It's quite a ride isn't it. "That bass" is Geoff Castellucci, a phenomenal singer with a range of more or less 5 octaves. It's worth checking out his own solo performances as well as anything he does as a member of VoicePlay.

Since his low note (B0) he did on the "Halo" theme, he is just a full-step from being in the 5 octave club. Before, Tim Foust had a range just slightly larger, now Tim and Geoff have identical ranges

Welcome to the theater kids of a cappella! You've found a wonderful rabbithole to chase down; VoicePlay is a remarkably talented group, and they always go the extra mile in terms of staging and makeup etc. I'm still scratching my head as to why they don't get the acclaim and attention that Pentatonix and Home Free attract, because they are easily as skilled as their pop and country companions. And you're right about the bass- Geoff is definitely top tier (but stick around; the other guys are vocal monsters as well, it just take a little longer to notice when he's in the picture). He's got about a 5 octave range, and he utilizes all of it. He's also got a solo channel, where he arranges music for himself (including providing his own harmonies!) and those are worth taking a look at as well. I hope you'll have a fun time on this journey!

Don't forget Layne's beatboxing, I always love the incidental sounds he adds in. Not only sounding like a real drum kit, he makes sounds that you begin to wonder how a human voice can make that sound. The drips of water in the Little Mermaid Medley and the whoosh here and also the tremelo whoosh in My Mother Told Me.
With Voiceplay, there is always so much going on in the background along with the lead vocals, you have to listen to it several times to catch it all. It took me a couple of times to notice Geoff doing a 6 note descending bass riff in the background as Layne steps back after his line in Oogie Boogie. I heard it, but wasn't until I took my eyes off the lead the second time, that I noticed Geoff standing back there doing it.
Eli can belt out like a rock singer and Cesar has a powerful belt when he wants it, although he has a softer voice.

This group is very theatrical in addition to their musical talents. If you enjoy Disney, they perform a lot of medleys from those movies. I highly suggest their video "The Little Mermaid Medley" featuring Rachel Potter. Thanks for your wonderful reaction. ... Guy

I like Pentatonix and Home Free, but I have a BA in musical theater so these guys are like coming home for me. Geoff deservedly gets a lot of attention because of his range and those crazy low notes, but seriously, every one of these guys has some magic going on. Stick around and you’ll see.

Loved your reaction - welcome to VoicePlay, the group that never loses focus on either Voice or Play. The bass is Geoff Castellucci. He also has his own private channel which is superb. (He's dropping a cover of Monster Mash today, it should be hilarious and gorgeous, all at once!) For a great leap from Hoist the Colors, check out one of their Disney medleys, perhaps Moana or Little Mermaid. They're extraordinary and show the sunny side of the guys.
The tenor is Eli (pronounced El EE), the guy with the contact/blind eye is Cesar (newest member of the group) with Jose between them. Next to Geoff in the front row is their extraordinary beatbox, Layne. Have fun!

Geoff the Bass singer, long hair front arranged this song. Layne, also seated dark hair and beard and cutlass, also arranges songs. Voice Play released Halo, the theme of the video game after Hoist the Colours. Halo was arranged by Layne. Layne and Geoff do most of the arranging. Great reaction. Jose Rosario is a guest performer
The regular members are Eli Jacobson top right, Jose Rosario center top, Cesar de la Rosa, then the two seated Layne Stein and Geoff Castellucci. Cesar has several Spanish language songs that have been released, Cesar is pronounced in the Spanish fashion. Welcome to the Voice Play world.

Geoff, the base, also does his own covers, although he does use some background instrumentals. His range, as of Oct 10th, is B0 to E5... yes, basically an entire singing group in one. Of VOiceplay's songs, since we are nearing Halloween, look for Oggie Booggies Song, from the movie Nightmare Before Christmas. Of Geoff's own music, start with the Headless Horseman, which he released last October. It will let you see how he does his songs before you move into the newer ones. Voiceplay has been preforming for nearly 20 years, and you can tell. They are some of the ELITE in modern accapella.

Loved your reactions!! Voiceplay is amazing, they love to include a theatrical element to their covers. Try Warriors and Little Mermaid for more theater, Can't Help Falling in Love and Go the Distance for straight music. There are no bad choices.
Top left was Cesar de la Rosa (new member), Jose Rosario Jr, Eli Jacobson (pronounced Ell-ee), then bottom left is Layne Stein, the beat boxer, and Geoff Castellucci, the incredible bass. Most of their music is arranged by either Layne or Geoff, this one was Geoff.
    Tenha um dia maravilhoso!

Glad you discovered them. Geoff Castellucci
Is one of my favorites vocalists. Tim Faust from "Home Free" and Avi Kaplan formerly from "Pentatonix" and Geoff are my favorite male vocalist. Each brings a unique tone and nuances.
There are bass with deeper true basso profundo voices but due to anatomy have a hard cap on how high they can go. It's expected that in order to compete with modern fans attentions they must have a considerable extended range.

His cover of Monster Mash or The Headless Horseman is perfect for the spooky season! Literally all of his work is amazing!

Welcome, ladies, to the world of modern acapella. You've stepped into a world of rabid fandom, I'm afraid. However, as far as rabid fandoms go, we're pretty tame, for the most part. We love our particular group of choice ( Pentatonix for me ), but we also love the other two major, more well known, and forward fronted groups, too. Each of the three major groups ( Pentatonix, Home Free, and VoicePlay ) is known for a certain thing, though each of them will, and CAN, do anything. Home Free is known more for their country sound, VoicePlay, as you've seen mentioned in the comments, is known for their theatrical performances that go along with the vocals, and Pentatonix is known for their "wall of sound" harmonies as well as their seamless transitions when doing medleys. Since you have found, and reacted to, the other two groups, I would love to see what your reaction is to Pentatonix next, if at all possible.
Lovely reaction, ladies, a lot of fun to watch. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Geoff [the base singer] has a range from E♭1 - G♯5 ... very amazing. The group makes a production of whatever they sing, I don't know what sorts of music you like but I personally would suggest their medley from The Little Mermaid or something like the Oogie Boogie song [from A Nightmare Before Christmas], but there are a lot more.
Also, Geoff Castellucci, the base singer, does solo creations in which he records multiple layers and dresses up as several people and then combines it all - one I really liked was Misty Mountains from The Hobbit, but there are many more and I have never been disappointed by any of them.
And now, since it has been 2 months since you did this video, I'm going to go and see if you have done any others of VoicePlay :)

The song is from a Pirates Of The Caribbean, and tells the story of the Pirate King binding the magical female Calypso.
It was sung to call all of the pirate brethren together for a meeting. Hoist the colors means to raise the flag.
