What do you think about the Kobo Libra Colour? Would you choose this or a kindle, or something else?! NOTE: This was filmed during sunset, so the general lighting is a bit yellow!
Even though I am receiving the latest Kindle Paperwhite today, I am very much leaning to trying out the Kobo. I use Calibre on my computer so sideloading isnt an issue for me.
I've just ordered my kobo, I'm not a reader I've struggled but lately I hear how many people are reading and made me want to really try and see what I'm missing, super excited for it to arrive! 😊

I got my KLC about a week ago and I LOVE IT!!!! A few things some may find helpful: 1.) you can turn off those annoying little numbers on the side of kindle books you load to the Kobo! In the reading settings switch off the toggle talking about the EPUB page number. 2.) I am returning my kobo stylus. I found a stylus called the Metapen that is practically the same exact thing for $20 instead of $80. I’ve used them both and there is really no difference. 3.) there was a 3 but now I forget. Will return if I remember 😂
YAY! I'm so glad you love it! I did manage to turn off those epub page numbers and it makes a *huge difference*! I'm also looking into the other stylus options - that's so great to know I don't have to buy the kobo one! I hope you remember 3!!! Thanks so much for watching!
Lol I'm getting both honestly😂 my kobo libra colour just came in yesterday and I will be pre-ordering the kindle Colorsoft on Friday. I honestly don't mind funding my (reading) hobby 😏
One cool thing is that Kobo Clara BW, Clara Color, and Libra Color are built to have replaceable parts with I fixit, and it comes with a tool kit and tutorial. So if you find your battery isn’t lasting as long you can replace the battery, the screen, the backing etc. That’s something thats really cool because I know people had that problem with the oasis, but couldn’t update their ereader easily. Transfering books was so much easier with Kobo, like rediculously so! Kindle has multiple different formats & plug ins just to get it to azw3 to KFX for Kindle scribe for example. Kobo it’s all kepub, and you get all your stats. Kindle deleted my sideloaded books on more than one occasion. I’m someone who rereads books for comfort so it’s upsetting. Kindle would also not show my book covers randomly but never had that problem with Kobo.
I lost a sideloaded book and it definitely was a wakeup call! I love the kobo "android" features like this where you can fix/replace different parts! I also definitely re-read books for comfort and I don't want them to disappear!
Kobo is also more user-friendly to sideloading your own files. I definitely recommend using the Calibre ebook management software with a Kobo. There are many plugins for Calibre to remove DMR on the ebooks you purchased and should legitimately own the files for. And there are just so many other powerful tools within Calibre to manage your ebook library in general.
The reason I love the Libra Colour is twofold. First, it is the buttons that I love. I set the top button fit page advance and it fits into my hand perfectly. Secondly, I love Kobo because it is not Amazon. Canadian Kindles do not support Bluetooth, so as a result audiobooks are out of the question. Also Libby/Overdrive is not supported from almost all Canadian libraries for Kindle. Bluetooth and Libby make Kobo a complete Canadian ereader. Thank you for another great video.
Love watching these ereader videos. I have a Kindle paperwhite signature 2022 and the Kobo clara colour. I will say I read so much more on my Kobo and I love the size. Its a bit smaller then the paper white but I am pretty sure it is very similar to the basic. I am probably going to be transfering over all my books to my kobo and giving my kindle to my mother for christmas. If I had to choose any ereader though after being newer to ereaders and trying both kindle and kobo I would go with Kobo all the way

I dread the day my oasis stops working. It’s been my favorite Kindle thus far. I didn’t even realize Amazon discontinued it until I started hearing about folks looking for used ones. Eventually I will get a color e-reader and at the moment I’m leaning towards the kobo primarily because of the buttons but I have time as my oasis still works.

Thank you for the in-depth review! I previously had a Paperwhite 10th gen (2018) and just bought the Paperwhite SE (2024) last week. I am now awaiting my Kobo Libre Colour to arrive. I was very unhappy with how Amazon’s newer Kindles make it very hard to manage sideloaded books. It’s possible, but it makes it seem like they highly discourage it. The Kindle feels more like a marketing device for Amazon products/the Kindle store. The Kobo feels more like a true e-reader with no restrictions.
I read an article this morning saying that the generation of Kindles have made it so they don’t show up when plugged into a computer. I’m canceling my KU. Kobo for life!
I love my Kobo colour. Plus I feel it’s a combination with the Kindle Scribe. Plus I love the Overdrive being part of it. Yes you can do this on a Kindle but it part of it. You can not write in the new colorsoft plus it doesn’t have a notebook only the expensive Scribe that which isn’t color. I am very happy with my Kobo Libra Colour.
@@SummerSayreI got the Jade and I love it however the color peeks out on the sides with the inserts so I also ordered a black on because I don’t know that I will like the Jade peeling out when I want to have a different theme. So I’ll probably send the Jade Back.
I had a Kindle Oasis for a short time a few years ago. I didn't like it. I don't use buttons. And I hated that it was heavier on one side. I got the Paperwhite instead. But the Kobo Libra Colour is fantastic. The weight is egally distributed, it has a pencil, and colours. I love it. And I don't enjoy the screendoor effect, but that's the price to pay for colours. I also do have a Basic because it's easier to carry every day. And if I ever lost it, I would be crushed but it's way less expensive than its counterparts. I could get a new one during a sale.
I love the Kobo libra color and was going to purchase a few months ago but decided to wait because I heard kindle was coming out with a color version and their were rumors that it would mimic the oasis because I need the turn page buttons but now that the colorsoft is out it’s very underwhelming. With that said, the ease of using both kindle unlimited along with Libby on my kindle is unmatched. With my ADHD I just hate the idea of and just honestly can’t keep up with so many devices ugh this is so tough. But I’m gonna wait until next year to see if kindle steps her game up with the colorsoft before just caving to the kobo.
I really hope they step it up... it would be nice if they had one device that would rule them all. I know they want to be "touch forward" but so many people have said they just want an oasis-like device back.... I would hope they'd listen or they'll lose a lot of people
@@SummerSayre agreed! I’ve already sent my Christmas list out with the white boox go 7 color. She’s the only one that can do all that I need right along with being white. Kindle didn’t even give us WHITE 😣
I keep tossing around the Kobo Color but really don’t want to invest in another system but I was really PO 😡 when I found out about Kindle and how they can take a book from you for any reason because stupid me thought I was buying the books & they were mine - I’m totally invested with Kindle and I really really love my kindle I’ve had one almost since Gen 1 & then throw in Kindle Unlimited & Audible wow 😀 - I have paid so much to them only to find this out - it just wrong if you buy a physical book at a book store they can’t come take it from your home - I love my Kindle and I bought the colorsoft also so here I go still throwing money into the Kindle system - I don’t know seriously bugs me!! This Kobo reminds me of my Kindle Oasis which I loved but the battery died so often anyways just frustrated and venting thanks for the info you answered all my questions!!
If it helps I don’t think it happens often… it’s a 1% situation, but it is nice that the kobo feels more like it’s a home bookshelf as you said. It is very oasis-like!!!
@@SummerSayre- it’s funny now that you said that I don’t know 🤷🏼♀️ if I’ve ever been missing a book on my kindle but then again I haven’t search for one I knew I bought & couldn’t find it.. again I was just frustrated when I heard that but I do love my kindle - and I’m very excited about the Kindle Colorsoft - Do you know when the Kobo Color came out I don’t want to decide to try one out & then I’m at the end of that Generation 😂
It’s happened to me just once and I’ve had kindles since they first launched. But who knows there may be more that I’m not aware of. Are you sure that isn’t the case with Kobo? Because I think it’s a licensing thing. If Amazon no longer has the rights to carry the book. The book is not available anymore in the US, I was still reading it and realized I could no longer find it as I tried to buy it elsewhere.
lol that’s kind of funny that even in a device we still have the trouble of books being a different size. That was mainly a problem with book series, where some would be different sizes even with the same cover art. Didn’t think that would be a thing with a device too. Not super bothered by it, just find it funny. Makes it a similar problem to a physical bookshelf.
I didn't know that a complaint of the kindle is where the power button is. I must hold my kindle in a good way as I can't even think of a time that I turned off my device unintentionally =) I wonder if that's why there is increase in storage on the signature that as long as a book is downloaded onto the device rather than in the cloud?? I don't eve know if that's how it works but it sounded good!
I didn't have any issues with the kindle power button location like people were saying until recently, and now I can't stop hitting it while reading! It's almost comical!
@@SummerSayre perhaps it's the case? I know this time around the clear case I have I struggle a bit to feel around for said button. It's really well blocked unless looking for it intentionally.
Random comment, but just wanted to let you know you can leave feedback for ARCs whenever you want. Even if the book published last year you can still go and add your feedback later. Just wanted to make sure you knew that!
Sadly Libby books are not an option for Kindle in Canada. Kobo has it and I'm really enjoying borrowing books instead of buying them. I love the colour. I am learning to annotate because it makes reading more engaging. Truly a wonderful experience
Could you explain how the web browser works? Also, do you need the original stylus or will any stylus work, e.g. the $20 ones from Amazon? Thank you :)
You can just type in any website you want in the browser and it takes you there like normal! It's a bit slow but works well, especially to get books from bookfunnel, etc. Any stylus appears to work, but the kobo one works "best" supposedly!
Hi there! I do have a question, I am completely new to ebooks. Was always one of those people that prefers the real paper version😅 but space is limited. I was looking into the kobo but I find regular ebook prices are quite expensive, so I would probably use sales to get my ebooks. Is it true that kindle/amazon has more sales/ better prices? Also, does this transfer of books bought on Amazon only work if I also own a kindle? Thanks in advance
Hi! I do think Amazon has a better selection and overall prices for e-books! However, I don’t know about transferring if you only have a kindle.. I’m sorry!!!
If it helps, kobo has library integration directly on the device, to save you some money and grab your own copies of your faves after if you want, instead of buying everything
@@tsunfish9443 oh, I didn’t know about this. However, do you think it also works if I just pull the books from the kindle device directly? Because I cannot download the books as described in the video. I guess my kindle is too new and doesn’t allow for download to usb. And with Calibre the protection can’t be erased 😵💫
So the weird page number is when you have it in adobe epub. if you go to your settings and go to Reading settings then the second page you can check that off and the number will go away. I've been just making all my epub files into the kobo epub so I get all the stats. I just use a website to change the file type.
I was torn between the Kobo Libra Colour and the Colorsoft. I chose the Kobo because of the writing ability, and you get it for less than the Colorsoft.
I sold my kindle and i'm really happy with my kobo, and there are lots of things that i prefer over the kindle. That being said, i don't think that sideloading in kobo to avoid amazon taking back books for whatever reason is an advantage, because u could (and should!) do the same just having a kindle. Buy the ebook, download it, remove DRM and sideload it to the kindle if you want (or keep it backed up in calibre in your computer until you need if amazon ever pulls it back). The remove the DRM thing is something to consider. I think it's legal in most countries, but i don't know if it's legal in _every_ country, you should do your own research. And legal concerns aside, there's the moral side of things, if i "bought" the book (because that is what the button in amazon says, it doesn't say rent until amazon loses the rights), why shouldn't i be able to use it and read it wherever i want. But as i said, it's legal to deDRM in most countries, and if not... well, you can decide what to do. But again, i don't think it's a win for the kobo, cause you can do it with your kindle too.
That's true, I haven't done that with a kindle in a long time, so I don't generally think about that being a possibility! I think I've just found it fun to sideload onto the Kobo because then all of the color shows up so it's just been a nice little hobby. True about the ethical and legal concerns as well! Good points!
@@bretebey Oh! I didn’t know about that! I haven’t seen any RUclipsr talk about it, and that’s a pretty big downside and I think it’s something RUclipsrs should point out more.. As I mentioned, I had a Paperwhite for a few years, but I sold it when I got my Libra Color, and I have absolutely no regrets
I was wondering what the speed/performances differences were between Libra colour and Kindle 11th, 12th gen paperwhites (mobi or pdf, or any natively supported formats). Also, have you tried reading cbr/cbz formats on Libra (comics/manga)?
I haven't tried those formats but I can and let you know! I would say the Libra Colour is faster than any kindle than I currently have, but the new ones are on the way to me now, so I'll compare once they are here! :)
Ooh i like but Genuine question, why do people really love the buttons? I have a kindle paperwhite and i think it looks so sleek and the fact the edges are flush with the screen. But people go crazy for the oasis for the buttons
@@xl5man Haha I know, I think people just like the feeling of the buttons! I'm not sure, but if you check the comments on my "new kindles" video, you'll see how many people wanted them back 😅 I think people just want the option of buttons, not that all of them should have buttons
I love the buttons because I don't have to move my hands or fingers while I read. I can just hold the device and press it when I need to turn pages. I like the feeling of pressing buttons better than swiping. I not buying any new kindle just because of the buttons.
I’m hoping the color soft won’t have the “hazy” effect. I don’t own the kobo color device but I did order the color soft and I am looking forward to seeing it in person
It most certainly will. That's the best anyone can do with current technology. You won't notice it after a while if you avoid looking at a normal e-ink reader.
The ones purchased from the Kobo library will automatically sync over, but I think sideloaded things will have to be re-loaded. Once they are in your calibre app on your computer it's really easy to drag and drop though, so not a huge problem. Definitely a bit different but I'd rather have the security of making sure they will all stay on there and not go "poof" like that one book did on my kindle!
@ I haven’t but I’m having trouble picking the e-reader because I read fantasy and sci-fi (Kindle ecosystem is better) but I read in two languages and I’m from Europe (Kobo is usually better for this). Boox is Android based so there’s no store restrictions on the device and you can have both kindle, kobo apps, audible, Spotify and all you need (which is great for immersion reading) and I love how elegant the white design is but was looking to see if someone who is a usual kindle or kobo person had tried it and what they thought of it.
@Carolina-rd3gh I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet, but I would say the kobo can easily take on kindle books through an app called calibre… it’s weird at first but then it’s easy! I will try the boox at some point :)
Yep! You download it off of Amazon’s website onto your computer from your account and then use a program called calibre to reformat it. Then you drag it over to your kindle from your computer like it’s a separate drive!
Kindle USB sideloaded books have disappeared on me for years. Anything done with Send to Kindle has stuck. I don’t know what caused that glitch. As for purchased books disappearing…. Never heard of that. Were they obtained through prime or Kindle Unlimited? Cause those change and you don’t get to keep those if they pull them from Prime or KU. Could that be it? The thing that will make you miss kindle…. Your annotations being saved on library book and your sideloaded books. When you return a library book on kobo, the annotations are lost forever, whereas Kindle seems to remember them somehow
Oh that's wild that they've been doing that - the one I had was purchased, not KU, not sideloaded. It was very strange! I found that people on reddit were experiencing the same/similar things with that book and others - just disappearing with no notice or refund. I guess if you look at the fine print they have the "right" to do that? I haven't looked into it fully myself with the fine print, but I will soon. I love that the highlights go to goodreads and save there as well! You'd think Kobo would figure out a way for it to save... people LOVE their highlights and annotations!
@@SummerSayre I don’t think they are purposely pulling the content. I think it doesn’t recognize what the file are after an update, vs send to kindle books which download with numerical file names the system recognizes. In short, it’s a system glitch, but not nefarious in any way. Otherwise, my send to kindle books would be pulled to, and that is not the case.
The Kobo Libra Color is a much superior device. Pen/Note taking in color which Amazon Colorsoft does not have and $50-70 cheaper. Kobo plus is awesome as well.
@@SummerSayreI love my Kobo color so much but kobo plus isn’t worth it, in my opinion. Not many book options that interest me so I stick with book borrowing from Libby ❤
I got the Kobo Libra but, despite spending many hours on the project, I cannot seem to convert kindle books to epub. If anyone can help, please let me know,e know. I have a Mac and also a PC. Thanks
The reason the books you've transferred over look different is because they are using Adobe Book reader software for epub instead of Kobo's native reader. If you want your sideloaded books to look and behave the same as the Kobo store purchased books, you have convert into what is commonly called "Kepub" format. (It's the same as epub, but with code inside that indexes reading position, and a .kepub.epub file name extension.) The easiest way to get your books on the Kobo in this Kepub format is to add the "Kobo Touch Extended" plugin to Calibre, then use calibre to send your books to the Kobo. They should be converted on the fly.

Yay! I really hope you love it, it’s such a great device.
Oh bahaha I just finished reading Quicksilver. It was really good! Had no idea the lil oshelliths were blue tho, since I was using a kindle basic 😮
Oooh now you know! I'm glad you loved it!
Mine is coming on Friday!!!!🎉🎉
Yay! I hope you love it!!!
I've just got the Kobo Libra Colour for my birthday, so I'm just trying work out what all the settings are for
Oooh, I hope you are loving it!
I read an article this morning saying that the generation of Kindles have made it so they don’t show up when plugged into a computer. I’m canceling my KU. Kobo for life!
Whaaaaatttt oh my gosh that’s a big change!!!
Yup. No more sidleloading onto the new kindles for me. Kobo for me.
I love that you love it! I especially like the library connection as well! :)
Also I got the paperwhite 12th generation and the screen is much crisper!
OMG! Which color did you get? I might need one...
@@SummerSayreI got the Jade and I love it however the color peeks out on the sides with the inserts so I also ordered a black on because I don’t know that I will like the Jade peeling out when I want to have a different theme. So I’ll probably send the Jade Back.
@mrspricecreates oh interesting! It’s weird how the matcha is the only one that is purposefully all around
The stylus works great! Even my cheap $20 stylus works! You don’t have to buy the Kobo $70 stylus pen.
Okay totally doing that!
Definitely a process to find what works for each of us! I’m so glad you love the kobo and the basic!!! 😊
Oh it's very easy to create and manage screensavers on the Kobo. With the help on Canva I've got dozens of them. It's more complicated on the Kindles.
You can manage series on the Kobo even if you haven't bought the ebooks on Kobo. You just have to deal with them on Calibre.
@Blush210 so weird considering they all used to be white! I need to try the boox! Let me know what you think!
@sherrieray the kobo libra colours just came out this spring! So very recent
@@SummerSayre oh ok perfect thank you!
It is funny - I think you can reformat them but I have so far not done that so it just is what it is 😂
I didn't know that a complaint of the kindle is where the power button is. I must hold my kindle in a good way as I can't even think of a time that I turned off my device unintentionally =)
I wonder if that's why there is increase in storage on the signature that as long as a book is downloaded onto the device rather than in the cloud?? I don't eve know if that's how it works but it sounded good!
I didn't have any issues with the kindle power button location like people were saying until recently, and now I can't stop hitting it while reading! It's almost comical!
@@SummerSayre perhaps it's the case? I know this time around the clear case I have I struggle a bit to feel around for said button. It's really well blocked unless looking for it intentionally.
@ I think it’s the way I hold it, my finger just naturally sits on the power button now *sigh*
Random comment, but just wanted to let you know you can leave feedback for ARCs whenever you want. Even if the book published last year you can still go and add your feedback later. Just wanted to make sure you knew that!
I definitely do! I just like to try and read them “on time” because some of the PR companies ask for it by a certain date 🥰
Sadly Libby books are not an option for Kindle in Canada. Kobo has it and I'm really enjoying borrowing books instead of buying them. I love the colour. I am learning to annotate because it makes reading more engaging. Truly a wonderful experience
I love annotating! I'm so glad you love yours!
If I highlight in different colors in a book, is there an easy way for me to see all green highlights vs. all yellow highlights, etc.?
To my knowledge I don’t think you can sort by highlight color right now
Could you explain how the web browser works? Also, do you need the original stylus or will any stylus work, e.g. the $20 ones from Amazon? Thank you :)
You can just type in any website you want in the browser and it takes you there like normal! It's a bit slow but works well, especially to get books from bookfunnel, etc.
Any stylus appears to work, but the kobo one works "best" supposedly!
@ Thank you! 🫶🏻
For my kobo, i used calibre with the change cover plugin to change the sizes, it bothered me how the covers were different sizes
Oh that’s cool!!! I need to learn how to do that.
Also I started making kobo clear case inserts. Let me know if you want one and I’ll send you one.
I would loveeee one! You are the best!!! I'll DM you on insta in the morning! :)
@ thank you for taking the time to respond and thank you for your input! ❤️
Of course!!! Let me know if you think of any other questions!
Ahh, thank you! I appreciate that. I’m always learning new things whenever I publish these!
Which website do you use? I've been having huge struggles with converting epubs to kepubs with calibre pluggins :(
@ryleyguimond71 what issues are you having?
I was torn between the Kobo Libra Colour and the Colorsoft. I chose the Kobo because of the writing ability, and you get it for less than the Colorsoft.
I hope you love it!!!
The new kindles do not allow sideloading or plugging into USB and seeing a drive.
@@zmasterar Yup, kobo for me. No more kindle. Amazon has got WAY too heavy-handed and powerful.
@@SummerSayre Cool. Thanks!
Ooh i like but Genuine question, why do people really love the buttons? I have a kindle paperwhite and i think it looks so sleek and the fact the edges are flush with the screen. But people go crazy for the oasis for the buttons
I think Amazon is with you on the sleek look! It seems many people prefer the satisfaction of the tactile buttons rather than swiping?
@@SummerSayre you don’t have to swipe .. just tap
@@prittamorim I love the buttons! It's so satisfying!
I’m hoping the color soft won’t have the “hazy” effect. I don’t own the kobo color device but I did order the color soft and I am looking forward to seeing it in person
Yes I am so looking forward to that! I’ll do a comparison in different lights too since this video was a bit weird as I was losing sunlight!!!
I’m pretty sure it has the same kaleido 3 screen, so it most likely will.
@@TempleofPurgation oh no! I guess we’ll see!
It most certainly will. That's the best anyone can do with current technology. You won't notice it after a while if you avoid looking at a normal e-ink reader.
@TeaWai comparison is the thief of joy! 😂
When you download them to your kobo if you ever get a new kobo will they automatically move over?
The ones purchased from the Kobo library will automatically sync over, but I think sideloaded things will have to be re-loaded. Once they are in your calibre app on your computer it's really easy to drag and drop though, so not a huge problem. Definitely a bit different but I'd rather have the security of making sure they will all stay on there and not go "poof" like that one book did on my kindle!
Have you tried Boox Palma or Boox Go 7 Colour?
I haven’t tried the boox line yet! Have you? They look lovely!
As for romantasy Kindle Unlimited have more of what I read.
Completely agree!!!
When you transfer books from the Kindle can you then read them on the Kindle AND Kobo?
Yep! You download it off of Amazon’s website onto your computer from your account and then use a program called calibre to reformat it. Then you drag it over to your kindle from your computer like it’s a separate drive!
@@SummerSayre Awesome. Thank you.
@daniboi79 of course!
Otherwise, my send to kindle books would be pulled to, and that is not the case.
no es un fallo del sistema @@thephantomjedi3729
How hard is it to transfer books from kindle to kobo?
I was intimidated at first, but it’s pretty easy once you watch some tutorials and get the hang of it!
The Kobo Libra Color is a much superior device. Pen/Note taking in color which Amazon Colorsoft does not have and $50-70 cheaper. Kobo plus is awesome as well.
I will have to try out kobo plus soon!
@@SummerSayreI love my Kobo color so much but kobo plus isn’t worth it, in my opinion. Not many book options that interest me so I stick with book borrowing from Libby ❤
@@leocutie9419 I love that Libby is so seamlessly integrated! But KU definitely has Kobo Plus beat unfortunately!
@@SummerSayre Fact! 100% agree with you on that‼️
does any of the KoBo readers have text to speach which can read a book to you?
Not to my knowledge, but you can listen to audiobooks!
I got the Kobo Libra but, despite spending many hours on the project, I cannot seem to convert kindle books to epub. If anyone can help, please let me know,e know. I have a Mac and also a PC. Thanks
I would suggest looking up a tutorial on using Calibre to convert them! I think I found one on Dylan Can Read's channel!
@ thanks, I will try that. I’ve watched a bunch with no luck so far
Thanks, I'll try that next time I convert some :)
