    Just so everyone knows, this was a test flight, not an instruction flight. It was just a quick way for me to go up, see it fly, and get the feel for how it handles! I have to get 10 hours of instruction in this before I can fly it (for safety and because my insurance requires it). Stay tuned for the actual instruction flights! :)

    Of course, every pilot finds their own comfortable technique, but I found at first, with the turbos on the Seneca, I like to hold brakes and bring the engines up to the maximum takeoff manifold pressure (just short of when the over boost limit lights come on). Then once power stabilizes, release brakes. That way you aren't hunting, trying to equalize power while rolling down the runway. Once you get comfortable with the plane, you will know by feel and you can do rolling takeoffs.

      Your procedure also ensures you confirm full symetrical power from both engines, before the takeoff roll. Pretty nasty to find out you don't have full power and possibly exit the runway.

      Yeah. It's sad what happened to Jenny (aka TNFlygirl) and her dad, due to her incompetence. It's also a shame that most of her videos were taken down, as they were great examples of what not to do.
      This may just be a coincidence, but, shortly after Jenny's crash, Kay did an almost identical flight with her dad (minus the crash, of course). Now she's got a more powerful plane than her Cherokee, and, unless I'm mistaken, it has what looks like a Century 2000 autopilot in it (same one Jenny's Debonair had).

    Don’t regularly comment on videos, but the seneca II and III are my absolute favorite airplanes, plenty of power and they fly really well. Now be careful with the turbos, really easy to cause damage to your engines if you get into bad habits.
    After a long xcountry running 65-75% power, allow your engine to cooldown before descending. Just reduce 2” MAP every couple of minutes til you hit your desired descent power at TOD. Also avoid running the props below 2400rpm for an extensive amount of time. Our typical cruise is 33 MAP and 2400 and about 11.5 gals/h on FF, the POH is incredibly precise with its power setting table.
    Don’t forget the 2 min turbo cooldown after landing (very important) and careful with over speeding the gears on take off.
    My last piece of advice is, avoid flaps on take off, unnecessary drag, can be dangerous during an engine failure past your decision speed. Instead, just do static departure. Foot on the brakes, 33MP, release and get it as close to 40MP as you can and do not overboost.

      I do similar with my turbo diesel vehicles, so a gentle warm up & then a running warmdown after every journey, especially when pulling off the motorway into a service station. Many people dont realise they should do this for a hot engine 😮

  • @brianbrotherson5529
    @brianbrotherson5529 2 месяца назад +4

    Kay, to answer your dad's question about the wastegates.......not in a Seneca III. On modern turbo charged airplanes (and I think the Seneca V) the wastegates are automatic, they have a pressure controller and that uses oil pressure to operate the wastegate to maintain a desired Manifold Pressure. The Seneca III has fixed wastegates. With nothing automatic, and no way to bleed off (bypass) excess exhaust pressure, at low altitudes, and the throttles open, it WILL overboost. As you figured out, you never takeoff with the throttles full forward, unless maybe at a high elevation airport on a hot day. Another type of system is manual wastegates, they have another control, almost like a 2nd throttle. You can leave the wastegates open, produce no boost, firewall the throttle for T/O. (or be ham fisted with it during training) and the engine is just like it's normally aspirated, but as you climb and start losing power, you manually start closing the wastegate and increasing your manifold pressure, Then that secondary control becomes your "throttle" at higher altitudes.

They're safe, got an extra engine to get you back to an airport and they're stable, makes a good IFR platform. 6 Place airplane were the big door in the back and plenty of storage in the nose. I had one for many years and it was a good airplane. Yes it's double the amount of fuel you're used to using but but it's triple the safety!!! What is much XC flying as you do you should really consider trading up!!!

    Smart question dad on the wastegates on the turbos. Similar to my race car and any car with turbos, the wastegates have springs with different pressures. Say you have a 10psi wastegate spring. Technically speaking the max the turbo will produce is around 10 psi (never exact). Thats why you also incorporate boost controllers to either raise or decrease boost. Theres alot of terminology with this subject but just some general information. Overboosting can be very hard on the engine if the engine doesnt have enough fuel for the extra air. (i.e Detonation). Very important to keep an eye on exhaust gas temperatures. Cheers on the new plane!!

    Kay is in command, ahead of the plane and as sharp as always, so we are safe. I found the glass displays very over detailed with small font, reckon they can be flicked thru to a simpler display. Heres a thought, during familiarisation period, why not have a sticky post it note on the dashboard coaming with Vref speeds, power percentages, flap settings for t/off and landing - just for quick reference?

    Only question I have is since you said you bought it, when do we get to see another video with you flying it? It's great to see you moving up! Big jump from a Cherokee 180, but a Seneca has Cherokee DNA, so a good next step. I've flown a Cherokee 6 for decades and would love to make the jump to a Seneca, but don't really have the mission to justify it. The Seneca is a Saratoga (retractable gear Cherokee 6) with two engines. It is a comfortable cabin in either configuration, lots of shoulder room.

    I really like the way Piper Seneca’s fly. Lots of power, nice and smooth, relatively easy on fuel for a small twin, one of the easiest twins to fly. Very nice airplane.

    I did half of my multi-engine and Commercial training in the Seneca II.... and because my company the airplane, I got a solo endorsement and flew it solo to my FAA check ride in Miami (KTMB)!!!
    The FAA designated flight Examiner was looking at me strange then asked how did I get there & where was my flight Instructor? WASNT NEEDED! I aced the ride and he cut it short & said ITS OK 👍🏼 you passed!

    Cherokee 180 to a Seneca III is a huge step. Wouldn't it be safer to learn how to manage a constant speed prop and turbo on a single, prior to making this move? Light twin. Make this one an "all business" aircraft to fly. If there is some fun associated with your flights in it, then that is a bonus. More than good luck to you.

      Ah, Kentucky Flying Service. I got my license there in 1981. Dick Malloy gave me my checkride.

    • @FlyMIfYouGotM
      @FlyMIfYouGotM 2 месяца назад

      @@MartyBecker Nice! I remember Mr. Malloy. I got chewed out by him one time and I returned the favor! At the time I was taking lessons, you came in to the desk, ask for a plane and they gave you the keys. They gave me the keys and so I start my pre-flight check. I am almost finished and Dick starts yelling and chewing me out for taking that plane. I came right back at him telling him that I didn't just "take" that plane, his people gave me the keys! Now he cools off and I get the rest of the story. This plane had been overhauled and had not been given a check ride yet. NICE!!! So, I go back inside and get another plane. I get half way through the pre-flight check on this plane and here comes Dick!!!!! Rinse and repeat. He starts on me again and now we are in a yelling match. It seems this plane should have been grounded for a bad alternator! I got to pre-flight three planes that day but only fly one.😂😂 I finally quit flying when one of the KFS planes got strained through the trees off the end of the runway. The solo student had an engine failure on takeoff with only a few hundred feet altitude. The guy walked away without a scratch but both wings were completely removed from the aircraft. The part that made me quit was that I had turned that plane in for a bad engine a week or two before that accident. It stumbled and tried to quit on me 3 times during landing. I wound up landing at full power with full flaps. As soon as I crossed the threshold, I cut power. Once on the ground, the engine ran fine. That was just one of several incidents and increasing cost that finally scared me off.🤣 Glad you got your PPL. Are you still actively flying?

    Congrats, be careful, do not be afraid to ask for more dual time than the 10 hrs min. Multi engine flying is learning to fly a twin on one engine safely. Remember your weight and balance and v speed calculations before every flight. Remember your memory items and written check lists. All the best.
