Excellent, and mostly accurate, informative video by a non-Tesla owner. Well done. From a long time Tesla owner, some items to consider: if there is a normal parking spot available to the right of the Tesla chargers, a non-Tesla vehicle which doesn’t have its charge port on the left rear or right front should always park in that spot and use the charger at the far right, not taking up two charging spots for their visit; you won’t find Tesla charging locations with 13 (or 11, or 9) chargers - the chargers are paired, and thus will always be installed in even numbers. 8:25 Hey Tom, I just bought my Ford Lightning a few weeks ago and I can confirm that you still get the 250kWh of free charging! Just a tid bit of info for you.
Tom has often expressed his disapproval of the free charging deals. It's a serious issue when it's unlimited free charging for months or years. But, I think a small amount like this is a great idea. First two or three fast charges for free. Just enough to familiarize yourself with the process and get to know your EV.
Everything Tesla does is for the greater good. Wait until Ford joins with Tesla to integrate FSD into all their vehicles. Only 2 years from now....maybe less from what I see happening in my Model Y every day.
Great video - thank you! The next hurdle is the location of the charging port on the vehicle vs the length of the cable and the location of the charging station. Your session shows this issue - your parked in the space next to the one where a Tesla would use that station. Your video has more information than the others I have seen - simply mentioning the Ford website and needing to order the free adapter, was worth you making this video.
I'm glad I watched to the end. Tom gives so much helpful and detailed info. Not that I even have a Ford, but I might one day. And I just find Tom's videos very edifying.
I am also a Tesla owner and it's great that Tesla give access to other brand. The only thing I am concerning about is the way different brand charging port that take 2 charging station per vehicle while charging. They should made the adapter with a long extension cable so that all vehicle are back in to charge, that way a 12 super charger can charge 12 vehicles not 6. Now on the Tesla app/screen map, the number of available charging station no longer a real number.
Thanks Tom. Reserved mine about an hour after the press release. ETA for mine with no specific date just "May 2024". It will be worth the wait. (F-150 Lightning, also known as Sparky!)
Glad to see it - anxiously awaiting GM's announcement for my Bolt EUV. Side note Tom, I can see your truck has been through a spinning brush car wash many times. Those swirls on black paint are brutal! I'd recommend getting paint correction followed by ceramic coating and then going through touchless washes and/or hand washing as needed. Really helps keep the vehicles looking brand new. My EUV still looks near perfect after 18 months.
Thanks Tom, good show and tell of the Ford adapter to Tesla SCs. It seems that Ford is one of the big legacy makers that is really working hard to keep their EV customers and make it easier to own, drive and charge them. Good job Ford, keep it up.
Thanks Tom. Im seen EVERY one of your videos. I picked up my Lighning July 2023 and just passed 42K (26k miles) on my Extended range XLT. Ordered my adaptor and currently it says arrival date of September 2024. I cant seem to find any 3rd party adaptors available here in Toronto area. Keep up the great work.
Great video, Tom. Congrats to Ford and to Tesla! Now I'll have to tell my co-worker that owns a Mustang Mach-E to watch this video and order his own adapter.
The best thing about this all is the integration of the Tesla network into Ford's network and making it all work seamlessly (Plug and Charge). It would be a good deal more of a hassle if we had to set up a Tesla account and payment arrangements etc.
Your videos are always so full of great info! Being a Tesla owner I'm just hoping many more charging stations are on the horizon, which I'm sure is the case. Glad to see this happening it will help the ev movement!
Great insightful video, Tom! A step in the right direction. What have you heard about Mercedes in regards to the NACS adaptor/usage? Keep doing what you're doing for the EV enthusiasts!!
Great video and great review of the Tesla/Ford adapter. I'm looking forward to your test of the aftermarket adapters. Your trip with Kyle should be a lot of fun and very interesting.
Any discussion amongst car manufacturers about standardization of charging port location ? Obviously this is great for Ford vehicles (I own a Lightning and am very excited) but we also have 2 Teslas and this is going to block a charging location which may be a problem when there are several non-Teslas charging and the location is busy.
Ford never has been a company to offer free assistance they leave you going back to the dealer. They still don't have a legend on the cover of a fuse panel, granted they give you a number that you have to go to the owners manual. There are to many auto manufacturers out there and the one's still in the running deliver everything that helps owning & maintaining a new vehicle and INFORMATION is number one on my list. Great coverage on a important subject and glad Ford is stepping up.
The thumbnail said "Ford's Done it".. Let's give Tesla the credit here, they designed and manufactured the adapter and charging network.. Ford signed some paperwork and updated their software.. Tesla's Done it!
It's likely Tesla's software engineers were heavily involved with the updates to Ford's software. I bet they wrote, or at least de-bugged the software on the Ford side. After all, they are the experts on how to talk to the activation process for the chargers...
Thanks for not taking 10 minutes from the start of your video to actually plug in the truck and all the 'Look at me, look at me' hype for your video. MUCH RESPECT.
Hey Tom, glad you made it back from Sweden bet that was fun and cold! I just returned from a TX to FL trip myself in my Lightning and along the I10 corridor I had to carefully plan my route based on where the level 3 fast chargers were. Some of the locations may be safe during the day but at night they’re a little spooky. I noticed that all the Tesla Superchargers were in bright lighted areas. I did order my adapter yesterday when I found out and hopefully the next FL trip I’ll do I’ll have my Tesla adapter with me. Now I can go back to Buc’ees, yayyyy😅😅😂😂 cheers
As a Tesla owner that uses Tesla Superchargers, I wish you had pointed out that because Ford EVs occupy TWO Tesla charging slots because of the location of the charging port on the front driver's side, it's important that Ford EV owners make an effort to using the RIGHT-MOST Tesla charger to maximize the number of vehicles that can charge simultaneously.
No doubt, Tom will make a video, probably multiple videos, focusing on this very issue. But still, you can expect non-Tesla EVs to be parked in every second space at Superchargers without even realizing there's an issue. It's the American way.
Yes others did videos before you but I ignored them all the minute I saw you had a video I watched it and liked it and not planning on watching any others anyway.
Tom, I’m a Nissan Ariya owner and was happy to see Nissan be one of the first legacy Japanese automakers to announce NACS adoption. They will begin with an Adaptor strategy similar to Ford, for those of us with CCS ports on our Ariyas this year (2024) and starting next year (2025) will begin shipping Ariya and other future models with NACS built in. I am excited to have access to a larger more reliable charging network. I think the standardization is a good thing and overall provides a better charging experience for all EV owners over time.
This is so damn cool for us Lightning (and Mach-E) customers. For me, it's not just about having access, it's that the superchargers are in better locations than the EVGO/EA locations. Tesla was smart about placing their chargers in places where people will actually need them. I redid some of the roadtrips we took last year using the Tesla app, and it reduced both our charge time as well as all my range anxiety. So happy!
Great that they worked this quickly to get the adaptors out there. Now if only they would figure out the battery energy management system recall issue on my Ford Fusion Energi (going on 9 months now since they told me to not charge the battery, with no resolution in place).
Looking forward to getting my adapter. Traded my Tesla M3 in for a Lightning standard range battery. I've been nervous that I made a mistake with this battery but being able to use the Tesla network makes me feel a lot better!
Awesome video Tom and love your passion for EVs. Prices are still very high , especially with current interest rate , but I love the technology. I don’t understand the need or must have charging stats like you mentioned … I don’t care the flow rate for my gas Fusion - some pumps are quicker than others - but I get that it’s unique to electric vehicles . Waiting for Ford’s updated MachE or other release as I plan my future vehicle . Great work !
Wow. I literally just bought a Lightning yesterday, and was able to order my adapter online. Great news, though Ford is telling me I won't get my adapter till August, which isn't such great news. I guess I'll have to buy one of those third party adapters you showed in the meantime.
As always, another well done and informative video. Near the end you finally hit on the point that I’ve been searching for all day and that is how do we know which Tesla superchargers are not compatible? CHARGE ASSIST. Tadaaaaa…….
the one thing that makes me excited about many automakers switching to this plug is that the cruddy ev fast charging stations will now be directly competing with tesla's wonderfully maintained system. and i like the smaller connector too.😊
Looking forward to your three-way analysis of the adapters currently available. I'm waiting for that before deciding whether to buy one of the two now available. I have three Ford EVs so I have three of their free adapters coming. But they won't be here for months and I need to charge at Tesla Superchargers now!
@@CodyDavis91It is a problem because Tesla software won't know that it's a stupid vehicle using two bays, all it knows is that one stall is in use. We see this in the UK, 8 bay supercharger location, two f'kin BMWs taking 4 bays. However the in car display says 6 stalls free. Tesla are adding predictive free/busy but while they will know if Tesla cars enroute and with that destination in the plan, they are blind to non Tesla. When there's an abundance of capacity, it won't be a problem but with existing queues, this won't work well.
Finding reliable charging was the reason I traded in my 2021 vehicle for an ICE after only 18 months. Being able to use the Tesla system will be the reason I go back to an EV.
As a Hyundai EV owner, I'm excited for this now to hopefully ease the wait times at some of the CCS stations, but when Tesla allows Hyundais to charge, I'm just excited to have more options since there are some places where CCS chargers are spread out by 50 miles so if there's an issue at the charger that you planned to charge at, it's not always pleasant geting to the next closest one. I personally don't plan to charge at a Tesla Supercharging station unless there are issues at the CCS stations that I would normally use.
Thanks Tom… awesome presentation as always…. Signed up for my free adapter already…. My order number is in the low 5000’s and it says May delivery. I watched your earlier reviews and pre ordered a Lectron adapter a month ago based on info from your interviews… still haven’t received it however and was wondering if you’ve heard of anyone that ordered the Lectron adapter and has received it yet? I’ve seen lots of the other adapter that has shipped already. Thanks in advance.
This is a good video and Ford does deserve credit for accepting the obvious and doing what’s right for their customers. I do think that Tesla is the one that deserves the majority of the credit. Tesla is way more interested in this electric vehicle usage and adoption than all the other manufacturers, proven by multiple ways. But to give them these adapters for free (unless I was missing informed ) and not license them, and they even allow them to even Put it through their own software; that deserves tremendous credit.
Great report, Tom and I am glad to see that OEMs reach out to you and your channel grows. Question: Imagine less able person who can hold either Tesla cable or adapter but not both at the same time. Can you plug the adapter into the vehicle first, then the Tesla plug?
Very good question! I'm an able man but still notice the effort it takes to wrestle an EA charge cable to the port on the Lightening I'm driving. I have to think it could be a problem for disabled or weaker drivers, and adding an adapter would make it worse.
As a X,3 and Lightning owner who road trips all three. The charging culture is different, between Tesla and non Teslas, i rarely super charge our Teslas more than 5-10 minutes (100 miles of range). Non Teslas tend to charge to 100% (often 1 hour or more). Likely a habit built from the uncertainty of non Tesla networks. Hopefully that will now change.
Hopefully I will be able to use this for my Cadillac Lyriq in the next couple of months. I am looking forward to taking it on a long road trip without worrying about functional fast chargers.
Tom, thanks for all of your videos. I’ve had my M3 since 2018 and my Lightning since 2022. You are correct that the charging infrastructure is far superior with a Tesla. I ordered my NACS to CCS adapter but it won’t be here until June. I see that you reviewed the A2Z adapter and I wanted to see if you think the A2Z adapter is as good as the Tesla/Ford adapter since I can get that in 2 weeks which means I’ll have it in time for my trip north for the Eclipse in April. Thoughts?
You hit the nail on the head. I was seriously looking at a Rivian R1S, and Mustang Mach-E, I was done with ICE vehicles, but yes, the charging infrastructure for non-Tesla vehicles is a complete joke. I literary plug in and walk away or sit and watch live TV or movies in my MYP. I'll be sure to avoid open chargers to other EVs while on road trips. 😉
Mercedes was the first German EV maker to announce their transition to NACS but I have not heard when they will have an adapter available for my ‘22 EQS. I hope it will be soon.
With different gas stations the cost of fuel is usually within a few pennies per gallon from one another. Tesla usually has a very competitive rate. It will be interesting to see if Tesla sparks a charging cost war. I can easily see several charging companies going out of business or at least consolidating.
Looks good! I have a question, though, about space used to charge with the Lightning. Your charge port is on the left front of the vehicle. Tesla charge ports are on the left rear. Most of the Tesla Superchargers I've seen have relatively short charging cables (i.e. you need to be fairly close to the Supercharger to allow the plug to reach your car). If you think about the logistics of that, a Tesla vehicle needs to back in with the Supercharger on its driver side. So, the space your video is being shot from is where a Tesla would park for charging. But the next charger (on the other side of your passenger door) would not be reachable by a Tesla, so that space is used up as well. Looking at it, it seems to me that vehicles like a single Ford Lightning have to use up 3 "Tesla vehicle charging spaces" to charge at a Supercharger station. Unless another left side charging vehicle is, say, to the right of the first vehicle (which means, however, that 2 such vehicles use up 4 Supercharger stations, from a Tesla charging perspective). Seems like front left charging vehicles will always use up + 2 Tesla Supercharger ports, as it stands today. Unless the Superchargers are able to be modified (the many thousands of them) to lengthen the charging cables so they can reach the "other side" to access vehicle charging ports (Tesla or not), there will be a more significant increase in wait times to charge at Superchargers than there will otherwise be just due to the increased vehicle traffic. Please comment on this as maybe I'm just missing something about the hookup situation. Nice video... thanks!
Tom, I reserved my Ford adapter yesterday (and received the OTA update same day) and the confirming email said it wouldn’t be shipping to me until July! (another epic fail from Ford, imho, it’s not as though they didn’t know how many they needed!) So please, as soon as you can, let us know if/how the Lectron and A2Z adapters work with your Lightning on Superchargers!
For the record, it was Aptera that was first company to petition the government to adopt the NACS. A bunch of Aptera fanboys, including myself signed a petition, for the new standard. Aptera has those Tesla connectors. Keep your eyes peeled for the show in Europe next week. One of the first PI builds should be there.
Sorry to correct you but Aptera started the switch to the Tesla connector via a pole and Lobbing. EM then changed the port name to NCAS and opened it up to others in order to get federal funding to expand the network. So Aptera needs to get credit here as they lead the way.
If Tesla can get everyone to get onboard like this with plug and charge that will be awesome. Tesla made the right move, now the Tesla Supercharger network is going to really make money. It's also overdue that we settle on a single connector and the NACS makes more sense in the US over CCS. While Ford and Farley get a lot of credit let's not forget that Tesla started implementing CCS communications because the EU required them to use CCS2. It was this meet in middle strategy that really helped to transition.
I’d like to see an Apples to Apples comparison for the charging speed and cost at a Supercharger location (using the same Supercharger) between Ford & Tesla vehicles.

Now on the Tesla app/screen map, the number of available charging station no longer a real number.
Thanks Tom. Reserved mine about an hour after the press release. ETA for mine with no specific date just "May 2024". It will be worth the wait. (F-150 Lightning, also known as Sparky!)
Ha! After having seen Kyle's video a couple hours ago and he said he was in NJ, I wondered how close you were from each other.
Same spot.
I would have been there with Kyle in the morning, but I was flying home from Sweden
And with the same Ford rep, I knew it had to have been close.
LOL, same supercharger site? That’s pretty close, albeit only in space. In time, they were half a day apart like Tom said re: his flight.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Yes! I have 0 fast chargers near me and only a couple level 2 ChargePoint so I need for my bolt asap!
Thanks Tom, good show and tell of the Ford adapter to Tesla SCs. It seems that Ford is one of the big legacy makers that is really working hard to keep their EV customers and make it easier to own, drive and charge them. Good job Ford, keep it up.
Thank you Tom for supporting and informing us EV operators.
Nice!!!! It’s gonna be so much better for charging while camping with my Four Wheel Camper at 1.7 Kw range. Great Video!
Thanks for this Tom! This is great news, finally my Lighting can go anywhere my Model Y can go. Maybe now I can make it to one of your meet ups😂
I know you are friends with Kyle, but your video is much more informative even though videos are similar length 🙂
Thanks - but you know he'll get 100X more views!😃
Kyle who?
@@NicholasShanksKyle for Out of Specs channel.
Thanks for the Focus Electric mention!!
Been waiting on you for this. After I saw Kyle OOS and Mach E Vlog and not you I was getting antsy since you are the authority on this topic.
Great video, Tom. Congrats to Ford and to Tesla! Now I'll have to tell my co-worker that owns a Mustang Mach-E to watch this video and order his own adapter.
As a new Lightning owner, I am super-stoked about this. Way to get it done, Ford and Tesla!
Thanks, Tom. I'm surprised (and happy) you were able to get 173kW. Sounds like Ford has their act together. Good for them!
Very impressed with Jim Farley and the Ford team! Go Ford! Great to see it working without a hitch on day one! Amazing job!
Aw, just leaving my 1997 Ford Ranger EV out of the club. lol. ;) Seriously, I give Ford and Jim a lot of credit for this.
Do you really have one?
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney No-no. I am only kidding. :)
Great insightful video, Tom! A step in the right direction. What have you heard about Mercedes in regards to the NACS adaptor/usage? Keep doing what you're doing for the EV enthusiasts!!
Tom, fantastic video! As an owner of a Polestar, I'm intrigued to hear about your experience with Polestar during your trip to Sweden.
Good on Ford! They earned a lot of respect by being first to enable their customers to tie into the Tesla network.
At 21:40 not all V3's will work. The vast majority of them do, but I have found several that don't. A good example is Baker, CA which has 20 V3 posts.
It appears that a Tesla could not use the space next to the Ford.
Or Tesla could install longer cables on the Superchargers.
Short answer - no
Ford never has been a company to offer free assistance they leave you going back to the dealer.
You're correct also. The title means Ford's gained access to the best charging network in America and they were able to do it first
It's likely Tesla's software engineers were heavily involved with the updates to Ford's software. I bet they wrote, or at least de-bugged the software on the Ford side. After all, they are the experts on how to talk to the activation process for the chargers...
Union County New Jersey! 💪🏾
Great video.
Thanks Tom, this is great news!
Amazing this is happening already, I didn't realize they were turning them on so quickly!
For anyone interested about wait times, I reserved mine last night (03/02) and estimated arrival is August. Free adapter, worth the wait.
Yes others did videos before you but I ignored them all the minute I saw you had a video I watched it and liked it and not planning on watching any others anyway.
thank you
Tom, I’m a Nissan Ariya owner and was happy to see Nissan be one of the first legacy Japanese automakers to announce NACS adoption.
This is pretty cool. Definitely a step in the right direction.
Rivian NACS coming SOOON! This will be a great addition to already solid CCS options
Incredible, I can’t wait for the race!
Looking forward to getting my adapter. Traded my Tesla M3 in for a Lightning standard range battery. I've been nervous that I made a mistake with this battery but being able to use the Tesla network makes me feel a lot better!
dang it. i was hoping to see if the a2z /lectron crap worked at all. that's going to be an interesting video
Very soon
Awesome video Tom and love your passion for EVs. Prices are still very high , especially with current interest rate , but I love the technology.
I don’t understand the need or must have charging stats like you mentioned … I don’t care the flow rate for my gas Fusion - some pumps are quicker than others - but I get that it’s unique to electric vehicles .
Waiting for Ford’s updated MachE or other release as I plan my future vehicle .
Great work !
Just buy a model y. Cheaper than mach e and doesn't need silly adapter.
Wow. I literally just bought a Lightning yesterday, and was able to order my adapter online. Great news, though Ford is telling me I won't get my adapter till August, which isn't such great news. I guess I'll have to buy one of those third party adapters you showed in the meantime.
Great day for Electric Vehicles!!! Especially Ford :-) Thank you!!
Kyle may have been first, but you are the BEST!!!
He only mentioned he was first a thousand times and took forever to actually do it.
As always, another well done and informative video. Near the end you finally hit on the point that I’ve been searching for all day and that is how do we know which Tesla superchargers are not compatible? CHARGE ASSIST. Tadaaaaa…….
the one thing that makes me excited about many automakers switching to this plug is that the cruddy ev fast charging stations will now be directly competing with tesla's wonderfully maintained system. and i like the smaller connector too.😊
Solid video and technical explanation.
Thank you!
Looking forward to your three-way analysis of the adapters currently available. I'm waiting for that before deciding whether to buy one of the two now available. I have three Ford EVs so I have three of their free adapters coming. But they won't be here for months and I need to charge at Tesla Superchargers now!
So pulling your Lightning in to charge occupies 2 charging spots at a normal Tesla charging location. That is kind of a problem?
It is expected by both Ford and Tesla.
Not really.
I could see this being an issue if a supercharger location doesn't have the side mounted stations like those used for Teslas pulling a trailer.
A problem easily solved by installing longer cables on the Supercharger.
Great Video!!!! Nicely Done. 👏👏👏👏👏
Great job, as always, Tom!
Excellent news and presentation Tom. Hopefully it will make it downstream to BMW (i4 driver) sometime soon.
I think the optics is a great ok for Ford
Your video / truck reminds me why #1 I hand wash and #2 why I’ll never by dark paint……Thanks for the video though, I enjoy your channel!
Ford PR is killing it! They’ve turned Ford into a leader, not a follower. The packaging, the signature, making representatives available… 👍🏼
Great video Tom! 🔋
I love how excited you are about this.
You can yell, eh?
Very cool, thanks Tom!
Great Job Tom!
