  • Hi new Eagles! We are the department of Campus Recreation, and our goal is to provide activities at UMW that you enjoy and will help you stay active! You can find us on the far side of campus in the Fitness Center and Goolrick Hall, located near the Anderson Center and Jepson Science Center.
Students love to visit our on-campus gym, which is available to you while enrolled at UMW and paying the auxiliary fee. Our gym includes a variety of strength equipment like dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and weighted machines. You will also find traditional cardio equipment like treadmills, rowers, ellipticals, and bikes, some of which are equipped with netflix and virtual bike tours of international cities. Also in our facility, you will find a cycle studio, an indoor, 6-lane swimming pool that is available for lap swim while a lifeguard is on duty, basketball courts, and men’s, women’s, and universal locker rooms equipped with showers. Do you know friends or family who may want to use the facility too? Memberships are available for purchase by members of the community, alumni, and long-term or short-term guests. Be sure to bring your EagleONE ID with you each time you visit!
Campus Rec is more than just a gym; we also offer a whole host of programs and activities to serve you and the UMW community!
Campus Rec offers Group Fitness classes like yoga, dance fitness, strength classes, and cardio classes. Our trained instructors create the workouts and playlists, and you show up for the fun! Group fitness is a great way to begin exercising, or add something different to an existing workout routine. An annual group fitness pass is required to take fitness classes outside of our Free Weeks of Fitness, which happen three times each semester. Keep an eye out for our special themed classes called ”Fitness Happy Hours” that occur each Friday at 5:30pm and feature a different instructor and class format each week.
Intramural Sports like indoor soccer and flag football are another fun way to get active with Campus Rec. You can register on our website and create your own team with friends and hallmates or become part of one that already exists. You’ll need to purchase an Intramural pass to participate, which can also be purchased online and is valid for the academic year. Some intramural sports are one day tournaments, while others may be 4-6 week-long leagues that include championships. All participants get the experience of fun, sportsmanship and friendly competition, but only the winners get an Intramural champion shirt!
If you love sports and want to compete against other colleges and universities, sport clubs may be for you. With over 20 to choose from, clubs range from fencing to quidditch and basketball to soccer. These clubs practice 2-3 times per week and compete a minimum of a couple of times per semester. They are student-run and welcome all levels from novice to advanced. Opportunities to serve in leadership roles like President, Treasurer or Social Media Manager provide excellent resume building experiences! Find the full listing on our website along with club contacts and social media pages.
If you’re lucky, you may be able to claim a spot on one of Campus Rec's outdoor trips like hikes, river adventures and more! If you are interested in setting out on your own adventure but don’t have all the supploies you need, we have an outdoor rental center with tents, camp stoves, sleeping bags, and more available to you for a small rental fee.
In addition to all of the programs previously mentioned, Campus Rec also offers personal training, a 7-week mindfulness course, a 5-week jump start program for beginner exercisers, and a 12-week training course to prepare aspiring fitness instructors to teach at Mary Washington. We invite you to join us at our special events that happen throughout the year, like Plogging with President Paino and Peace, Love, Mary Wash.
Lastly, if you are interested in an on-campus job or internship, Campus Rec is one of the largest employers on campus! You can work as an intramural official, lifeguard, outdoor trip leader, facility attendant, fitness instructor, personal trainer, marketing intern, and more! We offer many opportunities for professional growth and leadership. If you are interested in applying to join our team, visit careers.umw.edu and we will contact all qualified candidates when it comes time to fill positions.
If you want to keep up with all the great opportunities Campus Rec has to offer, our best piece of advice is to follow us on social media! You can find us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and RUclips by searching for UMW Campus Rec.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to learn about Campus Recreation. We look forward to being a part of your wellness journey at Mary Washington!
