I love how sooo many people say not to use a tips yet NO ONE tells you how to clean them. if you wanna learn somebody something, you have to TEACH them the right thing to do. see what I did there
Think an oil like jojoba or olive oil aka matches skin ph is best method . Most people dont need to but i think people who use earphones or plugs might since not all the wax falls out.Water would get trapped in my ear . Ya risk scraping the skin with objects or pushing wax further.
I was always taught to clean your ears in the shower. You move your head so that one little jet of water irrigates your ear, and the warm water dissolves and flushes out the wax. Seems to work for me.
Also a couple drops of mineral oil, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse with water. Might save people a trip. Info came from a Dr I saw when one of my ears clogged.
You don't need to clean the inner parts of your ear at all. Just shower and it should all naturally come out, melting away in your nice hot shower. Then use the Q-tip to ONLY clean the outer part of the ear and any melty waxy bits. If your body produces such an overabundance of wax where you need to clean out thick orange chunks daily, you really should see a doctor.

So say “hypothetically” I were to have used q tips my entire life, what else could I use to clean my ears. Edit: after about two weeks and seeing the “replies,” I have decided that anyone that sees this comment should not reply to it unless they are a professional.
My mom used these hooks that she fashioned out of paperclips. Another comment thread has a bunch of options, including cleaning kits, alcohol & vinegar then rinse, hydrogen peroxide soak them rinse, saline solution, "ear drops," etc. But ears are meant to be self cleaning. Wax is built up to push foreign objects out. If it's not causing problems, it should be left alone. (so, pretty much just use cleaning methods exclusively where earbuds would contact, if you use those.)
I feel so attacked right now. I clogged my ear once with a q tip, pushed too much wax in and couldn’t hear a thing. Went to the minute clinic at CVS and I felt so silly and embarrassed that this poor lady had to scrape all that wax out, I apologized for how gross it must’ve been and she said “this is literally my favorite thing to do at work, I should be thanking you, it’s very satisfying!” 😂
@@MoodyMickey I have to get my ears regularly cleaned out at my doctor's office (I unfortunately have an overproduction of ear wax) and the nurses are always excited to use the 'Elephant Ear Washer' on me because it's super satisfying 😅😆
Not using Q-tips clogged my ears and gave me infections (infections from water cleaning, clogged from buildup). Using more intense or medical liquids to clean my ears also caused infections or liquid getting stuck in my ear causing headaches, irritation, and temporary hearing loss (like when you are in a pool and suddenly can’t get water out of your ear). I’d spend days jumping up and down on one leg and using drying drops to try to get the water out to no avail. So we switched to Q-tips 15 years ago, and at every doctor’s visit they say my ears look great.
I suggest ear drops. They work wonders for me and I generate a bit above average ear wax. There are other products that exist for it, but they can have other negative effects. Ear drops are an easy and safe way to go.
@@ghostlysorrow8682 I reccomend hydrogen peroxide (I think that's the name?) You'll need someone to help you though. Lay down with a towel under your head and spread out, turn your head on one side, and have someone poor it into your ear. It'll bubble. It's affordable and lasts a while, also hydrogen peroxide is useful for other things.
Question, what are we supposed to use? I tried not removing the wax for a while and I started having awful ear pain. Used a qtip again and it fixed everything.
In a video from "only jayus" they recommend a bit of hydrogen peroxide and say that instead of pushing the earwax deeper it will actually loosen it up and help remove it or something like that I don't remember exactly
Just rinse your ears out during a hot shower. Most wax will drip out, and you can just use a towel to clean what comes out. Don't try to pull anything out.
Warm some oil (like olive oil), then lay on your side and put ~10 drops in the ear. Wait 10 min. Do this for both ears. Earwax is good for your ear though so only do this if it's itchy/dry or you're having trouble hearing.
Don't clean your inner ears. The ear cannal self cleans. If you absolutely need to clean it, just use a towel and a finger. If it's clogged or bothering, don't mess with it, just go to stray to the doctor.
@@tainaracosta270 There are circumstances when removing the earwax is beneficial. For example, some people have medical conditions that cause their earwax to be drier than normal. Using oil to clean your ear will moisten the earwax and thin it, allowing it to work its way out of your ear. This helps avoid itchiness and impactions. I studied Audiology in college and this what my professors (audiologists) taught us. Definitely see an audiologist if there's any ear pain though.

Guys they sell stuff at the store for this. Earwax removal drops. You lay down, drop them into one ear, let it go for a bit, empty it out, then do the other one. It's easy and probably the most effective. You don't need to do all the weird home remedy stuff. If you have something REALLY bad like impacted earwax then that's when you see a doctor
QTips only push the wax back in the ear if you let it go till you have a full plug of wax in there. If you clean them on a regular basis, you won't have that problem.
That's one point that people forget. There are a multitude of reasons why q-tips can be okay, but for the general person who doesn't use them correctly, they can cause a lot of problems. Even using them correctly can cause problems if you get a faulty one and cotton gets caught in your ear. So I understand the warnings from medical professionals.

I think it's subjective. My roommate bought one of those micro scoping ear cleaners, the ones that you download an app to view the site of cleaning. His ears were filthy and took him 5 minutes to clean out his ears. Meanwhile, I constantly use q tips to dry out my ears and clean them. When he used the camera device on me, my ears had virtually, no build up or debris in there. Moral here, if you have yet earwax, it's ok to use swabs P.S. I have above average hearing
I was *hysterical* when he said not to use Q-Tips. I’ve been using them for 14 years now (since I was born) and no matter how many times I tell my mom that people say not to use them for your ears, she doesn’t care😅😂
This is me & my daughter. I told the docs we use q-tips and they say we do fine using them. They said not everyone uses them the correct way and it causes more issues.
Him: "Don't use Q-tips to clean your ears!" Me: "So what _do_ you use to clean your ears? 'Cause nothing sets me off more than seeing a friend from the side with dark orange jelly in their ear."
You're supposed to use the little kits where you drip liquid in, often hydrogen peroxide or mineral oil, which helps to dissolve the ear wax, and then you flush with warm water. I don't find that they actually help personally and it gives me the feeling of wanting to use Q-tips more than ever. But that's what the official recommendation is. Edit: Y'all, as I said, that's not what I personally use. I also use Q-tips and my ENTs say my outer ears are beautiful. The only time I've had issues with build up is when I stopped cleaning at all because of the Q-tip warnings and had a wax plug build up block my hearing. *shrugs* Just don't be like my dad and stick something worse in your ear like a pen cap--the goal is not to puncture your ear drum. If you push wax in and make a plug, the worst that happens is an urgent care visit where they remove it.
You clean the exposed visible surfaces in your ear in the shower, or wipe with a wet wipe if you need to clean them at other times. To clean on the inside, you need a special dedicated ear cleaning kit.
Now... People... do not do as I do... Use a pipe cleaner, you just need to be very very careful not to hit your ear drum. Make you fold the pipe cleaner in half so you don't have any sharp bits going into your ear. Do not swipe or wipe. Try to "snag" the earwax. I am 100% aware that I am a dumbass and that one day something horrible will go wrong. I don't see every body else running around with ears full of earwax that smells like ass. So until my body decides to produce a normal amount of earwax with a normal amount of smell. Dumbass cleaning is my only option short of going to the ER every 3 or 4 days to have my ear canals opened again
People are very adamant about not using q-tips, but I've always used them and will continue to. The reason wax gets pushed further is because people don't know how to use them, they just shove it in there, give it a few twists, and hope for the best. You have to be careful with how you use them and it's best done right after a shower, when there's a little bit of water in the ears that loosen up the wax. It gets the grody water out and it pulls out wax with it, and my ears always feel so clean after. My hearing is also far better than the people around me. They might have some partial hearing loss from loud machinery, but either way, I can hear EVERYTHING very well. I can hear the rustle of fingers on a paper towel. Not even that, just rubbing fingers together makes a sound that is clearly audible to me. So I will keep using them. They work best for me.
Yes mine get very itchy if I don't clean them with q tips every few days. But I also use ear wax remover and bulb kit once every year or two to remove built up wax
That's why I'm always skeptical of things people have been told for the last 100+ years. Ask someone who knowledgeable in the area..or Google it even still you need to double check for accuracy though.
It's okay to use q-tips on the outside part of your ear and right at the opening of the canal. But you shouldn't stick them into the canal. That being said, using a bobby pin is 1000x more satisfying than a q-tip, imo.
I went to class with 2 people who did this, except not in their ear. From one school someone stuck a pencil in another person's eye (the white part, it didn't do much harm, but I think an ambulance was called) and at another school a girl shoved a pencil up her private part. Isn't middle school so fun?😃
@@AnimeLover-fo7wk holy shit 😂😂 I wasn’t expecting that last part. I mean, In high school back in freshman year I’ve walked in on two girls doing it and one of them running out naked before my freshman eyes but I’d think the pencil situation would be worse 😂
Get in the shower and rinse out your ear, if that doesn’t work just go to your local healthcare center and get your ear cleaned there. It was not that hard to google it man.
I have a syringe with a soft triangle tip. Fill with warm water and a bit of peroxide. Squirt in, wait for bubbles 🫧 for a couple minutes, drain out. My doctor recommended this for me because I'm prone to getting stuffed up for other reasons and the merry-go-round of near constant infections as a kid meant something needed done. Mom did it to me using a cleaned-out eye dropper bottle as a kid, but the syringe-shaped one I got as an adult is much easier to handle.

The skin of your ear canal grows from the middle of your eardrum, out to the sides, and then migrates up your ear canal to the outside, and so you usually only need to wipe the dead skin cells from around the opening of your ear canal, or clear out any wax that’s easily visible at the opening with the corner of a twisted-up tissue. There are also hairs growing all along your ear canal that point “out”, so that debris can fall out much more easily than it falls in. If the canal becomes blocked with wax, a professional should clear it for you to ensure that it doesn’t get pushed in further and cause damage to the eardrum, ossicles (bones of the ear), or cochlea. Cleaning your ears regularly can actually irritate the skin and stimulate more wax production! Source: thirteen years as an audiologist and far too many patients with catastrophic hearing loss, balance loss, and tinnitus due to “penetrating otic injury” - usually a Q-Tip.
I was always told never nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear and I believe it. Had my ear cleaned in the doctor's office it wasn't blocked or anything just was bothering me and I had a little wax and it was washed out but with cold water I shovered and still do when I think about it. The only time I use a q tip is to clean my ear the parts that have the creases. When I get to the canal only a tiny bit to get the water i couldn't get with a towel.
You don’t need to clean the actual insides of your ear. Sure, swipe the outside and entrance of your ear with a qtip if you want, but the inside will be fine.
Ears are self cleaning, so really you don’t need to clean them ^^;; Earwax will push out other junk that’s found it’s way in your ears. It’s a natural process! Just clean the wax that’s *outside* your ear with a small alcohol swab and you’re good. Oh, and remember to clean your ear buds ^^

Been using Q-tips for 40 years. Zero issues. At my last ENT visit, the doc told me I had the cleanest ears he’s seen in a long time 🤷🏼♂️
Not using Q-tips clogged my ears and gave me infections (infections from water cleaning, clogged from buildup).

Him: "Don't use Q-tips to clean your ears!"
Me: "So what _do_ you use to clean your ears?
Just put toilet paper on your finger and scratch inside. Wet it with water if that helps
If you can't fit your pinky with a washcloth in there then it's not meant to have you clean it 🤷♂️
Now... People... do not do as I do...
As a person who just used a Q-tip to clean their ears (my ear is clogged now 😭😭😭) im taking a hard mental note from this video
As a nurse, I WILL NEVER STOP USING QTIPS 😂😂😂😂 my ears itch and sometimes it feels good.
Let me live my best life😂

I have a syringe with a soft triangle tip. Fill with warm water and a bit of peroxide. Squirt in, wait for bubbles 🫧 for a couple minutes, drain out. My doctor recommended this for me because I'm prone to getting stuffed up for other reasons and the merry-go-round of near constant infections as a kid meant something needed done. -Peroxide and lay suppine to clean your ears. instead of being a smartass dork

Earwax will push out other junk that’s found it’s way in your ears. It’s a natural process! Just clean the wax that’s *outside* your ear with a small alcohol swab and you’re good. Oh, and remember to clean your ear buds ^^
@@Justyouraveragechaosenjoyer clean your ear buds??????
I use Q tips regularly. My sister in law bought one of those ear cleaners with the camera on it you connect to your phone. I had the cleanest ears while everyone else that didn’t use Q tips had shit all up in there.
I’m going to continue using my g spot hitting swabs thank you 😂
why is this guy actually so funny
My husband uses qtips all the time. I played this within ear shot of him and he said "don't tell me how to live my life" XD
I would tell you that too
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
That’s exactly how my husband would respond. He puts anything within reach in his ears to scratch them. It drives me nuts.
I’ve been cleaning my ears with Q-tips my whole life. The trick is to gently and slowly twist around the outer wall and not poke in too deep. And make sure you clean the outer parts of your ears, they make look clean but they rarely are!
Yup the twisting helps a lot to not push, at least that's my theory and I'm sticking to it 😂
💯 Excellent Advice! That's bout how I do it.
