  • This is a video of a 1961 Comet salesman film comparing it to the 1961 Comet VS AMC Rambler. This is the original slide show with the original 33-1/3 RPM record sound. Comet dealers would show the slides and play the record for their salesmen to train them about the car and point out how it is better than the competition. Please go to www.61thriftpower.com/DVDsales... for a DVD with (4) 1961 salesmen slide films, two TV commercials and 2 radio interviews conducted by Jac LeGoff with Mr Ben D Mills, Vice President of the Ford Motor Company and General Manager of The Lincoln, Mercury, Comet Division.

    Of couse they didn't mention that the Rambler has 127 horsepower standard, the Comet has 85. Also the Rambler has a 3-speed automatic, the Comet has a 2-speed. The Rambler also offered their famous fully reclining seats. They are both nice cars and this is a facinating look at history, thanks for posting.

      And the fact they thought the comets rear End was better proportioned. Don’t get me wrong... I’m a Ford guy... but I also own a 58 Rambler Custom. And I gotta say the taillights on the 61 comets always threw me off... rear end of the rambler classic certainly looks better

    Ya gotta remember, the Rambler had a bigger and more powerful engine than the Comet, and the Comet taillights were cribbed directly from the 1960 Edsel, which the Comet was intended to replace. Early Comet styling studies carried the Edsel name script and even a vertical center grille divider.
    Rambler offered overdrive, and the available automatic transmission was a three-speed Borg-Warner unit instead of a two-speed.
    And who says greater overall length is a virtue to a smaller car buyer?

    As has been pointed out, the Comet was originally meant to be the 61 Edsel.

    This was when the Rambler American was a smaller car designed to compete with the imports, while the Rambler Classic was the compact-sized car and the Rambler Ambassador was an intermediate-sized car. Midway through the 1960s - to the best of my knowledge - AMC increased the American to compact-sized, the Classic to intermediate-sized and the Ambassador to full-sized.

    It's a little sad to see what passed for advertising back in the 1960s. I mean styling is so subjective. "Gun sight rings on the fenders!" Oh yeah, gotta have those, it helps when you're out driving for roadkill.

    I would think that the shorter Rambler would be easier to parallel park, especially in cities where parking is at a premium. Cadillac even offered shortened models of their cars as city versions.

    My Aunt Virginia had one of these. As a Iittle kid in the early 60s I thought it was the coolest little car! It was fast and the rear deck styling and taillights were almost futuristic looking! 👍😄

    Rambler was designed and built as a solid, dependable, economical car. Resale value was high because they lasted a long time. Falcon and comet were designed to be disposable. Planned obsolescence. They were meant to last 4 years.

      AMC is notorious for overbuilding their cars. A big reason why they were always short on cash... their cars actually lasted

    @bigcrowfly The original Comet even used left over tail light lenses from the 1960 Edsel

    • @falcon664
      @falcon664 3 года назад

      Not correct. The style was similar since the Comet was to be an Edsel, but they were longer and shaped differently.

  • @bigcrowfly
    @bigcrowfly 14 лет назад

    The first Comets were originally planned to be compact Edsels, that is why they have the angled tail lights and gunsite ornaments. When they cancelled the Edsel, they had to do a last minute change to calling it a Comet. Just substituted name since they both have 5 letters, and did not badge as Mercury till later.

      The same is true of the 1960 VALIANT. it was a stand-alone make with no divisional badging for the first two years, only a stylized letter “V”.
      It wasn’t officially a PLYMOUTH model until year THREE. (The DUSTER and the SCAMP were both Valiants TOO…as the letter “V” in their VIN numbers proves)

    it's hard to imagine nowadays that you could once buy a new car for $2,000..... everything now is at least 10 times what it used to cost then. what you pay for even a cheap car now you used to be able to buy a decent house for that price.of course back then the average worker only made about $2 an hour

    • @tiki_trash
      @tiki_trash Год назад

      In 1961 $2000 was equal to $19,810.77 in 2022. So yes, due to inflation things do cost 10x more. In the late 50s there was a recession in America and that was what was driving people to buy "compact" cars.

    I had a 1961 classic. Great car, bigger inside and bigger trunk than the comet The engine was perfect and I got 27mpg on the highway. 6cyl and overdrive. Comets leaf springs could break after only a few years, which didn't matter because by that time, the trunk floor and rocker panels would be rusted out

    the comet was known to have an inadequate brake master cylinder, while achieving the single most ridiculous styling cues from fomoco since the edsel. what a p.o.s. one of my aunts got one for her birthday, and it cost so much to keep fixing it, that my grampa charley dumped it for a chrysler.

    The first two Rambler Classics are that ugly to be called the Alcatraz Rats. Comet is on the other hand, a handsome offshoot of the standard sized Mercs for '61.

    • @winstonelston5743

      It was an Edsel. The taillights were the same lenses as the '60 Edsel Ranger. The early Comet styling studies had the horse-collar grille center and Edsel name scripts. Even the letter _C_ emblem was derived from the _E_ Edsel emblem.
      Adding more weight and length to the basic Falcon structure did no favors to the already inadequate 80 horsepower 144 cube six, especially with the two-speed Ford-O-Matic.
      Even the '59 Studebaker Lark VI (pronounced _six_ ) had 90 horsepower.
      Rambler had 127 horsepower and offered a 3-speed automatic, and the stick shift version could be had with optional overdrive.
