love if one receiver could support two transmitters, allowing you to mic-up two people without needing a mixer or multi-track recorder - I'd also like that! Beyond that, a matte finish might be better for avoiding dust and making it more discreet when mounted facing-forward. But beyond this, well done on an excellent product that deserves to disrupt the market. It'll certainly get me out filming more pieces outdoors than I do now. Thanks again for your comments.

      Peter Freedman thanks for your detailed comment. Please let users turn off the blue lights on the transmitter and please make a new version where two transmitters can be connected to one receiver (basic interview setup, and yes I am aware of the workaround with additional gear). Many would like replaceable batteries too. Thanks

      Why no more Cameralabs Photography Podcast? It was my favorite camera podcast, and among my favorite podcasts ever. Please reintroduce it. And if Doug can't do it anymore, you can do it yourself or get someone else to help out.
      ...And one other suggestion. Why not allow comments on your Cameralabs website articles? Disqus is easy to set up, and recommended. I know that there will be arguments in that section, but to be honest, that is the reason why I go to DPReview...to read the comments more than the articles themselves. It's just entertaining to see people's reactions and what they have to say, even if some are trollish or fanboys. (I would guess a doubling of traffic over the course of a year after you add comments, as people love to read comments.)

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 лет назад +1

      @@Rationalific I hope to startup the podcast again soon. As for comments on the articles, it's hard enough dealing with them here and on social, as a one man operation I don't have time to do all of this - it's overwhelming. Plus reading some of the comments on DPR about my work makes me want to quit - why would I invite that onto my own pages for the sake of higher bandwidth charges?

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 5 лет назад

      @@cameralabs Thank you for your response. And I get your point regarding not having a comments section. Now that I know that you have thought about it but decided against it, then I will not push anymore on it. However, again, just speaking for myself, the main reason I go to camera review articles is not to hear about the performance at 1080p 120fps from the article directly, but rather to see what people have to say about it. After a while, I know the shills and trolls and just skip past. Or sometimes I enjoy the ensuing arguments. That's me, but I don't think I'm alone, either. And I thought that it might bring in some more interest. But it looks like you are happy where you are (or, as you said, even "overwhelmed"), so I don't want to make things even harder for you. So I'll drop that idea.
      But I am happy to hear that you are thinking of starting the podcast again, as...and I will say it again, and even more strongly...it is BY FAR my favorite camera podcast around, and among my favorite podcasts in general. Anyway, keep up the good work, and thanks again for your reply!

      the break-up was due to signal loss. If you want a long range the units need to face each other. I've had my Wireless Go for a couple of weeks now and one possible issue I have found that you did not mention is that if you are wearing a loose collared T-shirt and have the microphone on the inside of the collar, clip out, and you lean forward, the weight of the transmitter/microphone can allow the microphone to flip inward with the microphone then pointing directly into your skin. On a shirt or sweater such as you were wearing with a tighter collar that shouldn't be an issue but it is something else to be aware of. Aside from that, I love my Wireless go and because of the issue noted here I am beginning to use it paired with a wired lav microphone with the transmitter on my belt. Overall, a great and very fair review.

But I'll be testing under real pro conditions, with a backup alternative of course. My only concern abt this system is that it cuts out when you turn around. Connecting a lav and clipping transmitter on waist should reduce cut-outs, but it will still cut out at times. Other than that, this is the perfect solution. Range is impressive at this price point. Quality is not excellent but still very good - you can always EQ it in post. I'll see what it's like in my test.

    Can you use this system with a handheld mic, such as an ATR 2100? I assume you'd need some sort of adapter for it. Fantastic review Gordon, much appreciated!

    Hello, do you know when they’ll release this for Amazon? Also amazing review, I love the hard work and effort that you put into this video in order to make the best review! I subscribed because of the video quality and production of this video and also because I didn’t even know about a new product from rode was produced. I was actually going to buy the lavalier mic that connects to the phone but the wire was a problem for me and I didn’t want that, because then I’d have to have my phone on me at all times but with this I wouldn’t need to worry about that!! Because the distance from the cord isn’t limited!!

    Worth it just for the views of Brighton. At the moment I’m using a cheap Aputure wired lav but I can see the day coming when I run out of wire . I’m going to pick up one of these when they hit the shelves of my not so local shop. My only concern is the non replaceable batteries which would basically mean this is a disposable item. I wonder how many recharges the batteries are are good for.

    30 mins long and all of it was worth it!! I gotta learn how to review products like this. Do you have a structure, format, or method that produces consistency?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 лет назад +1

      Well, I've been doing this for over 25 years, so I've kinda found what works for me, and roughly stick to it. I always try to look for the same things in every product I review, and test them in a similar way for consistency and comparison. Then I try and get it across as concisely as possible, which normally means key points or even a script.

    Thanks for testing range while facing away from the camera. First dropout at step 7. From what I gather, the range is better indoors than outdoors.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 лет назад

      it really depends on congestion around you. You may have more 2.4Ghz noise inside than in a quiet rural exterior. But in a busy town, it'd be even worse.

    • @luckyqualmi
      @luckyqualmi 5 лет назад

      I guess indoors the wireless signal can bounce of the walls which gives it a more stable connection as long as there are not many other wireless networks going on.

    How far can you place the mic away from your mouth before it sounds bad? Can you clip it on your hip belt and can still pick up good sound? How about placing it on the table? Clip it on your hat? Does it sound well that way? Im looking to keep it looking discrete.

    Excellent review Gordon, thank you. So the Wireless Go's range, when the receiver doesn't have line of sight - and you are walking away from the camera, is around 3 metres? I wonder if the Sennheiser XS has a better range in the same situation?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 лет назад

      I would imagine any wireless system that has bigger antennas would perform better in terms of range facing or facing-away. And yes, in my tests it began to cut out after only a few meters - my steps are about 3/4 of a meter, so count the steps until it cuts out...

    • @Scriptfella
      @Scriptfella 5 лет назад

      @@cameralabs Thanks - you've given me plenty of food for thought. I love the form factor, price and ease of use of the Wireless Go, but I worry about RF interference and cut outs. I recently shot a corporate after lunch interview in a private dining room, using two rode filmmaker lavs. On instruction from the client, I was filming from the back of the room, 10 metres back, with the rode filmmaker wireless lav feeds going into two audio recorders. I had line of sight but experienced all kinds of interference. Total nightmare - had to rely on a suboptimal back up mic near the stage. I sent the rode filmmaker kits back...If I had the cash I'd get the Sennheiser XS and the Wireless Go - and use the Go as an easy peasy run and gun back up Lav.
