      Don't doubt that those brands actually use high quality products and have high quality production. Still, obviously they sell them to a much higher price than what they are worth but, they also sell an ideal/status and some people love that shit.. for whatever reason.

      CAElite - 15 yrs is a long time for a lower quality belt (assuming it was conditioned a couple of times per year). A tool belt or duty belt needs to be high quality but a belt for holding up trousers does not as trouser belts are accessories if pants fit properly you should never need a belt.

    I’d love to see you dissect some sneakers. Sneakerheads are always judging and comparing the “quality” of leather on sneakers based on look, feel and touch, but I’d like to know how accurate we really are. Just because something has a tumbled look, or is soft (buttery is a popular term) and plush or how it reacts when you push on it with your thumb, does it mean it’s actually good quality leather? I have my doubts. We often compare the leather on new retro releases to older releases or the original release. It’s a commonly held belief that the leather Nike uses on newer releases is of lower quality and I have to say I believe that. There really does seem to be a different feel and look to the leather on older releases of the same shoe, especially the OG versions. Nike has stated that because the tanneries that they used for original/older releases have closed they have to use different suppliers and that is why the leather may look/feel different. I think it’s just a cost cutting measure to make more money. Anyways I’m curious just how good the quality of leather is in today’s sneakers and how accurate we are on how we judge them (look/feel). Jordans are the most heavily critiqued and then some Nike models. About 4-5 years ago Jordan brand promoted that upcoming retro releases would be “remastered” versions after years of complaints about the quality of materials and accuracy in construction vs OG versions in years prior. We did see an improvement in quality and faithfulness to the original releases in some releases but it’s been really hit or miss. If you can get your hands on a recent release and really dissect it I know a lot of sneakerheads would be really interested in seeing that.

      What brands would you like to see?

    • @dlee6985
      @dlee6985 4 года назад +12

      @@RoseAnvil Jordans are the most scutinized so that would be of the most interest. The Jordan 1, 3, 4, 6, 12 are all retro models that have been released in recent years that are also models that sneakerheads pay alot of attention to the leather on. Certain colorways of certain models use synthetics. The black/red 4's and 6's use Durabuck, a synthetic nubuck. Many people pay attention to the leather on Jordan 1's. Different colorways can seem to have different qualities of leather on them. That would be a good model to review. The 3's and 12's use a tumbled leather. PUMA recently released a basketball shoe called the Clyde Hardwood that people have been praising the leather on. And1 released a white/red colorway of their retro Tai Chi model that appears to have a very nice quality tumbled leather and quite a thick cut I might add, but they only cost around $80. That really makes me scratch my head when Jordans go for up to $220? Is it even real leather if they can sell it for $80? They even had them on sale for $58 this past weekend. I've personally been curious if the patent leather on Jordan 11's is actually patent leather or a synthetic. This a a huge topic that really can't be tackled completely without a ton of cost and research but even if you just touch on it or do a comparison of a certain model, I think that would get some good views.

    Just bought a Rose Anvil belt. I got several good years out of the leather (yes, actual leather) Walmart belt that I bought when I was on travel and needed one fast, but it's time to trade up now that it is about to break. So I bought one from Rose Anvil to help support the channel (and to hold up my pants). I figure the price is really just the tuition for all the learning I have received from the channel. I have to say, though, that it pains me to see quality leather products, especially handmade ones, unceremoniously cut apart. Cheap stuff, not so much, it deserves it.

      @sinephase 4 года назад +3

      @@dominikmalik2283 It all depends on what you want to use it for.
      I worked with lamb skins and it's nice and supple, but won't be as durable as a cow skin. That's generally speaking, but once you get into the different breeds, and quality grades, it gets pretty complicated.
      I will say that I don't trust overly supple cow leather on a lot of things because it's probably a thin split and will tear easily.
      It's a struggle to distinguish because they've been working on it for so long (making lower quality seem like higher quality). I like this dude because he's transparent about everything, and I think that's the key :)

    Speaking of belts. The prong only went and broke on my pretty new black leather belt. No problem to mad Inventer like myself. I pulled a rusty wire nail from a wooden beam that I was using for hanging up stuff. I used emery paper to clean the rust off then I measured how much I needed where it broke off. I caught the old prong with a erwins vice grips / mole grips then used a flat blade screw driver to spread the gap enough to remover it. I just needed a measuring tape a sharpie marker two vice grips a hack saw and a metal working file. First thing I done was file off the sharp point then I quote simple held it at the right point with one vice grips and used the other one to bent it over to the correct Shape then I trimmed off the excess and fitted it to the buckle and clamped it shut again with a vice grips. I imaging it will last the life of the belt now.

    I liked this video, what would be nice tho, is telling us what the construction means for the belt - like what would be the differences in everyday use for your belt compared to the cheap belts

    • @paulaus
      @paulaus 4 года назад

      Once the cheap belt is worn it's landfill. The 100% belt will probably never wear out and can be cleaned and treated over and over again to keep the finish looking good or you can let it develop a patina that says I'm a badass that bought one slightly expensive belt that I've had for years and now it's kinda part of me.

    I had Nautica one that was like this two belts. Felt apart in a few months. Both two from Perry Ellis that say "full grain cowhide" at back and I have both still always for 7 years or so.

    I got a decently priced, but not cheap genuine leather belt from Kohls. It was two pieces of leather glued together.
    After a bit of use, the glue failed and it became two useless belts.
    I got a Ralph Lauren belt, it was about 4x the price, but it's a solid piece of shaved leather, so it's smooth on both sides, but still thick. No issues with it. You get what you pay for some times.

    I loved the Doc Martin tear down... I have the Horween Dublin 1460 Made In England version, and other than being hard to wear in that are great boots. Also I have seen some very high end bootmakers using horse hide. Is there a difference in quality with horsehide, cowhide, calfskin and lamb skin leathers?

  • @christiantaboada
    @christiantaboada Год назад

    I cut open an old costco full grain leather belt I have and it looks very similar to yours. It's one solid piece and it seems decent quality compared to the crap CKs and Floorheims I had that all ripped appart like the amazon stuff you just opened. I'm no leatherworker but if you could confirm their belts are actually full grain that would be awesome.

    On the brown belt, that recycled stuff is rags, random material content shredded, often used as cheap padding, you see a lot of carpet padding made out of that stuff. The majority of the clothing donated to various charities is sold off as rags.

    Hey, I was wondering about the inexpensive Amazon Belts, I guess if you used them on a limited basis they could work, I only wear a suit maybe 6 times a year so a cheap belt would work for that. Glad you made the video...

    Been watching alot of your content the last couple days, really enjoying it. 👍 It would be great to see lots of cheap stuff reviewed and the quality item here or there to compare. You'll have more content, get more views and up your youtube revenue to pay for the expensive teardowns. So how much are your belts? What other real leather belt sellers are there?

      Also forgot to ask. I have this favorite belt buckle that is a rachet type adjustable, it's great for shrinking and growing waistlines. But I have to get replacement belts for it every year or 2. I'm looking for the best leather to last longest.

    I would love to see you cut open a pair of Thursday Boots. They have a lot of RUclips sponsors. Some say they are a great $200 value, others argue that you are paying to fund their marketing campaign and that the boot is poorly made. I've not seen any real analysis on the construction of the boot or the leather used, only vague comments. Their "natural" color is made from Horween's Chromexcel, while other colors appear to have leather sourced from Le Farc tannery in Mexico.

    I've been wearing the same leather belt almost daily for 14 years. No idea what it is made from, bought from a small leather shop in Prague on a holiday there. I pretty sure that counts as "good quality".
    (Oh I've been using the same Paul Smith wallet for 17years, and it is **just** starting to crack on the fold.)
