Now we know why Stevie was making those wild faces on his bends! He was hurting 😂
😂😂 yep
Yes you have to work for those bends. But once you get accustomed you can play everything. I play such strings and there is no guitar now that you can give me that I can't do bends on. It also is such a satisfying feeling to give your guitar to other players and they can't even play the most simple licks. lol
Stevie also had MASSIVE hands that accommodated for the MASSIVE strings
@@EbonyPope
This is absolute bullshit. 13 gauge strings are made for tunings like C/B standard. SRV used .11 gauge according by his technician
@@juser-abuser You want to tell me what kind of strings I can play buddy? As you've seen it is perfectly possible to play .013 gauge strings as evidenced in this video.
I was playing 11s for a while. Then I sat down with myself and said “Who are you trying to impress?”. I play 9s now 😂
Same here 😂
I play with 12’s, I’m sure my fingers hate my decision

Not just impress. Keep at it and you your fingers will become so strong you will be able to make amazing bends with guitars that have lower string gauge. I love guitars I have to fight. It will transform your playing like nothing else.
@@EbonyPope That is a valid point. I can bend my 9s very easily now due to bending on 11s. Acoustic also helps!
I play such strings. I then tried to play .08s and accidentally bent it to alpha centauri. It's nice out there.
lmaooo same, i went from 12s to like 9s and i feel like i could bend the string off the fretboard around it and back again.
@@jackpierre1839 It sure is nice. I would keep one guitar with really heavy gauge strings. That way you can practice on it and then switche when you want to give your hand a break. Believe me your bends will benefit from it.
@@jackpierre1839hey, i’m thinking of buying 12-56 strings on 648mm scale guitars. Will problems occur if i tune to standard EADGBE?
Now, you and I both know sir, that you don't put 13 gauge strings on any kind of tremolo system without adjusting the neck, without adjusting the bridge, without adjusting the springs, or the cllaw, you can't just slap them on and expect them to work. Put them on a hardtail, let them sit for a day, adjust your neck, and you've got a beast of a guitar. Granted, still difficult to play compared to a set of tens, but certainly playable I've been using GHS-ZW10-60 mixed sets for years, and I love them.

Why does the Stevie ref has 800 likes and yours only has 16???
THIS. This right here.
Adjust your springs bozo, before you bend your bridge posts...

Thanks for revealing your age group welcome to the show.
Me a bass player "Scoffs, What you need to mimic only ten percent of my power"
😂😂 dude same!
This is a mere fraction of the power my 4 stringged ax
On the back of the guitar you can remove a plastic plate, and in the cavity you can adjust the tension of the springs to bring the bridge back to where it should be. Then retune, adjust again, retune, adjust until you get it right. You’ll generally need to do that whenever you use a different gauge of strings. I’m a bit surprised to have to point that out to be honest. Anyway, for anyone thinking heavy strings = unplayable action… it doesn’t have to. You just need to set the guitar up accordingly.
I would really be surprised if anyone could get that heavy a set to stay tuned with any type of Rose
@@johnsnyder2624I had D’Addario NYXL 13-56 on a Floyd Rose Special tuned to Drop C and had no problems.
Tune to C Standard. Problem solved.
Tune to E standard. Extra Torture
It’s just meant for slam
this makes me laugh so much as a drop B user... i use 11s for all of my guitars, i go down to A#... why would anyone use 13s for standard shredding?????
@@Thematchma69what 11s do you use

@@Akuma-ti7wiit’s better to get really fast legato for jazz/metal solos/spanish guitar. I use 9s with low action Medium to jumbo frets it’s so beautiful
"it's supposed to be flat". Then set your bloody guitar up for the gauge of strings you are using. It's not rocket science.
Also it should be noted that many guitarists that play high gauge strings also don't play in standard. Thought he'd have considered that.
In the original video he tightened the springs as much as possible and it was still like that, so he had to put a wood block in the trem system if I remember correctly
I feel like he could have avoided this problem if he used a guitar with a hardtail bridge instead of a tremolo
@creepysplatter9260 you don't tighten the springs when you increase the string gauge that much, you're supposed to add more springs 😂😂
Love the Mr Music shirt...!! Bought my 12 string ovation from those guys...:)
As a bass player, i havent felt the tip of my left pointer finger in years lol
Same
Put it up your hoop
Dude, forget unplayability, listen to the depth of sound you're getting out of those! That's the most rounded full sound I've ever heard in your video! Hot as hell! 🔥❤🔥
a wound 3rd string helps with that, too. to my ears it gave what i was playing more 'body' (can't think of a better word).
@@lesterunwin yes, 'body' is the word I was looking for! You got it. 😃🤟

@@EbonyPopewhy are you spamming this under every single comment bro?
How is that even remotely possible if you did that yourself then props to you
I grew up being a huge fan of Pat Martino, who played with .15s and .16s, so I played with a similar setup for a long time. There is definitely a huge difference in tone when you compare to a set of .09s or .10s, but bending and vibrato are less common inflections in electric jazz guitar, especially the further back you go.
Pat Martino 's playing with that 12 string in desperado...woa
I played SRV's SRV Strat at Rockpalast in 1984... I am the GTR Tech for Little Steven Van Zandt!!! Long story but, only the FOH Engineer and the equipment showed up for Sound Check... The LSDOS band had just finished Sound Check and it was time for SRV and Double Trouble to have thier Sound Check.. The FOH Engineer needed someone to play through SRV's Rig while he was at the FOH mix position and he asked me to do the honors!!! He asked me which GTR I wanted to play and of course I said the one that says SRV on it!!! I look back now at that experience and realize how significant it was!!! The GTR was tuned down a half step, had bridge cables for strings and the action was high!!! There were basically 2 sounds... Jimi Hendrix and Texas Blues!!!
Played Hey Joe and Treat Her Right!!! Because it was tuned down it wasn't sssoooo hard to play but my first thought was... Mahnn he's really got some tough chops!!!
I play 12-56 gage all the time. You have to adjust your bridge if you use bigger strings. I figured you'd know that with all your guitar knowledge. I have no problem playing solos. Of course I'm tuned to C and B flat/A sharp on tuner. Playing 10 gages feels so easy now after playing monsters for about 6 years now. My action is actually incredibly low with my not even slinky 12 gages though. If you use strings that big you're not supposed to play in standard. You'll break the neck of your guitar.
I play 13s and having gone from Cliff Burton and Steve Harris bass lines to 13s on guitar made the transition so much easier for me. I learned to bend on bass so 13s felt SO EASY
As I learn more I can appreciate lighter strings but I love how beefy my guitar sounds when I play. You need those calluses. It’s a must when the strings are “that small”
Rewarding as hell tho!
I play .012s in standard tuning and it’s great. They take a little bit to build the muscles in your hand up but you get there pretty quickly. Been playing them for 10 years now and I don’t see myself changing anytime soon.
I tune my guitar to C, and it's fine with thicker strings. I guess this is the purpose of this type of strings.
I have 13s on a 1948 L7. Decently low action and sounds amazing.
.13 gauge strings go on the (Little) Martin LX1E by default, and it plays (AND sounds) amazingly. The short scale really offsets the heavy gauge.
My very first “real” guitar had a Floyd rose. I went from a sears “kit” (all in one package came with a guitar and amp a pack of picks blah blah) to a schecter with a floating bridge. I had to take my guitar back into guitar center when I broke my first string. I once wound all six strings the wrong direction on my sears guitar. On that floating bridge I had it set up to where I could unwind the pin on the bridge to go from e to drop d. I miss that guitar
SRV moment
this is how it feels to play regular tension for beginners
and to all of you who are that, dont give up, strength will be with you soon
Look I'm not trying to be all keyboard warrior, but my 7 string had 13's and a 64 gauge 7th, because we played in drop G, and that shit sounded soooo good. So crispy. You might hate it at first, but once you get that tight chug response in that low of tuning you fall in love with it.
My brother uses 12 gauge strings Gretsch Double Jet Malcolm Young Replica guitar and he said even they took quite some getting used to, incidently he is in a DC tribute band called Dirty DC in which he is as you can guess the Malcolm :)
I used to play with 9-10's depending on the guitar but have since swapped most of my guitars to 11's (EB Power Slinky's) about 5 years ago and have noticed that my bend and vibrato strength has increased dramatically. My older Strat is the only guitar with GHS 10's on it today. I'd also recommend not tuning to E for the 12-13's. Just tune down to D or Db and play the same things, or DADGAD, and your hands will thank you.
I’m in love with that distortion tone how’d you get it
Adjust your bridge springs in the back much tighter, till balanced as normal
I play these half step down.. been at it 17 years.. always been 13 gauge dadario for my Gibson Les Paul Studio.
You can play 13s… if you tune to like open B# and then just *chug*
I play hybrids. 13 on the low end, slinky on the high. It was an adjustment but I'll never go back. The tone is worth the struggle. 🎶🎸
toan is in the pain
I play 11-54 strings, and I used to play 12-56. I usually play in standard tuning. I play hard and I use .88 picks.
If I play something lighter like 9’s, it’ll go sharp at impact, so the appeal of heavier strings for me is that I can get away with using thicker picks without that issue. It does make bending more difficult, though.
I regularly play with both that kind of action and that string gauge
Ok, off I go to get some 13’s thanks man!
I know you’re a really good player, so seeing you struggle makes me respect SRV even more
woah what did you just play? that was awesome im tryna learn that
I believe a setup would help
Yes, SRV played 13 guage strings, but he also tuned the guitar down. Bending hard on 13 guage strings in standard tuning is a great way to snap a tendon 😬
Why didn't you do this with a hard-tail guitar? Still would have been a great video that showed the difference in strings. Obviously the string gauge change required adjustment of the trem springs!
I was using .11 for a while, but my friend recommended me some .13 strings. I didn't really pay attention to the size untill I had already restrung my guitar. Its a miracle my fingers have yet to bleed cause it definitely feels like it sometimes lol
I play 12s, soon to drop to 11s due to the stress on the neck. Jazz players play anywhere from 12-15s which is crazy, but they also don’t do any bends.
Bro if that action is unplayable then how am I good at guitar when I had a guitar like that and I only now switched to another guitar with fucking phenomenal action?
Man is the GOAT at guitar
As long as John Petrucci lives or has lived I'm not taking this comment seriously about ANY guitar youtuber.
as a bassists and a guitarists this is funny af
Painful… but it sounds hella good, that tone is so warm I can feel it

I have .13s on my dreadnaught acoustic and they sound SO thicc!
I only play cords and fingerpicking tho - I'm not trying to bend those steel cables
SRV didn’t use 13s all the way down the fretboard, just for the big E and A i believe?
I started on 10s and never changed for 5 years. When I got my first set of 9s it was like gaining super powers lol
I play 13s on my six strings, but only because I downtune to make it fit my voice more. On my 7 string, I use 11s in standard, and drop the low B down to an A, because it has a Floyd Rose, and I don't want to retune every time I want to play in drop tuning
Ok, but that tone....what amp? great tone!
That was SRV's territory 🤩
Me playing 12 60 all the time with a stock harley benton strat , surprisingly they stay pretty good in tune and the bridge is flst cause i tightened the springs and i lowerd the action , i can easily go to drop F# with it 😈🤘
I use 10s. 9s kept breaking on me, so I needed something a little heavier but not soul crushingly painful.
I choose string gauge by tuning. I would only use 13s if I was tuned down at least to A standard. For E standard I like 9, 12, 15, 24w, 32, 44
I started out on these strings
Gotta admit, it sounds awesome with 13's.
I play with 12, and sometimes my calluses get ripped off mid-playing. I think I should choose lower gouge. :D
I got an Epiphone Les Paul off Reverb and the nut was shot because someone used 13’s on it. Took quite a bit of time to sand down the nut to fit so that I could play the guitar just fine, me and my 9-46’s…
Used to play 10s, but play 8s now.
Best move I have ever made.
String bends get harder as you get older with arthritis in your hands and wrists.
I’m pretty sure the master Stevie Ray Vaughan played .13’s - and he made it look easy. You do get an awesome tone.
what is the last thing? i want a work.
Dude if you want I can set that up to jam
One of my mates plays 12s and ill n3ver forget the shock when he saw how easy it was to bend on my guitar, i use 9s :)
Do the springs and stuff, it's got a damn trem system.
I started as a bass player so I liked the feel of heavy strings. Then I got a strat and I play normal human strings now..
SRV played in Eb too, so a lil slack!✌🤓🎸
I played 13s for years on my telecaster. Its easy once youre used to it
I use 13 on my Martin d35. I fully relate.
@@user-zx5gg8od6lit still hurts!
Tighten trem claw screws
I play a 68-14 nyxl pack on my baritone telecaster
I play 12s, specifically the Ernie ball not even slinky’s in Standard, but I play a hardtail guitar and have to lower the saddles
Youre supposed to play those strings in B standard or with a long scale length
Bro the Proper 12 bit made me spit my drink out
Love how most of these comments are basically just "Me play (insert preferred guage)...ok bye, just wanted yall to know that."
Half of them talking about finger strength when literally every player ever knows bends come from the wrist and the fingers are along for the rids
So, immediately pick up the guitar with the 08s on it and bend the high E over the top of the fretboard.
Everyone questions how SRV’s fingers can turn black from practicing, right up until they try 13s, then they see exactly why
I’m used to 13s on my 7 string
I guess that helicopter actually put Stevie's fingers out of their misery
Nah bro, let's not talk about that kinda topic. Ik it's a joke but still. Hurts to hear the word helicopter with Stevie.
I use 10s on my Jackson cuz I tune that one to Eb. A couple times I accidentally tuned it standard and the bridge got like that 😮
I've been playing like that on my acoustic guitar with .11s untill I got my electric and realised just how unplayable it was (im 13 for reference) my fingers are much happier now.
Isn't that gauge supposed to be tuned into like C standard or something?
Usually yes but they are awesome if you want to develop bending strength. I play them in standard tuning and now there is no guitar I can't bend even 4 halfsteps and more.
I play on 13s pick rolls off nice with alternate picking riffs for me. When i go thinner i lose control of my pick and have to work harder
I put on a pair of 13s when I use to play extreme low tunnings damn those strings hurt😂😂😂😂
You have to adjust your tremolo for the added tension.
And the strings are gonna ride high in your nut if you don't adjust it for thicker strings.
And you'll probably have to tighten the trussrod too.
Make a new video after that.
my first 10 months on acoustic guitar was on one like this, isn't impossible, just painfull
That's why I've always used 8s
I've always played 0.13s but I do down tune to double drop c.
That's why stevies fingers looked like they were black from Frostbite.
I played 12-52 on my les paul and i am 13 y.o. Now my fingers are 💪💪
I hate to break it to you but your fingers getting strong implies that your bending technique is ass. Bends should be done mostly from the wrist.
" This is unplayable "
Proceeds to play it for half the clip
Ive used mam.oth slinky for years, they arent that bad and it doesent take that long for your fingers to get used to them.
Try locking the bridge before tuning.
Alternative fix: just make it your new slide guitar rig!!
Yes, but THE tone!
You need to put an extra spring or 2 in the back to compensate
But your neck may suffer a "slight" bowing lolll
I run 13's on my SRV and 11's on everything else, anything lighter would be unplayable at this point.
wait..... What's Action Mines all got wedges under them up near the 12th were an inch off the guitar is this why i have gorrila grip and hate bar chords ... lol
I wanted to sound like SRV, so I got 12s, and learnt on them, it's odd because it feels more like acoustic for bends.
Yeah I put 13 gauge on a fender strat in 2 weeks later I was back to 9 s
