I’ve never forgotten this fantastic song! Back in the seventies. That’s my age, 70, and I still think the music was so much better in the Classic Rock Era!!!!!!!
Was a kid in the 70s and my aunts uncles had me listening to these greats .
I'm 68 years of age and this song still makes my heart skip a beat! Great music NEVER dies! Ahh ... Yes, it was an honor to experience this music first hand back in the day! ☮💜☮

My age.
I was 6 in 71. This song is one of the multitudes that stayed in my mind and heart.
My mom had a big crush on this guy in the 70s, she said he looked just like her late husband. My mom passed away this past April 1st.
GOD BLESS YOU and your MOM 😇 🙏

Same here!
This song brings it every time.
I'm 72, played it multiple times
One of the best one hit wonders in rock music
Wow, I really love the hell outta this song. I miss the 70s SO MUCH.
kikikik
This great song came out my freshman year in college. My buddies and I loved it. I still do!
Can't get enough at 72 in 22?!
I’m listening to this awesome song in July 2024! I was 11 when this bad ass song came out!!! 🎸🎤🎹‼️💯✅
This song was recorded with an organ (Hammond B3), a bass guitar, and drums. That's it! No guitars, no sythesizers, no bullshit!
+buster757 Didn't Lee play the bass on the organ somehow, maybe the pedals.
Being a bass player I can hear what sounds like the strings being finger picked. I don't know that for sure, but I know where to find out. The album cover does not say.
On the bridge, a Harpsichord is used.
My source tells me that the B3 is the only keyboard instrument. Now, a Hammond can be made to sound like a harpsichord with the drawbars. I don't know for sure you may be right.. This song and Little Willy by Sweet were my fave songs.
Nope. The studio that this was recorded in had a B3, to be sure, but it also had a rather large pipe organ in Studio A, and this is what Michaels used on this song. A B3 can Never make that kind of a sound. . .
I was 10 years old when this song came out. Loved it immediately and still do. Man, I miss the 70's.
Lee Michaels should be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame based on this song alone.
The clown who owns the Rolling Stones basically picks who is inducted. Very personal and political.
John Province exactly what you said.
@@johnprovince5304 -exactly.rolling stone magazine is rubbish at best.
Everyone can relate to that song in some way ..
Darn right!!
I was just 18 and have loved the song ever since! Oh for those younger days again! May of 71!
I was 16 and loved this song.
I was a freshman in high school when this came out! I’m 66 years old now. You never hear this great song on the radio anymore-what a pity.
Damn Shame.
66 years old and still rocking. Lord, I loved this song!
Rock on 🤘🎸🎧⚡️🤍
I remember driving in the car with the family when this song came on the weekly top 40
The whole family (even dad) was singing
“do you know what I mean”
each time Lee did
Well we tried 😂🤣😅
That memory is forever etched in my mind
The Hammond sounds like a carnival !!!!!
DAMN GREAT SONG!!! Can't get enough of it!!! That's why I like the older music, you can understand the lyrics.. And they make perfect sense...
And you can sing them in the shower!
See Rick Beato's latest video review of current "Top 10" songs.... it will verify that your comment is still true 5 years later....😆
I Love This Song, those were the best days of music ❤️
i have cold chills up n down my arms, this doesnt get old, i grew up on this music when life was simple, love the raw sound too, such talent, #LeeMichaels
I'm 65 and this song brings back so many good memories
Lee Michaels, master of vocal phrasing.
This song, despite its sad lyrics, couldn't be more fun to sing along to! Oh the 60's and 70's...I'd have done anything to have been born in that time....!!
14 years and less than 4 million views/listens??? Boggles the mind! This is Classic Rock, friends!
Best line: So I asked her if she still cared. She didn't hear me she just stared.
yep, I know what he means.
nana wilson
All the 60's and 70's songs back in the day, old school, are the BEST SONGS EVER!!!!!!!
Even if he's only known for this one song he still hit a home run HELP ME
Maybe I can help.
PLEASE!
PLEASE!
I know what you mean
I was only 8 years old when I first heard this Song on my Transistor Radio. I just listened to it again today on Friday the 13th in 2023. 😂
A hit song in the 70s with no guitar that's Hall of Fame for sure. I've always liked this song since I 1st heard it.
Unarguable, undisputed undisputed. Great song. I had a period of my life like that.
Amazing flashback.
am 63 and still love this song , do you know what I mean :-) lol
@Rita; I think I do.
57 and there with 'ya, I have nothing to say
1959 baby!
57 too! The good old days!
79 and totally agree!
In a year of great songs that 71 gave us, this is one of the best!
I went and saw Lee Michaels on the strength of hearing "Do You Know What I Mean" on the radio - great soul voice, love his keyboard playing! The next day I went and bought all of his albums. As a 15 year old girl, I was quite impressed with his handsomeness. I saw him at Winterland a few times, always a great show!
Haven't heard this for sooooooo long!!!! WOW what memories, after all these years it still sounds great !!!
Ahh yes! The 70's nothing like living in that era! It was music like this that made it all worth living in the 60's & 70's among other things!
this was/is terrific but an outlier at the time, IMO. sure all eras had good toe-tapper pop like this, but too much of the '70's pop was a snooze - a push back from late 60's/early 70's perhaps. My frame of reference THEN was Top 40 radio, L.A. I got East and was introduced to Little Feat and others that were terrific. Sad that real radio is now only on "college radio" (which is admirably staffed by older community members, all gratis, as students tend to graduate).
I was dating the most beautiful girl from South Georgia when I first heard this song in 71. Great song one of the best.
Dude! What a great tune! Miss these days!
I remember the first time I heard this while staying with my grandparents in Stockton, CA on KFRC in July 1971. Usually when I hear a new song it takes awhile for it to grow on me, if it ever does, but "Do you know what I mean" was instantly my favorite song.
2 years before I was born but what a masterpiece I'm 50 total old school this gem blows today's crap away farrrrrr
This song still kick ass
As good today⁷
As it was back in the day
Love the clips from Two Lane Blacktop, a classic as well.
And James Taylor was the driver in that film.
One best song of 1971 and the 70s!!
Did anyone else roller skate to this at the local, "Roller Rink" in 1972 ?? I was 10.. And remember it vividly.. An age of innocents..
HEard this as a kid in roller rinks late 70s. Loved it then got a nice groove. THat bass!
75 years & still sounds better than today;s CRAP!
30 yrs younger and completely agree!
You don’t know good music!
Hahaha..."I Know What You Mean!!!"
Indeed. Lee's an idol of mine. Frosty too.
75 yrs?
Thank you for the post ❤ I agree,Lee Michael’s Beyond amazing ☮️
They sure as hell don't make great songs like this anymore.
ain't that the truth
I grew up in the 60's and believe me, this was not a great song. Pop crap.
+Ben Lee You must've been on acid back then.
ain't that the truth mate!
Ben Lee ...funny coming from someone who's liked videos include Sheena Easton and Betty Buckley
i never get tired of hearing this song. so cool.
A Very Good Song ! In my opinion I think the 70s, was a much better time to have lived in.
Amen, I had a good job and a new 240Z. No aids, not freeway jams, no divided country, no shooters, just a lot of happy people. I try to live in the 70's. I have all antiques, a baby boomer wife and a 1969 Caddy Convertable. I listen to mainly 70's songs and have no tv. You know what I mean.
A teacher knew Greg Allman, & got there band to play at our school, Greg brought Cher to the show
viet nam,protesters,riots,no smart phone,no internet,valium/cocaine epidemic,gas lines,remember opec...where it all started?Where did you live...not DC
Depends how old you are and where you lived. The Nam and check'n draft card numbers was a blast.
56bluegold Absolutely great! Nothin' like bein' in that 'sweet spot ' right between 'hippies ', and all that entails, and still in 'bells' and 'platforms ' with the accompanying 'perks' but, not yet in that John Travolta era. Do you know what I mean?
it's the song you forgot about and now you love it.
I love this song and this artist's voice and every time I hear this particular song I cannot stop dancing!
You're cute! Btw I love Steely Dan 😘
Keep smiling and dancing, darlin'. It's the only thing that makes any sense these days.
Needs more cowbell!
donna massa-chappee you got 'it' !!
Steven Temple it doesn't but that *is* funny... cuz I got a fever and the ONLY prescription is more ... do you know what I mean? ;-)
A great classic rock song 🌙
This song brings me back to a simpler, better time.......the people born in the 60 s and 70 s changed the world for the better
I love this song! It brings back such memories of the 70's...music was amazing back then! I'd give anything to go back and relive those days. Today, this world sucks! The music is vile and nasty!
Ummmm... Deb- you might want to look up some events from the 70s, such as returning soldiers with Agent Orange who got spit on, inflation, the recession, gas shortage, and the Ayatollah to name a few. Olympic bombing, ebola and others are equally bleak. This is just actual history; I'm not even going to address your taste in music bc music is a personal thing. I will say that I have found a ton of great music from others in the comments. A lot of very talented musicians don't get radio play except on college or underground radio stations. It's out there. Hell, even RUclips has good suggestions sometimes.
I really hate white washing the past because every era has its own serious crap that people have to deal with.
Anytime we want to glorify anything…we gotta denigrate something else. Good work, Deb.
@@lastmansleeping5433 do you remember the 70s?
@@darrellhamner4608 sure do, amd Deb’s comment sounds exactly what my father said about how the world was ending in the 70s and the 50s were much better.
@@lastmansleeping5433 well I lived through both and the 50s WERE better. Had more fun in 70s though
Great Song! Even after all these years..
I love this oldie, it's a treasure.🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡🌹🧡
🥳Ahhhh. 🎶 Some of THE BEST 🎶 music in the 70s........
wow.. love this song!
I don't know what you mean lol
cool stuff. informative! thanks for the post.
@ stephen dwyer ... Yep...those ol' Hammond organs that they were using in the sixties n' seventies made a great sound. Nothing like them since: and they are still sought after, highly prized, and coveted. You find 'em now in the strangest places sometimes....but grab 'em when you can....'cause there's nothing quite like them on the open market these days.
A little "note" of humor while we are on the subject:
As an ol' hippie friend of mine has said to me several times (he was a backstage manager for Bill Graham (original Fillmore Auditiorium music hall: San Francisco....circa 1965....one of the first large/open venues of the rock era) >>>>
"".....Yeah...Those Hammonds had a great sound....but they were a SON-OF-A-BITCH to move around!!! ....."
LOOOOOL!!! :D
~ RED ☮♥♫
.
Why? ;-)
One of rock's most powerfully melancholy songs and its bizarre organ has a lot to do with it.
These were good good days too ☆☆☆
Heard this song in 1971 while playing in Fresno. Went back to L.A and years later went to his Killer Shrimp rest. in Marina Del Rey. Loved it. Then later, about 1988, there was a classified ad in Craigslist for a DA-88 that I needed for tracking to movies, etc. Went to the house and to my surprise, Lee answered the door. He was getting out of the home recording business. Almost bought his 24 channel mixer but I really didn't need it. Nice guy.
iam 57 and love this song do you know what i mean
Sixty one and loving it!
68 - do you know what I mean? lol
A lot of memories go with this song.
So glad I grew up when I did.
“She said Lee you haven’t loved me in nearly 4 years.
You haven’t noticed that I held back my tears and now you have, but it’s really too late
better find yourself another girl
another place.”
I know what you mean
Back in L.Z. Illinois 1975
53 years later, I am still grooving to this unique track. I was 9 years old when it came out, but I loved it as a kid. Nothing quite like it is there? DYKWIM? 😉
When I listen to this, it takes me away in a different space and reminds me that music like this is very powerful. I believe you have to have a deep appreciation of the world of its little things to love a song like this. Makes me glad to like this kind of music.
1971 first year of High School...........you know what I mean
Yes
Alright !! Pam
My mom loved this song. She was my high school asst principal, so I rode with her every day. This would come on and we would both jam. Love those memories. :)
Lyn Foster Thanks for sharing Lyn, so glad we have the memories.
Yes sir!
Man when that bottom end kicks in this thing is just pumpin'. The juxtaposition of that bass line with that incredible screamin' organ, and then the drums just perfectly punctuating everything. Wow, what a ride ~ Help, indeed ~ Maybe i'm beginning to understand just what Lee meant ~
One of the best from the '70's.
Boulder, Colorado ... University of Colorado ... 1971 ☮️✌️ 😊
This will always be my favourite song to dance to.
This little gem is among the greatest one hit wonders of all time! !!!! Thanks for the memories.
'been playin this almost non-stop since I saw the artist and title on XM TV a few years back. Now my step son who's 13 and likes bieber/J Z/Miley and the rest... also digs this song the same way I did when I was his age. What would life be without all this great music?
1971. The year we moved out of NYC!
It looks like Lee Michaels is gonna have to find a new best friend, do you know what I mean?
Bravo, Lee Michaels, on writing, producing & performing on this great song, which is a dandy - & it's free!!!
She’s a dandy

GOOD MUSIC 🎵🎶 LIKE THIS WILL NEVER DIE
during the early 70s, FM radio was the go to source for new music. sunday night was countdown with casey kasem, I remember songs and the first time I ever heard them, how much they meant, where I was, or what was happening at the time. not like today, everything is just so dang internet. this tune will continue to carve its way thru many a memory for a lot of people. do you know...
Don't worry man; I still listen to the radio for a main tune source.

I agree with that, this is one of my warm up songs on my drums, lee michaels kicks ass, real music, as a drummer
I remember listening to this song on my transistor radio that was under the pillow when I was in bed. I got scared easily at night and this helped ward off any fears.
After listening to this tonight- I may do.....do you know what I mean?? After a "smoke".
