@@tzipi365 Start with Tricky's First album, Maxinquaye. Also Mezzanine by Massive Attack. BlowBack by Tricky is a pretty cool album too. And, of course, Portishead's 3 albums.
I have seen many bands live, luckily. But I have never been as moved and spiritually shaken as when I saw this band. This little unassuming woman stepped on the stage and opened her mouth to sing and an angel manifested. I looked out into the crowd and at times the entire crowd stopped moving and breathing. We all were hanging on her every word. She was singing for us and about us...the inner part of ourselves. It was transcendent
This is from their NYC Live album, which is absolutely exceptional. It's slightly different from their studio albums which are more sample based - they used a lot of music from spy shows from the 60s!
Beth Gibbons has a voice like butterflies wings, so fragile that a touch could break it, yet it has the power of flight to take you to places you didn’t know within yourself
Back when this album came out, a local rock critic summarized this album in his year-end best music list as (something along the lines of), "the musical sound of one heart breaking".
There was a period that the music from Bristol was prolly the best in the world, some of it was untouchable - Massive Attack, Portishead, Way Out West, Roni Size
My favorite from Portishead is Wandering Star. The lyrics are, as it turns out, are a little less wandering than this song, though every bit as haunting. Full of very evocative imagery and descriptive of the experience of grief and depression. Another that I go back to and recommend is It's A Fire. "Breathe on, little sister, like a fool."
Yes!!!! I like portishead because of an ex/bestfriend a lover whose I will never forget he turned me on to this an I cant explain the sensual magical love we made just feeling the vibe and words she sang but wondering star is one of them along with glory box
This song is so evocative of how I felt as I emerged into adulthood in the mid-nineties. But the same can be said about anything by Portishead, especially from their seminal album, the downtempo trip-hop masterpiece "Dummy". Paradoxically though, even as their music captures the alienation, disorientation, and disillusionment of mid-nineties Britain, it remains somehow timeless. The sludgy beats and samples, stripped back and strung out instrumentals, were ahead of their time and may never sound dated, and the lyrics, written and delivered by Beth Gibbons with such powerful sensitivity, never failed to strike at the heart of a human emotion universal to us all, nomatter when or where we were born. Portishead, perhaps the whole genre of trip-hop, and the alternative scene emerging from the lesser-appreciated provinces of Britain at this time, is a rabbithole well worth falling into.
I saw them live in Munich when I was 16 on exchange. The whole place just had blue light everywhere, and Beth just stood at the front with her hair down over her face. One of the most beautiful gigs I’ve ever been lucky enough to see. Thanks heaps for posting this one!
Portishead were always an amazing act. They came out of Bristol in the '90s along with Massive Attack (borne out of the dying dance era of the '80s). Both are amazing, and while some might think there was some kind of competition between them true music fans generally appreciate both for their diverse sound and creativity.
Fun fact: Portishead is a town in South West England, after the release of the album "Dummy" the local council had to issue a plea to the public to please return stolen road signs with Portishead written on them. LOL
Do you know the name of a trip hop group from late 90's that had a album cover that was black with a pink photo of a hallway on it, pink writing on the back ? They had a song called "Butterfly" and I think one called "Bristol Calling" (maybe...iirc).
Temp Sitch Could it be Tricky - Nearly God? Check that one out. That is the closest I can think of. Tricky was also in Massive Attack and they had a song called Butterfly Caught. Hope that helps.
@@shaymcbride7913 Thank you for trying to help but it's not Tricky. His stuff I know. When I get my hands on the CD again, I'm going to come back to these videos and tell everyone ! They had some good songs. I remember getting this album at the same time as Boom Boom Satellites, late 90's to early 2000's. Edit: They had male and female vocals.
Massively influential for a group that only put out three studio albums. There's very little on this album, Dummy, that isn't great - so please do more. My humble recommendation for India: "It Could Be Sweet".
Clicked like SO fast. One of my all time favourite bands, glory box, sour times you should check too. Guarantee you will love them. Beth Gibbons has a solo stint as well which released some craic like Tom the model with is a grand tune.
This song is so moving, even if you couldn't make out the lyrics, like I still dont really know what it's about but, it makes you want to actually weep for the world, like your Buddha or something.
I love tank girl it is soo outside the box reminds me of other weirdo movies that shouldn't have got made but,the producer was probably coked up. Movies like buckaroo banzai or blue iguana
The genre of this music is called "trip hop" -- one my new favorite genres. The band Portishead is named after the coastal town in England. Trip Hop is a fusion of hip-hop, trance, electronica, techno, and new age sounds. Beth Gibbons' voice is one-of-a-kind. You should really do a few more of their songs. (1) Sour Times (2) All Mine (3) Roads
India, the first time I heard this song was in a TV show called PERSON OF INTEREST, Season 04, Episode 02. That episode definitely portrays the emotions you described. You should give the show a try. It's no Game of Thrones, but once I started the show, I got hooked. It was a pretty good story, decent Phillip K. Dick-ian level of paranoia for the future with technology.
The song "The Rip" by Portishead never fails to make me emotional. It's just one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. Not many reactions for it on youtube. Slow-burner song that just kills me everytime. Q_Q
I’m sorry but I don’t see anyone saying this. Your breakdown and feeling about this song was so spot on and so relatable. Shit gets me close to tears every time
First album era Portishead is amazing. Blending elements of hip-hop cinematic soundtracks turntablism. There’s enough alternative versions of songs to form a bonus album of material.
A couple of times a year I listen to this song and just release all the lonely emotions. It is so powerful. Please listen to the song that youtube almost continued to after the song: Röyksopp - What else is there. Almost made me jump of the chair screaming: "Don't stop it"".
Hey India, I really liked this, so thanks for introducing it to me. I haven't been around for a while. You look good. I like your hair! Hope all is well with you and yours. Beautiful song!

Your insight is impeccable! Wow! I felt a deep connection to this song for like a decade or more. The way you broke it DOWN?! I feel like finally someone gets what she is trying to say into my thick skull. I watched your reaction a dozen times, now I get it. My mom says that about me. I chose my own path (black sheep of the fam) Thank you to the moon and back for making me understand why I love this song SO MUCH. Happy New Year!
Their entire album 'Dummy' is an absolute gem.
Definately one of the best albums of the 90's. One of the pinnacles of trip hop.
All three of their albums are pretty flawless. I hardly ever listen to them, but when I do, the quality is always apparent.
I just bought the vinyl a couple months ago... takes me back to when it first came out. Nothing else like it.
"Trip hop" I will have to look that up.

Portishead is a wonderful group. I would highly recommend their song "Glory Box" if you would like to hear more of what they offer.

I agree. Glory Box is another excellent song by them. Beth has the voice of a siren. Cannot believe it’s been 26 years since Dummy came out.
And then Tricky - Hell is round the corner
Sour Times, Numb, Glory Box, Machine Gun, Silence ( unbelievable track)

26 years ago tomorrow Dummy by Portishead was released. One of the greatest albums of all time. You pronounced it right. It’s a town in Bristol UK.
Bristol created this Genre. Must be the weather 😁

Beth Gibbons is the lead singer I personally love her solo stuff and she does opera as well. Such an enchanting and haunting voice all in one.
