Portishead is a fucking gem. Not many people talk about them anymore but they are legendary to me.
P is definitely a legendary group. This live concert was amazing.
Way underrated
My late brother Bill, got me into this band. He had such cool taste in music.
@@d-2793 my introduction to Portishead was through a friend, whilst on some mushrooms he put the music video for Only You. Needless to say I was instantly a fan and I've greatly enjoyed exploring their discography. My only regret is that I didn't find them sooner than 2013
Yeah, they are one of those bands. If you know you know.
Portishead - Dummy - one of the best standalone albums of the '90's.
Amazing album, for me tho their best song is on the self titled, “only you” is one of the dopest songs and beats ever imo
@@puppetmaster8551 1000% agreed.
@@jimsparrow1699 the beat with the singing is so addicting, one of my favorite beats ever and obviously Beth’s vocals are awesome. Great albums as a whole too.
@@puppetmaster8551 Plus the lyrics themselves would be beautiful and haunting with no music at all.
@@jimsparrow1699 ya no doubt, everything about the song is great
I'm being biased here, but the whole album, Dummy, is a mood. A work of art, a masterpiece. Trip Hop at it's finest. I find singer Beth Gibbons' voice intoxicating, it takes me places. Dummy is one of my all time favourite albums.
They're a Bristol based band, in the South West of England. Portishead is a coastal town.
I'm glad you liked it, or it seems like you did. Thanks for posting this 💜
100% agree
Agreed - it's a perfect record. And not to be a vinyl snob, but if you can find the Czech pressing of Dummy, you'll hear it like hearing it for the first time. Astounding album in any case.
@@MrSuperHappyPants I agree. The slightly hissy, rumbly vinyl sound suits it perfectly and adds just the right seasoning
I definitely have to be in the mood for it, but I have listened to this album from front to back hundreds of times since its release.
It is a Masterpiece! From different perspectives Portishead, Massive Attack and A Guy Called Gerald introduced me into Trip-Hop... and i'm glad they did!
Portishead along with Massive Attack are the undisputed kings and queens of the Trip Hop genre, highly recommend checking out the following tracks. For Portishead, "Glory Box" live from Roseland NYC, "Humming" and "Western Eyes" as for Massive Attack "Dissolved Girl", "Black Milk" and "Group Four". Both albums, Portishead's Dummy and Massive Attack's Mezzanine are considered by many to be in the top 100 albums of all time, so while they haven't known huge commercial success, those in the know and those inside the music industry these 2 groups are legend.
You left out Morcheeba, but you are right on with Massive Attack and Portishead, awesome bands.
Meh, the kings of trip hop are Red Snapper.
The commercial success thing is bit of a myth, in my opinion. While it's fair to say that in comparison to the sales of some of the garbage produced today their sales were insignificant, their music has been used in hundreds of movies, TV shows and commercials over the last 2+ decades, and they have the kind of longevity 99% of the bands out there today could only ever dream of. Massive Attack are still touring and selling out every gig, that's been built solely on their back catalogue and the staying power of their music. There aren't many bands today who could possibly be selling out massive venues in 20 years, let alone now.
Portishead - the rip ....is slept on
Trip hop is the most underappreciated genres out there. There's like 10 groups in the world, ever. But nothing else has that bad ass deep chill grooves with feels. Need more!
Portishead - Sour Times is a unique listen as well. Her voice is like silk.
Sour Times and Glory Box - their 2 best songs by a mile.
Bought the album when I heard “Sour times”…samples the Danube affair though which in itself is a masterpiece of music
That whole album is awesome. Still listen to it after all these years. Sour Times was one of their biggest hits in the US.
Trip hop is so so so good.
Massive Attack is a group you should get into for sure, and always MORE Beth and Portishead
Totally agree.... Its my childhood music
Don't forget Moloko, Goldfrapp and Faithless when you mention the big trip hop names.
Definitely
and Tricky
@@jffullum4325 So much this!
This is from a very special time in British music history. All the memories come flooding back every time I her this song. The whole show is incredible.
exactly... what an era for talent!!!
@@erlstone the 90's in the UK and US were incredibly for genuine musical talent. It's sadly not the case anymore.
You guys should react to…
Portishead - Glory Box
🎸🤘
definitely do Glory Box!
Give Denya Okhra's looped version of Glory Box if you haven't heard it before
Yep
Wondering Stars as well
This is what you would call a "Torch Song". A singer in the spotlight, crying her heart out into a microphone.
Portishead's first album "Dummy" is the best make-out album. Front to back, one of the best pieces of work ever.
Agree!! I listen to that a ton by myself. Wait, what?
Have you ever tried making out to Third? That shit gets weird fast
@@mysticsaxophone4181 the laughing face emoji was invented for this comment 😂
@@yostabbastabba1864 lol. Sometimes that's the best person to make out with
Portishead Roseland NYC is one of the greatest live albums of all time. The studio versions of the songs are amazing but this live set is a whole different level.
It is indeed
Live in Roseland NYC, cada cancion supero a la original, con creces. disco eterno y perfecto
I remember back in the early 2000’s I had a friend who was a huge music nut like myself, but he would mainly either buy his CD’s used or get them from the library. About this album, he said: “It’s so good that I actually bought it new.”
Genre is Trip-Hop and it is epitomized by artists like Portishead, Tricky, UNKLE, Wax Tailor, Bonobo, Sneaker Pimps, Massive Attack, etc.
The bass Bead pointed out is a big part of the genre, a genre that sits beside and intermingles with similar genres hip-hop, chill, downtempo, even jungle fits in there a bit.
“Overcome” by Tricky; “Life In Mono” by Mono; “6 Underground” By Sneaker Pimps; “Your Girl” by Blue States; “Days To Come” by Bonobo; “You Wish” by Nightmares On Wax; “Glory Box,” “Sour Times,” or “All Mine” by Portishead; “Waiting In The Line” by Zero 7; “Que Sera” by Wax Tailor; “Teardrop” by Massive Attack; “Trigger Hippie” by Morcheeba.
This person trip hops.
they should do UNKLE psyence fiction
What a great list of songs!
Those who know know. And you definitely know. Great list. See you in that bassy headspace someday, my friend.
I would add Red Snapper too.Such a great band, that shaped the sound of trip hop closer to jazz
I love her voice, her style of singing. She doesn't try to dazzle you, she seduces you...😎
Portishead is a MOOD. I used to chill out on my sofa and listen to this album on repeat.
Man...the tears that have fallen from my eyes to this album. It got me through break-ups, deaths, murders, depression, just so much heartbreak. An instant classic, shout out Bristol Trip-Hop.
We need more great female vocalists on this channel: check out anything by Bjork, PJ Harvey, or Fiona Apple.
ABSO-BLOODY-LUTLY.
Belleruche, Franchesca Bellmonte also Lamb.
This!
PJ Harvey is just awesome and mesmerising in equal measure. But such a range of styles. Could go for Shame, Sheela-na-gig, To Bring You My Love, Down by the Water......
Oh yes.
Tori Amos
Pj Harvey
Fiona Apple
A lot of good female artists in 90s
Love how open-minded you guys are, and how you always look for the positives in your reviews.
Really good choice, nice performance. Keep the variety coming.
They listen to such a wide range of music!
I once sat opposite to Beth Gibbins on the train from London to Brighton. I wanted to speak to her but was stunned into silence. She is a legend and a goddess. Try something from her solo LP with Rustin Man? The opening track, 'Mysteries' is mesmeric.
Beth Gibbons has the voice of an angel. I love this song.
Damn, any body else remember music before auto-tune? What a voice. Also this was a live performance of trip-hop. While the recorded version does have live instrumentation it was also very sample heavy and had turntables as well. The album that this came from is killer from start to finish and is definitely a vibe.
I agree with most of it. But you can’t dismiss the beautiful music that is also came from voice alterations (auto tune, distortion, heavy reverb). If you are a skeptic listen to the album “22, a million” by Bon Iver
99.9% of live performances use no autotune so yes i remember!
LEGENDARY.!!! Beth's voice is soo touching and vulnerable - one of the greatest voices ever.
their albums and this live performance is still rotating whenever it gets 'sensual'.:)
I saw Portishead at Coachella. Prince headlined amongst other great groups but I was there for this legendary group. No one I was with understood but damn, it was amazing! So many good songs. Trip hop needs to make a comeback.
Brad hit it right on the head. "Sounds like something that came from a lounge". Portishead was front and center for the trip hop movement which was the chill, smoke, lounge after hours type crowd genre. Hence the heavy bass Brad mentioned also. The whole album was phenomenal and would also blow your speakers out.
Portishead is legendary. A progenitor of the Bristol scene/sound.
Best band of the 90’s as far as I’m concerned. Their first two albums are flawless.
They called it Trip Hop. She’s a modern day torch singer. I love “Only You.”, “glory Box” “Humming” there’s so many.
This musical genre is called 'Trip-hop', which is a type of 'downtempo' melodic noir, featuring hip-hop beats. You should definitely check out more trip-hop songs from bands like Portishead, Massive Attack, Zero-7, Tricky and Lamb.
Definitely gotta listen more from this band. One of the best of all time.
Saw Portishead live at Bridlington Spa about 1998.
Small,intimate gig. Truly fantastic.
Remember Beth at the end of the concert kneeling at the front of the stage chatting to everyone and signing albums etc.
Very memorable evening and although I've been to dozens of concerts in my lifetime, Portishead was one I'll forever remember fondly.
This album is amazing, it's called Dummy and it has so much variation. I advise you to listen to every track on it, Numb, Sour times and Glory box are the other singles from it but there are other gems.
This album is called 'Live from the Roseland Ballroom NYC' the original version is on Dummy.
🙄
Ah...nice...I remember Triphop being huge...you guys should do Tricky or Massive Attack...great music!!
4:32 has been messing with my heart since the mid 90’s... it just won’t quit. Sublime ❤
It's so cool to watch the reactions of a younger crowd to this trylly iconic band. Portishead songs are the soundtrack of so many important moments in my life. And so many years later that's still the case.
Such a great band. I was fortunate enough to see them in 2008. The gig was mainly full of 40 year old music nerds, and there wasn't a dry eye in the theatre when they played Roads.
Lost count of the times I seen them in the late 90's always a great night, Beths voice is so powerful.
Thanks for this reaction . I love Portishead music and Beth Gibbons voice is so moving. You should also try Massive Attack "Teardrop", with another sublime female voice by Elizabeth Fraser. Or BROADCAST - Come On Let’s Go, with the delicate voice of Trish Keenan.
Listen to the power of the audience cheer as those first notes are played. Beth's voice is simply incredible. So full of hope, passion, sadness and sorrow all at once. No voice would have worked with this band. So good.
Me and my metalhead friends love Portishead. Amazing artists and Beth is one of The Greatest.
Wow... you guys are going deep. Beth Gibbons is awesome! Her voice is the epitome of dreamy pain. Man, what a great band. They've got tons of great songs.
Dreamy pain... What a great description.
Unbelievable version of one of the best songs ever written. Absolute gem of a band. This performance fully transports me everytime.
Portishead "Dummy" , In my top 10 albums. Brilliant
It's in my top 1 🙂✌️
Yesssss!!!! Portishead! Prepare to be blown away!!
Love Portishead! This whole album is gold especially - Glory Box, Wandering Star and Sour Times.
When i was a kid and dared to venture past the regular songs i heard on the radio and actually listen to the entire cd.. this song grabbed my attention .. the lyrics.. the emotion that seemed more mature then what i was ready for... i embraced it then and i still embrace it to this day... the lyrics... the emotion ...the singing.. this is a story.. and it will continue to be retold to new people who cant help but find other peoples reactions to it and see their not alone in the impact of hearing this for the first time
Portishead and Beth Gibbons especially were and are simply one of a kind… 🔥
Nice to see ya both wander into the trip hop space. This song is from a wicked live show Portishead did at The Roseland.
As others have suggested, if you enjoyed this song, check out more tracks from Portishead: Numb, Wandering Star and Glory Box being some of their well known hits.
Massive Attack is another Trip Hop band to check out with early hits like Blue Lines, Protection, Unfinished Symphony to their masterpiece Mezzanine album, Angel and Tear Drop being big tracks and videos or newer work like Voodoo In My Blood.
Can't forget Tricky out of the trip hop mix with amazing tracks like Aftermath, Black Steel, Makes Me Wanna Die, Hell Is Around The Corner, Hollow, Excess and Evolution Revolution Love.
Thanks for sharing Brad & Lex!
Yes to absolutely everything you said.
@@DocRobert Portishead's cover of SOS oringally from Abba is another fantastic track.
Could not imagine my 90's without all these amazing bands that never received the radio play/top 40 of others.
Interestingly Tricky sampled Portishead for Hell Is Around The Corner
Finally. A great female vocalists. I have been pushing for this for 6 months.
One of the untouchables.
head voice, guys. She's not a trained singer, but the emotion, vocals, the lyrics and the creativity behind the track are phenomenal
From one of the best albums of all time - "Dummy". Trippy heaven. Just love Beth Gibbon's voice on this...
So glad your doing portishead such a great group
I LOVE that you reacted to this! Thank you!!!
Why do I instantly tear up whenever I hear this song? Gets me every time.
It's about time someone reacted to Portishead. I love there music and loved trip hop music
Portishead has some amazing songs. Her voice is so sorrowful
Trip hop legends
In our youth, Portishead was the go to on "recovery" days after a couple of nights of raving. Such an intense, unique vibe!
They are what was called, "Trip Hop" back in the 90s. Very cool music to listen to when its raining.
you put on your headphones you listen to portishead and you close your eyes, it transports you to another dimension, is real good the sounds and voice😍😎🇲🇽🤟
Glory box was the way to go
She’s a 20th century trip hop torch singer. This is from the “Live From Roseland” CD.
Portishead are from Bristol UK, and took their name from a nearby town.
If you want to react to another Bristol band it has to be -
Massive Attack and 'Unfinished Sympathy' but watch the fantastic video filmed in an LA neighborhood
Mezzanine is an amazing Album!!!
@@pauljansen1137 A gem. One of the 90s best, if not THE best.
@@the_black_arts one of the best for sure...i would say Radiohead's "OK Computer" is the best..but that's just my opinion!
Glory box is my favorite, but this one is one of the best songs ever..
This entire set is amazing. Outstanding. The strings just add a depth and space to Portishead’s soundscape.
You should definitely do more of this band. Haunting vocals and a spooky vibe come together to create arguably the best that Trip Hop has to offer.
This group was very different. Trippy alt rock. Neo-jazzy soul. Something. Forgot about them. Like 20, 30 years ago. Cool music.
Oh man. One of my favorite bands of the 90’s
Portishead is niche as hell, good to see others enjoying them.
Love them, no real substitute for their style.
You both dropped into the Portishead trance ! Perfect, this album was one of my top five albums from the 90's, gorgeous and raw ... born out of the Bristol (west England) scene late 80's nad part of the 'Trip-Hop' scene so called
I've seen Portishead live so many times. They're always amazing.
Other trip hop acts to check out is obviously Massive Attack but also Moloko, Goldfrapp, and Faithless to name all the big 5 of the genre in the same post.
Tricky.....he is trip hop personified.😉
I'm sorry but Faithless is not trip hop. Its dance music.
@@z0h33y No. According to the band themselves they've always seen themselves straddling trip hop and house music.
@@SaturnusDK Moloko i agree. But Faithless? I dont know how you can listen to Insomnia and say thats trip hop. Im not a purist by any means.
Faithless pioneered the progressive trance sound, sadly it became much too popular and rubbish. But Rollo and Sister Bliss were amongst the first to do the whole hands on the air peaks (ironically partly based on getting around the Criminal Justice Act's ban on repetitive music exclusively for dancing - progressive trance mixed it up so as not to be repetitive).
I'm impressed that you did a Portishead song. A unique band.
I think it's great that people are discovering the other side of the 1990's
Breakers in Brooklyn in the 90s would break to this and her other drum & bass songs. It was beautiful & iconic….and lost forever.
This is a band that makes you want to stare out your bedroom window on a rainy day.
Oh man, every time those strings come in, chills. I just love this song and Glory Box so much!!!! What an incredible first album from any band! When this came out it blew everyone who heard it out of the water. The arrangement, her head voice, the band, all in one. It's a mood. It feels sad, yet pensive and slightly drug induced.....
Trip hop is a whole new, wonderful rabbit-hole to go down :)
Their debut album has just an amazing vibe front to back. Can recommend their song Glory Box, you might recognise the chorus which is great to sing along to.
This whole concert is legendary. Fuck they sounded good.
Portishead swept across New Zealand many falling in love with them❤very fond memories of times gone by 🤘
Portishead has a special place in my heart. I lost my V-card to this song and Glory Box.
Good times lol
Several people have already suggested Sour Times - let me also add Wandering Star, Numb, Humming, and this entire concert performance (important to note that the video incudes tracks not on the album release, and it adds so much watching the music happen). Love to both of you. Keep it up.
Congratulations on reacting to Portishead. Achingly beautiful. I love the variety you bring. Just be careful. They're a gateway drug to trip-hop
Their whole unplugged session is VIBES.
Oo Portishead - God, they were/are brilliant. The 90s was BRILLIANT 💖
Thank you for reacting to Portishead!!! This is my favorite song by them. I was geeked when I saw the thumbnail for the vid pop up on my home page. Fastest click I made all week. Big ups to Portishead. For Brad & Lex - thank you for how much content you create and your honest and inciteful analysis. Y'all are awesome. I'm a long-time fan.
Other great female vocalists to get into about this same time period: Veruca Salt "Seether", Juliana Hatfield "My Sister", Tori Amos "God", and Liz Phair's "Supernova" are all great tracks.
Anything by PJ Harvey too.
All good choices. Tori Amos' Spark is fantastic too. 4 Non Blondes and Fiona Apple as well.
One of Tori's Letterman performances like "Spark", or MTV Unplugged "Blood Roses".
WOW!!! You guys are really finding some gems from my youth. Their Live album is amazing.
Thanks for doing this. Never would have guessed you reacted to Portishead - Roads. It's one of the most achingly beautiful things I've ever heard.
I like Portishead and am glad you are doing the live version because I enjoy the live better of theirs. Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man did an album that I love even more.
I've been waiting so long for this!!
I ADORE Portishead. One of my favorite bands from high school. I would love to see you react to more of their music. They're poetry for when you're raw or grieving.
Yep amazing album still, 20 years nearly since release, still fresh, different, ground breaking frankly, and jeez she can hypnosise with that voice. Glory Box is the one for me, one of my favourite songs of all time.
From one of my favorite albums. Thanks for reacting to this.
Her voice breaks my heart whenever I hear it, over 25 years later after first hearing it and it's still one of my favourite songs of all time.
Amongst a decade of stand outs this stood out, god bless the 90s, being a teen In the 90s was best or 2nd best to a teen in the 70s. Wish I’d seen zeppelin so bad
Legendary Band, almost 30 years and still listening to their songs on YT, I lost my CD which I bought in the UK in 1994. Looking at the new generation reactions are Priceless... till date no band ever played or bring up their kind of music.
PORTISHEAD The GOAT!
RIP Beth Gibbons...😢
I still get goosebumps when i hear the first notes played in the intro‼️ Ivd still got the 'Dummy' album on CD, i adore Portishead it's fair to say‼️❤😁🇬🇧
I am gonna agree with most here...the whole album (Dummy) is fire...keep on with them!
I think like as a 12 year old, 13, and 14 I would blast this so loud whenenever I could "blast" it and only like the whole entire album I had but I wouldn't want people to like be thinking that this level of expressive depression is a thing that should outhear your happiness. It don't matter what all you do with your dreams though, be you, be sad, express, remember , forget, more
65 year old man here and I have to say I love how adventures you two are. I heard about this band a bunch of years ago, don't listen to them much but they intrigue me. Cool you did this, really cool!
Portishead is ... just BEYOND!!
If you want to hear something even more unique from Portishead, try their track Mysterons from the same album. Absolutely stunning bit of music.
its a fire is the best track on the album for me. stunning
