Elon is a genius. Just finished Land's End to John o' Groats and charged exclusively on Tesla Superchargers. Paid the monthly fee and paid average 35p per kW. Why would anyone pay 79p or 85p per kW?

When they do a long trip very occasionally and have no reason to pay any monthly fee. Tesla cherry picks its locations so there are plenty of places where shelling out money to Tesla would be a waste.

Less than 1% of my charging would be at public chargers, if there is an 'open to all charger' on my route then of course I'd use it but I'm not going out of my way to find one when public charging accounts for so little of my use and expenditure. I suspect that many others will think like this

Dave thanks for your informative video. I drive a Nissan Ariya and have used the Tesla Superchargers Open to All.. Both times it has been with V4s. I found driving in forwards the cable was long enough to reach the charge port on passenger side and no need to straddle bays. I started the session using contactless card. To end the session was done by pushing the button on the charger plug. No need to flash my card or do anything with the car.

Even though my Hyundai Ioniq 38kWh falls well short of a Tesla in terms of style, performance and even charging speeds, the fact that the charging port is in the same place is such a bonus and one I’ve taken full advantage of. The looks from Tesla drivers is usually priceless too 😅

I am due to go soon to Cornwall and intend to charge at Exeter, (probably at the Tesla Service Centre) both on the way there and on the way back. I have an MG4 which should get on OK with the Tesla Supercharger, but I don't have a smartphone, so therefore no app. As a result I want to roll up and simply use a credit card. From what you say, this is straightforward, so cross fingers and hope that it really is as simple as that. All I can do is try it. If it doesn't work I will have to resort to the Gridserve chargers at the Exeter Services. When I return I will post a response to this message saying how I got on. Once again, thank you for this clear explanation.

We think the fault was in the chargers, especially as when I moved to the Gridserve chargers nearby everything worked first time!

Thanks Geoff for your support. Yes, all Tesla superchargers will reset your SOC limit to 80% at busy times (at least they do with Teslas), whenever the supercharger is already at or near to struggling to cope. It can be easily over-ridden on your EV or app up to 100% if you choose, but be aware that the last 20% takes absolutely ages. I regularly film charger screens showing charging speeds of 1, 2 or 5kW at 95% SOC. Yes single digit charging speed. If the supercharger is struggling do you really need to or want to block that bay for an additional 10, 20 or 30 minutes?

Anyone with a glimmer of thoughtfulness would do that or only block up half of the stall next to where they need to charge, by parking as far across as possible. It may block two stalls, but might leave access for another thoughtful non-Tesla to use that un-used half and the adjacent stall. This might, on occasions, mean two cars using three stalls instead of the two cars using 4 stalls - but I very much doubt many would think of that possibility.☹️

Non-Tesla chargers don't change any game. They aren't available in enough places to be useful, and the marginal price difference doesn't justify any significant route diversion to use one.
If you don't subscribe to Tesla then they are about 51p per kWh outside of peak times (~39p with a subscription); other similarly fast networks on Electroverse can match 51p or compete at 60p / 63p. Plus there is the uselessness of Tesla V3 cables for many drivers to contend with.
The V4 chargers are good but thin on the ground. If this changes the game might too - but until then home charging is mandatory for EV ownership with not much more than 20% of charging at public rapids in order to be cost effective compared to a decent ICE car.

As such I have not charged at a Supercharger. Could it be Tesla do not want to list V4 in the app as drivers like me will avoid them? Leaving more spare for Tesla drivers.

Where other charger manufacturers are perfectly capable of making chargers that DO support my car, Tesla somehow is NOT capable. Go on, blame it on my car for being slightly different. It still doesn't change the fact that OTHER manufacturers CAN support my car perfectly happily while Elon can't.

Fortunately here in the UK we have providers that reach the places that cherry picking Tesla does not reach and far more choice than in the US. The only way that Tesla can provide cheaper charging is through cross subsidies from car sales. Increased competition will force an end to that.
