The Roman werewolf was called VERSIPELLIS, the skin-changer. I think that something similar was also present in Greek Myths, as we are so similar to each other... anyway, no, they didn't use Hadooken
I would have guessed that werewolves existed in ancient Greek folklore simply by remembering that the term "lycanthropy" exists. Although according to Wikipedia, the answer is kind of vague, the ancient Greeks rarely wrote about werewolves and seemed to think of them as a laughably bizarre idea, unless you count instances of people being permanently turned to wolves as a divine punishment.
@@liamfunnyman6965 The same universe as in........... a movie set? Golden Axe CLEARLY ends with it all being a video game, so..... make of that what you will!
@mxshinn "Brains". Because he's kinda a zombie. I tried to use a combination of letters that looked authentically Greek and that could still convey the message. Unfortunately, I apparently missed the mark. But thanks for all the views. :p
I believe you mean "Wise _fwom_ your _gwey"._ And the point of those upwards kicks is flying enemies, like that yellow bastard at 2:04, or anything else coming from above like the heads of the first boss. Also that suggestively placed stingers thing is doubly funny considering only _female_ wasps even have stingers - it's also what they lay their eggs through.
@GodwinCarpenter Yes, quite a few people have corrected me on that. I still stand by the fact that werewolves in Greek mythology did not throw hadoukens.
Interestingly enough, Old movies would actually film several hero and side character death scenes that never apear anywhere in the movie or even the original story. This was to mess with media leakers and reporters. They would leak the fake death scenes to tabloids and newspapers that would than cerculate the details and screenshots of it. Then when the movie comes out, the papers would either have stopped loking for or never have found the original ending. Meaning the film goes unspoiled! There IS actually a real game called "The deadly tower of monsters" that uses this to explain what every player death is. The plot is that your playing a really bad 60's themed Sci-fi B movie while the derector of said movie provides comentary and stories about the fictional in game movie's development. It's actually pretty good, they even animate some of the the in game monsters as if they were made with real flm techniques like stop motion or rotoscoping. It was free on PS Plus a while back so You may have claimed it and then forgotten about it for months like I did. P.S. Great episode!
If you want more Altered Beast, it's represented in the free-to-play mobile game Sega Heroes, which is a match-3 puzzle game with collectible heroes from various Sega games. The Altered Beast stable consist of the Werewolf, Weredragon, Werebear, and Neff's rhino form.
Unicorns weren't actually part of any single mythology. The short version is that European explorers sent descriptions of rhinos back home and they were misinterpreted.
Okay, so almost a decade later when nobody will notice I will make a comment. There appear to be at least a couple character designs inspired by beings from Greg Stafford’s fantasy world of Glorantha. The satyr guys look like the standard depiction of a kind of beastman known as a broo. The unicorn guys look like they could be based on the character of Ralzakark who is a broo who looks like a humanoid unicorn.
Wussy looking kicks...those are solid ball shots. I played this when it came out in the arcades, it was one of the coolest games back then, it was better than most other rpg/adventure type games at the time.
The 3 headed dog/wolf creatures is probably based on the Cerberus greek mythical beast. The chicken-like creature that appears near the end of your video also appears in some Golden Axe games (which game was made first?)
If you think the arcade version's ending is surreal, you should try the Famicom version. After beating the final boss and seeing the end credits, an extra scene pops up where the wolf and girl are watching the whole game in a movie theater.
The boss is Hades and the creatures he turns into are supposed to be like that of the underworld or our worst nightmares, so I guess what they look like or what projectiles they throw don't have to make sense as long as it looks creepy or gross. :)
Two-headed dogs are Orthus - Heracles killed him I believe. He is basically the little brother of Cerberus. And the up-kick is a must-have to deal with the annoying flying imps.
@CheatMasterAOD I didn't say people who played this game are old. I just said that if you're a gamer and you're old enough to remember Sega Genesis, you've probably heard of it.
Did you know the boss's rhino form made it into Wreck-it Ralph? So did QBert... :) Also, you could review this game's sequel someday! It's for Gameboy Advanced and has a TON more transformations (including a wereshark, werecobra and even a were-armadillo)... :)
Yea it is a lot weirder than I recall. When you think of the great pool of mythic monsters the creators had to pull from; Minotaurs, Hydra, Cyclops etc they went and thought up these weird things only H.P.Lovecraft could created if he was on crack.
There's a Roman myth about a king who offered human flesh to the gods and got turned into a wolf as punishment. Does that count? Anyway, love these videos. I end up playing a lot of things you review just to experience the weirdness firsthand. =)
Whahaha...that ending is pretty freaking weird, kinda like the Super Mario 2 ending where it's all just a dream. I've only beaten the Genesis version and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the same ending, since I don't remember this one at all.
I didn't mind the weirdness (I like weirdness), but the game itself pissed me off. You absolutely need the powerups if you're going to survive, but the game cheats to stop you from getting them. A white wolf will come out while you're facing a line of enemies. Right as you kill the last enemy and can finally go kill the wolf and collect the powerup, the wolf will jump and knock you down. The wolf is on a timer and only stays idle for so long, but the game makes sure to keep you as busy as possible to make sure that it's hard as hell to get to the wolves before they jump. Once that happens, you can forget about killing them. I think you're *SUPPOSED* to be able to kill them while they're moving, but I've never been able to do it.
Gotta love how the zombies shamble in perfect unison. 'CAUSE IT'S THRILLER, THRILLER NIGHT Also, I never noticed how one of the bodies in front on the rhino's stage resembles "The Scream" before!
Next to that body that resembles "The Scream" is another that resembles "The Thinker" which is another famous piece of art. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thinker
Werewolf are from the greek mythology, Lycaon a king got a visit from Zeus and gave him a meal made out of human flesh just to see if Zeus could notice. Zeus could and did. One divine curse later and the king and all his descendants were werewolves
Actually one of the earliest recorded examples of werewolfs was in Greek mythology...... and later in Roman literature. I don't mean to be a smart arse but that is the case I'm afraid. Enjoyable video though, as are all your videos.
@WeirdVideoGames i hate to seem mean but Godwin has a point, the way you phrase things in the video suggests that you don't believe werewolves existed in greek mythology
7:28 Tom, why does your brainwave look like a heartbeat? This sounds like a serious medical condition. Fortunately it seems to get resolved pretty quickly

Probably someone's said it, but that weird, pink chicken walking thing shows up on Golden Axe too, where you can ride them.
Do you think maybe Altered Beast and Golden Axe take place in the same universe?
@@liamfunnyman6965 The same universe as in........... a movie set? Golden Axe CLEARLY ends with it all being a video game, so..... make of that what you will!

As far as I can remember... there was a two-headed wolf, Orthrus, the brother of Cerberus. Everything else I have no idea for.
Unicorns weren't actually part of any single mythology. The short version is that European explorers sent descriptions of rhinos back home and they were misinterpreted.
@meowistforlife Yeah. I messed up. I fixed this in the new version of the video I uploaded to Blistered Thumbs. Thanks for the comment.
0:44 that picture of Zeus is on the cover of a PC game called age of mythology
By the way, the evil bald dude's name is Neff. Yes. It's not a very impressive-sounding name.
Seriously, that was the BEST dissection of Altered Beast (or any game for that matter) ever!! Awesome!! LOL!

At about 4:12-4:15 part you can hear both Godzilla's and Gamera's original roars! Nice touch considering the dragon transformation.
I first played this game as a young kid. For some reason it scared the hell out of me!
@h0wdi Actually, yeah. The designers apparently liked it and decided to bring it back for Golden Axe.
The 3 headed dog/wolf creatures is probably based on the Cerberus greek mythical beast. The chicken-like creature that appears near the end of your video also appears in some Golden Axe games (which game was made first?)
That "thing" is from Golden Axe i swear
If you think the arcade version's ending is surreal, you should try the Famicom version. After beating the final boss and seeing the end credits, an extra scene pops up where the wolf and girl are watching the whole game in a movie theater.
Weird... to say the least. Obviously. @ 7:42, isn't that the same creature enemies ride in Golden Axe? Great stuff as usual btw.
@WeirdVideoGames Great video and video series by the way.
love your videos!
Thank you! :)
True, the heads being repeatedly thrown are super freaky, but additionally, what's up with all the boss's excessive chewing??
The boss is Hades and the creatures he turns into are supposed to be like that of the underworld or our worst nightmares, so I guess what they look like or what projectiles they throw don't have to make sense as long as it looks creepy or gross. :)
This game looks more amazing each time I see it reviewed.
Two-headed dogs are Orthus - Heracles killed him I believe. He is basically the little brother of Cerberus.
And the up-kick is a must-have to deal with the annoying flying imps.
That's just... fabulous... *jumping pose*
@Caztro72 Wow, thanks so much. I really appreciate it. :)

one of my favorite sega genesis videogame!
Great video dude!
the dragon snail is apparantly in french mythology. its the origin behind goodra from pokemon.
@Trencher1375 That doesn't explain the Were-Tiger. I doubt that's Greek mythology.
"This sketchy bald guy is waiting patiently for you shooting lightening from his fingertips..."
and his toes
Altered Beast is one of those game that'd be awesome if they weren't shit.
I used to play this game when I was 4!

Bro... This is f**king hilarious bro!!!!!!!!!!!
The wizard Neff looks like a Prometheus engineer. With both stories linked by Greek mythology.
I know this is kinda taboo information, but the composer for the music in Altered Beast did the Pac-Man jingles.
i used to love this game lmao
I love Altered Beast and that was fucking hilarious! Consider myself subscribed!
@arn0ldaar0n Thanks, that's awesome of you to say. :D
Whahaha...that ending is pretty freaking weird, kinda like the Super Mario 2 ending where it's all just a dream. I've only beaten the Genesis version and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the same ending, since I don't remember this one at all.
a nose? typically when people refer to olfactory combat, they don't mean it that way

Love this game, arcade looks so much better.
Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf, Callisto was a nymph transformed into a bear and uh, Tigers... are... cool?
Gotta love how the zombies shamble in perfect unison. 'CAUSE IT'S THRILLER, THRILLER NIGHT

Maybe it was inspired by that game where a baseball bat swinging boy was merged with a flying monster?
@2:42 I'll bet you any thing that's an old photo of Ross Scott.
@Trencher1375 Cool. Thanks for the tip.
Werewolf are from the greek mythology, Lycaon a king got a visit from Zeus and gave him a meal made out of human flesh just to see if Zeus could notice. Zeus could and did. One divine curse later and the king and all his descendants were werewolves
@TheMariofan1000 He said body part or organ. Unless your body is comprised of flowers, you need to think of a better answer.
I don't know if it has been mentioned, but sea cucumbers eject their intestines when threatened as a weapon.
Actually one of the earliest recorded examples of werewolfs was in Greek mythology...... and later in Roman literature. I don't mean to be a smart arse but that is the case I'm afraid. Enjoyable video though, as are all your videos.
So this is where the rhino guy from Wreck-It Ralph came from...
@skyrunner14 Haha, that's messed up. I wish I knew that before. I'd have included it in the video.
One part of the body that would be more useless as a weapon than an eye: A single hair.
0:40 Almost sounds like the punk rocker's theme from Monster Party.
I don't know man. I as weird as it may be... This game is kind of awesome!
the bald guy shoots lightning from hes fingers, AND from hes toes... take a look!, there are 2 lightnings
Well if you look into Medusa's eyes you turn to stone, in that case that's a pretty good weapon.
@WeirdVideoGames Actually..... no I can't make a case for hadoukens lol. Just a lot of weird things going on with that.
@WeirdVideoGames i hate to seem mean but Godwin has a point, the way you phrase things in the video suggests that you don't believe werewolves existed in greek mythology
Disco Werewolf would be a great band name.
zombies with heads in their arms? Serious Sam anyone? (Yea yea it didn't exist back then etc.)
i played this game on shrooms once, i highly recommend it
No werewolves in Roman culture??? Romulus and Remus the twins who founded ancient Rome were: RAISED BY WOLVES!!
Raised by wolf doesn't mean lycanthropy
WIIIISE FWOM YOUR GWAAAAVE!
First Werewolf = Legend of Lycaon, greek mitolgy bro'
How bout nails or hair?
If someone kicked me in the face, I'd go concave too.
Haha, whoa.
I like this game
Wise from your gwave
And I always thought it said "Rise Cuz You're Gay!!" ha-ha
I think altered beast is the best video game of all time
YES! Altered Beast Won!
Eyes are in fact hard some parts are harder than plastic.
2:05 actually laughed!
the bad thing about the tittle of project altred beast is that i never listen
Rise from your grave in the game
Somebody has to write a song about that
Centurions were Roman, while Zeus was Greek, and so on.
I checked Wikipedia, Greek myth had werewolves.
Are we allowed to put links in RUclips comments?
classic game .
@WeirdVideoGames The creature thing looks pregnant lol XD
I bet some blood would be a worse weapon than an eyeball
i noticed scream at 7:05
POWER...
UP!
it will be an awesome B movie
shocking ending...
haha I used to play this alot on the atari ST
@arn0ldaar0n my favorite is antartic adventure and puyo puyo because I love this game
7:28 Tom, why does your brainwave look like a heartbeat? This sounds like a serious medical condition. Fortunately it seems to get resolved pretty quickly
Haha, nuts.
3:08
He turns into a pregnant (look at his stomach!) male ogre on top of a pile of corpses of course!
this game, by a year
