NOT just another RØDE Wireless Go review!

  • Well it isn't just another review, if it was then there is no reason to do as there are so many already on You Tube. Whilst I do review it I also go beyond the actual product to talk about key aspects of sound recording and the issues of things like the pre-amps of different mirrorless cameras which can really affect your audio.
    I have had a working relationship with RØDE for many years, ever since they took me down under, twice, for a series of workshops around Australia. What makes it easy to have a good working relationship with them is their products are just superb. I truly don't believe anyone competes with them in the price bracket they are in and for microphones for stills cameras there literally is no other microphones I would consider using.

    Great in depth review! I've had the Wireless Go for a few weeks and love it. Only issue I've had is a couple of times if the transmitter is in someone's back pocket for instance the signal can drop occasionally so clipping onto a belt is definitely a better option

      The dropouts is a concern of mine with this mic.
      I have another popular 2.4ghz wireless mic and the dropouts make it unusable. I wish I would have checked more of the reviews before getting it.
      I’ll have to wait for more real life reviews of this rode mic to see if the dropouts will be a problem.

    I bought a set of these and gave up my Synthesizer analog setup. We are going to Europe for eleven months so no worries about transmitter rules in different countries. I do love Phillip's humor and care that he put's into his videos. The only comparable channel on RUclips is _This Old Tony,_ if your into machine-shop action. His videos are an inspiration to me.

    A very thorough analysis Philip. Ah yes, the visibility problem: How to camouflage the GO's chunkiness. If these devices become a "thing" then maybe they'll just become part of the scenery and ppl won't care. Or maybe somebody comes up with a clever workaround. That's about the only drawback I see to this nifty piece of kit. At any rate your videos always make me happy.

    Haha that ending was great. And I can sympathize all too well with your first range test walking out the door. I tried the same thing right when I got it, came back to the camera and just went "huh. okay." That said, I am excited to use it with a zoom H1 and a lav mic for times where I want to monitor audio and have a clean scratch file to sync A/V in post.
    I don't know if I will ever trust it enough to only record on the receiver side, but just being able to have a feed to the camera to monitor levels and background noise is a huge advantage for the price. Having a built in mic is also a welcome backup - especially because it is much higher quality than I was expecting!

      Noealz Photo yeah I need to take my time getting to know these things. I would like to be able to do these quicker but there is always so much to cover. The pre-amp section was shot whilst I was editing as I felt I needed to show how the other cameras compare as it didn’t think just using one camera gave an accurate representation of the mics...then I about another new bit but no space for that in this one, it will be a separate follow up video!

    It was worth watching this just to confirm my unit is NOT paired, and was not paired out of the box as it should be. Your receiver is showing the TX battery strength, the input signal level and the reception strength symbol is steady. What a PITA for something so basic.
    The poor reception when the TX and RX are not in unobstructed line of sight was a risk I took into account when weighing the options from the competition, but that it's not working out of the box as intended is a drag for my first Rode purchase.

    I use mine on a cord hung around my neck, makes it easy to hide under a shirt and it works well, very little clothing rub noise, Rode seem to have done a good job keeping the handling noise down.
    I also use it with a Rode VideoMicro on a lightweight boom pole, as a wireless boom mic.

    • @andrewallen9918
      @andrewallen9918 4 года назад

      Couldn’t you just us the transmitter from the Rode Wireless Go mounted to a boom pole instead of using the VideoMicro? Or are you doing that as it’s a far more directional mic? Have you tried my suggestion? I haven’t got a VideoMicro or boom pole but do have a Go so would be interested in the results. Is the cord you use much like a cord used a trade show or something else? I imagine that would swing from left to right as you move - does it? Thanks 🙏

    Looks like a good purchase for those new to lavs; I've had the old Rode link wireless system for years, the one which takes double A batteries and is brilliant. I shoot Canon and agree regarding the preamps and their noise levels. I would never record audio with Automatic Gain Control setting activated, always use manual, that will help with reducing noise. Also, the old Rode link wireless can boost the signal output from the transmitter, so you can turn down the audio input on the camera, and reduce noise further.
    Realistically, if your viewers are focussing on white noise, rather than your content, then your content is weak. If you are recording important stuff, you should be recording to a external audio recorder like a Zoom. I regularly connect my Rode wireless to the Zoom H4n when doing interviews, and the sound is much then be better than any camera's internal me thinks.
    Nice review though.

    • @philipbloom
      @philipbloom  5 лет назад +1

      Life & Times of a MultipleMediaManager™ that is a strange thing to say! How you took what I have talked about and made it a negative is astonishing! Because I explain in depth pre amps and noise levels you think people are actually going to be thinking about that more than content? Really?
      Info about audio, what pre-amps are and how to record the cleanest audio is essential information even if you can’t achieve it with your gear. People SHOULD be understanding and thinking about audio more because far too many simply don’t . So to read this boggles my mind!
      FYI the preamps in the Zoom
      H4N are famously awful too, with the H5 and H6 they upped their game. Back in the 5D days this was always a problem. I covered all this is my 5Dmkiii DVD tutorial 10 years ago! Also, the bad Canon pre-amps are what prompted RØDE to bring out the video mic pro with its 20db booster switch. It just shows that Canon need to sort themselves out when it comes to audio in their stills cameras.

      I think you've misunderstood my point regarding noise v content. Noise is generally something photographer look for in images, and videographers look for in sound quality. Unless the vlogger using a Canon has done something wrong, (use automatic) most content users will not even notice it. Recording clean sound is crucial, and clean sound can be achieved using most gear today, even Canon.

    i wouldnt be surprised if theres not a bit of multiband compression squashing that signal up against a limiter. thats normally how you end up with raised background hiss/white noise. yes you can use lots of removal tools but dont forget any speech will also have that hiss running directly through it so when you use wave plugins or izotope or premier whatever youll be removing some of the actual voice qualities as well.

    • @philipbloom
      @philipbloom  5 лет назад +1

      maybe but my point of the comparison is that the background hiss is the recording devices pre-amps. It's a strong signal from the GO and there is no background hiss really on the non Canon cameras.

    Hey Philip, wondered if you could answer a serious practical question? I wanted to know (from your opinion as a professional) whether or not the smarter investment from a business perspective would be - for example - the new and up&coming a7siii (if it had all the expected specs) or a more industry standard camera like a BM Ursa mini pro g2 or EVA 1. Because I expect them to cost about the same for a body, but I’m interested in which you think is the better business investment.
    I know that a photo video hybrid means you can use one camera for 2 jobs but the more video centric cameras mean harder lasting and stronger performance. Please let me know, or make a video :)

      Yes. Try a windmuff first. Then a blimp! Also think about a lo cut filter. That works wonders. Plus some help can come in post with specialized audio software (like Izotope).

      Yeah sure. As long as you keep relatively close to it. There is also the tascam dr10 which can be used as a body recorder or a loop through for a wireless so you have a backup recording in case you lose reception.
